    Thanks Nate. It's strange and annoying that the router manufacturers don't provide instructions for when the user is replacing a router on an existing WiFi router.

    So I have a Fios G3100. It just died(because they're terrible) and they are bringing me out the same exact model number. That means there should be no hiccups at all right? Except for any port forwarding rules I have to redo

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Correct, just restore the settings to the same as before and you should be good. You can restore the wifi name/password and all your existing devices will automatically connect to the new router.

    OK, I know some people wouldn't know that, but pretty standard stuff. What I'm more interested in is if you have flashed a router to DD-WRT and set it up as a VPN router? Looking to have a whole house go through VPN instead of having to set up every device. Thanks. Great channel.

    • @NaterTater

      yes and this router shown doesn't need to be flashed with DD-WRT to do whole house VPN th-cam.com/video/SI3aTL4HS1A/w-d-xo.html

    I know this video is old, but I am looking for some help. I have spectrum Internet and I replaced my spectrum router with an Orbi router. The problem I’m having is that all of the devices and my Internet speeds are showing 50 or 60 download when the old router was showing 700. Would you happen to know what’s causing this or what some common mistake mistakes would be for someone that replaces their ISP provided router with their own router?

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @x86ed there are many things that could cause that. Typically the ISP provided units are "gateways" that combine a modem and router and thus you arent able to "replace" the Spectrum router, rather you "add" to it. Is that the case here? You can then change settings on the spectrum gateway to put it in bridge or passthrough mode (and turn ofd its wifi) and that might help your speeds. If you cant figure that out then you could instead setup your Orbi as a "AP mode" or access points that dont do DHCP.

    • @x86ed
      @x86ed หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ i’m actually not 100%. I know that I have two separate units that they referred to as the modem and router, but I don’t know enough about it to know if that’s what’s going on. As far as putting the gateway in bridge or pass-through mode, I’ve heard people say that before I’m just not sure how to do that either lol

  • @Bass.Player
    @Bass.Player ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you have both 2.4 and 5 that are separated do you need "different" names and passwords?

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, different names/ssid. Password can be the same.

    Okay, so when I went from my arris surfboard to my Motorola modem/router it told me on the directions I could do exactly what you said. I have many household hookups that go through my Wi-Fi and did not want to change them. They gave me an IP number on the instructions to sign into so I could bypass the configuration and do exactly what you said. However, my Wi-Fi device would not download it saying it wasn't safe or else it kept timing out because it was taking too long to load. I called Xfinity and they helped me finish the installation and got it up and working .I could not get a hold of Motorola for the life of me and I called Arris. They told me it was impossible because it's a modem /router combo. Is there any way to go around that and still do it? I am beside myself thinking I have to hook up all of these household devices.(Elderly and not the best at doing all of this)

  • @ErnieMayberry
    @ErnieMayberry ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah, I knew about this when I bought my new WiFi 6 router. But, I had used a SSID name in my old router which all my devices connected to with a stupid "&" in the name. The new router would not take the "&" in the SSID name, so I was stuck going around changing all the connection names in my devices. Live and learn.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bummer. Some router also won't let you put a space in the password which is absurd

    • @JD-happycamper

      I had the same thing happen. Finally got into the new router to change it to my old modem/router information. I got a notification it wouldn't take a "-" In my password. Now I'm having problems changing all of the SSID and passwords to my home devices

    While it's possible to connect a cellular router to your home router via ethernet, you might run into double NAT'ing, and slightly higher ping times and lower speeds due to the extra hop between the two routers. As an alternative your could just change the WiFi name and password in the cellular router's settings to be the same as in your home router's. Once that's set, turn off the power on the home router, turn on the power on the cellular router and all your devices should connect to it without having to change the WiFi name and password on all your devices.
    Personally I prefer to separate the 2.4 and 5GHz WiFi names simply because it's easier to tell which devices connect to which band. If you go with the solution above of using the cellular router only, at least one of the bands have to have the same WiFi name and password as in the existing home router, otherwise your devices will not connect. It's best to copy the exact same name and password as it appears in the home router in order to avoid any issues. ;)

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many cellular ISP's already have double NAT due to their CGNAT layer. There are a few ways to avoid adding another NAT layer in your home despite adding another device.

    • @NaterTater

      yes, you can copy over the same ssid and password and your devices will transfer over seamlessly (just don't have two non-mesh routers with the same ssid at the same time)

    I just got the Verizon WNC-CR200a, I currently have a Wind stream DSL Modem. All WiFi devices thru Windstream, do I change the Verizon SSID and password to the same as Wind stream and will NOT need to change all my WiFi devices to Verizon? Sorry, I'm Not real knowledgeable in this field and I don't understand. Fyi, I tried T-MOBILE and changed T-Mobile settings to show the same as Windstream and it kept connecting to Windstream, so I have to reset and use a T-Mobile Ssid and password. ??? Thanks.

    • @NaterTater

      correct, but you need to turn off or disable or change the wifi on the windstream to prevent your devices from keeping connected to it.
