    I know this was done some years ago but I love watching your videos and this 1 was 1 of the most informative I've seen yet. I'm 60 years old I've built a lot of engines and I didn't even know some of the things that you talked about in this video. Thanks for doing that

    Loved the 383 stroker videos! Have re-watched and taken notes several times now. Based on the video and with help I've decided to build a 383 stroker. Found a stock LS 350 engine with a whipple supercharger some goof just bolted on then rolled his truck. The block has been to the machine shop DC Racing Engines in Arvada, Co. Did a GREAT job and am looking forward to working more with them in the future will have them do the heads as well .So far the rotating assembly has been balanced. About to re- clean up the block and do the 1st round of clearances. It's going in a one of a kind modified 1990 K-1500 5 speed manual 2 door Chevy truck. Wish I could load a picture ! If Chevy built trucks that looked like mine after the modifications I've made they would sell a ton of them! It turns heads for sure! But sadly has no balls!-YET The supercharger was bolted to a stock manifold for a throttle body but the adapter plate and manifold design limits the air flow into the manifold. In fact it blocks about 1/2 of the flow. Stupid design. Can't seem to get any help from the Whipple website. They don't even bother to respond. The throttle body bolts at an angle on the back side of the supercharger instead of on top. The truck is daily driven and on pump gas. Trying to keep the compression ratio low but want as much power as I can get. Not sure what can be done without machining the manifold. And not sure what combination of cam/heads/manifold yet. Do Want a small base roller cam. Just concentrating on the rotating assembly for now. My buddy has vast mechanical knowledge and has been helping me with this but he is moving away so I'm not sure how I'm going to get this done. On a budget and have about $4000. into this project so far. Would really appreciate any advice! I'm not a mechanic although I've done a lot of shade tree work over the years. It's just my dream to make it happen. Something that kept me alive and moving forward after surviving a critical motorcycle accident. Just call me peg leg! And yes I still ride! And still kicking at 56! Guess some of us will never grow up! Anyway what fun is that? Getting old sucks! But having a supercharged 383 stroker would be awesome!     This was my engine he is rebuilding. Interesting to watch the process and all that goes into the build. Yes I did detonate the engine but not on purpose LOL. Costly mistake and I recommend letting a pro like Kerry guide you through your engine projects. Great videos! Can't wait to get the engine back and my Iroc back on the streets!

      Aaron Purtell it was built too high compression ratio and I wanted to run premium pump gas. Plus I don't drive it much in the summer and I think I had some bad gas too.

    So far vary impressed his discription of how balancing is done and works is spot on. Even did a good job of explaining the pin hieght and why it must change with a stroker motor.

    I recently finished my 383 stroker that I will be putting in my 1984 C20 that I bought brand new back in 84. I used all the components that you used and followed step by step your build. The engine is a BEAST! Do you have any idea what kind of horsepower it would be? I don't plan on having it put on a dyno. Just curious to what it may be. Thanks for the great videos and information about the build. Great learning experience with a great outcome.

    So i have never put a motor together but i have always wanted to. And now i have a job that pays good I'm ready. I'm starting with a summit 350 block .30 over and a scat all forged rotating assembly. For the heads I'm going with the promaxx 185 vortec heads hoping to get 9.6:1 compression ratio thanks for putting up these videos they really help me understand alot

    Thanks for this great important information. I was going to make my first engine build be a Striker 383, but after hearing all of this, I decided to keep it simple with just a 350. If my first 350 build works out great, I will probably make my second engine build be a Striker 383. I just have a vortex 350 engine that i wanted to rebuild and go carb and all. Thanks again

    Hey, I'm really enjoying watching your videos, I'm actually working on building an engine for my Jeep, myself. I do have one question since you're on the subject of balancing. I'm buying new pistons for my engine, and that's it (and of course new bearings and rings. I'm not changing any other part of my rotating assembly. I have a question that didn't concern me, until you took time to explain the balancing of the crank. If these new pistons I get are a different weight (which I'm sure they are) am I going to need to have my OE crank rebalanced, or can I just get away with balancing my new pistons?

    too funny, when you were building the Ford 289 you were wearing a Chevy hat, now your are working on a Chevy 383, you have a Ford hat on.

    Even though I have started watching one of my brother in laws build engines, and later I started. But watching you, is still very good. Especially for those who know nothing about rebuilding engines, and for those who do know. I really appreciate your videos!!! I am older now, and wish I lived near you. I have a 70 350 4-bolt main engine that needs to be rebuild. I am in no good shape to do so. And regarding balancing the engine, do the funny car racers have to do this? because they are all about very high revving engines.

    The bobweight for 90 degree V engine is made up of the weight of one piston, pin, rings, and the small end of one rod plus TWO big ends and bearings for one crank journal. Inline sixes and fours ( unless it's some weird up/down/up/down style crank ) do not require bobweights. V engines other than 90 degrees like a 60 degree V6 are a whole other story.

    you also have a shorter skirt on the piston. Therefore making the pistons not as aligned with the cylinder on the down stroke. This in turn makes the engine have a shorter life.

    This is a rediculisly GOOD series you could actually build a 383 at home step by step with these I can't believe this stuff is free it's not really fair to the other you Tube channels this one kinda makes all the other 383 build videos a waste of time

    Original 383s used a 400 crank, 400 pistons, and a 350 piston. How were they able to use the 350 piston? Because of the reduced length of the 400 rods, 5.565 vs. 5.7. I upgraded my Vortec motor to forged pistons but due to 'budget constraints' I couldn't have it balanced. It hasn't 'flown apart' yet. It's actually the best SBC I've ever had. Would it run smoother with a balance? Sure it would. If your budget has the funds, do it.

    So is it safe to say that if I was to purchase a complete rotating assembly and they say it is balanced, do I need to worry with balancing the parts?

      It just depends on who does the balancing some are good some not so good I don't risk it

    I understand the need to use bob weights on the v8s ...... but why do performance engine builders not need to use bob weights on straight 4 cylinder engines ?.... as they carry out the balancing and weighing of the pistons , rods etc just the same as the v8s

    if piston velocity changes the "weight" or force... what rpm do they use to balance the throws? in my head, if balanced at high rpm, it'd be heavier. but then if your engine runs at low rpm, the throw could pull the piston away EARLY on combustion/power stroke. JUST thoughts, plz don't hang me for it

    i have been watching your videos for a long time and want to build a Vortec chevy 5.7 with the roller cam and maybe make it a 383. Will a 400 crank work in one of the 1996-1999 350 blocks or will the stock cranks work? I watched our video the other day about the best heads for the 350 and the video for the best power producing cam, for this build what would you recommend? What manufacture would you recommend for new cast iron vortec heads, i have two motors and both set of heads were cracked. What manufacture would you recommend a master rebuild kit from?     I am wondering if the aftermarket "balanced" rotating assemblies are balanced reliably. Jegs, Summit, many others offer "balanced" 383 kits for more $$ than the unbalanced ones. Is the extra $$ worth the cost or are they unreliable?

    Got a good question for you.i have a Chevy 350 roller block.im making it into a 383 stroker.i need an externally balance flexplate.nobody can give me an answer .I called tci and they told me they only make one for a lt1 motor.my question is can I use a lt1 flexplate on my SBC?

    ive always herd that you use a 6 inch connecting rod with a 3.75 stroke, is the piston used for this set up shorter than the one you have in this video or is the 6 inch rod not right?

    Hi I have a question and It might be a stupid question at best. I pulled a tpi 350 from a 87 GTA trans am. Now I want to turn it to a 383 stroker now here is the stupid question if I do so would I be able to reuse the heads and the tune Port injection intake and manifold??? It also is a to bold main. Also when motor was pulled and at closer view I noticed 3 out of 5 main caps were cracked or had hair line cracks what would cause that to happen? Other than that the block is fine Cylinders have the normal wear thought id ask before I took it to a Machine shop

    Hey I just bought a 383 - complete engine - assembled. I'll probably do a tear down to find out [for sure] what's in it. I already know the cam "blows". It DOES have vortec heads, but different numbers. One is an 062 and the other is a 906. Is that gunna matter?

    How much oil must be added to the bob weight? How do you determine what type of oil to use?
    Does weight matter by the type of oil you put in the engine? Can you explain the trade off for using a higher compression ratio? Won't stroker engines be needing a different starter because of energy different to turn the engine?

    How did they balance crankshafts or tires before computers were invented?

      New subscriber here and a bit late to the party.I've balanced Harley bottom ends for 30+ years and it's done statically, a somewhat time consuming process.That means that after figuring your bob weight and drilling holes to take out weight you check to see if the assembly, with the bob weight at the crank pin and a axle set-up at the center , will stay at 3 different points and not move.Thinking of the flywheel (the "crankshaft" of a V-Twin) as a clock face, I would do it at 4, 8 and 12 o'clock.It's done with a level machined parallel fixture, each flywheel at a time.If it moves, heavy end downwards, more weight needs to be taken out until you achieve balance.I imagine it was done something like this with automotive crankshafts before dynamic computer balancing.

Do I need a rod measuring fixture or can I make one? I'm guessing the rod beam needs to be lvl when in the fixture holding the end not being weighed and the other end on the scale?

    My son and I are rebuilding a 71 C10 with a 350 that we need to rebuild. We would like the truck to be snappy. Should we build it into a stroker or can we beef up the 350? What would you recommend? We both enjoy your informative videos and are subscribers.

      A 350 is very capable of being snappy you can do a 383 but add about 2K to your budget

    Great info thanks. I have a 1985 c4 l98 tuned port injection 68000 miles. Would this be a good candidate for a 383 conversion? Thanks

    Building a 496 stroker right now, well having one built. The money that this thing is costing me I'd rather have a pro do it. Machinist and engine builder told me 10.5:1 on premium pump gas not a problem. I hope they're right because everything is set up for 10.5:1. I've got right at 7k in this engine and the last thing I need is for it to go boom right out of the gate.

      No it will work at that comp ratio are you using aluminum heads?

      Myvintageiron7512 no I'm using 781 cast heads with 2.25 intake and 1.90 exhaust with a comp roller cam. It's goin into a 67 step side C10 and I wanted to keep the cast iron look. If that makes sense. With all the machine work I could have almost bough aluminum but I decided against it. Running out of money on this one. I think this is the last BB Stroker I'll mess with.

    Ive purchased a " Street / Strip , Internal Balanced stroker " kit from Eagle , ( Scat didn't make .040 over unless you went forged $$ ) My question is , if its not balanced under a gram and I weight out and re-balance the pistons , rods , pins , ect here , then will I have to have the crank re-balanced at a shop ? Thanks for the video's.

    Actually today most people will just buy a new crank cast to the right specs. they are new with zero miles on them and you don't have to pay to have the main journals turned/machined down to the standard SBC size. The 400 cranks mains are lager than a 350 . plus the new cast crank is a better casting than the factory one, also all 400 cranks are cast as will be any reasonable priced 383 stroker your likely to buy. many of the new castings are made of a better alloy and have larger fillets which makes the crank stronger. The quality of a new casting from one of the name brands will by and large be better. Last but not lest finding an old 400 crank in useable condition today will take some time and may actually be more exspensive.
