I only have summer basic lands. In the slow trickle, I noticed the same cards show up over and over again : swords, dtutor etc. but some others I've never seen at auction. Maybe because the wotc employees that kept them, were selective.
Revised and Summer Magic were eventually fully corrected and released, but not in English. Some of the most gorgeous cards I've seen are the French/German/Italian versions of Revised, and as a bonus there's both white- and black-bordered versions. And while they are not cheap (especially the black-bordered versions), they are at least obtainable.
Thanks for some insight on this. I remember trading for misprint Hurricanes at a magic tournament/convention around this time which would have been somewhere in either OH or IN. I swear that we had like 9 or 10 of these misprints so there were definitely some in circulation. I need to find my VHS tapes of those times as we were just a group of mid 20s kids playing, trading, and selling magic at $100 tables at events. Unfortunately those and many other more expensive cards were stolen and never recovered.
@@AlphaHoarder Yeah.. We had a small office space where I was writing software for PC at that time and we sold magic cards out of the front of it. The office happened to be a sublevel, with a window facing the parking lot, and someone just smashed it in and stole it all. Multiple Lotus, probably 50 Moxen, 200 Dual Lands, Antiquities/Legends, everything. Reminder at the time I think an Alpha Lotus was $75, Beta Lotus was like $50 Moxes were $20-25, and Duals were like $5-$7 max. Oh how times have changed. Police printed the place but never got anywhere. Wonder if they could look up the prints again almost 30 years later ;) How naive I was as a young adult.

I've heard rumors of pallets of summer magic floating around. And even though you're right, that the market does have some organic demand, the same person(s) has constantly listed high end summer cards for sale month after month, year after year. The difference between your supply of Raging Rivers and summer magic supply is that at the end of the day we both know how many Raging Rivers in total exist. In summer magic, a very small group of people know exactly how much summer magic exists and the rest of us are left guessing. Which gives us incomplete information against their complete information. Hence their ability to manipulate the market effectively for such a long time. Having said all that... if I could find a sealed summer magic pack, I would trade away a ton of my collection to own it.

Here's a somewhat unrelated but interesting thought: Magic, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! have expensive vintage cards because very few people thought to save them back in the day. In the modern day can any new TCG have that kind of organic beginning? Every new TCG has it's rarest cards slabbed "just in case" so do the original big three TCG's mark the end of organic rarity in TCG's? Not sure there's a right answer to that. 😂 Uncharted territory I guess.
What I do not like about summer is that every 3/4 months a fresh batch of graded summer cards appear on market, always sold by the same guy. But on the other hand, if you got to population reports you can see that there are VERY few graded summer cards compared to other sets, even alpha. So, as you say, I think that there is someone with a sizable stock of raw summer cards, which he intelligently slowly feeds into the market. BTW one of the best cards in my collection is the second best summer vesuvan doppelganger in the world (BGS 9 +), so I am not bashing the beauty of the set but the shadiness of its market.

Blue cards are stupidly nice in summer edition. Lands are very nice, specially duals. Green ones are the worst because of the nearly illegible text box. Black ones are also too dark. And white is meh. Red is average.
Personally I wont touch summer magic. Yes its fun, yes its super rare and yes it's gorgeous. However my goodness is it illiquid. Selling A/B/U is hard enough. Selling summer is almost impossible outside the US.
I honestly don't know why but I'd assume lack of depth in the market. A few pop up at certain stores on a roughly 6 month basis and every now and again some come up on eBay but we are talking under maybe 20 sales a year that are public. Most stores won't even touch them and the same seems to be true of a lot of collectors I know. I've seen exactly three summer cards in stores for sale in the last 10 years but equally I'm not in all the high end groups so it's more than possible sales are going through there.
I think this is something you go after when there's nothing left to collect in vintage mtg

Revised was the set i started with. I've always loved that goofy Serendib printing error.
Definitely avoid Summer then (and foreign Revised), they fixed Serendib.

You're right about red, the frame becomes so bright it diminishes the art.
