Yeah, I knew about this when I bought my new WiFi 6 router. But, I had used a SSID name in my old router which all my devices connected to with a stupid "&" in the name. The new router would not take the "&" in the SSID name, so I was stuck going around changing all the connection names in my devices. Live and learn.
While it's possible to connect a cellular router to your home router via ethernet, you might run into double NAT'ing, and slightly higher ping times and lower speeds due to the extra hop between the two routers. As an alternative your could just change the WiFi name and password in the cellular router's settings to be the same as in your home router's. Once that's set, turn off the power on the home router, turn on the power on the cellular router and all your devices should connect to it without having to change the WiFi name and password on all your devices. Personally I prefer to separate the 2.4 and 5GHz WiFi names simply because it's easier to tell which devices connect to which band. If you go with the solution above of using the cellular router only, at least one of the bands have to have the same WiFi name and password as in the existing home router, otherwise your devices will not connect. It's best to copy the exact same name and password as it appears in the home router in order to avoid any issues. ;)
Many cellular ISP's already have double NAT due to their CGNAT layer. There are a few ways to avoid adding another NAT layer in your home despite adding another device.
OK, I know some people wouldn't know that, but pretty standard stuff. What I'm more interested in is if you have flashed a router to DD-WRT and set it up as a VPN router? Looking to have a whole house go through VPN instead of having to set up every device. Thanks. Great channel.
Thanks Nate. It's strange and annoying that the router manufacturers don't provide instructions for when the user is replacing a router on an existing WiFi router.
I am switching from a sagecom to an lb link. I went into the setting in the lblink and all the info (name, password)is identical. After hooking it up It took a while for my computer to recognize it but eventually the WiFi connected. Now it connects and disconnects over and over. My computer WiFi settings don’t show the WiFi connection to other which is weird
So I have a Fios G3100. It just died(because they're terrible) and they are bringing me out the same exact model number. That means there should be no hiccups at all right? Except for any port forwarding rules I have to redo
Correct, just restore the settings to the same as before and you should be good. You can restore the wifi name/password and all your existing devices will automatically connect to the new router.
yes, you can copy over the same ssid and password and your devices will transfer over seamlessly (just don't have two non-mesh routers with the same ssid at the same time)
I just got the Verizon WNC-CR200a, I currently have a Wind stream DSL Modem. All WiFi devices thru Windstream, do I change the Verizon SSID and password to the same as Wind stream and will NOT need to change all my WiFi devices to Verizon? Sorry, I'm Not real knowledgeable in this field and I don't understand. Fyi, I tried T-MOBILE and changed T-Mobile settings to show the same as Windstream and it kept connecting to Windstream, so I have to reset and use a T-Mobile Ssid and password. ??? Thanks.
I'm getting ready to do this, do I change the Verizon modem to the exact as Wind stream first, then afterwards disable the Wind stream modem? If this is the way, will all WiFi devices (over 40l automatically connect?
Thank you Nate. You always talk about the details I’m wondering about. Saving me time and heart-ache when I pull the trigger. 💪👍💯
Glad I can help!
What a G man I was worried I'd have to reset everything, great vid

bummer. Some router also won't let you put a space in the password which is absurd

@@NaterTater - DMZ is one solution, got another?
@BillAnt passthrough/bridge and turning off NAT on the downstream router so its effectively an AP.
Nate , This is amazing per usual. Thank you for sharing this information
You're welcome. Thanks for tuning in! 🙂
@@NaterTater hope you got my $$ tip ☺️

yes and this router shown doesn't need to be flashed with DD-WRT to do whole house VPN th-cam.com/video/SI3aTL4HS1A/w-d-xo.html
@@NaterTater But you need to commit to cost of that router and/or VPN service.

i think this has the info i need to do just this. now, if only i could understand and implement it.

what devices would u try to connect to 5 or 6 g wifi
I tend to connect my higher data usage devices to 5ghz. Things like my TV, phones, tablets, computers.
When you have both 2.4 and 5 that are separated do you need "different" names and passwords?
Yes, different names/ssid. Password can be the same.
Ugh I can't paste it I got a question about removal of sim modification or tampering with certain products u like to talk about
I can't put screen shot on here I can't copy paste it but I need to know
what about a new combo modem with wifi built in - same ssid and password can be retained?
yes, you can copy over the same ssid and password and your devices will transfer over seamlessly (just don't have two non-mesh routers with the same ssid at the same time)
my new router connects to all my devices but shows me the red led for los any idea why?
What device shows the red led?
@@NaterTater the router
The led with los written on it turns on

correct, but you need to turn off or disable or change the wifi on the windstream to prevent your devices from keeping connected to it.

i was more looking like an hands on video of how to do this, like an instruction video to follow.
I can understand that but step by step by step instructions would be specific to each router so without knowing which router you have I can't do that.
