  • On this women's day, we bring you the stories of fearless and most courageous women. Meet Damayanti Vijay Tambay, a six time National Badminton Champion and Arjuna Awardee whose husband went missing after the 1971 war between India and Pakistan.
She, along with 53 other military families, has always believed her husband Flt Lt Vijay Tambay was alive and imprisoned in a Pakistan jail.
Though she spent less than two years with her husband before he went to the frontline, she has spent five decades looking for him.
"To have experienced even one and half years of love is worth everything to me," she tells Barkha Dutt. This is an extraordinary love story.

My uncle Major AK Ghosh is one of the missing person from this list. All of his older brothers now dead including his own daughter, who tried so hard to find information about him believing he is still alive and in Pakistan. We need closure and decades of trying to get information has come to naught. This message needs to be amplified.

The interview of Mrs Damayanti, had stoked emotions in me. The lady was grace, grandeur, intelligent, articulate & poise personified. I can understand how fond was her husband of her. Her picture shot in the Kashmir valley probably her honeymoon trip also made for interesting sight. I felt the GOI for so long had been most deaf to her appeal. I m thankful to God that her talent as a national badminton champion, proved useful to her in getting her a job of repute at a prestigious university. Had she only had to rely on pension, life would have been hard. I m air veteran, so I could relate to her description on trench digging and married quaters being located in close proximity to the tarmac. Her devotion to her husband and his memory is an extraordinary saga. If I were a filmmaker, I would have latched onto the story. Thank you Mojostory for bringing this interview.

Living with Memories of a good charismatic person in ur life is a treasure..The few days she spent with her husband was more precious than years and years of togetherness....Only a woman can wait for this long for a man she loves ..Hats off to a woman of substance...Rare to find these days where people are waiting to degrade each other....True love needs perseverance and faith...Most often such true love remains one sided

Thank you, Barkha, for bringing Damayanti's story of love and dedication to the fore. Her brothers are my army mates. Especially her younger brother with whom I shared a room during a course in 1997. I don't know now if I am mistaken, but her quest has been a story I have told friends and family. I have been following the story ever since the internet came about and remember Dushyant her brother.
Late Col Smittens story is similar. He got out of Pakistan's jails through a chance meeting with an American Red Cross worker.
They shifted the PWs through several jails. The wardens don't really care who they are. Red Cross is one way to find them. I think the pic on Times helped Col Smittens. His story is somewhere on the internet written by late wg cdr Unni Kartha.
Thanks again for Damayanti's story. Great woman!!

Wars never help anyone. Mrs Gandhi was so bad at understanding logistics just like her father. All they wanted to hear was personal praise by international players- the narcissists in them were more important to them, then the people they lead. The Indian Defenses have lost so much they gained in terms of land and people all due to this first family (highly self obsessed and self centered) that ruined India. The non dynastic, non Congress governments have a lot of backlog and political messiness to fix before things get sorted out. But they are making efforts to help in many cases such as bringing Navy people back, for instance, etc. It will take time to fix the mess that the Congress governments created. I feel for this wonderful lady, tears of compassion. Many courageous ladies in the Indian Army have similar stories. So many wives of Jawans/soldiers have similar stories and waiting for their husbands- they just don't talk about it, for varied reasons.
Respect to Damyanti Jee, respect to them all.🙏

In her era women women was honest and had honour and this type of thinking wud cm natural. She loves her husband and stood by her vows. Y is that so hard for the host to understand. I'm a bit surprised that she thinks she shud hv moved on bc I taut India they stuck to these principles of love and marriage. I expect otherwise from us in the west. This lady is remarkable one in a million. I hope she still somehow somewhere finds him, She deserves it. She's a woman of class and substance. I can understand her.
Wat is happiness she said..Her happiness was her husband and she was contented something in this era we need more of. It has become extinct. we leave one now and pick up one tomorrow.

Is heart wrenching story I feel so sad for all concerned. I too am an army officers daughter. What a Powerful Noble Lady. I wish the government could help this dear lady, even now.India is a Very Powerful Nation and we have to find out more.where are these Brave officers. How much pain she still bears These Officers fought for Our Nation to protect us ..In turn we All have to do something to help her find out the happenings. There has to be some discloser. Indian government must put Immense pressure on The Pakistanis and send a team of officials. . We need to know what has happen. It’s terrible not knowing. I really hope with today’s media revolution this Lovely lady knows either way what happened to her beloved husband. It is not fair . The Government has to do something. I do feel we need to investigate and open the cases Thoroughly.
India has to use their intelligence agency and POWER to find out what is the real situation IS.

My respect to the brave lady. And thank you Barkha Dutt for bringing out such emotional yet powerful story. Watching the episode with tears. Warm regards to Ma'am and may her husband rest in peace wherever he is.

I wish and hope her husband comes back some how.
The PM office should try hard to get some kind of closure.
Give some money to Pak and get the soldier back.
Mount pressure on Pak from US, UK, Russia, China, Canada etc.
    Jai Hind 😊
