For £300 I'm well impressed. I wouldn't mind owning one myself. nice finish. Exterior styling was of its time. Yes I really like it. An interesting video which I enjoyed.
I was a taxi driver 2009 to 2013 (the financial crash meant I had to stop, and now I work freelance as a customer service agent), a Proton Impian was used as a taxi by another taxi firm, so I have seen one in real life But they were rare to begin with anyway, not that many were sold in the UK, and now 16 to 20 years later, even less of these cars will be on the road or in a reasonable state of roadworthiness It's a shame, they seem to be reasonably competent vehicles, and I am always a fan of an underdog
I read somewhere the chassis was borrowed from the Volvo S40. No wonder it looks like those boxy Swedish gems, but somewhat soften around the edges by Malaysian styling.
Got you a real bargin there, i use to own the older Proton, the one you have in you're video's, very reliable cars, would love to try find one just like this, it's a nice car.
Hi there again Jon. I am full of jealousy with your purchase. UK specs Waja are something which the home market never got. From 2000 to 2007, most of Waja sold in Malaysia has zero airbags and no ABS as well unlike your car which has twin front airbags and side airbags in the seats. Standard wheel size was 15 inch, except for the revised model in 2004 known as Enhanced Version or Waja EV which received the exact same 16" wheels as yours. We did got a limited period offer of the X trim variant though (1.6X, 1.8X) - bringing rear adjustable headrests and central armrest, 2 airbags, ABS, traction control and automatic climate control, among others. Most buyers in Malaysia did not take the option though (together with the scary Renault 1.8). Fyi, Waja was on the drawing board some time in 1997 together with the Campro power unit but the ex Prime Minister pushed for early production so in the year 2000 Proton launched the Waja with engines sourced of Mitsubishi and Renault. The Campro only made it the Waja in late 2007, and the sportier CPS in 2008 (finally we got something similar to the UK). However I believe the CPS with 125bhp Campro (a similar system licensed by Lotus to Porsche known as VarioCam) never made it to the UK. The European car market is hard to break with the domination of Ford and Vauxhalls in the UK. And especially the forever hatchback craze too.
You make good points there regarding the car specs. Some European car makers that sell in Asia or South America also don't fit the safety features as seen on the cars destined for Europe as they build them to a cost, and to satisfy local rules. Profit before safety.
I I absolutely love it. It makes me super nostalgic for the first one of these i ever drove at the Proton dealership i worked at. It too was an 05 plate in this colour but the GLXi instead. They actually drove and handled really well and i agree the Mitsubishi engine was so much better than the Campro which seemed to lack low down torque and loved to overrev. The wheels were always a weak point - they pitted after about 6 months - and the tracking is really easily thrown out by bumps. The colour coding on the steering wheel and gearknob was quite quirky. There was actually an exterior colour - it looked black but was actually a really dark purple - available that matched it. My first Impian demo - SP05BJY - was that colour. £300 wonderfully spent. Intrigued to see how the MOT and dad inspection go
It's interesting to note that, if the price of the car was 10,000 pounds in 2001 it is actually 700 pounds LESS than the corresponding base spec Waja price in Malaysia. And considering the fact that the Malaysian base spec has even less features than the UK base spec, the price difference would be way bigger. This explains the anger many Malaysians felt towards Proton. We paid more for less, and if we wanted any other car besides Proton or Perodua, we're paying so much more.
Glass headlights are a proper luxury feature these days. The un-fogged lights makes the car look in such good condition (let alone 'for its age'). The maps in the boot could be an inspiration for a road trip in it, either to Dumfries or a remaining Little Chef (if there are any?).

Protons were never sold here, as far as I know. But you manage to get me interested in this brand! 😂 The closest I could get to a Proton here would probably be one of their Mitsubishi-derived models, and even so, it would be an actual Mitsubishi instead of a Proton. Oh well, it is what it is...😅 Great car, Jon! Thanks for sharing with us!! 😎👍🏻
@@JonCoupland I'm in Brazil. There may be a few examples here and there, brought by Embassies, though I have never seen one. I've even seen Rovers, which is another brand that never sold their cars here. Fingers crossed to bump into one someday, who knows! 😆😁👍🏻
Hey Jon. Great video. For me, the Proton were the Dacia of their time (in the UK) BUT, where they had the advantage was the fact that as they were built in Malaysia, they could add more kit whilst keeping costs down compared to Dacia who were building in Europe were I can only assume their labour costs are higher. In terms of why they didnt take off in the UK you have to remember at the time the government were obsessed with CO2 and as such the VED was based on this which resulted in petrol engined cars being more expensive. If they had offered a diesel, it may have been more successful. Also, if im not mistaken, i believe these only got 2, maybe 3 stars in Euro NCAP whereas at the time, Renault had just got 5 stars on the same test. I always liked Proton, the old Persona / Wira which was basically a modified Mitsubishi Galant (or was it Carisma?) was a favourite of mine. The Savvy and Gen2 though, I'm not a fan of those.
I can't remember the last time I saw one of these! Very nice looking I thought and it's got racing pedigree - between 2002 and 2004, these were raced in the BTCC and they even won 2 races (admittedly, 2 out of 95 races)... Even being piloted by Scottish Touring Car legend, David Leslie! Nice car, definitely a bargain. Good to see one of these forgotten Protons saved. 😀

I really like this. Good luck with getting the Impian ship shape. For a £10,000 car in 2005 it does make me wonder why Ford Focuses and Mondeos were preferred. Were Protons and Peroduas subjected to strict import quotas at the time? 🤔

Looks like another FOTU winner from Coupland and Son to me! I remeber the Humberside constabulary using these in white and then Silver as Panda cars (hopefully that's the right terminology) about fifteen years ago. I know my Cousin once went up to Hull for some Proton I think Satrai parts.
Used to see quite a lot of these, I worked in the Stanley area (near Newcastle) for a few years, this is a fairly poor town and it had a Proton dealer, so you'd see loads of Protons buzzing around there about 10-15 years ago. Quite liked these - they were cheap even at 5 years old, and the owners in the area seemed to like them. I believe they were very similar mechanically to the Nedcar models (Volvo S40, Mitsubishi Carisma/Space Star) which were always solid, reliable cars even if a bit boring.
This Proton Impin is is very good condition and for a Proton fan boy an excellent car and one thing caught my the head lights how clear they are and then you mentioned they are glass they will never fade and what great condition the Proton is in
13:49 I don't know if this counts but back in 2005 Proton launched a longer wheelbase Waja called the Chancellor, it was equipped with the 2000cc 6A12 V6, and was the most expensive variant sold, even surpassing the Perdana's price tag currently sold at the time.
The button at 26:02 is actually the alarm reset button. When the alarm goes wonky, just turn your ignition and press the button. Walah your alarm system is reset. You will find that button in the Proton Savvy. Same function.
You can get a small condensation trap on a small coat hanger use in the car it will catch all the damp any pound shop or B & M store l use them there brilliant in the cars especially when storing for long periods of time this vehicle is a little gem you need heart radio for sound of the 70s and underselling and as you said bumps and paint work sorted by your friend the sooner the better period tires if possible 😊
In case you're wondering what that dotted button on the left at 26:05 does, Mr. Coupland, that button only unlocks the doors. If you are the front passenger and wants to leave the car after it stopped, press that dot button.
Hey Jon, how are you? We spoke in Facebook Messenger couple years back when I was about to write an article about you. At 26:05, the button with a dot icon is to disarm the immobilizer. Let's say if you unlock the car using the remote and there's some glitches with a blinking red light in the meter panel, you won't be able to turn on the engine. So, you need to slot in the key, twist the ignition on, press the dot button, it will shut off the blinking red light, and you will be able to start the engine. Hope this clarifies.
If only the Impian was on my 'cardar' back in 2001. Despite being only 23 at the time, I would have seriously considered chopping in my recently acquired 1994 Rover 214 Si for one if I'd known how much car I'd have got for £10,000.
Jon - for £300, given its mileage condition, given there are not so many left now in the UK (I’ve checked) you simply can’t go wrong - she seems a really honest straight car (albeit with the odd minor scrape here and there all fixable) - she deserves to be kept on the road - you cannot go wrong - she needs a loving home - Ray obviously loved her and by your reaction - I think you’ve fallen for her too 😆
That empty button on the dash next to the hazards and the fogs are the unlock button to unlock the car when the car locks automaticaly after 10kmh. Maybe your car doesn't automaticaly lock due to it being a GLS and not a GLX model but I can't confirm.
26:08 Hey Jon ! I am delighted that you are reviewing this magnificent Malaysian made vehicle. That button that you have mentioned is a kill switch for the alarm system when it turns on due to dead battery and others. I hope my comment helped you !
26:06 that's reset alarm button, if you unlocked the car with a key rather than the remote, it will sound the alarm and you have to press that to reset it.
@@JonCoupland anyways is rare to see a stock Impian here in Malaysia. Most of them are heavily modified and riced by their second owners. To get a clean one like yours probably owned by an old guy. I managed to get a grey stock Impian back in 2020. Most of it mechanical parts were factory. Slowly replacing one by one. I wanna keep it stock for now, borderline look like an unmarked cop car.
Well, this definitely does not look as cheap as 300 quid. But I expect the technical stuff to need a major overhaul (at this price point). Anyway, best option buying a car, an old-man-handled one. 👍🏼
Your ethusiasm is quite contagious, it is a good find. And I assume it will sail pretty smooth through its MOT. Getting on top of the small blemishes and cleaning is should be as enjoyable to watch. Keen to see what Dad thinks of it. I learn a lot about Protons😅
Bargain! Im pretty sure the alloys were corroded on all the Humbersides fleet, i dont think the lacquer was that great on them. The investigation teams used that colour plus an actual silver (still with a brown and beige interior) i wonder if they still have any spare parts kicking around at the workshop in Melton, probably not anymore.
I bet there are some bits hidden away on old garages somewhere. Depending on the success of the videos I may fork out and have the wheels refurbished but like everything... It's cost
Proton Waja had nothing in common with Volvo V40, not a single part interchangeable. The 2 things Waja shared with Carisma are just the engine mounting points and suspension mounting points. Even the wheelbase is different - Waja has 2600mm while both Carisma and S40 at 2550mm (showing even the floorpan is different). And while both Carisma and S40 have fuel filler door on the left, Waja has it on the right side of the car. Even windscreens and dashboards were all different. I wonder what made you wrote that.
@@fauzanriez9472 Proton themselves literally said that the Waja's chassis is a modified adaptation of the Mitsubishi Carisma / Volvo S40 platform. From an official press release, "The Mitsubishi 1.6 4G18 shared a chassis platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma. Interestingly, the Carisma also shared a platform with the first-gen Volvo S40."
@@JonCoupland well I guess if the officials didn't know what they were talking about one of the reasons why they failed to sell more cars in the UK, even before the era of stricter safety and emission laws.

If only the Impian was on my 'cardar' back in 2001. Despite being only 23 at the time, I would have seriously considered chopping in my recently acquired 1994 Rover 214 Si for one if I'd known how much car I'd have got for £10,000.
Absolutely! It's such a shame it never really took off
Are you gonna find the other wajas (Impian) with the other engines?
I think that would be quite a challenge! (i actually dont think we got the 1.8 Renault for long - if at all in the UK) - im ok with one Waja :)
Jon - for £300, given its mileage condition, given there are not so many left now in the UK (I’ve checked) you simply can’t go wrong - she seems a really honest straight car (albeit with the odd minor scrape here and there all fixable) - she deserves to be kept on the road - you cannot go wrong - she needs a loving home - Ray obviously loved her and by your reaction - I think you’ve fallen for her too 😆
Thanks for watching. It has seemed that good things have come to those who have waited 😄😊
In the UK this Waja is only £300 but over here in Malaysia, the secondhand is at about RM16,000.00 Hate our currency fluctuations
Wow! Thanks for watching
lovely
Thank you 👍
That empty button on the dash next to the hazards and the fogs are the unlock button to unlock the car when the car locks automaticaly after 10kmh. Maybe your car doesn't automaticaly lock due to it being a GLS and not a GLX model but I can't confirm.
Well we had a read of the handbook and apparently in this model it's to silence the alarm after unlocking with a key 😄
@@JonCoupland I guess it's different for different markets
26:08
Hey Jon ! I am delighted that you are reviewing this magnificent Malaysian made vehicle.
That button that you have mentioned is a kill switch for the alarm system when it turns on due to dead battery and others.
I hope my comment helped you !
Ah brilliant! Thanks for watching
26:06 that's reset alarm button, if you unlocked the car with a key rather than the remote, it will sound the alarm and you have to press that to reset it.
Ah brilliant! Thanks
Awesome find. Thank you for saying 'in the metal' rather than 'in the flesh' when referring to a car. It drives me potty.
You and me both!
😮 at Malaysia we call this car Waja
Awesome
That button you mentioned might be the alarm and immobilizer override switch.
I think you are right 👍
A guy a couple of doors down from me has a blue one of these, not in this condition though!
Great to hear its still on the road!
You got a bargain
I think so 😄
You have same exact interior as mine. But mine got a lot of water stains🤣.
Ah brilliant. I prefer this to the leather effect
I wanna keep it stock for now, borderline look like an unmarked cop car.
add a Proton Wira to your collection also
One day! Rare here
Looks like a good buy and hopefully not a goodbye once MOTd 😂
Hopefully not. My intention is to keep it as part of my collection 😄👍
Well, this definitely does not look as cheap as 300 quid. But I expect the technical stuff to need a major overhaul (at this price point). Anyway, best option buying a car, an old-man-handled one. 👍🏼
Fingers crossed should need nothing 🤞
How old is this car?
2005 - so 19 years 😄
Your slang look like richard hammond...😊😊😊
Wow, thanks
Lovely car and I reckon an absolute bargain. Candidate to take it to the festival of the unexceptional 2025 ?
It's sadly a wee bit too new BUT one day I do intend to take it
If Misses C asks you can say you’re playing with your Waja 😅
In the front garden
It's bad Jon get rid of it (I will take it off your hands) 😂
😄😉
Your ethusiasm is quite contagious, it is a good find. And I assume it will sail pretty smooth through its MOT. Getting on top of the small blemishes and cleaning is should be as enjoyable to watch. Keen to see what Dad thinks of it. I learn a lot about Protons😅
Fingers crossed. It's a good starter for 10 I think. 😄 Stay tuned for Dad's reaction
Ah the days when you could buy a decent car for a reasonable price.
Where have they gone eh?
It's cost
Proton wira aeroback UK spec
😄👍
@JonCoupland proton wira aeroback UK spec 1.5 atuo
This car chasis is from volvo
Yes ☺️
Proton nirvana
Absolutely!
I really like that car, very nice. I would have it myself if you should ever want to sell it 😉
Deal! But I reckon it will stay in my collection for a while 😉
You don’t think Ray has had any girlfriends in the back seat of this car then?
Who knows?! I didn't ask him!
I want to buy it sir £315 😭
Come get it
Its a mitsibishi charisma or volvo v40 proton lol
Absolutely
I had a charisma 1.8gdi hatchback in 97 was quick & 40mpg
Bargain
I think so 😄
