    Actually it is very easy to removed stickers from the cover. Take the album out, grab a hair dryer and warm up the sticker. It'll peel off very easily. Have done countless tymes over the years.

    If you don't want your album covers to smell of and potentially get damaged by lighter fluid, you can use a hairdryer instead. Just use it to heat up the sticker a bit and the glue will become soft and you can pull the sticker right off. If there is any residue, then wipe it with a little oil (normal oil for cooking) on a tissue. Oh, remember to remove the record from the cover before you use the hairdryer :-)

    A warm iron works by loosening up the labels and stickers put on the cover. Make sure it's not too hot and you take the record out first! The lighter fluid is pretty toxic.

    I get my labels wet all the time with no ill effects, with one exception: I left the record on a wet surface once for over ten minutes and there were a few dark wet spots on the label. But it dried and you'd never know. I don't scrub the label, though. Heck, I rinse my records under the kitchen sink faucet. The whole thing gets soaked.

    • @andykelly7321

      I did that for the first time today, I washed 1 of my records in the sink like it was a dirty plate. Worked like a charm and my label so far seems fine and dry.

    I have used every vinyl cleaning method on the planet and D4+ is the best way to go. Simply apply generously to the record and use velvet brush while the record is spinning on the turntable. I use 78RPM. Then use a second velvet brush to dry. Simple>fast>effective. I get the D4 at Parts Express for $3.92 a bottle. Also, before cleaning new records, just use your velvet brush first with no solution. Most of my new ones need no cleaning and are flawless with just using the velvet brush.

    I inherited my elder sister’s Grateful Dead album (their first album, 1967) and one side was apparently left out when someone painted white paint using a roller, resulting in tiny drops of paint that dried on the record. I tried to clean it off by washing twice in the Spin Clean. Then was able to flick a few spots off on smooth areas of the record, but not on the playing grooves, and I didn’t was to scratch it further. I researched on-line and found that vinegar should not harm the vinyl, so I used vinegar on a cloth to dab onto the spots, then cleaned again in Spin Clean - paint still there. Someone suggested that carefully applied heat might cause the paint to release. My ex-gf took the blow dryer so I tried heating the album a few seconds at a time in a microwave oven and got it warm. Paint would still not release. I think that the fact this paint might have been on the record for about 50 years made it very hard with no remaining flexibility. Anyone have any other ideas?

    • @TheBudgie29

      I use Tiny drops of Paint Thinners, directly to the top of the drop of Paint. Let this soak In from a minute. Then with a Wooden Tooth Pick dipped In the Thinners, just Gently move It up till It Pops off. Nothing to lose by trying It, has worked me for Years with No Ill affects.

  • @kensims4086
    @kensims4086 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I get the records wet and play them backwards. After the needle runs over dirt so many times one way it stays in the grooves no matter what. When i play them backwards while their wet it digs out all the pops and clicks somehow. I made plenty trashed records sound A+ doing that.

  • @ReasonablySane

    I use a paint edger with cheap shampoo/conditioner. I scrub in both directions and if the only problem with a record is that it is dirty, it makes it sound like brand new. It's especially useful with Goodwill finds.

    • @robertculp9189
      @robertculp9189 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Wells paint edgers work great! I use 80% distilled water, 20% IP Alcohol, then add about 10 drops jet dry in a 24 oz spray bottle as a wash. Also a similar mixture in a rinse bottle minus the jet dry. The paint edger pads are the perfect width to cover the vinyl area of an LP record. I use one edger for the wash and one for the rinse while wiping the record with a soft applicator pad in between. Check out Oddbox Topper on TH-cam. It’s actually his system although he vacuums the water off.

    Hi John. I volunteer at a Charity called Julias House in Poole and will e taking over the record section soon. Currently running the CD section, but some of the records we get in are buggered BUT if a bit of time is spent on them I reckon they can be fixed.
    But because of my disability in hands and legs it's difficult for me, so do you have any machines that you can recommend buying to do the job? I've only got £50 to spend so.....tight ain't the word.
    We get some classics in, early Beatles, Pink Floyd demos etc and because they've been left in garages/lofts etc they are mouldy buggers. Cheers Nick

    Just use a hand held hair dryer on the sticker. Use a pair of tweezers or fingernail and gently pull away the sticker a little at a time. Apply heat, pull a little on the sticker, more heat, pull. Repeat as necessary. Of course, remove the record before you do this. The hair dryer will be extremely hot when held close to the cover so watch your finger if you're not using tweezers. I've never found a sticker I can't remove like this. Very rare to damage the cover. If there is glue residue left on the cover after sticker is removed apply heat again, point dryer away and rub with your finger. Repeat as necessary.

    When you screw on that weight...doesn't it mark up the spindle from the threading or what ever is being used to grab on to the spindle to be tighten on? I am not a fan of record cleaners cause i had several bought used lp's that have been cleaned and i see water marks on the record in the dead wax areas the most that i had to wipe with a soft tv screen cloth or nonabrasive cd wipe cloth. I would even hear rice krispies cereal through out the album from it being cleaned.

Also rather than put that filthy record on your machine which will spread the dirt to all your other records, before doing that, rinse the record in distilled water. then with all that junk rinsed off your machine will work much better.

    Use some (lightly) UN-DU and Goo Gone to remove the stickers off of the jackets. Your bending the flimsy thin jacket at 2:08 and on. I will not use any brush on my lp's due to them lightly scratching the shit out of vinyl's surface. Your not putting the liquid all the way to the locked groove. Here we go with the tissue again. He dries one side and put's the lp down on top of a record jacket without drying the other side.

But he used to tell of how he'd been told once , farther south, 90 miles off Key West , to use rum to clean them instead. And often with great sadness he would tell new record collectors he'd meet of how because of blindly heeding to such crazy advice his most valued possessions got wrecked, and how much the fastest his rag, like that cloth of yours got on the account of you trying to use alcohol to make better the record you said you had bought in where... Anything chemical ruins a "acetate" record? It all depends on the chemicals involved. For example, you can use isopropanol/ethanol on any vinyl record for basic cleaning. Just don't use acetone, paint thinner etc.
    Just look up the material of the record and the chemical you want to use to clean it.

    • @alanmac63
      @alanmac63 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      read somewhere on the internet that depending on the Acetate material it may be very detrimental to introduce any water content to Acetates as some types actually absorb water and can cause a reaction between the Acetate and the metal platter beneath this can cause spalling / flaking of the playing surface
      which then is unrecoverable.....

    • @alanmac63
      @alanmac63 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nitrocellulose acetate decomposes continuously and over time
      reacts with water vapour or oxygen to produce acids that act as
      a catalyst for several other chemical reactions such as the
      release of palmitic acid, a white waxy substance. As with most
      chemical reactions, these reactions are accelerated with
      elevated temperature and humidity levels.

    Looks like those records are vinyl, not *acetate.* I guess acetate records ceased to sell a few years after WWII. You don't look that old to have been acquainted with *acetate* records. I'm older than you and all I saw was *vinyl* even in the early 60's.

    NEVER USE SOAP ON YOUR RECORDS!!! People please!!! It leaves residue and actually eats away your records!

    Vinyls?? I'd think you'd be old enough t know better! They're records, not vinyls and the plural of vinyl is still, "vinyl'. And sticking your finger prints all over the playing surface isn't helping at all, either.
