      @@liubei3058 true , and also.. the same way the early us made a 'pirate' a governor or something like that ....there is a point where a functional government even if run by elites understand either they admit they cant win and offer all the opponent wants and more just to become part of the 'civilian' population of their polity , or they lose the last chance to stop a new nation from starting to grow at their expense ,one that in the mathematics of sociology might prove more tenacious and more appealing to the masses then the current proclaimed government
      since for example this song , all those pirates hade to come from somewhere and if the pirate queen started to show they where not just capable to keep any upstarts away from 'their' protection villages ...but also start denying the supposed government of said nation the ability to even visit them well , citys are big sources of manpower and production but you be surprised how swiftly shortages can cripple those advantages if enough 'nodes' feeding them are cut , not to mention enough such 'nodes' claimed and its ripe for new urban hives & production centres to spring up

      Since the British were "humbled by defeat" and she was "one they couldn't win" to the Chinese government, and considering who writes the history books, it's hardly a surprise. VERY pleasant surprise to hear this song though, written because despite the best efforts of official historians to erase and memory-hole Cheng-Shi "legends of that Pirate Queen will never fade away."

      @@FusionAero Wait what? Like she is not an natonal hero in China? Becouse she sounds like a very bad-ass lady.
      Something like that crazy scotish guy named John Paul Jones, who was so insane and badass pirate that wrecked UK ships and towns on the british isles, he even in 1999 got an official pardon from a town he raided in 1778.

      @@FusionAero okay but the British part is totally ahistorical only one British warship was involved in any of this was HMS Mercury and even she might not have even been there. Pretty understandable since they were presently fighting two wars elsewhere both of which needed naval support

    I found this song almost a year ago im glad to see it come back it is an amazing song. Edited part (so out of curiosity i looked more into Zheng Yi and it really is interesting she was a strict ruler had rules setup and even registered stolen goods and cataloged them to prevent any from being stolen so every got an equal cut she knew how to rule and made sure that her prisoners women at least weren't treated like garbage and would execute anyone who would rape or abuse them.)

Had my step dad laughing the other night because i got drunk from drinking too much shine & put on y'alls playlist & started singing along to it fully immersing myself in the tale being told. I went full pirate that night & My step dad joined the fun lol.

    Great to hear a song about Cheng I Sao. Beautiful tribute, guys. A good resource on her is Laura Sook Duncombe's "Women Pirates," which (among other things) dispels a lot of the legends about her and focuses on the reality, which is no less exciting and which you guys nailed here.

    Battleship Potemkin crew were the most successful pirates. Where else have you seen a pirate pre- dreadnought pirate battleship, accompanied by a steamer destroyer. They didn't last long but became a legend in just 11 days. Then they went to port Constanze and abandoned the ship. None dared to oppose them, because the battleship Potemkin together with her escort destroyer were theoretically able to take down the whole Romanian navy.

    • @TheJollyRogers
      @TheJollyRogers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Who can say about THE most successful? However, she definitely was ONE of the most successful. Her entire fleet ruled the China Sea and it's coastline, and she was strong enough that, since they couldn't beat her, they had to negotiate an end to her piracy. Pretty bad-ass if you ask us!
