Antique copy lathe/duplicarver at ECL

  • This is a video showing how we make peavey and pick axe handles at ECL. I was able to acquire two antique machines, both well over 100 years old. The one I use regularly is a handle copy lathe. It was made in the late 1800's and weighs a ton. However, the thought that went into this machine and how it operates is really amazing. It can adjust to take stock from 12" up to as long as 6 feet in length. Originally it ran on pulleys from put-put machines, or raw horsepower, but now I have wired larger electric motors for turning. I also upgraded the chain/sprocket system so it runs smoother. I had the machinist next door (Lloyd Mauray at Ed's Shop, Keswick Ridge) manufacture the rounded cutting teeth for the cutter head, and I can file them to keep them sharp using a chainsaw file. Takes about 15 minutes to run the length of a peavey stock, so two passes is about half an hour to turn a peavey handle. Have a few other very interesting machines we will cover in the future.

That is great to see that machine running. I don't remember his name but I do remember 10 years ago or so you had that rig over at Catherine Szo's husbands place for some welding I believe. I had wondered how much you use it in your production. Thanks for posting this one and take care all.

@@RRaucina very interesting. That makes sense. The Canadian Science museum also had one, which is why I thought it might be Canadian. my bad

Are you actually selling any handles? Left an email a week ago. I know people are busy, but...
