Parts That Don't Fit And Our Efforts To Smoke Out The Rats Of The Classic Car Industry

  • The disaster of a 1960 Ford Pickup we featured the other day is only the latest of dozens like it we have encountered like it, where an unsuspecting customer is taken to the cleaners by classic car dealerships and unscrupulous body shops. Now we think it's time to take action and really do something about this epidemic of thievery that ultimately hurts us all.

My lawyer begs to differ. It didn’t take him long to get the body shop that tried to rip me off on my old project back in line. The body shop owner is used to dealing with pissed customers and their threats. But when a little soft spoken jewish guy walks in speaking legalize, it tends to put the shop owner on his heels when the lawyer starts spitting numbers and statutes. I just wanted the shop owner to fulfill the contract. I didn’t want to get over on him. I learned a lot about both sides of the business. It’s much easier to just do your homework, find a good reputable shop, and make sure everyone is on the same page in writing.

Went down that road with my Dad's classic car after he passed. It sat basically unused for a few years, and once the great reset began in 20' I convinced Mom to let me fix it up and sell it (52' Ford crestline Victoria). Beautiful paint, chrome up the wazoo, crager wheels, high quality upholstered interior, but ran like crap, and was scary to drive - loose steering and meh brakes. I figured no big deal, wheel bearings, tie rods, brake rebuild - done. Boy was I naive. Whoever restored it (probably mid 80's - cassette stereo, and late 80's mustang power steering pump) converted it to 12v, dropped a 289 in it, C4 auto, Edelbrock 4b/intake, front disc, A/C, headers, aluminum rad, etc. But they cobbled the steering linkage and hydrologic lines/cylinder from a scrap pile 60's and early 70's Ford and Lincoln parts, all leaking and worn out. Both kingpins were original stock, and roasted. Front hubs were built by a trailer manufacturer no longer in business. Ignition was used duraspark ll components, but no ballast resistor, and they kept the original 6v cloth ignition wiring, just buried it under layers of electrical tape. I had to be Sherlock Holmes just to figure out the origin of the some of the worn out parts, and modify a bunch of them just to put it back together. Took me 3 months of work and headaches, but when it finally rolled out of the shop it ran great, and handled like a different car. It was fun to drive! I only wish Dad could have been there for that liftoff. It would have put a smile on his face.
This weekend is the 2yr anniversary of it's sale. A guy drove from 3 states away Thanksgiving weekend to purchase it. Hope he's enjoying it, took a lot of blood sweat and tears to bring it back to life.

@@Peter-V_00 is that a penton in your pic?
Totally agree. Dad was unhappy about the way it ran, thought it was a carburetor issue and made all sorts of adjustments, but couldn't dial it in.
I've no doubt now it was the ignition and wiring. I learned no ballast resistor with duraspark ignition fry's coils and solenoids, plus the 70 year old 6v ignition wire was bleeding voltage everywhere. I made long leads and ohm tested everything. Had to replace all of it. TBH it was a pretty, shiny fire hazard on wheels.

I've dealt with the steering box issue on a few vehicles.... the most memorable was my 1990 GMC K1500. I went through two Rockauto boxes - while they did fit, both had essentially as much slop as the original. I ended up putting in a Red Head box and all was well. Later on, I was able to determine that a Rock Auto/Parts store box "rebuild" is just a seal replacement... never solving the slop that essentially all original boxes have.

@@MrTheHillfolk The problem with the box is likely the LARES sticker on the side. This seems to be the rebuilder that a lot of power steering parts the Rock uses. While I am not that familiar with the internals of the LARES steering boxes, I am with some of their control valves, and they are either poor quality rebuilds or Argentine or Chinese repros.

I've bought many parts from Rock Auto because they had them in stock where my regular suppliers were backordered for several weeks or, indefinitely. However, any time I order parts online, they're always name brand parts. I get the manufacturers part # off of the website (it's always there somewhere), then, I search the part manufacturers site to get the real applications for said part. I have a parts store box in one car, and while it at least works and doesn’t leak puddles on the floor, it doesn’t come anywhere close to the Firm Feel box in terms of precision, consistency, on-center feel, and backlash. It’s worth every penny if you’re going to actually drive the car much.

We should start a similar thing for car manufacturers pumping out absolute crap, built with low-bidder garbage for stratospheric prices the past 20+ years. It's got REAL bad in the past 16 model years. '07-up are just terrible. Not to mention the way they engineer things. If I was a kid working on this crap, I'd quit before I ever got started!! Never realized how good we had things in the 70's & 80's, even with how bad certain models were. Never knew how bad things could actually get!

I try to be careful with what I order from Rock, for just that reason. I've only ever gotten one incorrect part from them, but was still able to use it. It was a Cherry Bomb muffler which was an eighth or quarter inch larger than the description. It was in their universal parts section. I had adapters on hand. Rock SHOULD offer a service where they photograph the part for you before they ship, to avoid wastes like the transaction in this video. I'll bet another customer hogged out that mounting hole before they returned it to Rock...

It took a couple weeks scrounging local wrecking yards (we didn't have the internet we have today back then) to find a pump and the proper brackets, and I bought new hoses. Even from Barrett Jackson, or any other name brand auction houses. One in particular was a silver 70 Chevy short bed. Perfect paint, low, looked super slick. But had spray paint over the old worn out control arm bushings and ball joints with 3/8 of an inch up and down play, rusty separating trailing arms with oblong holes for u bolts so the rear end felt like it was moving around under the truck just moving it across the parking lot, and cut springs to lower it, rag joint was new tho(because you can see it from under the hood....) It's not just old cars though, even cheap used car market you have to watch out.

On top of that there's the, I've got it apart, may as well do this other bit... Next thing you know you've rebuilt most of the car (I've did a couple of wee jobs, that turned into heads off... exhaust off, may as well take the engine out type things.
I was always thankful that in old Vauxhall cars (I'm in Scotland) from the 80s at least, to change a clutch, all you had to do was drive the front up a ramp, take off about 6 bolts, drop a plate, push in the pressure plate, clutch plate pulls out, bearing and pressure plate comes out, reverse the process to get the new bits in, stick the cover back on and you're good to go, 30 minute job. Also, almost any engine could be put in any of their cars, same mounts in the same locations (GM products)... Just, you know... Don't tell the insurance company... 😆
    Anyhoo...
Josh seems to have the right attitude for working on the old cars. If it needs doing, do it and he's asking the questions as he's going. I don't want to seem condescending but that's how I determine, early on, if an apprentice is going to be any good and worth my effort to train them and I think it applies when someone's picking your brain in something like this too... No such thing as a stupid question as it reduces the chances of stupid mistakes.
It's a shame Graveyard Cars is a thing already as I think it would make a good name for your new name n shame segment... Although these people seem determined to put people in their graves as opposed rescue Mopars from ending up on the scrapheap.

Got it in, realized my mistake, shipped it back and paid a restocking fee and return shipping. Which I didn't view as a big deal, my mistake ya know? Then I ordered one for without a factory headliner. It was the EXACT same one, absolutely no difference between it and the one I shipped back. So I called them, thinking this has to be a mistake. No, it wasn't. And they were extremely rude about it. Basically I went the long way around to pay more for the same part, plus return shipping, plus a restocking fee. I'll still buy from there, but only if I know the exact part number of what I need before I order it, never use them as a guide as to what is the correct part.

Good shops charge a lot of money for the labor to do it right. Shoddy shops do it for half price and people get what they paid for… it pays to get referrals and get several quotes and estimates. If one shop is much cheaper than the others….stay away from them!

The reality of it is, if I see these disparities THEN how much of this shadey work is really going on? One of the main things that made me take control of my car repairs and have a more understanding goes back to my early 20's, when I took my '80 Z28 to a well known tune up establishment and asked them for a tune up which included new spark plugs. After I got home and was looking under the hood I was able to see that the two most rear plugs on both banks were still rusty looking. I had this sinking feeling and was absolutely appauled at the thought that they ripped me off. Long story short, the manager said , "yes, those are hard plugs to get to besides the mechanic is having personal problems etc etc....." I applaud your efforts to root out the bad actors in the industry and wish you well in your endeavors. This kind of crap needs to be erased from existence... The red Ford F100 has a wealth of examples of what not to do and what to look for... I don't know the ins and outs of Tennessee law, but that gas tank suspension issue needs to be run by the criminal negligence statutes to see if anything will stick... There is no way that was "acceptable". I can't even imagine a shop, that does shoddy work by design, letting that out on the street.

I would be one of those people at greatest risk because I believe cars are made to be driven and I would drive it. Some of those disasters make my old beaters look pretty safe. Never be scared to call them out. That kind of business practice should never be allowed in any field. Nothing short of liars and thieves. I'd always be scared of the liability of call someone out on such nonsense. Glad you got what it takes.

i as well feel really bad for the lady who got the shoddy work done on her 1960 f100. i own a 1960 ford that i have done all the work on. but it is just a beat up work truck so i dont feel bad if there is little body filler.but i was amazed at what a terrible mess that truck was underneath! and the fuel issue could have been avoided with a fuel filler hose and a few hose clamps but i guess the tank would have to be lower for that. the fuel line coupler from the fuel pump to carb was really a nice touch also.love your channel keep up the good work

I bought a similar close ratio steering box for my G-Body and it was perfect. Maybe you just need to return it and ask for a replacement. Could be a fluke. If it happens twice, well.... that just sucks.

Uncle Tony: Those people at the "Holler" should be in JAIL!
