    Bought the 2018 Ridgeline back in September 2017 and it fit my needs just fine here in southern Wisconsin. Smooth handling, sophisticated AWD system, power, comfort, fuel economy and capabilities made the Ridgeline the ONLY logical choice for me. It's a heavy duty Pilot without the 3rd row seats with a nice size composite bed and a big lockable trunk. Thank you Honda for the unibody Ridgeline otherwise I wouldn't even buy a pickup.

    I own an '18 RTL-E. After an F150 and 4 Tundras (all of them wayyyyy more truck than I needed) I couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. The quiet ride is better than our '14 Lexus GS350 and it tows our 4500lb. travel trailer with relative ease here in the flatlands of Ohio. It's all the truck Most of us need....which is the reason Honda builds it but Honda didn't take the male testosterone factor into account when they designed it. At 66 I'm way past that criteria. I just need something easy to get in and out of, is comfortable, efficient and able to tow 5000lbs.

    I own the same truck as the one in the video - down to the trim level and to the exterior and interior colors - very happy with it. As for the suspensions breaking up, Edmunds took a Ridgeline, a Tacoma and a Frontier over the same washboard road Emme mentioned and demonstrated that the damage on the Ridgeline shocks was lower compared to Taco's and with Frontier's. Also, the Ridgeline is not a Pilot with a bed , it actually drives better, it's more agile and more enjoyable than a Pilot.

Like the Jeep Gladiator being a Wrangler with a 5' bed, the Ridgeline is somewhat like a Pilot with a bed but with light off road capabilities. Regarding the rear door limited openings, you can add 5 inches to the opening by replacing the rear door checkers with the OEM front door checkers. I did it to my 17 RTL-T and it works great, doors open an additional 5 inches.

    Allow me to add a comment about Ridgeline’s in general. I own a 2006 base model that I purchased in 2009 with 33,000 miles on it. I paid about $13,500 for it (I don’t think the dealer knew what he had!). It is the only vehicle I’ve owned that was worth more after six years than what I paid for it! The Ridgeline has been fantastic and I have 155,000 miles. I still have the original brakes (don’t freak out, I’ve done panic stops and they work just fine) and the original struts. The only major expenses have been the 100,000 mile service, a new radiator and four sets of tires. I meticulously change oil (Mobile 1) and all fluids on recommended intervals.
    For the first four years I owned it, I regularly towed a 4300 lb travel trailer, I did have anti-sway hitch and it towed like a dream. The only downside was mileage, it dropped to about 11 mpg. I’ve hauled wood, dirt, tons of camping equipment and even my motorcycle, all with no problems. While I have not run the RL in Baja, I do live in Montana and have driven my share of nasty off road conditions and in tons of snow, only got stuck once in all this time.
    I can’t say enough about the comfort, convenience and reliability of the RL. The in-bed trunk is one of the coolest features ever. While Honda could "macho" it up a little, there is enough aftermarket accessories to take care of that urge. Unfortunately, Honda has probably priced the G2 RL out of this loyalists price range. I guess I’ll just keep my '06 past 250,000 and beyond!

      With that tiny bed and low ground clearance, you wont be able to load big heavy material without maxing the leaf springs and maybe even damaging the chassy
      This truck is for 90% of families who "need" a crew cab truck for walmart visits

  • @jfazzuoli3813

    The biggest obstacle for this truck is the looks. If it were only a little butch I think the consumer would choose this over a Tacoma or a the GM twins. It also need a "leveling" kit from the factory allowing for larger offroad tires and better ground clearance. Perhaps offer an "offroad" trim with these attributes.

      Levelling kits are available and dirt cheap. You can put a 265/60R18 tire on it (with stock height) and the majority won't rub. Some have slight rubbing at full lock depending on the tire. Either way, it really makes this truck look much better than the stock firestones they put on it. But yea, Honda definitely missed out on some easy sales by not offering an off-road variant.

      I own one, if you accesorize it well it looks great. The "black"edition looks kinda washed out IMHO. I got black with tons of Chrome accents, the more attractive optional wheel, and roof rails. Looks neato. Here's the thing about the Ridgeline and the other mid sizes, and why I think Honda zagged left while Toyota, Chevy and Nissan (TCN) zigged right:
      If you look at the TCN midsizes, the more you spend you get more off-road options. Thats great, I like the Tacoma, I helped my brother pick his out last year. Honda is different, the more you spend, the more you get drive-ability options, like speed matching cruise control, a lane-keep assist that is close to autonomous steering, speakers in your bed, an acoustic windscreen that keeps it insanely quiet at 70 MPH. I am absolutely terrified of taking my new truck over boulders in the middle of nowhere, and it does just fine with 8" of clearance and AWD on virtually any conceivable road or trail. I'd rather pay for the cool cruise control I use every day than a rock-crawling system on the ceiling. Thats me though, my brother wanted the rock-thing; and I think his truck is pretty cool too. It just depends where you want your money to go.

    • @treydrier3169
      @treydrier3169 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can buy leveling kits. Here's the thing to understand: Honda is not trying to compete with Toyota or GM. It's really in a segment of it's own because of the creature comforts you won't find in the others. If you use the truck primarily to haul things around town and not rock climbing, the Ridgeline is the best choice. If you're into rocks, then buy one of the other less comfortable choices.

    This is the kind of truck 90% of truck buyers actually need. Unfortunately for Honda, too many people are hung up on it being "not manly enough". That's OK though- Ridgeline owners will still be driving these things when their odometer passes 250k miles while Ford/Chevy/Ram/etc owners are on their 2nd or even 3rd trucks in the same span because their previous "real trucks" fell apart after 100k miles.

    • @agaad22
      @agaad22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ock Su the Big 3 make long lasting trucks. My ‘02 Silverado is at 240k miles. The big problem with the Ridgeline is cost and no discounts. If I can get a truck that has double the tow rating and it’s more roomy than the Ridgeline for the same price due to the big discounts, it only makes sense why they’re not selling.

    • @bretts2356
      @bretts2356 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sure, the big 3 have made some good vehicles- they have also made duds. I've owned good Chevys and Fords but my only Dodge experience was a piece of junk that was falling apart before 110k miles. I haven't had any bad experiences with Hondas yet, though. Anyway, like I said- 90% of truck buyers do not need anything beyond what the Ridgeline offers. Living in rural GA, I can't sling a dead cat without hitting a $40K + truck from the big 3 that has never, nor will ever see anything more extreme than a dirt road and picking up some things from Home depot.... People just like driving big trucks for the sake of driving big trucks. I do agree with you about the price though- that is the biggest hurdle when it comes down to getting people to choose the Ridgeline over its direct competition. I mean, sure, the Ridgeline is probably a better vehicle than the Frontier... but is it $10k+ better? I dunno. Tough call.

Also, my dad’s work truck (a 2005 f150) is almost at 300k hard, construction, delivery, and towing miles, so your comment is completely irrelevant. Been using the 2018 RTL-E since October last year. Logged 15K miles. That included some long haul trips from Florida to North Carolina and Oklahoma. Hauled 800Lb Pallets on the bed still having the feel of driving an SUV. Hauled 600Lb skid mounted mechanical equipment 6ft tall well tethered and strapped on the Florida Turnpike cruising at 75mph and the truck does anything within the performance parameters of a mid size truck. Weighed all my options on the decision making process. Test drove an F-150, Tacoma, Colorado and a Tundra. Comfort, gas mileage and moving mid size loads was the criteria. I don't have the need to tow trailers. But did receive positive points from a company who use 3 Ridgeline's for their landscaping company. Driver assisted Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist systems do a great job. I myself logged 260K miles on a 2001 stick shift Nissan Frontier. To me the Ridgeline has performed above and beyond my expectations. Oh! The pricy figure by the way is closing the gap benefitting on gas mileage. I agree that it isn't a heavy work and muzzle truck. But for mid size loads the Ridgeline indeed is a great asset.

    I bought a 2008 with 95,000 miles on it 140,000 on it now drives absolutely perfect not one single rattle. Tons of dump runs Does not squat down like most small trucks with the load. Way tougher than you think. Goes through snow like no other. I used to laugh at these rigs now I'm a fanboy. Lol

    The biggest obstacle is the looks. There is nothing about the look of the Gen 2 that says this truck is unique. I have stayed with the Gen 1 because I think it looks a bit more rugged and doesn't look like all the other trucks. I have seen a few Gen 2 owners add the 2" lift kit and it does look much better. That being said I really wish Honda would design an offroad package for the RL but Honda isn't about to go down that road. I just don't see Honda taking any risks with something new and different like Gen 1 was when it was released.

    • @AS-er4ud
      @AS-er4ud 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you. But I almost like that it doesn't have the tough look right out of the gate because then it makes yours that much more unique on the road and you can add the tougher look yourself. Like you said, you can put a small lift and that already makes it look better. If you do that, add chunkier tires, running boards, roof rails, wrap the chrome pieces and get it in black then it starts to look the part and is comparable to any other tough looking mid-size truck IMO.

    Good simple pickups. Normally we go Nissan or Toyota when buying trucks. My father got a 2010 Honda ridgeline this year. He is getting older so his real heavy duty working days are over. He can haul his trash, pull a trailer, pick some stuff up from home depot etc. If your not needinga heavy duty truck then this will be a decent vehicle for you. This would accomplish most peoples needs. But hey when you live in the city you need those F250s or Ram 3500s that are lifted and 4wd... even if you never take them off road because you scared of a scratch.

    I wonder how many haters have actually driven a new Ridgeline? Most likely 'NONE" For the life of me...I don't understand how people on TH-cam speak negatively of a vehicle they have never seen up close or driven. I own a 2017 RTL T and love it, I get far more compliments on my Ridgeline than anything negative about it. So all you haters that don't like the front end or keep saying it's not a truck....I respectfully say....have a great day!

    I agree with Ock Su. I am not a contractor nor do I tow a heavy trailer, so my 07 RL fits all my pickup truck needs. The back doors open wider than the newer models and the bed trunk is innovative. The one big deficit is that, for a 5000 pound towing capacity, Honda should have supplied an engine with more torque.

    "Why not get something a little more comfortable?" Because it looks like two different teams designed two different halfs. Up front, is it a Pilot? Is it an Odyssey? Those aren't two vehicles you want to be confused with when driving your truck. Out back, yes that storage is cool, but the tailgate seems a little gimmicky. But atleast it looks like a truck, done the Honda way. If they could engineer a extended cab (to have options).. fire the front designers and re-do that.. I bet it'd sell better.

    We are turning in our Toyota Sienna soon and are looking for a new lease. The Ridgeline looks enticing although it is expensive. More So than the Subaru Ascent which is better equipped, with AWD, and lower price.
    We are uncertain which way to go on this.

  • @TugHillGuy
    @TugHillGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the Ridgeline might be the only pickup on the market without a frame. The prior version didn't look as much like a pickup truck. I would call it a 'SUT' for Sport Utility Truck. Most people don't need to haul or pull large loads and don't need rock-crawling capability either, so I tend to agree with the reviewer. I've driven a couple of my past vehicles down jeep trails in my region and I wonder how well it would stand up to that sort of use. There's a woman down the road from me who owns one, which I think is about a 2010 model. It is white and has substantial rust on the doors on both sides as well as the tail gate. That surprised me.

    A mention to the blow out on the rear shocks on the wash board. Two other channels have done the same test against a Tacoma TRD offroad and a Nissan Titan XD Pro-4x as the gear truck. Guess whose shocks lasted the longest? Ridgeline. The Taco blew first, both of them. In fact the same thing happened to my 2017 TRD off road hauling a Honda 420 rancher ATV. Sold that weak excuse of a truck fast. The six speed paired with their 3.5 is useless. Garbage compared to the previous gen. Then the Titan XD blew its rear shocks next. The Ridgeline had slight leakage, but did not have a complete failure. So keep that 2 cents in mind when comparing.

    It simply cost too much and I never see Honda pushing incentives off sticker price. Like she said, "people still see it as a Pilot with a bed". I believe, if they made it look more like a 'conventional' pick-up, it would probably sell better. People don't want to buy a 'truck' that doesn't 'look' like a 'truck'. It has many redeeming qualities, but it doesn't quite 'look' like a truck. And, that is important to many people. Just look at how many people own trucks.

Manipulated by dealers and manufacturers, a vehicle is transportation, not some social trophy of success. Borrowed up to your ears on a depreciating purchase is quite silly. $41k easily gets you a well equipped F150 with the 2.7 ecoboost and 4wd.
    An F150 is massive and more than a lot of people need, but there's just so much more value there than in a $41k Ridgeline.

    • @skirmich
      @skirmich 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @skirmich
      @skirmich 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      People have different needs and set different values to different features.. Ride quality should not be a compromise in 2018, Yet modern pick ups still drive horribly compared to the rest of the industry.. So the Ridgeline Ride Quality is much appreciated in its segment.

    • @FM4AMGV
      @FM4AMGV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they ride firmer because when you put a trailer on the back you don't want it to go full scrape mode.

    • @skirmich
      @skirmich 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Ride quality is inherently based on the solid axle, high sprung rear axle, high center of gravity and overall chassis flex.. Trucks are not capable of good ride quality because of their very nature.
      The Ridgeline brake the mold by going full unibody, full independent suspension with coilovers and low center of gravity. This is what makes the Ridgeline "Truck" ride so damn good hovering into Car handling... Yet it has its clear drawbacks.. Low cargo volume, pronounced rear axle droop when towing, low ground clearance.
      So the Ridgeline as capable as it is, is not a jack of all trades.
      For 100% Work Duty I would never buy one!.. But the sad reality is a lot of Pick Up buyers just buy them as Accessories with very low work duty so the Ridgeline is a match made in heaven for those people.
