Ferrari SF-24 matches pace of Red Bull RB20 despite lack of updates | 2024 F1 Miami GP analysis

The 2024 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix ended with a bitter taste for Scuderia Ferrari. Despite Charles Leclerc's podium finish, there was a lingering sense of missed opportunity following the race weekend held at the Miami International Autodrome in Florida. Undoubtedly, Lando Norris' victory was well-deserved, as his McLaren proved to be the fastest car on the track, a fact evident to all observers. However, there was understandable disappointment for Charles Leclerc, who once again couldn't capitalize on a less than ideal performance from Max Verstappen and Red Bull.
One contributing factor to Ferrari's disappointment, as discussed immediately after the checkered flag in Miami, is the absence of SF-24 updates that the Maranello team has yet to introduce. These updates are expected to be implemented on the two Ferrari cars in two weeks' time, coinciding with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix scheduled at the Imola circuit in Italy. Despite being touted as a significant aerodynamic upgrade package, Team Principal Frederic Vasseur seemed to downplay its impact somewhat after Sunday night's race. Nonetheless, drivers are eagerly awaiting it, hoping for a performance boost of two to three tenths per lap, although these expectations remain speculative at this stage.
However, amidst the disappointment, there were positive aspects to take away, particularly in the impressive pace demonstrated by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz throughout the race. Leclerc managed to stay closely behind Verstappen for most of the afternoon in Miami. Although Verstappen maintained a slight advantage per lap over the two Ferrari drivers, it was not a significant margin considering the baseline performance of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc's cars. The standout performer, however, was Lando Norris, whose McLaren MCL38 appeared significantly improved, reminiscent of a B-spec version seen at the Chinese Grand Prix just two weeks earlier at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Nevertheless, Charles Leclerc's Ferrari showcased its competitiveness once again. Despite a challenging start and a reckless maneuver from Sergio Perez, who almost collided with his teammate and the two Ferrari drivers, Leclerc managed to regain position from Carlos Sainz. While Leclerc kept pace with Oscar Piastri, he lacked the necessary speed to overtake him at the end of the straight. Although Carlos Sainz trailed closely behind, the difference between the two drivers wasn't substantial enough to warrant the position swap fervently requested by the Spaniard over the team radio, which went unanswered by the Maranello pit wall.
