@@kidmosey Exactly, Motor Trend may be able to do a 1970 440 'Cuda restoration for under $5k or whatever when they have a massive team of professionals as friends and several garages donating services and parts. It is always good to support and be a part of a community but what they do is not really available to the average Joe or Jane. They also do not handle the situation realistically, where they strip the ENTIRE vehicle down to every nut and bolt and rebuild, paint, replace, etc. all at once from the bottom up. Most people would fall out of love before they're done stripping the body and generally can only keep the passion doing one section at a time with decent stretches in between with the car all together and being used.
It seems that the people in the industry are really out of touch with the folks who build a engine in their driveway ..all you see is LS conversions and super chargers and on ...they end up costing more than most people make in a year ..smh
Yeah, you can cam it so sounds like a race car at idle, but you're never going to get your money's worth when it comes to performance. That said, if you aren't going racing, performance doesn't really matter. Also, the engine sure ain't light, but since you're not putting a whole lot of power through it, it should last forever.
I did a 305 with same exact heads and very similar cam with 106 love separation with headers and Q-jet carb. Made 318hp and 340 ft lbs. Runs very strong. Neat motors!
Ya just gotta love it when a plan comes together ! Not bragging by any means but I have been building Chevrolet Engines (more Big Blocks than Small blocks) since I was a Jr. In high school and I am in my early 60's now and no matter if it's a plain Jane simple re-build or an all out Drag Racing Bullet....I still get that same feeling of pride and excitement when an Engine I built comes to life and runs like it's supposed to. It's my brand of Drug and as long as I can get to and from my shop I will keep doing what I do. The Man who taught me knew in my opinion more about High Performance Big Block Chevy's than anyone I ever even heard of and the only thing he made me promise him (because he and his Wife had no children of their own) was to pass on what he taught me and what else I learn to the Next Generation and I have kept my promise, both our Daughter who is married now and our Son who is working here with me both can do everything....(almost lol) ....that I can do.
@@lazaromarino9200 Now am in the very heart of the Black Hills near Hill City. When I was a youngster I was in North Central Nebraska and the Machine Shop was called High Plains Speed & Performance. Sadly like a lot of small shops during the Fuel Crunch and EPA hayday of the late 70's the shop had passed into new owners hands by then and only took a couple of years to go under because they got too full of themselves thinking they were like a NASCAR shop or some big time Engine Shop. No Street Cars, no Farm Truck or Tractor Engines....and in that country those are the customers you really have to take care of or like happened to them you will not be around long. I even had Farmers who I knew personally bring their irrigation engines and Grain Truck Engines and more than a handful of Small Tractor Engines clear up here for me to work on just because the people who took over refused their work !.....word of mouth can be your best friend or worst enemy..... Randy Your very lucky as most kids today only play games on the computer and don't want to work or learn how to use there hands at all as oil is in there terms is NASTY ! and they don't want to get there fingers dirty ! We got a 16 & 17 year old that don't even want a drivers licenses ! MOM takes them anywhere they want to go. ----- sad , very sad . At there age I already had 2 motorcycles I built from junk !
Awesome build! Me and my son built almost the same build for him to learn on! We got a free 307 and got a free set of 416 305HO heads we also bought a competition products head upgrade kit (z28 springs, moly retainers, stainless valves,hardened locks) a summit 1785 cam and lifters .450 lift 106 LSA and an eBay engine build kit! We put a qjet and a cast iron intake and a set of speedway $89 block hugger headers! We put it in his 83 mustang and that motor ran low 14s with no machine work!
Exactly what I’m thinking about doing to my 83 GMC square body with a stock 305. Don’t wanna spend the money on an LS swap. Not chasing big dragstrip HP; just cool sound and good power. Gonna look into it.

I have a 2nd design crate 327 that I got new from the Chevy dealer in 1974ish. Has about 30K on it. Time to tear it down and clean it up. Has a Comp Cams 290° kit in it with about 10K mi on it. HMmmmmm GREAT Video. I LOVE your specific videos on certain engines, but this is a video that appeals to so many of us out here to just DO IT! If I can clean this up cheap enough, maybe I kin find some aluminum heads around to make it really nice.. My '55 Sedan Delivery (acquired in '68 for $600) has been engineless since about 1977... Oh my Gosh you have one of the most Legendary small blocks and a 55 sedan Del sitting since 77 WHAT???? .... man you gotta get that thing going I'm going to be upset if you don't! I bet you could have that thing up and going in a few months if you put your mind to it, you don't need to do it all in a day and you don't need everything to be new and perfect , you just have to make up your mind your gonna do it, especially if your retired you gotta have a project for sure, sounds very cool good luck! i just snagged a pair of aluminum l98 vette heads for $200,they are basically the same heads used in zz3 chevy crate engines.look for corvette L98 engines and parts

Make friendly, wave at the whole neighborhood, and people may become more lenient. Sure they may still complain but just be friendly say sorry and most people I hope would understand you're just having fun. Also especially important to pay attention to the time of day. Stay quiet during dinner time and early on the weekends. Also do as much work as out of sight as possible. Don't leave things half-apart on the street. Even if it isn't done hang the fenders or the hood or whatever back on so it looks better. Sure, certain yuppie suburbs can be a nightmare, but as long as you always keep smiling, don't amp up when they do, and know the rules to stick to, you can survive.

Got a little 305 HO in my ‘41 Chevy rat rod. Several modifications regarding steering, brakes, suspension with a couple more to go. It’s so light, interesting looking and for what I want very reliable and surprisingly quick (not fast). Great video!

My dad just picked up a original 67k miles 454 for 300 bucks excited to see his build. I learned Alot from you. Keeping the old school knowledge around.
Back in the old days heads used to be measured by intake valve size. Now they are measured by intake port volume. 1.94 was considered the bottom of the perf SBC heads. 2.02 were the 'Hot' SBC heads. 1.84 is picking up the bottom of the 305 heads which have nice flow patterns and the leftover 305 parts which can still take advantage of SBC parts. Good video.
Thinking being you would spend less time porting a 2.02 head b/c all heads could be ported and would be done by hand instead of with a CNC and pre-print of maximum port size. . Just relieve the angles and swirl, and that's why 2.02 was considered the top perf home built head. Handling a head with an angle grinder at home had hours of difference, having your head ported at the shop was based on a flat price range.

you are the man for sure. What a great build sounds radical. Goes to show that for those who are knowledgeable and patient with good judgement can produce a great little engine. $698 is a bargain.
I recently did a low-buck 350 last summer, me and my dad paid $80 for a ‘95 350 came with everything including the windshield motor so it was complete. We stripped it down and found it to be an 60 over 350 in really good shape so we slapped some of my dads old vortec circle track heads, cam, all gaskets. We have a wicked little street motor for under $400 and we slapped it in my 1978 Malibu.
That engine sounds so nice it inspired me to go out in the garage to start my SBC just to hear more of that sweet cam idle. I also got high on the HC's and CO, which is a side benefit.
Good to see someone build something other than a 350. I just finished my '71 307. I used the #416 305HO heads, bored .030, balanced, CompCams 260H, Performer intake and Q-jet. Can't wait to hear it run!
Awesome build. I really enjoy the budget builds that are done right. That little 305 sounds amazing with that high lift cam. I can honestly say that I've never built any V8 smaller than a 350. My brother's old 74 Z28 had a .030 over 355 in it when we restored it and it wasn't a crazy build, but it still makes 425 hp through a Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher. I think that this would definitely make a good engine for a rat rod.
So nice to see someone do a "budget build" that a real working man can do. The shows on Sunday says they have "budget builds", but in all reality, they've had the block given to them from Summit, Trick Flow heads given to them, etc.
Awhile ago I commented on one of these videos. I made the comment of when installing the timing chain and gear set, once the cam and crank gears are aligned (Crank at 12, cam at 6), both dots need to be moved to the 12 o'clock position before installing the distributor in order to fire at number 1. After doing a few more builds since then I found that this isn't always true. I did this same technique with a flat tappet cam from Comp Cams. When I went to fire the engine ignition timing was 180 out. This rule isn't always true and is based depending on what cam manufacturer is used. Great video's you do. I have learned little bits of info in them. Keep them coming.
Chris Kyle never hit a dyno but I’d guess around 300.. I know it was nothing crazy I’ve driven turbo 4 cylinders that were much faster but for an extremely cheap build with parts I sourced off craigslist and stuff I loved the car.. just fast enough to have fun and hoon around in and cheap enough not to care if you break it
This is a great video. I’ve got an 81 Malibu that has a 305 with an unknown cam, and runs great. Why this video is good for me is because just dipping my toe into the rod scene, this helps me to get started and play with what I have till I can invest in something else. And learn, most important part. Thanks for the video
biggest thing is ,if you are going i9nto the engine and buying a kit just do yourself a favor and buy a 350 core instead of spending the same money on 45 less cubic inches.if you are just doing a few bolt ons on the 305 buy parts you can later use on a 350 build.buy things once instead of twice. buy the intake you can reuse like an edlebrock rpm,buy a 650 holley or edlebrock not the smaller 305 version then you can reuse it.
Awesome build and a great example for someone needing to power a work truck on a budget etc. Also with some more scrounging over time you could easily add some better parts to the basic kit for more power too. I found a set of Eagle rods new for $150 for a friends build not too long ago, add a set of Hypereutectic Pistons(about a $100 more for the kit), a mild home port/gasket match job etc and for a 2-300 hundred more you'd have a nice little motor that could take a little spray if you want. Just don't go for too much more than 1-1.5hp per cube and she'd be fine. I had a 30 over 305 in a S10 years ago that ran mid to low 12's back around 99-01. I know it's slow by todays standards but I had about a $1000 in everything except (motor/trans) for the rear. So at the time it was pretty good for what it was and it was a ton of fun.
About to rebuild my 305 tbi. 91 stepside truck with 700r. Learned so much watching all the vids. Just bought some books. Trying to keep it inspection legal. Gonna swap to carb, having to figure out how the electronic side will work with it all.

Though I love the concept here and think that that engine is amazing bang for the buck, it can’t be duplicated. Machine work and ebay parts for my next 355 short block adds up to $1100... that’s without cam, lifter, etc. on a block I already have. To clean and bore a block costs $400 where I’m at. This is why everyone goes for crate engines.
Ya. What did he say 50 or 80 bucks for the bore and cleaning. He sends 100 blocks or more over to that shop a year and got a hella cheap ass deal. Then around 14:00 In he finally says something about “my buddies machine shop”. I might be mistaken but didn’t he say the heads are not the ones that came off the 50 buck block but 305HD OR HP heads? Then he didn’t put a price on them on that first list but talked about them again. I’m only 18 min in now so he might later idk. I was hoping for a true cost budget build on a 305 trying to make as much real horse power and torque as they could on a budget. Idk why I’m not interested in building one. Hell a 5.3 LS or the smaller one what is it 4.8 are cheap enough and wow they make power with a little nitrous kit or homemade turbo kinda setup. I’m sick of LS swaps as much as the next guy but I’m comparing it with this.

@@ronspencer4661 IN 85 the 305HO made about 185hp. This one might make 225-250. It pretty much stock eccept for the cam and that's not a great cam for that low compression 305.
Gday. Awesome video, very informative indeed. So it is known, I am no mechanic and have minimally knowledge of the inner-workings of a chevy motor or any motor for that matter. So, I'm an Aussie bloke who, a few months back purchased a 67 Camaro from the states, Maryland California in fact. I always loved Camaro's and it has taken me 26 years of my adult life to finally get one, how excited I was when it finally arrived!!! Anyhow, to my knowledge it is a relatively stock 327, aside from an Edelbrock Holley, and small cam (all mods done by previous owner in the USA & specs are unknown), power-glide, the differential I believe is factory. After watching this video it became clear if I am to enhance my Chev's performance I will need to rebuild the engine and originally, and somewhat impatiently, I had planned to replace the power-glide with a TH350 and torque converter but after watching this video I realise that's not the way to go. At present my Camaro drives well and everything works as it should. Note: I do not intend to drag my Camaro, I'm seeking a cool, slightly 'lumpy' sounding engine with a little grunt from a standing start, enough to get the juices flowing but other than that it with be driven as a cruiser! Any thoughts about what type of engine kit I should purchase to rebuild without any block mods? And should I also invest in a th350 and converter alongside the rebuild? for 6K you can build a real nice engine I would most definitly go with a set of aluminum heads and a nice roller cam no need to stroke it use stock crank I know you guys down under have some really good machine shops hopefully there is one near you have the block cleaned and bored you will also need a good balance job I think a hyperutectic flat top piston will work nicely get a set of heads with 2.020/1.600 valves and a 64cc chambers intake runners should be 180 200 cc runners are too big for a 327 a good set of ceramic coated headers and duel plain intake with 700 cfm carb and that thing will scream I would stick with the power glide they are super strong if your going to up grade the trans go with a 700R4 low 1st gear and overdrive turbo 350's are weak the power glide is much stronger or a beefed up 700R4 is ok too buy pricey
Myvintageiron7512 Well I must say, thanks so much for the reply man, that’s so cool and plenty of information for me to mull-over. Since I sent this msg I have spoken to several dudes, one of which races drag cars and he reckons pulling my 327 out (keep it original) and replacing with a 350. Here’s the options he said. 1. For about $7k we could do a 330HP Vortec 350 Chev but it wont sound tough. Although we can cam it up and get it up to about 395HP without much problem. 2. Next step is a 390HP 350 with alloy heads and roller cam. About $8500 complete, will have a bit of a lump. 3. Next step is 383 with 440HP then can go up to a 396 with 490HP. Which option is best? I’m stretching my budget with any of the above and originally I was happy to purchase secondhand too!! 🤙🏻

Every time I speak to a dude in the motor/engine industry I get steered in another direction, bloody confusing!! Anyhow, I spoke to my mechanic who is an 70yo dude who has been in the industry for 50 years, has a workshop at his home and he told me to chill and sit on the 327 for the coming summer, to be honest, that advice has fallen on deaf ears!!😂So I’m going with your advice ey, just one last question, do I need to upgrade my torque converter and if so what would you recommend? I was recently informed it is wise to update plugs, leads etc prior to getting a ‘dyno-tune’, yet I wouldn’t need to do that would I if I rebuild the motor? Great video. Got you subscribed for a while now. In the process of doing a 305 myself in a back yard refurb/build... Cleaned up the factory "801" heads with EZ Off oven cleaner then new seals and valve lapping, Got an Edelbrock 1405 carb and Edlebrock 2701 EPS intake for $50, new waterpump, new oil pump, new timing chain and gears, new harmonic balancer, spark plugs, wires etc, all new gaskets and seals, a pair of really clean rams horns manifolds for $40. Washed the block down myself with a couple of gallons of varsol and scrapers and brushes and a big catch tray. Hoping it will be enough motor to pull my '54 Pontiac hearse.

@@goinjones Change the pistons and you won't regret it later. That 8.5 smog compression really does suck the power potential out of a 455. Besides that Lucky Costa fixes 99% of whatever Freiburger works on. :-D
@@goinjones a 455 doesn't require high compression to make good power. I say leave the lower compression piston in there and run regular gas and don't worry about detonation. Hell, my 455 SD is 8.5:1 and it is not lacking anything.
I did a 383 budget build few years ago heads cam intake all forged turbocharged sbc that ran a LSX ecu cost around 6500.00$ . Everything from the oil pan up was new. I still have it today I couldn't be happier . Only thing I wish is would of went with a 400 block.

FiY ; in 1983 Los Angeles; I bought a Reconditioned Chev 327 short block delivered to Redondo Beach $350 ; for my 1975 Camaro (350) . I only lapped the valves. Fitted the old water pump . A friend and I assembeled it over a weekend the heads and dropped it back into the Camaro . It drove very responsive !. :Fun :)

This is very similar to my car. I have an 82 Camaro Z28 that I got from the original owner and he had the stock 305 bored 30 over and reconditioned the stock heads, swapped out the cam for a mild Crane Energizer cam & lifters, aluminum intake and Holly 4BBL 650CFM carb, shorty headers, electronic fuel pump with 373 gears and a stage two shift kit. The car is at right around 300-315hp as it is, I'd like to up the power by 100hp and everybody's answer is to just buy a 350 which is fine, but id like to keep the original engine in it if possible. I'm hoping that if I change the stock exhaust to a Flowmaster system and upgrade the cam to a more aggressive one(matched to the engine of course) and a new torque converter(2500+ stall) with possibly a Holly Sniper EFI system(maybe) along with a set of decent aluminum heads might do the trick. More research needed
HP is about cubic inches and air flow. You have to flow the air & fuel that will make the target HP. A 305 is going to have a bit of a hard time doing that w/o turning 7,000 ... And then it might not be very friendly on the street. The cheapest way to keep everything is to just add a blower. Edelbrock, Wieand, it does not make a lot of difference. 5PSI boost should get you what you want w/o changing much, and it will not kill the engine :)
If you are at 300, and you want 400, you are 75% of the way. Making another 25% will prolly not happen with your suggested changes unless the new heads push the CR up to 10~11 to 1. Basically what you are asking for is a 302 race motor. Can be done, but kinda peaky and not much bottom end at all. That might be miserable on the street ... OTOH, a small blown boost adds power at all RPM ranges, so you can forego the converter change, etc. That is why MFG's love to add a blower for their "special" cars. They can be driven by wives and girlfriends w/o issue.
Broc Luno I’ve been pondering this since my original post and I think you are definitely right. I’m going to look at that along with a possible engine & trans swap to a 350 even though I originally didn’t want to do it.
Thanks man this really helps a lot I was having some regrets of buying a 305 instead of a 350 but for 80$ (including complete engine transmission and headers) I feel way better in the buy wasn’t planning on a high horse power build since this is going to be my first rebuild
I love 305s. Good drivability decent milage. Plus at at $50 to a $100 bucks each I stockpile them. With a little preparation they can take a 175 shot of happy gas and live a couple of weekends running in the mid 11s in a light car. S10, maverick, what have ya. Been doing it for years and I've only pushed a piston out twice. Mostly broken rings and blown head gaskets. Reuse headers, intake, cam what ever survives. Hell it makes me feel like a I'm one of the big boys. Point is if your gonna do something dangerous, stupid and fun do it cheep.
Yeah and then the cost to remove the old engine and then install this one that's another $1,500 easily. So what does that put you around 3,100 total???
I have gt40p heads on my 302 that are painted metallic aluminum. You wouldn't believe how many people have fussed about it once the realised they were iron heads that I painted to look aluminum. My block is Massey Ferguson grey with the valve covers and explorer intake crickle black. Looks pretty good.
When I was in high school My Dad, Brother, Uncle and I built a very similar engine for my Dad’s ‘63 Chevy shortbox, ( the cam/valvetrain was a base Edelbrock performer set up along with the performer manifold and 600cfm carb, stock HEI) until recently we ran it with a 700r4, and a 10 bolt dogleg with .273 gears, the silly thing is that it was thrillingly fast! And sounded better than anything out there with cheap long tube headers and 2,1/4” purple hornies and angle cut pipes exiting in front of the rear wheels, I highly recommend this combination in a light weight vehicle, like a Datsun or something. I’m almost reluctantly replacing this combo with a turbo, 496 stroker, power glide and gears to be determined in a much stronger rear end ( still need to find that last part)
Btw, the rear end will be from Tom’s differentials in Sandpoint Idaho. Tom passed a couple years ago, but his legacy is an incredible inventory, and a RIGID understanding of quality in his family some of whom I happen to know personally. Even if you don’t end up buying hardware check out their merchandise, the Butt logo beanie is something you need to own.

Oh no! I have a couple of sets of 283 power pack heads and I’ve always wondered how a ported set would run on that engine, now I feel like I almost have to throw the Datrod together, damn and I just this instant had to name it. I might return to this thread in the future...
Myvintageiron7512 yeah, you totally should, it’s a real shame Tom Watt isn’t around anymore he was a car guy’s car guy. And the products he carried and or manufactured were always top notch. His Corvette independent rears are the best out there for extreme use. His 9” Ford housings are Bitchin too

It is always good to support and be a part of a community but what they do is not really available to the average Joe or Jane. They also do not handle the situation realistically, where they strip the ENTIRE vehicle down to every nut and bolt and rebuild, paint, replace, etc. all at once from the bottom up. Most people would fall out of love before they're done stripping the body and generally can only keep the passion doing one section at a time with decent stretches in between with the car all together and being used.
It seems that the people in the industry are really out of touch with the folks who build a engine in their driveway ..all you see is LS conversions and super chargers and on ...they end up costing more than most people make in a year ..smh

Yeah, you can cam it so sounds like a race car at idle, but you're never going to get your money's worth when it comes to performance. That said, if you aren't going racing, performance doesn't really matter. Also, the engine sure ain't light, but since you're not putting a whole lot of power through it, it should last forever.

I did a 305 with same exact heads and very similar cam with 106 love separation with headers and Q-jet carb. Made 318hp and 340 ft lbs. Runs very strong. Neat motors!

Not bragging by any means but I have been building Chevrolet Engines (more Big Blocks than Small blocks) since I was a Jr. In high school and I am in my early 60's now and no matter if it's a plain Jane simple re-build or an all out Drag Racing Bullet....I still get that same feeling of pride and excitement when an Engine I built comes to life and runs like it's supposed to. It's my brand of Drug and as long as I can get to and from my shop I will keep doing what I do.
The Man who taught me knew in my opinion more about High Performance Big Block Chevy's than anyone I ever even heard of and the only thing he made me promise him (because he and his Wife had no children of their own) was to pass on what he taught me and what else I learn to the Next Generation and I have kept my promise, both our Daughter who is married now and our Son who is working here with me both can do everything....(almost lol) ....that I can do.

When I was a youngster I was in North Central Nebraska and the Machine Shop was called High Plains Speed & Performance.
Sadly like a lot of small shops during the Fuel Crunch and EPA hayday of the late 70's the shop had passed into new owners hands by then and only took a couple of years to go under because they got too full of themselves thinking they were like a NASCAR shop or some big time Engine Shop. No Street Cars, no Farm Truck or Tractor Engines....and in that country those are the customers you really have to take care of or like happened to them you will not be around long. I even had Farmers who I knew personally bring their irrigation engines and Grain Truck Engines and more than a handful of Small Tractor Engines clear up here for me to work on just because the people who took over refused their work !.....word of mouth can be your best friend or worst enemy.....

Awesome build! Me and my son built almost the same build for him to learn on! We got a free 307 and got a free set of 416 305HO heads we also bought a competition products head upgrade kit (z28 springs, moly retainers, stainless valves,hardened locks) a summit 1785 cam and lifters .450 lift 106 LSA and an eBay engine build kit! We put a qjet and a cast iron intake and a set of speedway $89 block hugger headers! We put it in his 83 mustang and that motor ran low 14s with no machine work!
Exactly what I’m thinking about doing to my 83 GMC square body with a stock 305. Don’t wanna spend the money on an LS swap. Not chasing big dragstrip HP; just cool sound and good power. Gonna look into it.

i just snagged a pair of aluminum l98 vette heads for $200,they are basically the same heads used in zz3 chevy crate engines.look for corvette L98 engines and parts

Make friendly, wave at the whole neighborhood, and people may become more lenient. Sure they may still complain but just be friendly say sorry and most people I hope would understand you're just having fun. Also especially important to pay attention to the time of day. Stay quiet during dinner time and early on the weekends. Also do as much work as out of sight as possible. Don't leave things half-apart on the street. Even if it isn't done hang the fenders or the hood or whatever back on so it looks better. Sure, certain yuppie suburbs can be a nightmare, but as long as you always keep smiling, don't amp up when they do, and know the rules to stick to, you can survive.

Got a little 305 HO in my ‘41 Chevy rat rod. Several modifications regarding steering, brakes, suspension with a couple more to go. It’s so light, interesting looking and for what I want very reliable and surprisingly quick (not fast). Great video!

My dad just picked up a original 67k miles 454 for 300 bucks excited to see his build. I learned Alot from you. Keeping the old school knowledge around.
Back in the old days heads used to be measured by intake valve size. Now they are measured by intake port volume.
1.94 was considered the bottom of the perf SBC heads.
2.02 were the 'Hot' SBC heads.
1.84 is picking up the bottom of the 305 heads which have nice flow patterns and the leftover 305 parts which can still take advantage of SBC parts.

Thinking being you would spend less time porting a 2.02 head b/c all heads could be ported and would be done by hand instead of with a CNC and pre-print of maximum port size. . Just relieve the angles and swirl, and that's why 2.02 was considered the top perf home built head. Handling a head with an angle grinder at home had hours of difference, having your head ported at the shop was based on a flat price range.

For a street car, something for enjoying a classic car in manner vast majority of enthusiasts really use it … the 305 Chevy is a great choice
I recently did a low-buck 350 last summer, me and my dad paid $80 for a ‘95 350 came with everything including the windshield motor so it was complete. We stripped it down and found it to be an 60 over 350 in really good shape so we slapped some of my dads old vortec circle track heads, cam, all gaskets. We have a wicked little street motor for under $400 and we slapped it in my 1978 Malibu.

That engine sounds so nice it inspired me to go out in the garage to start my SBC just to hear more of that sweet cam idle. I also got high on the HC's and CO, which is a side benefit.

Awesome build. I really enjoy the budget builds that are done right. That little 305 sounds amazing with that high lift cam. I can honestly say that I've never built any V8 smaller than a 350. My brother's old 74 Z28 had a .030 over 355 in it when we restored it and it wasn't a crazy build, but it still makes 425 hp through a Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher. I think that this would definitely make a good engine for a rat rod.
So nice to see someone do a "budget build" that a real working man can do. The shows on Sunday says they have "budget builds", but in all reality, they've had the block given to them from Summit, Trick Flow heads given to them, etc.

Awhile ago I commented on one of these videos. I made the comment of when installing the timing chain and gear set, once the cam and crank gears are aligned (Crank at 12, cam at 6), both dots need to be moved to the 12 o'clock position before installing the distributor in order to fire at number 1. After doing a few more builds since then I found that this isn't always true. I did this same technique with a flat tappet cam from Comp Cams. When I went to fire the engine ignition timing was 180 out. This rule isn't always true and is based depending on what cam manufacturer is used. Great video's you do. I have learned little bits of info in them. Keep them coming.
yeah comp builds a lot of chevy off shelf cams with 6* degrees cam advance built in also.

Chris Kyle never hit a dyno but I’d guess around 300.. I know it was nothing crazy I’ve driven turbo 4 cylinders that were much faster but for an extremely cheap build with parts I sourced off craigslist and stuff I loved the car.. just fast enough to have fun and hoon around in and cheap enough not to care if you break it

This is a great video. I’ve got an 81 Malibu that has a 305 with an unknown cam, and runs great. Why this video is good for me is because just dipping my toe into the rod scene, this helps me to get started and play with what I have till I can invest in something else. And learn, most important part. Thanks for the video
biggest thing is ,if you are going i9nto the engine and buying a kit just do yourself a favor and buy a 350 core instead of spending the same money on 45 less cubic inches.if you are just doing a few bolt ons on the 305 buy parts you can later use on a 350 build.buy things once instead of twice. buy the intake you can reuse like an edlebrock rpm,buy a 650 holley or edlebrock not the smaller 305 version then you can reuse it.

Awesome build and a great example for someone needing to power a work truck on a budget etc. Also with some more scrounging over time you could easily add some better parts to the basic kit for more power too. I found a set of Eagle rods new for $150 for a friends build not too long ago, add a set of Hypereutectic Pistons(about a $100 more for the kit), a mild home port/gasket match job etc and for a 2-300 hundred more you'd have a nice little motor that could take a little spray if you want. Just don't go for too much more than 1-1.5hp per cube and she'd be fine.
I had a 30 over 305 in a S10 years ago that ran mid to low 12's back around 99-01. I know it's slow by todays standards but I had about a $1000 in everything except (motor/trans) for the rear. So at the time it was pretty good for what it was and it was a ton of fun.

Though I love the concept here and think that that engine is amazing bang for the buck, it can’t be duplicated. Machine work and ebay parts for my next 355 short block adds up to $1100... that’s without cam, lifter, etc. on a block I already have. To clean and bore a block costs $400 where I’m at. This is why everyone goes for crate engines.

Ya. What did he say 50 or 80 bucks for the bore and cleaning. He sends 100 blocks or more over to that shop a year and got a hella cheap ass deal. Then around 14:00 In he finally says something about “my buddies machine shop”.
I might be mistaken but didn’t he say the heads are not the ones that came off the 50 buck block but 305HD OR HP heads? Then he didn’t put a price on them on that first list but talked about them again. I’m only 18 min in now so he might later idk.
I was hoping for a true cost budget build on a 305 trying to make as much real horse power and torque as they could on a budget. Idk why I’m not interested in building one. Hell a 5.3 LS or the smaller one what is it 4.8 are cheap enough and wow they make power with a little nitrous kit or homemade turbo kinda setup. I’m sick of LS swaps as much as the next guy but I’m comparing it with this.
Even tho prices have changed this gave me a good idea of what cheap mods I can get away with.

So it is known, I am no mechanic and have minimally knowledge of the inner-workings of a chevy motor or any motor for that matter.
So, I'm an Aussie bloke who, a few months back purchased a 67 Camaro from the states, Maryland California in fact. I always loved Camaro's and it has taken me 26 years of my adult life to finally get one, how excited I was when it finally arrived!!!
Anyhow, to my knowledge it is a relatively stock 327, aside from an Edelbrock Holley, and small cam (all mods done by previous owner in the USA & specs are unknown), power-glide, the differential I believe is factory.
After watching this video it became clear if I am to enhance my Chev's performance I will need to rebuild the engine and originally, and somewhat impatiently, I had planned to replace the power-glide with a TH350 and torque converter but after watching this video I realise that's not the way to go. At present my Camaro drives well and everything works as it should.
Note: I do not intend to drag my Camaro, I'm seeking a cool, slightly 'lumpy' sounding engine with a little grunt from a standing start, enough to get the juices flowing but other than that it with be driven as a cruiser!
Any thoughts about what type of engine kit I should purchase to rebuild without any block mods? And should I also invest in a th350 and converter alongside the rebuild?

for 6K you can build a real nice engine I would most definitly go with a set of aluminum heads and a nice roller cam no need to stroke it use stock crank I know you guys down under have some really good machine shops hopefully there is one near you have the block cleaned and bored you will also need a good balance job I think a hyperutectic flat top piston will work nicely get a set of heads with 2.020/1.600 valves and a 64cc chambers intake runners should be 180 200 cc runners are too big for a 327 a good set of ceramic coated headers and duel plain intake with 700 cfm carb and that thing will scream I would stick with the power glide they are super strong if your going to up grade the trans go with a 700R4 low 1st gear and overdrive turbo 350's are weak the power glide is much stronger or a beefed up 700R4 is ok too buy pricey
Myvintageiron7512 Well I must say, thanks so much for the reply man, that’s so cool and plenty of information for me to mull-over. Since I sent this msg I have spoken to several dudes, one of which races drag cars and he reckons pulling my 327 out (keep it original) and replacing with a 350.
Here’s the options he said.
1. For about $7k we could do a 330HP Vortec 350 Chev but it wont sound tough. Although we can cam it up and get it up to about 395HP without much problem.
2. Next step is a 390HP 350 with alloy heads and roller cam. About $8500 complete, will have a bit of a lump.
3. Next step is 383 with 440HP then can go up to a 396 with 490HP.
Which option is best? I’m stretching my budget with any of the above and originally I was happy to purchase secondhand too!! 🤙🏻

Every time I speak to a dude in the motor/engine industry I get steered in another direction, bloody confusing!! Anyhow, I spoke to my mechanic who is an 70yo dude who has been in the industry for 50 years, has a workshop at his home and he told me to chill and sit on the 327 for the coming summer, to be honest, that advice has fallen on deaf ears!!😂So I’m going with your advice ey, just one last question, do I need to upgrade my torque converter and if so what would you recommend? I was recently informed it is wise to update plugs, leads etc prior to getting a ‘dyno-tune’, yet I wouldn’t need to do that would I if I rebuild the motor? In the process of doing a 305 myself in a back yard refurb/build...
Cleaned up the factory "801" heads with EZ Off oven cleaner then new seals and valve lapping, Got an Edelbrock 1405 carb and Edlebrock 2701 EPS intake for $50, new waterpump, new oil pump, new timing chain and gears, new harmonic balancer, spark plugs, wires etc, all new gaskets and seals, a pair of really clean rams horns manifolds for $40. Washed the block down myself with a couple of gallons of varsol and scrapers and brushes and a big catch tray. Hoping it will be enough motor to pull my '54 Pontiac hearse.

Change the pistons and you won't regret it later. That 8.5 smog compression really does suck the power potential out of a 455.
Besides that Lucky Costa fixes 99% of whatever Freiburger works on. :-D
@@goinjones a 455 doesn't require high compression to make good power. I say leave the lower compression piston in there and run regular gas and don't worry about detonation. Hell, my 455 SD is 8.5:1 and it is not lacking anything.

I did a 383 budget build few years ago heads cam intake all forged turbocharged sbc that ran a LSX ecu cost around 6500.00$ . Everything from the oil pan up was new. I still have it today I couldn't be happier . Only thing I wish is would of went with a 400 block.

They used to sell a pretty cheap 383 sbc stroker kit. It had pretty much everything for like $600.

FiY ; in 1983 Los Angeles; I bought a Reconditioned Chev 327 short block delivered to Redondo Beach $350 ; for my 1975 Camaro (350) . I only lapped the valves. Fitted the old water pump . A friend and I assembeled it over a weekend the heads and dropped it back into the Camaro . It drove very responsive !. :Fun :)

This is very similar to my car. I have an 82 Camaro Z28 that I got from the original owner and he had the stock 305 bored 30 over and reconditioned the stock heads, swapped out the cam for a mild Crane Energizer cam & lifters, aluminum intake and Holly 4BBL 650CFM carb, shorty headers, electronic fuel pump with 373 gears and a stage two shift kit. The car is at right around 300-315hp as it is, I'd like to up the power by 100hp and everybody's answer is to just buy a 350 which is fine, but id like to keep the original engine in it if possible. I'm hoping that if I change the stock exhaust to a Flowmaster system and upgrade the cam to a more aggressive one(matched to the engine of course) and a new torque converter(2500+ stall) with possibly a Holly Sniper EFI system(maybe) along with a set of decent aluminum heads might do the trick. More research needed
HP is about cubic inches and air flow. You have to flow the air & fuel that will make the target HP. A 305 is going to have a bit of a hard time doing that w/o turning 7,000 ... And then it might not be very friendly on the street.
The cheapest way to keep everything is to just add a blower. Edelbrock, Wieand, it does not make a lot of difference. 5PSI boost should get you what you want w/o changing much, and it will not kill the engine :)

If you are at 300, and you want 400, you are 75% of the way. Making another 25% will prolly not happen with your suggested changes unless the new heads push the CR up to 10~11 to 1. Basically what you are asking for is a 302 race motor. Can be done, but kinda peaky and not much bottom end at all. That might be miserable on the street ... OTOH, a small blown boost adds power at all RPM ranges, so you can forego the converter change, etc. That is why MFG's love to add a blower for their "special" cars. They can be driven by wives and girlfriends w/o issue.
Broc Luno I’ve been pondering this since my original post and I think you are definitely right. I’m going to look at that along with a possible engine & trans swap to a 350 even though I originally didn’t want to do it.
Thanks man this really helps a lot I was having some regrets of buying a 305 instead of a 350 but for 80$ (including complete engine transmission and headers) I feel way better in the buy wasn’t planning on a high horse power build since this is going to be my first rebuild

Nice would be cool to see similar with a 318 not a common built motor anymore but lots of them around still in Jeep's and Dakota's etc.
I love 305s. Good drivability decent milage. Plus at at $50 to a $100 bucks each I stockpile them. With a little preparation they can take a 175 shot of happy gas and live a couple of weekends running in the mid 11s in a light car. S10, maverick, what have ya. Been doing it for years and I've only pushed a piston out twice. Mostly broken rings and blown head gaskets. Reuse headers, intake, cam what ever survives. Hell it makes me feel like a I'm one of the big boys. Point is if your gonna do something dangerous, stupid and fun do it cheep.

I have gt40p heads on my 302 that are painted metallic aluminum. You wouldn't believe how many people have fussed about it once the realised they were iron heads that I painted to look aluminum. My block is Massey Ferguson grey with the valve covers and explorer intake crickle black. Looks pretty good.

When I was in high school My Dad, Brother, Uncle and I built a very similar engine for my Dad’s ‘63 Chevy shortbox, ( the cam/valvetrain was a base Edelbrock performer set up along with the performer manifold and 600cfm carb, stock HEI) until recently we ran it with a 700r4, and a 10 bolt dogleg with .273 gears, the silly thing is that it was thrillingly fast! And sounded better than anything out there with cheap long tube headers and 2,1/4” purple hornies and angle cut pipes exiting in front of the rear wheels, I highly recommend this combination in a light weight vehicle, like a Datsun or something. I’m almost reluctantly replacing this combo with a turbo, 496 stroker, power glide and gears to be determined in a much stronger rear end ( still need to find that last part)
Btw, the rear end will be from Tom’s differentials in Sandpoint Idaho. Tom passed a couple years ago, but his legacy is an incredible inventory, and a RIGID understanding of quality in his family some of whom I happen to know personally. Even if you don’t end up buying hardware check out their merchandise, the Butt logo beanie is something you need to own.

Oh no! I have a couple of sets of 283 power pack heads and I’ve always wondered how a ported set would run on that engine, now I feel like I almost have to throw the Datrod together, damn and I just this instant had to name it. I might return to this thread in the future...

Myvintageiron7512 yeah, you totally should, it’s a real shame Tom Watt isn’t around anymore he was a car guy’s car guy. And the products he carried and or manufactured were always top notch. His Corvette independent rears are the best out there for extreme use. His 9” Ford housings are Bitchin too
