I was a cabinetmaker for 38 years Buckin. It does my heart good to see you grab that 8 quarter hickory and cut it up......and make a nice axe handle! You are unstoppable my friend!

    Hey Buckin’ Billy Ray Smith,
My name’s Daniel, and the first time I held an axe was when I was about 7 years old. Ever since then, I haven’t let go. I’m 16 now, and recently, I tried making my first axe handle for a head that originally had a plastic one. It didn’t go so well-let’s just say it was a straight handle made from bamboo with no curves at all! On top of that, the knob was way too small, and some parts of the handle ended up way too thin.
I found your channel about a month ago, and I absolutely love it. I really appreciate your personality and how uplifting you are. Watching your videos has encouraged me to keep working with wood and strive to get better at it.
Thankfully, I haven’t attached the handle to the axe head yet, so I still have a chance to make a better one. The problem is, I’d really like to make a handle similar to the ones you make, but I couldn’t find a template on your website. I’m not sure if you share templates, but if you’re willing to, I’d really appreciate it.
If you sell axe handles, let me know-I’d be happy to buy one from you.
Thanks for all the inspiration and for lifting me up,
    Daniel

White Oak is gorgeous with that tight grain and I love when those medullary rays start showing up. And that smell...Oh man, I love the smell. Furniture, cabinets, boats, flooring, and handles on tools...I've used it everywhere. A chair maker in south eastern US, Brian Boggs uses it a lot and sometimes makes it jet black. He soaks steel wool in vinegar for like a week. When he puts it on the wood and it reacts with the tannins in the white oak and turns black deep into the grain. It's not a stain, it's a chemical reaction. It's one of my favorite woods. Love your enthusiasm! It lifts me up and brightens my day. So thank you for sharing these experiences.

My Granddaddy and I made handles of all kinds when I was a young fellow. We always made our handles out of young hickory and only the butt cut. My Grandad always said the young butt was tougher and more flexible. We usually got 4 handle pieces out of a tree. We then hand split it to get the grain oriented right. If we had extra handle pieces left over we would sink them in the creek until needed. They would keep a long time in the creek.

Grew up in the US, moved back home to Hungary recently and I now feel so much pain not having relatively cheap hickory. Our forestry sector is a mess here, our "best" wood is Black Locust AKA false acacia, good for furniture and posts but a little hard IMO for tools that get a lot of shock.

Just a tip here . When you make an axe handle, do not saw down the grain , best to cleave it as it follows the fibres and is far stronger . This is the reason so many axe handles nowadays do not last. They are only sawn nowadays to save money and get more handles out the stick
I read about axe handles failing on several axe enthusiast channels and this is the reason .

I want to say I never knew white oak was good for handle making. I just got up however, so there is that. On the other hand, white oak is really stringy, holds moister(take two years to season at minimum) and naturally weather and sun resistant. Great for decks and outdoor furniture. I retimbered a small bridge(20ftx30ft) with it some years ago, solo. Worked with a small saw mill. Fun project, set up pipe staging in a river, built the whole thing with a drill, impact driver and a climbers chainsaw. Carpentry is my favorite, I think Bukin is figuring out why.👍
