  • Hunting parts and negotiating deals is one of the more satisfying and fun aspects of the car hobby, but strategically buying and storing certain types of parts in bulk should be part of your long term strategy if you plan on staying in the world of cars.
Here's a breakdown of our latest Facebook Marketplace score and how it all fits into the bigger picture.

every now and again i would slap together a "cleaner", which was someone's roller that i could put a few of my parts on to flip at the spring swap meet. wasn't always the best street and strip car, but there was typically enough go-fast parts on it someone could take it the next step further.

I had a '69 Cadillac that had a rear window leak and the entire interior rusted out. I advertised some parts on marketplace, but they weren't selling. Finally a guy drove three hours from Dallas for a handful of parts. I filled the bed of his truck with everything I could get rid of. I wanted it out of my shop, but I couldn't stand to see such beautifully manufactured parts go to waste.

for my 69 GTO i found a $425 4 door 1971 LeMans. the gas station garage who had it delivered it for free the next week when they had a rig headed out my way. plucked the 400/THM400/10 bolt LSD rear, took out the T3 headlights, pulled out the dashboard and gave it free to a guy who just wanted the front windshield (like i was going to risk him breaking it in my yard). If he was smart he parted it out more, but i sold the dash for $400 and had a $25 drivetrain to hotrod.
playing with cars CAN be affordable so long as you own property and tools :) but seriously, it's a case of working smart not hard like everything else in life.

If you're going to run nitrous you're better off renting and filling a mother tank and setting up your own fill station there's multiple ways of doing it pretty cheap and easily you'll save money in the long run! Just like your big CO2 argon or helium tanks except you can transfer from your mother tank to your smaller bottles you just need a way to weigh it which can be done with a cheap digital scale also heating and cooling the bottles to help with transfer can be done with ice water and cheap electric heating pads!

I build hot rods and custom cars for a living. I save take off parts, extra wiring, and stuff people just want to get rid of. Building street rods is a good way to get traditional hot rod parts. When I wire cars I save all the extra wiring and parts that don't get used. I can usually do the 4th car by only getting a new fuse panel.

So true UTG and things I dedicate my life to... right down to how & why I bought my house (it's zoned for this stuff as well). Everything has value, you just have to see the value in what others over-look. Right down to saving as many nuts & bolts as possible. This week I set up my lift and had to run to town to get 10 grade 8 bolts to finish it up..... it was over $20 for just nuts and bolts. This stuff adds up quick, and I lost an hour and a half of daylight doing it. It pays to save.... for sure!

  • @alanmoore78

6:24 That's exactly the thing, you gotta look for the value in a sale ad. Sure you need a $300 thing and you see an ad for that thing for $200, you go get it. But if you also see an ad for the thing for $200 in a pile of other things, you DEFINITELY go get that. Goes the same for tools. This is why I haven't bought a lot of new tools lately, I've instead been buying whole toolboxes and lots of tools for a pittance at garage sales and estate auctions. I still have a pile of little 20 inch Craftsman tool boxes in my shop that I haven't even opened yet to go through as I'm waiting on another decent paycheck to get a roller bottom chest for the decent $30 top chest I started using. Then I can pick up some drawer liner to sort and organize what I already have, add to it from the auction wins, and see what's left over. I might keep a couple of those 20 inch boxes for mobile tools, and then pile the other stuff I don't want in the others and give it away. It's going to be useful to someone else if not me, and I need the space for new stuff eventually. Some guy with a family who finally got out of renting and bought a house is going to need those tools I won't be using on a car anyway.

Great insight into the value of building an inventory of materials. It's like how artists stock their supplies - they don't go out and buy each color of paint as they need them while painting something. And here's the kicker: the artist's painting won't break down and leave them immobile until they can find the exact obscure paint in the hue they need in the moment.
People often think, "If I need X, I'll get it at the parts store," just assuming they'll actually have X in stock - or even sell it at all! There's more and more stuff that parts stores just don't offer anymore, and that's only gonna get worse. CYA and keep your personal inventory as stocked as you can while still keeping it manageable.

  • @ateamfan42
    @ateamfan42 ปีที่แล้ว

The trick to putting stuff "on the shelf" is being organized enough that years later when you need an item, you remember which shelf on which you put it. For some people, their "shelf" is a big pile of junk on the floor in the corner of the shop (or sometimes many piles in many locations). Then the time savings goes out the window trying to find the item you know you have "somewhere".

HUH?? I remembered a bunch of stuff i had bought second hand and placed away for "in case i need" and sure enough after searching it, there was a new box of plugs/kit there. cheers tony you never know when ....

The problems with doing this are:
    1) Space. You need a ton of space to stockpile parts.

My father would buy crap a yard sales auctions and estate sales. Its great to have a ton of random parts/stuff on hand but that random stuff builds up and starts to get in your way also. but seriously, if you pack rat, do your fam a favor and list what it's worth and what website to sell it on. i just had an old friend croak and i wasn't made aware until i went by his place and saw the dumpster...he had a trucking company, i would have LOVED to gone thru it. Before that i went thru an estate sale of an old small engine repair biz. one of those tucked back from a city street, you didn't know it was there unless you knew it, a cinderblock building with one big room divided up by shelving. the son was looking to sell--anything you laid hands on was $1. had i the space, i would have loaded up on chainsaw engine and lawnmower engine parts and hit the swap meet the following week to sell at three times the price.

They say Uncle Tony is so tough, he doesn't go to the hospital after flying off a motorcycle, he only temporarily looses slight interest in his hobbies.
They say Uncle Tony is so tough, he doesn't get road rash, the tarmac he scraped along is simply stripped off the road.
They say Uncle Tony is so tough, he can adjust the tappets on a fully warmed up V8 with his bare hands.
They say Uncle Tony is so tough, he can beat panels into shape over his knee, he has no need for a block, dolly or English wheel.
They say Uncle Tony is so tough, he checks for spark like normal people check 9V batteries, with his tongue.
They say Uncle Tony is so tough, he once pushed Uncle Kathy 40 miles back to their home, she was at the wheel of a motor home at the time, he then removed the 440 and Uncle Kathy rebuilt it and fitted it to the charger, while Uncle Tony scrapped the motor home, using only his fists.

Everyone says i’m crazy to hold onto random hardware and brackets I find. Let me tell you, the number of times it kept work going in the middle of the night when the stores are closed is not countable

There’s a tipping point wherein you amass so much stuff that you can’t find what you need, but you know that you have it.
    That’s when I just buy new. 😂

while i don't recommend having a stranger come to your house (and falling and suing you the property owner) i do love going to someone's house to buy...and looking around. I scored a free corvette 4 speed from a guy cleaning out his garage and selling me a $50 EFI setup. another one gave me his fan shroud he was just going to toss because he was sick of waiting for flakes to show up to buy it while picking up his $25 ford 302 block. someone else gave me a pertronix kit for $1 while buying his $25 snow blower as he was moving to FL that weekend. I got an Olds 455 for $150 and because the kid couldn't bother to be there for the sale, his old man offered me the cam--an Engle unit--and the heavy cast iron intake--an $800 442 unit from 1972--for free so he wouldn't have to toss it out. Two months ago i nabbed a chevy 400 with a spare cast iron intake--turned out to be a late corvette unit--for free. I've cleaned out garages of the big stuff sellers wanted to get rid of or buyers wanted to get out of the way, and to pay me back was allowed to take coffee cans full of fasteners--this was before the pandemic shortage woke us all up--and a soak in a 50/50 brine of vinegar and salt for a month and they were good to go.
Always bring extra cash when roadtripping off to buy something--once i passed an indoor flea market and on the way back scored a Chris Craft dashboard for $80 with all the gauges. it really helps to show up being a nice, friendly person--i've snuck deals out from other sellers who showed up ready to prove what level of d--k they were to the seller.

TONY! , How about listing an address to send you these small good usable old vintage parts ,that I have no need for? Some of us have to De-clutter due to age. This all comes free, Maybe you can cover shipping? YOU'LL be surprised what people would send you because you have a likable personality. Give a shout out of what you need, and get ready to build a parts department.
