Flea is asking us all to get out of our own way, and if you’re looking for joy it's hiding behind gratitude. To be kind and gentle when you look within, to make friends with parts of yourself you've been at war with. Then when it's time, to play it forward and turn your passion into purpose. I love his gentle soul.
Easy to say when you achieved complete autonomy over your life. Most people can not "choose" to give a closer look because they never get the time needed to question their own bitterness. It just keeps on riling up. I do agree that being grateful does help immensly though. But it is not as profound and omnipotent as you might think.
14:40 I love what flea is talking about here. Not all meditation is blissful. The uncovering work is deep. Saw him at summer solstice celebration. I was a few years deep into both bass and meditation, living with uncut hair and beard at an ashram. I let him be, after we gazed at each other for a bit, though I desperately wanted to talk shop about music 🙏
As the years go by the more i discover about "Flea" the more i love him. Such a humble man, even after all that massive success and renown. He is in every sense "living the dream". Everyone has their ups and downs, but he has the right mindset to just focus on the next happy thing, learn from the past but focus on the now. Live in the moment. And still, he thrives on looking at other people. Impressed by others skills and knowledge, always intrigued to learn and better himself. I am a totally different person, but in so many ways exactly the same as him with the same drive and will to live in the "now", the same excitement of others exceptional skills. I'm 49 years old and still learning and yearning. Imho he has what most people dream of. He works with one of his passions and on the meantime he can work on his other passions due to his success....and always being ever humble about it.
flea is bursting at the seams with life and passion. i genuinely believe he's one of the best, most pure, good, people ever to have lived, and certainly on this timeline- i've said that for years; he just exudes good. he's so profoundly graceful for the life he worked so hard for, also to be alive at all, and is an eternal student, despite being a master of his instrument. a wise, beautiful, endlessly curious, soul. truly rare. i'd give anything to meet and just chat with him one day.
Flea's sickness, ailments, depression and trauma after getting sober is commonly known as PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome). It's a real thing. I quit drinking and using in 2010. After 90 days in inpatient treatment I remember the isolation, fear, anger, panic attacks, debilitating depression, tears and shame that continued for over three years. I went to AA/NA meetings everyday and was going to a psychologist twice a week. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Conan - I had no idea you were expanding your team like this. This was one of the best podcasts I’ve heard in quite a while, with some real pearls of wisdom and self help and love from the great Flea and Ted Danson (Woody rocks too). I’ll be keeping my eye out for the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast from now on - which is also one of the dopest podcast titles with such perfection of meaning and use of pun behind the former Cheers alums. I used to watch that show every week. Congrats Conan!
Thanks for having Flea on. I’m going to be honest, I was hesitant to watch this particular podcast because I didn’t know who he was but I did and I can tell you it was a great podcast thank you thank you thank you.
You really need to keep these going for longer when needed, this one could've easily been twice as long. Love Flea, such an inspirational human being. Great stuff!
@@BARTFUNKBASS A favorite from his memoir - “I was a freed man. All that mattered was the integrity of motivation, the ability to express your own world, your own emotion, with whatever vehicle was available to you.” - Flea on listening to The Germs album GI.
Flea has always been one of my favs, just light and love outta this guy. He's such a great person inside and out. I love seeing emotions and him being a REAL guy who also happens to have feelings and FEELS them. Ooof just crying here. So glad he's healthy and thriving rn.
He is so inspiring to me in that way, being so spiritual, humble and loving, I'm becoming the man I've always wanted cause I'm not afraid of being sensitive and loving to my close one's and in life in general ♥️💖♥️
Many years ago in Santa Barbara, Ted Danson and his beautiful wife were sitting directly behind me at a Ray Lamontagne concert. There was a very stoned super fan of sorts dancing wildly in the aisle nearby who kept shouting “EVERY TIME! EVERY TIME!” after each song. Eventually after several rounds of this, I heard Ted shout “Every other time!” and I couldn’t stop laughing
I'm glad Flea brought up the live music scene. There was a lot of great live music in the 80's and early 90's. Local bands that might or will eventually make it big to odd ones who may never play another gig. Lot of great sounds to listen to.
i've never thought flee was so profound, i always thought of him as one of the rock gods, insane lives, drugs, etc... love that guy. when flee said that woody is a troublemaker... you know how insane you have to be...? 🤣🤣🤣
Flea cries a lot but maybe it’s because he is more thankful and in touch with himself and values, Truely values the good things he has and the hard times that got him There. Maybe we all need to cry more… great person amazing musician and soul…🤘🤘🤘🤘⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Flea is a incredible person and legendary bassplayer. Show emotion and beeing open in this video takes courage and i love how he speaks over his life and i can listen to this for hours.
I love your talent and all you do flea ! Love the show in Pittsburgh this year - I saw you guys in early 1990’s at lalapolloza. Same venue 34 years later I love the energy between you and John I went to as many atoms for peace shows as I could But u really wanted John to come back Thank you guys C
Admittedly I was not aware of this fella Flea. I have heard of the RHCP but it's not my cuppa tea. That said, I really enjoyed listening to him and his telling of his life and experience. I loved that story of his daughter telling him to her he's the best dad. That was great. If she says he be the best dad then enough said. Best wishes from 🇬🇧
I remember in Dansons show The Good Place they would say if you ever saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers in concert you automatically go to the Bad Place. Thought that would have come up in conversation and they would have a great laugh about it.
37:05 is exactly what’s happening in nyc to an incredible degree. The underground scene here and these musicians who make up this city are just absurdly beautiful and revivalistic 🌊🌊
I was born and raised here and saw this all unfold. I would love to give Flea recommendations for the bands here that could help him recapture that experience of abundance/ live music club magic. Maybe one day witness or take part in this network of experimentalists and rockers here 🤞
Great Interview. Hyperborea my exist at the center of our Plane directly under Polaris at Magnetic North. If we stay here we die. We have nothing to lose.
I started Vipassana meditation thanks to the Chili Peppers. I didn;t even know vipassana was the kind of meditation they did. I just was sick with my life and stumbled upon it. Later I found out I they had done the same retreats.
Interesting and cool interview/chat. I had no idea Flea and Woody were buddies although it's no surprise. I knew less about Flea, other than his music, than Woody or Ted.
Part of the premise of the show is that Woody will show up to introduce his friends. But its doubtful he wants to be part of the rigamorole that is recording ads and taking part in other people's publicity tours (which is a big part of the podcast circuit these days).
The painting Flea was talking about is Saturn Devouring his Children. Saturn was the leader of the Titans, the elder gods, and hears a prophecy that his child will dethrone him to rule the universe (just as he dethroned his own father Uranus) so out of madness driven by fear and jealousy, he begins eating them. When his sixth child Jupiter is born, his wife disguises the child as a stone so he swallows the stone. His stomach upset by the stone, he vomits up his other children. Jupiter eventually dethrones him and he and his brothers and sisters become the first generation of the newer, Olympian gods. When Goya painted this, the Spanish Inquisition still loomed large, and one interpretation is that it could respresent the mad insanity of the church persecuting members of their own congregations (often called children) out of thier fear of losing power. Something that was already happening in Goyas lifetime with the secularization of governments during the American and French Revolutions. It fits so perfectly into this conversation about emotional and spiritual struggle, and setting aside fear and ego, I just had to share.
He got chronic fatigue from PAWS. It's post acute withdrawal symptoms. I quit drinking five months ago and have been experiencing a lot of fatigue and a ton of brain fog and forgetfulness. I feel dizzy a lot as well. It can take months or sometimes years to feel normal.
Flea is asking us all to get out of our own way, and if you’re looking for joy it's hiding behind gratitude. To be kind and gentle when you look within, to make friends with parts of yourself you've been at war with. Then when it's time, to play it forward and turn your passion into purpose.
