I mean I grew up with Nintendo game cube then went to the wii/ds lite, then to the Xbox 360 them to the PS4 a coupe of years ago and have been playing PS4 since, now I’m gonna buy a switch lite and can’t wait to get back into Nintendo the will forever be my childhood
I had both and I liked them both. I'm not really on any side. The only thing I can really say is that I prefer the 360 controller over the ps3 controller.
As a gamer never have I saw a console war like this. So much dedication, so much time the amount of arguments I saw in school over the Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii. This is truly the biggest console war.
It's actually incredible to see Sony learned their lesson from the Ps3, and was going all out on the Ps4, while Microsoft did a complete 180 from the 360 to the one as well

Yeah 101 + 2x 86 = total of 274million consoles in that gen. Thats A LOT compared to other gens. Tbf 7th gen saw a lot of gems and classics in the entire gaming industry. The memories those games gave are for a lifetime

@@RAKUNTU idk I always feel a deflated energy the year the next consoles release, whereas the last full year seems like the real last hurrah. 2012 seemed like the last party of that generation to me, everyone knew the next ones were coming, but it was the last year they got full uncomprimised support. Plus idk, I see 2013 as the real start of the next generations energy instead of the end of the previous ones. I mean gta v released that year and it’s still one of the most played games to this day (but my cup of tea but still)
Certain games on both systems still feel futuristic to me. For example, God of War 3 still looks absolutely insane. The PS4 remaster that came out in 2015, looks almost identical to it's ps3 version that came out in 2009. I remember Xplay gushing over how insane it was. Halo 2 on the original xbox still blows me away with how massive certain areas can be when it just lets you look at the environment around you.

I began in 1988 to play console games. these 2 consoles still blow my mind. better than the new ones right now. the PS3's Cell Processor Is More Powerful Than many current Intel CPUs (2019) and the XBOX 360 E version. that I have is still a super machine (even better than play 3 in games and GPU ). new consoles have NORMAL PC processors....... thats not good.. they have more GPU teraflops., RAM... but they melt of heat....... you dont need 16 GB of RAM to make a game..
TheGuy I have a wii and the reason it is popular as it was made for the “casual” gamer. The Wii’s games had little to no skill needed to play. (Apart from links crossbow training geez)

For me, this was the best video game generation of them all. The Xbox 360 was such a ridiculously good console and probably sits as the one I have the fondest memories of owning and playing with. The sheer amount of amazing games and new IPs released across both systems just seems to out do any other gen I can think of. I still have an original 60GB backwards compatible PS3. Plan to keep it safe and hopefully working for years to come.
@@arycorvette884 ehh the Xbox 360 was still more popular during their respective lifecycle’s. The only reason the ps3 ended up selling more was because when the Ps4 launched Sony heavily throttled the price of the ps3 to get rid of them. Up until then the Xbox 360 sold more.
@@arycorvette884it only did as well as it did because PS3 was riding off the coattails of the PS2 success. The PS3 was overpriced from the start and it was an ass console. Fast forward to present day the PS5 is trying to ride the coattails of the PS4 and failing. Console sales aren't going to be sustainable for a gaming company soon. Digital and mobile along with cloud gaming are slowly taking over.

@@shadowguardian3612 Firstly, your older games were also just as, if not more buggy due to smaller QA departments. Y'all didn't have the internet in such force to pick apart every bug that happened. You'd also find many games that weren't completed on release either. Look at the PS3 when it first launched and look how multiplat games had way more framerate and graphical problems. Look at the countless Movie Licenced games that were trash and aren't released now. Secondly, it was the 7th gen had introduced and extra emphasised multiplayer games. To the point publishers forced games made from 2008 onwards to have multiplayer modes attached even when they hurt the core experiences. At least now Multiplayer games are thriving and better than ever.

Ironic I got my Xbox 360 in the end of 2016. The time when it was dying. But my Dad was so strict he said I will not get any console until I will "Old enough" Got my first cell phone in 2018 and first smartphone in 2019 because I was then "Old enough". I think not giving me cellphone was a very nice move because I never cared about it. But a console....It was my dream to play modern games. And I used to cry every night for X box. I remember those days. And in The end of 2016 when My dad finally bought us one it was a "Dream come true". I never felt so much happy when I touched my X box for the first time.
Feels weird knowing that 7th gen will soon be two generations ago. I remember getting a Xbox 360 and Halo 3 back in 2007, feels like it was just yesterday.
I remember going into theater mode before finishing the first level and being blown away at the lighting, sharpness of the 3d models and the reflection on MCs gold visor. I even thought it was awesome how real it looked when plants would move around the player and npcs when they brush into them. I had a huge smile on my face and spent about 2 hours in theater mode just admiring the leap in graphics, I felt like I had the best gaming system of all time. Hard to believe that was 13 years ago...
As impressive as that sales figure is, I think the main reason it sold so well was because it was also a DVD player, so essentially a lot of people got a cheaper DVD player that could also play games. Looking at prices back in 2000, that's a crazy good deal for a market that was shifting more and more to DVD players. I remember my family watching a lot of movies together on my brother's PS2 and for a lot of people it was their first DVD player. The fact that Sony developed it and made the DVD function easy to use was a nice bonus.
The Xbox 360 had twice the ram and vram , the Xbox was meant to be played on , the ps3 was still a powerhouse but the blu ray feature was more convenient
@@fawkkyutuu8851 I was gonna say the same, the jump from SNES and Sega Genesis to N64, PS1, & Dreamcast felt like a bigger graphical leap but the 360, PS3, and Wii generation had a greater impact and influence.

Yeah DVD was a shit format on console even back then at the time, developers had to try and cram data into such small capacity. Where as the the future proof PS3 with its blue ray could store way more data on a disc. This resulted in way better looking games and performance, with restraints due to weak hardware like 360. Although the PS3 CPU was a problem for lazy developers.
Whether ur an xbox or PS fan, I'm just glad we have 2 giant console makers, constantly pushing themselves to create the best product, which ultimately, results in us, the consumers, being the real winners
As weird as it is, I miss it. The toxicity was fun tbh; somebody would talk some mad shit to you, so you talk shit back, and you keep going until you or your opponent challenges the other to a 1v1 in an FPS game of choice (usually CoD: MW2 on the map Rust but sometimes it was Halo 3 or eventually Halo Reach), and the winner takes his pride while the loser shuts up. It was fun. It was super social, I met some great friends online because of it and I hope they're all doing great. For every squeaker, shit talker, and generally douche-y person there was somebody who was really chill. I woke up one morning, there was a snowstorm so I didn't have school, and I hopped on Halo Reach to discover one of my online friends also had no school because of the snow. So we played Halo the whole morning and then CoD Zombies in the afternoon. God I miss it sometimes.

A lot of great gaming culture came out of toxicity, but honestly the toxicity was just the competitive spirit being induced into all playing. And that's when you know your playing great quality games.

I will NEVER forget my 60GB PS3. Getting it with Assassin's Creed and Oblivion was the best Christmas of my life. I turned down dates because of her, and it has a special place in my heart. I truly do not regret a single second of gaming I had with her. Everything felt magical and simple. Getting with my friends, talking about the new releases. Man. I'm so glad I was able to experience it.
Honestly full props to Steve Ballmer for going full stop on the warranty. It’s not something you see in modern day life with companies trying to play off as much as they can. Even over a decade later scored a few points with myself.

I’m 26 too, and man those years were something else. From 06 being the very first time I laid my eyes on a PS3. I knew I wanted one from the very beginning. Got a 360 first though since it was cheaper back in 08. Then in 09 the time came, got my PS3 slim and it was over from there on. Great years, great games and great memories made during that gen, and I miss it dearly

I bought a ps3 in 08. I stuck with sony and PlayStation the whole time. Most of my friends had 360's because it was cheaper. I knew 3rd party games looked better and played better. I wanted to play the Xbox exclusives like halo 3 and gears. But I stuck with sony. When the ps4 was announced I was so excited that Sony seemed to be doing things right again. This current generation has been amazing to me as a life long PlayStation gamer since the 90's. One thing I want the ps5 to do is to put my ps4 disc inside of it and have it play it. If it can do that, Sony will win once again.
Ps1, OG Xbox and PS3, I´m skipping the current gen as for now, and yes, i was awesome growing up with the PS1 (i´m 27) and trying something new with the Xbox, as for the Ps3, it´s basically my childhood controller with modern (ish) games, it´s good
Now PlayStation got comfortable with the success of the PS4 and Xbox basically pulled a pro gamer move no pun intended and outsold them on their home turf of Japan if not for a bit although the PS5 is good the Xbox series s is easier to get and the x is a beast of it's own

History repeats, ever since OG Xbox there was a month the Xbox outsold PlayStation, but there was weeks where in Japan Xbox literally didn't sell more than 200 units. It's like how the 360 had a year lead of the ps3, and still sold less in the very end. Early leads, or momentary leads don't really mean much.
I nostalgia-ed so hard on this Documentary, and I agree. the 7th Gen was the best generation to date. we took a huge leap in gaming from 480p, 4:3 ratio single player to 720p/1080i, 16:9 multiplayer online. I don't think we will experience a better generation in gaming for a long time.
@@NinFever yeah im pretty sure the 6th generation also had this too. The PS2 & OG Xbox were both capable of playing a few games in 1080i (as well as 720p for the most part) while also being in 60fps. They also,along with the gamecube, were capable of playing a few games in 16:9 aspect ratio too (F-zero GX for example). The 7th gen didn't invent it nor start it but it did make 1080p,60fps, and 16:9 the norm for that gen.
@@NinFever if the hdmi format was made MUCH earlier (before the release of the 6th gen) the Ps2 & Xbox would've utilized it to its fullest potential, but they both ended up with component which is still a great format although hdmi was the one that really set the standard for modern inputs.
And as for online gaming the OG Xbox was where Xbox live was taking off to a good start (even more popular in the 360 era), the PS2 with its broadband (also more popular in the PS3 era), the gamecube also had online but was lacking in comparison to the wii era, and finally the Sega Dreamcast. Seganet was quite ahead of its time (having dlc for games but it was fair and free, having a service before XBL and PSN, and also having accessories for its online gaming such as:headset,mic, webcam,etc.) And its a shame it was discontinued in less than 3 years in the US. Japan was lucky it was around till 2007 (damnit 😂). So yeah my point is the 7th gen imo didn't really do anything other than standardize the innovations the 5th and 6th gen consoles. That's about it.
In the end, I could say that both Sony and Microsoft did pretty well in this console generation. Microsoft came out strong, hit a few roadblocks here and there but was able to recover. Sony had a rough start but was able to build up momentum and work their way to the top. Although Nintendo won in their own way in my opinion Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo were all winners.
So wild that the PS3 seemed like such a disaster and Microsoft had a 6.5 million unit head start, but PS3 still sold more units by the end of the generation.
Dylan Morrow you cant say a console is better. Ps3 has free online, different exclusives, etc 360 was most likely more powerful, different exclusives,etc They are different and it depends which one you want
@@hchickenz1138 PS3 was undeniably more powerful than 360, just harder to develop for. That's why PS3 was able to overtake the 360 at the end of the generation because developers got a much better handle on the PS3 by then and were able to take full advantage of the cell processor. Still though, back in 2005-2008 the 360 was the console to play on, I had the ps3 as a kid and was very jealous of my friends playing online together on Halo 3.

Most of the Xbox 360’s issues can be summed up to Microsoft rushing the launch. Had the console been delayed and if the issues were addressed with this extra time, the Xbox 360 would have maintained its sales lead against the PS3.
Yea if Xbox 360 was released in 2006 a few months before the PS3, they probably could've stayed in the lead. PlayStation 3 I don't think would've surpassed the 360 in the end had it not had a massive failure rate. Though the yellow light of death was a massive problem for Sony as well. But I think the red light of death of the 360 was worse.
PS1: Sony's first breakout hit into the gaming world and what put them on the map. PS2: Sony's first undeniable over night victory that was so amazing that it put another big competitor out of the console race PS3: Sony's ambitious but flawed approach that shot themselves in the foot out of the gate, and would spend many years climbing back to the top. PS4: Easily as beloved as the PS2. Had an amazing start and never dropped the momentum. Sony was the undisputed championship this time. PS5: Who knows? We shall see. PSP: Amazing handheld that boasted more power than it's competition but could never quite see the same level of success. PS Vita: An amazing handheld that had a rocky start and was quickly abandoned by Sony. Kept alive by 3rd party and indie developers. Yet still managed to be the little handheld that could. Imagine if Sony had actually kept trying with it. Could have been as successful as it's predecessor if not more so.
@Craig Sheppard Maybe it was, I wouldn't know since I owned a PS2 and only played the original Xbox once or twice at a friend's house. Regardless though the PS2 was undeniably more popular than it's competition, and is even cited as a reason for Sega dropping out of the console business.
@@v_35hr nope, google it. PS3 was so powerful, it was used by the military to run Linux. It just had an advance architecture. 360 had horrendously abysmal hardware but Microsoft did a better job optimising the games.

most xbox gamers didn't like it when MS tried to pull the same trick. That E3 was one of the worst ever, I remember the xbox forums after that, they were on fire! MS had to do so much back tracking and I still don't think they really fully made up for it until Phil came along and started switching stuff up
A couple of things not mentioned in this video is that the PS2 emulation was an issue financially from the off for Sony as the US launch console had hardware emulation, but by the time it was released in Europe, it now had software based emulation and the hardware was removed. Also, as stated in the video, the PS3 was a lot harder to develop for which often made ports look weaker than their 360 counterparts, but Lucasarts made a big decision to change the way they developed multi platform games. Instead of the usual develop for 360 and then port to PS3, Lucasarts decided that if you developed for PS3 first then port to 360 that it was much easier to do, and also the PS3 version actually ended up being just as good as the PS3 version. No idea if any other developers went that route, but Lucasarts defo worked that one out.
@@princegroove I havent played videogames since PS2 and Wii. In 2017 I bought a PS3. So far I ve finished Deadpool, God Of War all of them, Tekken 6, Burnout Paradise , GTA 4 etc. I just finished Red Dead Redemption, and now I started GTA V (thats gonna take me a while). I don't regret a second of gaming on them, and I dont care if there are games out there with 16k and 200 fps. If you don't play online, there's not much reason to buy a PS4.
@@nikoskabbadias I agree with you that the PS3 has an amazing library and you can have a lot of fun with it, but just because you can have fun without a PS4, doesn't mean there's no reason to get one. Some of the greatest games have been released on the new generation, specifically on the PS4. Not saying it's dumb sticking with the PS3. I stuck with my 360 from 2013 till 2017 and had an incredible time with all the games I've wanted to play for such a long time and just yesterday I've started a new GTA IV campaign. Just saying, when you're ready to move on, you'll probably fall in love with the new/current generation. By the way! I can wholeheartedly recommend The Last of Us, Life is Strange, FarCry3 and Assassins' Creed 3. But first have fun with GTA V. ^-^ EDIT: Especially The Last of us and Life is Strange! My faves of all time.
The PS3 was such an unique system in the history of video games, Somehow instead of becoming a distant 3rd or second like every other system that got outsold by a competitor it was able to stay relevant in sales the whole generation despite all the mistakes that were made on the system!
@@JudeTheTH-camPoopersubscribe I got ps4 in 2015 and Xbox one in 2017 it's not to expensive to have both $400for PlayStation and $300 au for xbox but I'm going for pc instead of next gen console though pcs are way better and upgradable I just have to keep saving cause a gaming pc with simular specs is $1500-1600 au so I see why people get consoles as a cheaper platform.

i bought the xbox360 in early 2006 and thought it was a great battle between it and ps3 but lets not kid ourselves ,anyone over the age of 35 knows that sega megadrive vs snes was the greatest rivalry gaming will ever see period,kids literally fought in the playground over it....great times
Agreed! I was, and still am a major Sega fanboy, and always sided with the Sega consoles, but this 360 vs ps3 era was a close second to that rivalry. Miss those times. Microsoft seemed like they lost touch with their hardcore gamers late in that lifecycle, and it bled through this gen. I prefer xbox , but the ps4 has spanked them this gen
24yrs here, and really you shouldn't underestimate how much console preference divided teens during those years. Intense distaste and disrespect for the other home front from both parties was not unlike sports team rivalries. Also noteworthy is that I'm pretty sure the classic rivalry had their biggest stage in the USA. Since it was before the days of the internet and the SEGA marketing was almost entirely based in the states, the EU and other continents knew of the rivalry existing but definitely participated way less compared to the Gen7 wars.

i think 3DS was a much greater comeback and it was basically in the same-ish generation. it was DOA but some powerful white mage cast the best resurrection spell ever on it.

People forget how big the Xbox 360 was over PlayStation. Halo 3 had my extended family and I playing against each other a few times a week. At least this new generation of series x and ps5 will probably be the most interesting thing since the 360/PS3 era.

I was thinking of making a comment like this because you're absolutely right. Microsoft and Sony are basically modern takes on the first console wars between Sega and Nintendo with their best consoles being modern images of each other (Genesis is 360 and SNES is PS3). For me, it goes one step further into that. All of these consoles are great, but I liked the Sega Genesis more than the SNES and the 360 more than the PS3 which basically means I've always sided with the consoles/companies that challenged kings and let those kings know that they were no pushovers. Certain games on both systems still feel futuristic to me. For example, God of War 3 still looks absolutely insane. The PS4 remaster that came out in 2015, looks almost identical to it's ps3 version that came out in 2009. I remember Xplay gushing over how insane it was. Halo 2 on the original xbox still blows me away with how massive certain areas can be when it just lets you look at the environment around you.
Just think when we are looking back at the launch of the ps5 and series X saying the same thing!

I began in 1988 to play console games. these 2 consoles still blow my mind. better than the new ones right now. the PS3's Cell Processor Is More Powerful Than many current Intel CPUs (2019) and the XBOX 360 E version. that I have is still a super machine (even better than play 3 in games and GPU ). new consoles have NORMAL PC processors....... thats not good.. they have more GPU teraflops., RAM... but they melt of heat....... you dont need 16 GB of RAM to make a game..

For me, this was the best video game generation of them all. The Xbox 360 was such a ridiculously good console and probably sits as the one I have the fondest memories of owning and playing with. The sheer amount of amazing games and new IPs released across both systems just seems to out do any other gen I can think of. I still have an original 60GB backwards compatible PS3. Plan to keep it safe and hopefully working for years to come.

Firstly, your older games were also just as, if not more buggy due to smaller QA departments. Y'all didn't have the internet in such force to pick apart every bug that happened. You'd also find many games that weren't completed on release either.
Look at the PS3 when it first launched and look how multiplat games had way more framerate and graphical problems. Look at the countless Movie Licenced games that were trash and aren't released now.
Secondly, it was the 7th gen had introduced and extra emphasised multiplayer games. To the point publishers forced games made from 2008 onwards to have multiplayer modes attached even when they hurt the core experiences. At least now Multiplayer games are thriving and better than ever.

Ironic I got my Xbox 360 in the end of 2016. The time when it was dying. But my Dad was so strict he said I will not get any console until I will "Old enough" Got my first cell phone in 2018 and first smartphone in 2019 because I was then "Old enough". I think not giving me cellphone was a very nice move because I never cared about it. But a console....It was my dream to play modern games. And I used to cry every night for X box. I remember those days. And in The end of 2016 when My dad finally bought us one it was a "Dream come true". I never felt so much happy when I touched my X box for the first time.

Feels weird knowing that 7th gen will soon be two generations ago. I remember getting a Xbox 360 and Halo 3 back in 2007, feels like it was just yesterday.
I remember going into theater mode before finishing the first level and being blown away at the lighting, sharpness of the 3d models and the reflection on MCs gold visor. I even thought it was awesome how real it looked when plants would move around the player and npcs when they brush into them. I had a huge smile on my face and spent about 2 hours in theater mode just admiring the leap in graphics, I felt like I had the best gaming system of all time. Hard to believe that was 13 years ago...

As impressive as that sales figure is, I think the main reason it sold so well was because it was also a DVD player, so essentially a lot of people got a cheaper DVD player that could also play games. Looking at prices back in 2000, that's a crazy good deal for a market that was shifting more and more to DVD players. I remember my family watching a lot of movies together on my brother's PS2 and for a lot of people it was their first DVD player. The fact that Sony developed it and made the DVD function easy to use was a nice bonus.

HD/DVD players won't even work on 360 anymore.
Seeing as how streaming was kicking in, wouldn't have made any difference.
Yeah DVD was a shit format on console even back then at the time, developers had to try and cram data into such small capacity. Where as the the future proof PS3 with its blue ray could store way more data on a disc. This resulted in way better looking games and performance, with restraints due to weak hardware like 360. Although the PS3 CPU was a problem for lazy developers.

As weird as it is, I miss it. The toxicity was fun tbh; somebody would talk some mad shit to you, so you talk shit back, and you keep going until you or your opponent challenges the other to a 1v1 in an FPS game of choice (usually CoD: MW2 on the map Rust but sometimes it was Halo 3 or eventually Halo Reach), and the winner takes his pride while the loser shuts up. It was fun. It was super social, I met some great friends online because of it and I hope they're all doing great. For every squeaker, shit talker, and generally douche-y person there was somebody who was really chill. I woke up one morning, there was a snowstorm so I didn't have school, and I hopped on Halo Reach to discover one of my online friends also had no school because of the snow. So we played Halo the whole morning and then CoD Zombies in the afternoon. God I miss it sometimes.

I’m 26 too, and man those years were something else. From 06 being the very first time I laid my eyes on a PS3. I knew I wanted one from the very beginning. Got a 360 first though since it was cheaper back in 08. Then in 09 the time came, got my PS3 slim and it was over from there on. Great years, great games and great memories made during that gen, and I miss it dearly

I bought a ps3 in 08. I stuck with sony and PlayStation the whole time. Most of my friends had 360's because it was cheaper. I knew 3rd party games looked better and played better. I wanted to play the Xbox exclusives like halo 3 and gears. But I stuck with sony. When the ps4 was announced I was so excited that Sony seemed to be doing things right again. This current generation has been amazing to me as a life long PlayStation gamer since the 90's. One thing I want the ps5 to do is to put my ps4 disc inside of it and have it play it. If it can do that, Sony will win once again.

History repeats, ever since OG Xbox there was a month the Xbox outsold PlayStation, but there was weeks where in Japan Xbox literally didn't sell more than 200 units. I nostalgia-ed so hard on this Documentary, and I agree. the 7th Gen was the best generation to date. we took a huge leap in gaming from 480p, 4:3 ratio single player to 720p/1080i, 16:9 multiplayer online. I don't think we will experience a better generation in gaming for a long time.

@@NinFever yeah im pretty sure the 6th generation also had this too. The PS2 & OG Xbox were both capable of playing a few games in 1080i (as well as 720p for the most part) while also being in 60fps. They also,along with the gamecube, were capable of playing a few games in 16:9 aspect ratio too (F-zero GX for example). The 7th gen didn't invent it nor start it but it did make 1080p,60fps, and 16:9 the norm for that gen.
@@NinFever if the hdmi format was made MUCH earlier (before the release of the 6th gen) the Ps2 & Xbox would've utilized it to its fullest potential, but they both ended up with component which is still a great format although hdmi was the one that really set the standard for modern inputs.
And as for online gaming the OG Xbox was where Xbox live was taking off to a good start (even more popular in the 360 era), the PS2 with its broadband (also more popular in the PS3 era), the gamecube also had online but was lacking in comparison to the wii era, and finally the Sega Dreamcast. Seganet was quite ahead of its time (having dlc for games but it was fair and free, having a service before XBL and PSN, and also having accessories for its online gaming such as:headset,mic, webcam,etc.) And its a shame it was discontinued in less than 3 years in the US. Japan was lucky it was around till 2007 (damnit 😂). So yeah my point is the 7th gen imo didn't really do anything other than standardize the innovations the 5th and 6th gen consoles. That's about it.

In the end, I could say that both Sony and Microsoft did pretty well in this console generation. Microsoft came out strong, hit a few roadblocks here and there but was able to recover. Sony had a rough start but was able to build up momentum and work their way to the top. Although Nintendo won in their own way in my opinion Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo were all winners.

@@hchickenz1138 PS3 was undeniably more powerful than 360, just harder to develop for. That's why PS3 was able to overtake the 360 at the end of the generation because developers got a much better handle on the PS3 by then and were able to take full advantage of the cell processor.
Still though, back in 2005-2008 the 360 was the console to play on, I had the ps3 as a kid and was very jealous of my friends playing online together on Halo 3.

Most of the Xbox 360’s issues can be summed up to Microsoft rushing the launch. Had the console been delayed and if the issues were addressed with this extra time, the Xbox 360 would have maintained its sales lead against the PS3.
Yea if Xbox 360 was released in 2006 a few months before the PS3, they probably could've stayed in the lead. PlayStation 3 I don't think would've surpassed the 360 in the end had it not had a massive failure rate. Though the yellow light of death was a massive problem for Sony as well. But I think the red light of death of the 360 was worse.
PS1: Sony's first breakout hit into the gaming world and what put them on the map.
PS2: Sony's first undeniable over night victory that was so amazing that it put another big competitor out of the console race
PS3: Sony's ambitious but flawed approach that shot themselves in the foot out of the gate, and would spend many years climbing back to the top.
PS4: Easily as beloved as the PS2. Had an amazing start and never dropped the momentum. Sony was the undisputed championship this time.
PS5: Who knows? We shall see.
PSP: Amazing handheld that boasted more power than it's competition but could never quite see the same level of success.
PS Vita: An amazing handheld that had a rocky start and was quickly abandoned by Sony. Kept alive by 3rd party and indie developers. Yet still managed to be the little handheld that could. Imagine if Sony had actually kept trying with it. Could have been as successful as it's predecessor if not more so.

most xbox gamers didn't like it when MS tried to pull the same trick. That E3 was one of the worst ever, I remember the xbox forums after that, they were on fire! MS had to do so much back tracking and I still don't think they really fully made up for it until Phil came along and started switching stuff up
A couple of things not mentioned in this video is that the PS2 emulation was an issue financially from the off for Sony as the US launch console had hardware emulation, but by the time it was released in Europe, it now had software based emulation and the hardware was removed.
Also, as stated in the video, the PS3 was a lot harder to develop for which often made ports look weaker than their 360 counterparts, but Lucasarts made a big decision to change the way they developed multi platform games. Instead of the usual develop for 360 and then port to PS3, Lucasarts decided that if you developed for PS3 first then port to 360 that it was much easier to do, and also the PS3 version actually ended up being just as good as the PS3 version. No idea if any other developers went that route, but Lucasarts defo worked that one out.
I said I will buy a PS4 when I run out of amazing PS3 games to play.

@@princegroove I havent played videogames since PS2 and Wii. In 2017 I bought a PS3. So far I ve finished Deadpool, God Of War all of them, Tekken 6, Burnout Paradise , GTA 4 etc. I just finished Red Dead Redemption, and now I started GTA V (thats gonna take me a while).
I don't regret a second of gaming on them, and I dont care if there are games out there with 16k and 200 fps.
If you don't play online, there's not much reason to buy a PS4.

@@nikoskabbadias I agree with you that the PS3 has an amazing library and you can have a lot of fun with it, but just because you can have fun without a PS4, doesn't mean there's no reason to get one. Some of the greatest games have been released on the new generation, specifically on the PS4. Not saying it's dumb sticking with the PS3. I stuck with my 360 from 2013 till 2017 and had an incredible time with all the games I've wanted to play for such a long time and just yesterday I've started a new GTA IV campaign. Just saying, when you're ready to move on, you'll probably fall in love with the new/current generation. By the way! I can wholeheartedly recommend The Last of Us, Life is Strange, FarCry3 and Assassins' Creed 3. But first have fun with GTA V. ^-^

Agreed! I was, and still am a major Sega fanboy, and always sided with the Sega consoles, but this 360 vs ps3 era was a close second to that rivalry. Miss those times. Microsoft seemed like they lost touch with their hardcore gamers late in that lifecycle, and it bled through this gen. I prefer xbox , but the ps4 has spanked them this gen
24yrs here, and really you shouldn't underestimate how much console preference divided teens during those years. Intense distaste and disrespect for the other home front from both parties was not unlike sports team rivalries.
Also noteworthy is that I'm pretty sure the classic rivalry had their biggest stage in the USA. Since it was before the days of the internet and the SEGA marketing was almost entirely based in the states, the EU and other continents knew of the rivalry existing but definitely participated way less compared to the Gen7 wars.

i think 3DS was a much greater comeback and it was basically in the same-ish generation. it was DOA but some powerful white mage cast the best resurrection spell ever on it.

Game companies don't just join others for no reason. The reason Xbox had cod exclusivity (like dlc earlier than PS3) because they had the better console Activision, infinity ward, tryarch all of them would make more money partnering with Microsoft.
Just like now PS4 has cod's exclusivity because PS4 was the better console coming out than xbone. Only difference is Xbox had the good years of cod.
PS3 was harder to code unlike the 360. Graphics both were pretty much the same but Xbox had better lighting in games.
PS3 faster CPU slower GPU. Xbox slower CPU faster GPU
Having the faster GPU gave Xbox the slight edge in graphics.

2010 was my favorite year of the PS3 and that was when my favorite LP album came out. ATS. Never heard an album like that since.
There is never going to be another console generation like this one. There isn’t anything they could do to recreate the excitement around these consoles and the the explosion in online gaming that it brought

You know, it's amazing how much these two consoles parallel the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. The consoles of the first console war.
Xbox 360 (Sega Genesis):
1.Both consoles were a legitimate threat to the industry leader
2.Both consoles released earlier
3.Both console's predecessors were a relatively modest success, but then these consoles cemented their companies as a legitimate competitor
4.Both consoles were a huge success in North America, yet flopped in Japan
5.Both console's successors failed to live up sales-wise
PS3 (Super Nintendo):
1.Both consoles came from the industry leader
2.Both consoles had better hardware
3.Both consoles failed to outsell their predecessor
4.Both console's predecessors were the best selling consoles of all time
5.Both consoles ultimately did outsell their main competitor
I was thinking of making a comment like this because you're absolutely right. Microsoft and Sony are basically modern takes on the first console wars between Sega and Nintendo with their best consoles being modern images of each other (Genesis is 360 and SNES is PS3). For me, it goes one step further into that. All of these consoles are great, but I liked the Sega Genesis more than the SNES and the 360 more than the PS3 which basically means I've always sided with the consoles/companies that challenged kings and let those kings know that they were no pushovers. Does that make me a rebel? lol :P
