    For over 20 years the portable video game market was dominated entirely by Nintendo, with almost no real competition in sight. That is, until Sony releases the powerhouse PlayStation and PlayStation 2. Accumulating massive market share, and then creating their own handheld; the PSP. We take a deep dive into the history of PSP. From its initial hype and release, to its steady decline with piracy and the DS leading the way.

    Hi everyone! I know there’s been a lot of crazy PlayStation news going on these past few days, and we’ll definitely discuss everything this Friday but for now I finally have another documentary for you all. Hope you enjoy it! I still have my launch PSP-1000 and doing this video has really made me want to start collecting more for it, so dead serious question what are some of your favorite games and what should I try and pick up?
    And thank you all so much for the support recently. You guys are the wind beneath my wings.

      Less things to push & move on a controller the better. Never liked controllers after the 16 bit era ended. In the arcades, everything was straight, joystick in the middle, 3 buttons to the right of it, or similiar layouts like that, now you got 2 sticks, buttons here, there, on top, underneath, to the side, wTF!

    This device was capable of wifi, internet browsing, taking pictures, gps, running a boatload of custom homebrew software (before anyone knew what "apps" were), playing music, watching both legit and pirated movies, and even being a TV remote. It had amazing graphics and a massive screen for the time. And it cost about half of what the original iPhone cost three years before it came out. It's so sad that Sony's locked down stock software never fully allowed people to unlock its full potential.

    • @marcomolinari94
      @marcomolinari94 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      well, we also have to say that it did most of these things... badly :( ok, PS Vita was even worse (compared to other devices of that era)...i mean, in 2011 there was iPhone 4s and -more importantly- Samsung Galaxy S2 available in the world market; S2 was already decent in "3D gaming" (for the 2011 standard) and did everything else (GPS, web browsing, photos etc) much much better than PS Vita*, making the existance of the second Playstation Portable completely useless (smartphone gaming started in those years); PSP was like PS Vita in terms of non-gaming-features (quantity, not quality), but it was just lucky that smartphones were still unripe/premature in 2004-2008
      *fun fact: Vita in italian means LIFE.
      it's funny to rename that way a console that was early considered dead :(

Piracy was rampant by 2008, and most people I knew that had PSPs had stopped buying games by 2008 and had hacked PSPs running OE and shortly after, M33 firmwares. Hell, I knew people that hadnt had a portable since the Game Boy and they bought it because it was that simple to hack them and get free games. That's where half the units sold came from in my opinion. People buying to hack and get free games.

    • @JinteiModding
      @JinteiModding 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@thanos2399 yeah but mostly the Vita killed itself with games being bad ports or copies of existing PS3 games and here Is an example:
      Ridge Racer PSP, 2004: it's great, 60FPS at all time, graphics look really nice, menu songs and Menus in general are nice to look at, it's the perfect PSP launch title (also Ridge Racer 2 since it's the exact same game with a few more tracks and Cars and songs)
      Ridge Racer PS Vita, 2011: not great, graphics look downgraded from Ridge Racer 7 on the PS3, and there was so Little content locked behind DLCs. This Is not EA, its Namco, and for some reason they renamed some Cars (Soldat Raggio now known as Soldat Rauna) for some reason, and again, very Little content
      Also the PSP had almost perfect ports of PS2 games, Colin McRae Rally 2005, Midnight Club 3, ecc. Yeah some games might not run at a consistent 30/60FPS (especially CMR2005 and MC3 I mentioned) but they were still playable and fun to look at, they were basically PS2 games on the go, Nintendo took more than 10 years (literally) to make a portable device play SNES games. The PSP did It right at the start of it's Life
      And the Vita could have done the same, if It wasn't killed by low support, terrible games and nobody caring

      wall mob my point was back in that time is was hard to believe that a device that can play games,listen to music,watch videos and tv shows and browse the web would have software that can exceed software as far as memory capacity and that being a console that had better hardware than the PS2 and probably OG Xbox. The only fault with Nintendo and even know a days they still don’t know how big of impact online gaming is like with the Switch without proper voice chat and dedicated servers like OG Xbox and PS2 had back in the day. They just don’t know their competition at all.
