  • In this review, suitably attired, we travel to Scotland to test a wonderful 1993 Volkswagen Polo (Mark 2 Facelift) G40 and see how practical it is, what it is like to drive and what it is like to own. Be prepared for more in-jokes for fans of a certain long-running spy film franchise (as usual), references to Peter Serafinowicz's seminal spoof science series Look Around You, an incredible amount of nostalgia, seriously heavy steering, a rather uncomfortable driving position, ridiculous performance, a very spartan level of equipment, more trouble than usual with negotiating speed bumps, a slightly feeble Christmas message, some nice genuine BBS alloy wheels and small LED warning lights... Nothing untoward, then!
    As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

    Great video, I love that you're going into detail about different polos that are often overlooked , I own a 1988 saloon converted to a 1.4 16v and the fact it's so basic and light makes it more fun to drive

      Thanks ever so much indeed, Ed! I have reviewed a number of older cars on Tweed Jacket Reviews now, and only the Polo had the nostalgic factor for me, which made it very special. Yes, finding information about cars of this age for review is sometimes very difficult, and I definitely did not get everything right, but I did try to cover as much as possible. I find it interesting that so many Volkswagens of this age can accept engine swaps from newer models relatively easily, I am sure that yours is an absolute blast!

    Brilliant video Joseph, great camera work and editing too. Owning a car that brings back childhood memories is indeed very special - the family used to own a Mazda RX-8 about 12 years ago, and since they're so cheap now we've bought another. Even the smell inside takes me back!

      Thanks very much indeed, Yousuf! Yes, it is a fantastic little car, although I think that the driving position is a little bit too uncomfortable for me to properly consider one, sadly. Yes, you are right about the RX-8, I did wonder which one of your family owned the one in your review. They are criminally cheap, aren't they? I had a BA Mazda 323F as my second ever car, so would love to both that and an RX-8 too!

    Big respect to you. Reminiscencing for your dad. Rip. I owned a g40 for nearly 10 years. And I brought it from my father's inheritance money that I got. I was 7 when he passed. And got the car when I was 21. No one could beat me of the lights. Even the older guys in there cossies! Then some pricks. Petrol bombed mine and a few other cars in the area. I was devastated. Crying my eyes out. Two years passed. And now I own another one. 82k on the clock. In molested. In white. Great condition. Un faded and in torn. 2014 Audi S3 quattro could not believe how I left him in my rear view. F...ING love it. And great that it was your Xmas special.

      Thank you ever so much indeed for your kind comments, Graeme! This was the 30th in the series of Tweed Jacket Reviews, and was a particularly special one (as was the recent 1,000 Subscriber Special). Seeing the car and sitting inside it brought back so many early memories, especially from the 1980s and early 1990s. Funny how your father passed away when you were seven, as I was seven in 1990 as well. The G40 is a seriously quick car, as it doesn't weigh anything, does it? You must have been ever so upset about what happened to your first one, glad you were able to get your hands on another one, they aren't exactly common!

    My first car was a 1L fox facelift, then a GT followed by a G40 when I was 21. When I brought my G40 it was running at 180bph. That thing flew and shocked many high-performance cars with its acceleration. I would love to own one again, it was such an amazing car to drive and this video brings back so many memory.

      No problem at all, thank you very much indeed for your wonderful comment! It was a hugely nostalgic experience for me, even if I had never actually driven a Mark II Polo before, I have travelled in an awful lot of them. The brakes certainly were an experience and they are even worse on a pre-facelift car, of course... Well, I have been offered a big bumper Mark II Golf GTi 16v for review later in the year, so that should be fun too. Hello TweedJacket. Some other points that I noted from your video. I hope you don't mine me mentioning:
    11:19 IIRC only the saloons had a boot light - it was part of the rear light cluster and came on with the head or sidelights.
    12:41 All facelift cars got full length doorcards. Even the fox (but on the fox it wasn't the best colour scheme!)
    13:23 There was a dealer fit electric window fit. Or you could retrofit it from a small window mk2 golf.
    15:25 The later facelifts had side impact bars.
    16:13 In the facelift, only GT, G40s and a few other models like Genesis got a rev counter. The more basic got a clock, or nothing like the CL and Fox respectively.
    16:33 Like other same era VWs the main beam is not an LED, but a bulb with a blue cap. On car's this age it might have blown, so worth checking as it's an MOT requirement.
    18:03 Again full length doorcards on the facelights
    18:30 Yes a very basic car. The genesis Polos had the bet equipment list as standard, but still basic compared to a modern car.
    Thanks for reviewing this car. I've owned one for years and I'd agree. Very basic, tough and reliable.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much indeed for your information! It is sometimes hard to find out specific details on the Internet for older cars like this, hence why there may be some mistakes in the review.
      Someone else mentioned about the dealer fit electric windows, otherwise I would not have known about them... I imagine the cars with side impact bars were not very common as the Mark III Polo came out in 1994. The door cards were significantly better than I remembered, I did look up what the 1980s Mark II C/CL Polo door cards looked like before I filmed the review just to make sure that I was right about them, and I was. I was also blessed to find a list of the trim levels in the right order with the Genesis at the top of the non-sporting models. I quite fancy a Genesis Polo Classic with electric windows now...
      Glad you enjoyed it, I was really, really honoured to be offered this car for review, they don't come along every day! I did a Jaguar E-Type the next month too, again something which was absolutely fantastic, although a very different prospect, of course....

  • @TheSausagematt
    @TheSausagematt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Decent review. Few thing's that might not be known about these in terms of spec;
    - You could get dealer fitted electric windows, which have VW/Audi stamped loom
    - There are 2 known G40's Mk2f that have an electric sunroof, VW/Audi stamped loom

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks ever so much indeed! It is hard to find accurate information about these older cars sometimes, and so I must have missed that. Knowing Volkswagen's current policy of still offering lots of options, mainly factory these days, but clearly more variety with dealer fit extras in the past too, I am not surprised that you could specify electric windows and an electric sunroof if you wanted them enough.

  • @MateyGuv
    @MateyGuv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Iv has three G40’s over the years and absolutely loved them. For the power these had they are absolutely amazing to drive and so eager to go quick, stopping them is always an event as the brakes are scary to say the least!! Nothing quite like the scream of the g-lader on full throttle 😊 I’d kick myself every time I sold one but I’m getting old now and at 6’3” tall there is no graceful way of getting in and out of them lol
    Just cause I’m sad and know this stuff the only options available on the UK G40’s were metallic paint, front fog lights, manual sunroof and 60/40 split rear seats. The interior fabric is called Le Man’s, I think 🤔

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the information and for watching the video! Yes, those brakes are terrible, aren't they, even on the post-facelift cars with the servo assistance.... The power in a car of this weight means that it is a bit difficult to control until you get used to it, but it was an awful lot of fun. I agree about the cramped interior and I am four inches shorter than you! From comments other people have made, there were some other dealer fit options, but it looks as if this car had a few of the factory ones from new. Love the Le Mans fabric! Well, I have about 35 episodes of Tweed Jacket Reviews on a playlist including a Ford Granada Mark II and a Jaguar E-Type if you fancy taking a look...

    • @MateyGuv
      @MateyGuv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lloyd Vehicle Consulting if I remember right the dealer fitted options for the G40 was rubber mats front and back, carpet mats front and back, mudflaps front and back, different steering wheels and alloys.
      As a special order a G40 Genesis (Yup, it was a tie in with the band Genesis 1992 we can’t dance European tour. If you search for it there are some very awkward promotional pictures of the car and the band lol! The Golf has a Bon Jovi Edition around the same time!!) Edition was available it had electric windows, ‘Genesis’ stereo system, half leatherette/genesis fabric seats, front fog lights, sunroof ‘Genesis’ decals on the bonnet and rear quarters, polished tail pipe and unique dark purple metallic paint. Only one Polo G40 Genesis Edition was made in RHD for the UK and was given away as a prize. I think it’s still on the road today 😁
      Iv been making my way through your other videos - keep up the good work 👏

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much indeed! Yes, I think that there was a standard Genesis trim level as that one off G40. It's very hard to find information about things like optional extras and specification levels on cars of this age these days.... I do remember the Golf Rolling Stones Special Edition from the mid 1990s as well, Volkswagen certainly had a lot of association with bands at the time, didn't they? Good review Joseph, I have worked on countless MK2 Polos and Golfs when I used to work for a VW/AUDI main dealer from 1989 to 93 in the Body shop. I can absolutely relate to you regarding the sad loss of your Father. I can attribute my love of Fords to my Father who passed his test at 17 but didn't have a car until he was about 30 an inherited Ford Anglia 105e in 1969. He only had 4 more cars after that all Fords before sadly passing away in 2007. He reasoned that although Fords were maybe not the best cars they were fairly easy to service and fix for minimal cost. He carried out all his own maintenance and certainly helped me with repairs on my Capri over the years. Regards from Andy.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Andy! Yes, it is probably a bit of my father's influence that I now own the Toledo, which is the closest modern equivalent to a Jetta after the Jetta went upmarket and then was finally discontinued from the UK market a couple of years ago before itself being withdrawn from sale in 2018. My father loved it, probably why he only spent six months without it before buying the Mk2 Polo as a second car. The Volvo was my mother's choice and a bit too upper middle class for him. It is at this time of year that we do often remember absent friends, isn't it? Yes, that pretty much sums up Fords and Vauxhalls of the era, I would say. Funny how you worked at a Volkswagen dealer in the early 1990s too! Must have been great having him there to help you with maintenance on the Capri.

    Always a car that I dismissed because it only had a 1.3 engine. Now I realise that it was quite a little pocket rocket.
    I remember a popular special edition of this Coupe model. I think it was the Boulevard and it came in a beautiful metallic green shade with extra skinny tyres. It did look dated alongside the Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio and the new Corsa.
    Very nostalgic though

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Yea definitely. I've recently had a mk1 yaris Sr, and I had nothing bad I can say about it, absolute brilliant car. I'd highly recommend picking up a t sport model. The top model of the yaris mk1. I think they are 110bhp from a 1.5litre engine The power to weight is brilliant. They are very reliable cars, my yaris reached 154,00 miles, until the exhaust manifold rotted out and couldn't get it apart to replace it 😂

      Yes, I have heard that those are surprisingly long lived. Plenty of first generation models still around, although the T Sport is rare. The 1.5 is unique to that trim level, as you say. Once again, good old corrosion seems to be getting the better of them now, doesn't it? Mind you, so many other Japanese designed cars of the era, regardless of whether they were built in European or Asian plants, are far, far worse for rust than one of these...

    I drive from Rotterdam to Düsseldorf with this model. But with a 1.0 engine and no power steering. The car was from a german friend of my. This was in 2010. Already back than 10 years ago i ask my friend: how can you drive this every day? This is not from this time! I like older cars. From the 90s. And some from the 80s. But this car drove like it was from the 60s...

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The journey must have been very slow and painful in a 1.0 Mark II facelift Polo! Lots of people did drive these every day. The G40 had particularly heavy steering due to the larger tyres. Oh yes, nostalgia is one of the main reasons why people buy old cars!

    To think the vauxhall corsa b was released around the same time as this, most people would of preferred the 1.4 gls 5dr corsa. Also is that the biggest quarter light in the history of automobiles on the polo!? oh and sorry hear about losing your father at a young age.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is right, the Vauxhall Corsa B and the Nissan Micra K11 were released around the same time as this Polo was made and they were a revelation in terms of the way they felt so much more modern. All seems quite old hat now, and the G40 is probably more desirable than the top versions of either of them. The quarterlight is indeed enormous, but that was the way things were on Volkswagens up until the early 1990s! I am sure that a lot of other people watching this can relate to losing someone and wishing that they were there at Christmas, this car brought back a lot of memories for me... @@lloydvehicleconsulting ok fair enough. I always thought they were mk3. My bro had a GT and a G40 and they were both 1991. Everyone I spoke to about them always referred to them as the mk3. My friend who worked in a VW specialist always called them mk3, he owned a mk2 polo as well as a mk2 golf GTI. @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eks_graffiti_art , it seems to be more common to refer to them as the Mark II facelift these days, although I understand why someone would call it a Mark III. It just brings it in line with the way other people refer to them around Europe. The facelift was a heavy one, but they were essentially still the same car underneath. The Mark III was very, very different indeed. Whether you prefer one or the other is down to individual preference, I suppose.
