    Another reason for not filling a box too tightly with records that may contain the odd styrene record, especially a sales box, is because when people go through a sales box that's too tightly packed, rather than take the front few records out to make a bit of finger room, they tend to lift a record partially out then kind of bend it forward so they can read the artist / title better, and if that record happens to be styrene, they can accidentally crack it without realising. You won't know it's been cracked until later when it's too late and you're wondering how it happened. Also, if there are records in paper sleeves in that sales box, they'll get torn / ripped to shreds if the box is too tightly packed.

    Excellent stuff John. Great to see Sam adding his views. If only I was that organised when DJ'ing!
    Interesting information on record sleeve outers. There is a 'hard' poly sleeve that is totally safe and in fact protects labels against fading and with no chemical residue:
    Mylar outer sleeves for 45rpm 7" vinyl records.
    Crystal clear, archival, museum quality. 4mil poly. Available from the brilliantly named Sleevie Wonder on eBay

    I never knew about plastic sleeves until the last 10 years or so. I bought a record on eBay and it came in one. I have since covered my collection in them (about 2k lps and 6k 45s and 100 or so 78's). But these are the thin 2mil poly's, not these thicker ones you speak of. I hope these ore ok to use? I am concerned now.

      I reckon so... It's the thick stiff plastic sleeves we're talking about, mostly used in the late 1970s and in the 1980s. They also bend corners of picture sleeves. I don't pay loads of money for a record when it's packed in such a cover and if it's okay, I throw out the sleeve immediately and replace it.

  • @thesoultwins72
    @thesoultwins72 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only ever used a 'mild' soapy [tepid] water. It always fetched off any surface dirt and left the record shining clean. Never had any bad results or damage to the vinyl - but would like to hear your thoughts?

  • @chadergeist

    I would never use my fingernails or paper towels (etc.) on a record, cause of the scratches (light ones) that it will be place on the records and lp's.

    Eyup John, d'you remember, bastard K in 86, when Roy Harrison brought his dyaying collection to you and he got £460.00 for 'it'?
    He'd gone all blues night happy reggae in head and off to Sjnsplash but it was felt he'd not got 'what he could', shall we say.
    Whatever, it's great to see you're revived in the biz, post the vids, etc, even though your guides have put the obtainability of NS to the punters beyond their pockets - Ha!, just like it ever was. Such is the way of becoming addicted.

    John Manship, I actually have no problems with those misty blooms when poly plastics attack the records. It becomes a pain when those introduce hiss though. Is there a cure for it? Any cleaner or method of cleaning designed to remove it on the records?

  • @twitchygiraffe4636
    @twitchygiraffe4636 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a record shop in manchester that shall remain nameless that has been putting the record covers in the sections in PVC sleeves since day one?! And I mentioned this to them about the vinyl misting when you store them in these and they said they’d never heard of this? So it’s not common knowledge then??

    • @JohnManshipraresoulman
      @JohnManshipraresoulman  ปีที่แล้ว

      May be OK if they are in the open air on shelves, it's worse when they are tightly packed in boxes.

  • @sf1532
    @sf1532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The thing that will always boggle my mind is how so many collectors don't double sleeve. Your records are shaking around in a hard cardboard sleeve. It should be clean paper sleeve and then cross sleeve with the cardboard jacket to lock the record in place.
    Also, when you pull it out, avoid rubbing/grinding against rough cardboard sleeve.

    I have recently bought pvc record covers for my vinyl collection and have them in a record storage box, are they in danger, as I've spent a lot of money to keep my collection safe

    • @satinicole
      @satinicole 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pvc-sleeves mentioned in this video are the hard plastic ones with the, often, sharp edges. They were common in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. What John says is definitely true. I obtained quite a few records from a discotheque and all them records have bloom and hiss. It are not the rarest of the rare and so I'm upgrading these as the years go by. I haven't seen thick pvc covers for 7"-singles much in recent days, but there are still 12"-covers. It's the thin plastic sleeves that are okay.

    • @RedVynil
      @RedVynil 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wandagreer9144 Exactly!! And I just saw someone pour a can of that garbage into a wad of bread dough before baking it!! I can't drink ANYTHING that Coke makes without it screwing up my stomach!! I used to drink Hi-C during my breaks at work back in the late `90's and, about 20:00 after I went back to work, I'd have to spend maybe half an hour in the bathroom with a severe case of Hi-C squirts!! All this red stuff that I just drank came BLASTING out of me!! Then, I discovered it was made by Coke and stopped drinking it!

    I bought a wonderful clean record and it sounded awful. It's a trick to fool customers, the record LOOKS good but doesn't sound good - I guess the person who owned the record before me did the wonderful "scrub the record with alcohol" method

    • @wandagreer9144

      I have often noticed that an older record can look worse than it sounds, while a newer one can sound worse than it looks. This hold true for both vinyl and styrene.
