@@AVPerth If GoldenEye was from Alec's perspective, it could almost be like an unrequited love song gone terribly wrong. "Other girls they gather around him. If i had him, I wouldn't let him out". It certainly seems like it's an outsider's perspective, certainly not Bond's... but the line about "You'll never know how I watched you from the shadows as a child" doesn't entirely work, unless Bond is significantly older than Alec. We know Alec was orphaned and raised by MI6 at the age of six, but Bond started work with MI6 at about 20... from what I could piece together, unless the canon changed with GoldenEye.
@@hoodyboody "As a child" refers to Alec being helpless as a child. About the "other girls", well, it's Tina Turner singing, but Alec did want Bond for himself to use in his vendetta (he knew he couldn't), so... The meaning is hanging in the air, but has some places to land.
TWINE has such a special place in my heart. This was the first Bond flick I saw as a kid and it’s still to this day the one I’ve probably seen the most.
Same! I made plans with friends to watch it on the big screen but wanted background on the Bond films so my Dad rented Dr. No for me the previous night. I was 13 so that film put me to sleep. And I had very very very low expectations for TWINE. But the film had me from that first boat chase which is also very underrated. I loved it, and being 13... ya, Denise Richards did not bother me that much.
Sophie Marceau is still my favourite Bond Girl because she's also a Bond Villain and it's one of - if not the most - personal and intimate betrayal of Bond. The dynamic was just so interesting and somehow vulnerable for not just Bond but Elektra too.
I have a feeling that the bond when you grew up is the one you most likely stick with. Luckily we got Brosnan and goldeneye. I can see why people like Craig but he's just too serious and depressed for me.
I love how they gave Denise Richards's character the ridiculous name Christmas just so they could set up the 'I thought Christmas only came once a year' line. Totallly worth it!
It's a very underrated flick IMO. My second favourite of the Brosnan era after GoldenEye. Sophie Marceau's Elektra King is one of my favourite bond girl/villainesses.
I thought this was good. It was a good movie. The script was interesting and made sense. The screenplay good and the action well coordinated. In fact of all Pierce Brosnan movies this was definitely the best. Though I disagree with you both Sophie Marcau and Denise Richards, though quite pretty, could not add anything either in terms of acting or glamour. In fact the lady who appeared briefly in the beginning and money penny left a better impression. The leading ladies were the weak points. Another weak point was that the main villain (or was he the main villain ?) was not given the importance in the script. Also the actor was very unimpressive. seemed like footballer from the Chzeck Republic. This movie needed better casting and it could have been a really good film. BTW this was the only Bond movie I have seen in the theaters.
@@nitehunter91 thing is they didnt give him a chance for a farewell, they pulled the rug from under him and announced a new bond out of nowhere. But the everything or nothing ps2 game a lot of bond fans say thats basically his 5th movie and a pretty good send off.
The elephant in the room is that the audience couldn't wrap their head around a female villain. Love was not a factor, Chris. This was one of my favorite Bond films because the oil plot was grounded, much like GoldenEye satellites. Sophie Marceau sold it for me and this film addresses toxic feminism. After her traumatic past, men became expendable.
Denise Richards as a Nuclear Physicist is like Schwarzenegger in Junior. Pregant Man? Ok. Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Scientist? You've gone too far movie. Outside of Denise Richards I like TWINE.
Sophie Marceau has even done Shakespeare though English isn't her native language. Not a lot of actors in this world I would say deserve to be in the same credits screen as her, and Denise Richards is definitely not one of them.
Tomorrow Never Dies and World is Not Enough are two of my favorite films. I love the 90s tone, the complex plots (World is Not Enough is super complicated), I love Carver and Zukovsky coming back and that weirdly intense scene with Kaufman, and those crazy saw helicopter attacking a caviar house. And Q’s retirement hits me every time, it’s a genuinely great scene, and I love John Cleese as R/Q. He loved the role and it’s a shame he only got two movies before he got fired to simplify the franchise. Still love Ben Whishaw as a modern Q, but miss John.
This Bond film has grown on me in the past few years, it pushes the envelope a bit more by having a Bond girl be the villain. Bond being weakened by an injury and the henchman being one that can't feel pain that's a nice hero/villain dynamic. The action scenes are pretty good but they feel too excessive and not much to advance the story and at times looks like a TV movie. The best scene for me is Q's retirement, "Never let them see you bleed and always have an escape plan!" Not a horrible film but I think it deserves another look amongst the Bond franchise. But if Christmas Jones is a nuclear physicist then I'm Englebert Humperdink!
Lots of people pronounce the "r" in February. Like all non American English speakers, and even some Americans (like me and my family). I don't know why most Americans in recent years have decided to drop that "r", but it used to be that everyone said it, even in America.
Michelle Yeoh was pretty badass in Tomorrow Never Dies though, I honestly enjoy the action sequences in that movie quite a bit. The World is Not Enough didn't do anything for me, but I should give it another watch. Die Another Day, however, was pretty terrible, and I don't expect my opinion to change much on that one, lol. I can't wait for the review for License to Kill though, I just watched it again yesterday. It's easily one of my favorite 80s action movies!
Might be an unpopular opinion. But I LOVE die another day so much 😂 I watched that movie over and over again as a little kid and I recently rewatched it and still love it. I mean, I know it’s bad, the space laser, the invisible car, the bad CGI, the stupid puns ect. But I don’t know Man. I feel like that makes the movie so fucking funny 😂
The scene in which Bond kills Elektra is one of my favourite Bond kills. It's just so cold-blooded while at the same time personal and somewhat even necessary, and Brosnan and Marceau were just great in it, that it is near perfect for me.
Oh my god, Licence to Kill used to be one of my favorite movies when I was a little kid! It was probably the first Bond movie I ever saw, so it has that place in my heart! Can't wait for that review!

I find both Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough to be quite underrated Bond films. Both films got me into Bond at a young age too so there is that special nostalgia attachment to them both.
The relationship between Bond and the Sophie Marceau character is pretty strong. I think it makes the movie, they have great chemistry and you really see that he loves her(see the bed scenes), it's not another sex kitten for him but he has to do what must be done. If you go back to Casino Royale, when Vesper dies, he acts like he doesn't care but he is sad about it. But it's different in the novel because he feels like she betrayed them and it cost people their lives and he feels no remorse. What they did there with Brosnan is very close to book Bond with the woman. It also gave you a different sort of villain for Bond, a different Bond villain because she was soft and tender, was not an action girl.
y'know what, yeah I appreciate the more serious tone this one had. it really is a kind of breath of fresh air for that era to have bond be much darker and aggressive but god the movie drags. TND may have a stupider villain, but he's fun and oddly kinda has a point that controlling the media with 100% authority is a world-changing power move. it's still silly and stupid but it's fun and to me, and it still doesn't get to cartoony levels of Die Another Day. remote control car chase is somehow cool and fun while invisible car with missiles on ice is just stupid. it's a weird balance between cheese and cool that all bond films have to face I guess. I dunno why I'm writing huge essay comments about all this in these reviews. sorry lol. good stuff, man. keep it up
This film is really underrated I can’t believe it has a rotten score on rotten tomatoes. Also how do you not like Elliot Carver he is hilarious in tomorrow never dies whenever he randomly says delicious I have a fit. Also license to kill is the best bond film. Also also spectre you gave higher then this. The worst bond movie over twine not nice man stuck not nice.
License to Kill was poor aside from the final chase scene. Living Daylights was way superior out of Dalton’s 2 and is one of the best bond films made as it was actually a really good spy film that dealt with defection, Cold War and arms dealers.
@@redrum41987 yeah she’s alright. They really just brought her in as eye candy. She’s not even that important to the plot. The one scene she was important in was the bomb in the tube scene. Although even that was marginally important. After that, she’s pretty much just there. They really should’ve made the actress who played Cigar Girl the nuclear physicist and had Denise Richards play the role of Cigar Girl.
The best thing about this movie is its theme song. My all time favorite Bond theme. But I do agree that it feels old fashioned, so much so for me that I keep thinking that it's Brosnan's first Bond movie.
The song is awesome. Perfectly fitting to the franchise but also so very very dark and industrial somehow. Just great great stuff and always overlooked somehow.
How could you miss talking about the mini-ship chase scene at the start. I loved that as a kid and still do. That was one of the most enjoying moment of film.
this one is good, and the evil girl is one of the hottest bond girls ever!, she's so beautiful!!, I don't know what it is, maybe the hair or the eyes, but she's gorgeous!!. also... I think all of brosnan movies are good, some moments can be stupid, but fun stupid.
Unfortunately, "Die Another Day" exists the way it does. Shame. I really liked the begining of that movie. Many critics don't care about the torture credits, but to me it's the first time Bond gets roughly endangered, through scars, torture and shit.
Pls keep talking about some of the older bond movies. It’s pretty entertaining to watch a huge fan like yourself talk about them as someone who’s kinda too young to watch most of them.
A severely underrated Bond film. I actually thinks it’s a bit better than Goldeneye. From the great locations, the not overly done camera work, the great villains, a darker Bond, dialogue and a story that never gets boring, a great Bond song by Garbage, and a great score from David Arnold, this movie is the complete package. I really don’t get the hate for this film. They kept things simple and made it work. It has gotten better over time and will stand out as one of the great James Bond films for years to come.
This is easily my second favorite Brosnan Bond film. I found it to be very underrated the story with Electra being the villain, manipulating Bond, Renard and others was a nice change of pace for the series. You're definitely right it is a rather dark Bond movie and I'd say this is my one of my favorite performances of Bond by Brosnan.
Sophie Marceau is one of the most beautiful actresses that have ever existed and for sure my very first Bond Girl crush. Also the Garbage theme for the movie was amazing. Glad that you gave respect to this movie and that really looking forward to your review of License to Kill.
To be fair to Denise Richards, she wasn’t cast for her acting skills. Yes, her performance was bad, but she’s there to be eye candy, and she definitely was. She was in her absolute prime at that point and never ruined the movie for me.
@@ernievzla Yeah, but honestly Sophie Marceau had the far more compelling character depth. You needed at least a decent actress to play that part for it to be effective. Denise Richards was just the pretty tag along who was there to give some information to Bond every now and then and then have sex with him at the end of the movie. I don't think her lack of acting skills really effected my enjoyment of the movie at all.
I think if someone kidnaps you and you end up sleeping with them it's fine to call it Stockholm syndrome. Her "turning" him probably would never have happened if he didn't I assume rape her, and it certainly wouldn't have happened if he hadn't kidnapped her in the first place
@@Powd3r81 Stockholm syndrome, psychological response wherein a captive begins to identify closely with his or her captors, as well as with their agenda and demands. @@PurushaDesa There are Bond girls and Femme Fatales, the first category ends up being an ally (but can start as a villain) while the second category ends as a villain (but at first we can think they are an ally)
Space Ace That's quite a silly distinction because it imposes arbitrary rules that discount a plethora of femme fatales throughout the history of cinema. The only requirement is that they're seductive and have their own, often secret, agenda. It would be kind of odd to argue that Jessica Rabbit isn't a femme fatale simply because she's one of the heroes of the film, when her defining attribute is her seductiveness.

Regardless, I'm enjoying these reviews of older films. Thank you!
TWINE is definitely an interesting Bond film to discuss. It has some really good things going for it and one really bad thing that almost ruins it all. The villains are really solid. I love how they play with the formula and twist things around, placing the apparent main villain in the henchman role and the leading lady in the role of the main villain. Women have been villains in the series in the past but this was the first time that one was placed as the top mastermind behind it all. That's the only thing that I see differently is that I really got the impression that she was the alpha in the relationship with Renard. Bond even said at one point "so you turned Renard". So he may have started off as being in control but she eventually turned him into a puppet. I mean he was willing to die to give her everything that she wanted. So I don't think she ever was actually in love with Renard and was only using him for her own agenda. I also really enjoyed her relationship with Bond as she kind of got under his armor. Sadly Denise Richards was just very miscast in this and her scenes weigh it all down. Yeah though, this was a good review.
I love the opening of the film. It has one of my favorite pre-title sequences. I like the over-all plot. I like Sophie's character, a lot. What I don't like is fairly minimal: I don't like the score and I don't like Denise Richards' character, nor her performance. It wouldn't matter who was playing that character, though. I thought the film should have really gone for it and had Sophie as the lone Bond girl. But all things considered, this is by far my second favorite Brosnan Bond, after GoldenEye. Also, Michael Apted directed none of the action scenes. It was completely second unit.

Goodshag Productions it took me like three times to work out what TWINE meant 🤦🏾♂️
Chris, please review OCTOPUSSY!!!
Awesome movie!!
One of best of Roger Moore Bond

Sophie Marceau is still my favourite Bond Girl because she's also a Bond Villain and it's one of - if not the most - personal and intimate betrayal of Bond. The dynamic was just so interesting and somehow vulnerable for not just Bond but Elektra too.
IKR! Many dismiss this excellent drama within this film.
"World is not enough" has one of my favourite bond themes, not only is the song damn good but the video for it is really fun.

My first Bond movie and still one my personal favourites, Pierce Brosnan wil always be my favourite Bond.
Same.
Mine was goldeneye but this is still in my top only film to knock those two from their pedestal was Skyfall
@@negimaaddict742 Skyfall was good, way better compared to Spectre. But definitely one of Craig's best performances.
I felt like that until Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale...
I wish Brosnan had a better farewell from the role.
TWINE really shows what he and his era came for.
That’s so true in the real world.

Denise Richards as a Nuclear Physicist is like Schwarzenegger in Junior. Pregant Man? Ok. Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Scientist? You've gone too far movie.
Outside of Denise Richards I like TWINE.
100% with you on this
This made me chuckle.
Sophie Marceau has even done Shakespeare though English isn't her native language. Not a lot of actors in this world I would say deserve to be in the same credits screen as her, and Denise Richards is definitely not one of them.
I like to think Denise Richards was cast because of her performance in Wild Things.
Funny, her hotness is the only memorable and kind of enjoyable thing about this movie. For me.
Brosnans middle-two films also have amazing music. Anyone reading this who hasn't heard the soundtracks, I highly recommend!
1:56... Stuckmann rhymes beautifully
This movie was my favorite James Bond movie
really
This Bond film has grown on me in the past few years, it pushes the envelope a bit more by having a Bond girl be the villain. Bond being weakened by an injury and the henchman being one that can't feel pain that's a nice hero/villain dynamic. The action scenes are pretty good but they feel too excessive and not much to advance the story and at times looks like a TV movie. The best scene for me is Q's retirement, "Never let them see you bleed and always have an escape plan!"
Not a horrible film but I think it deserves another look amongst the Bond franchise. But if Christmas Jones is a nuclear physicist then I'm Englebert Humperdink!
The more he says “nucular” instead of “nuclear” my soul dies a little.
Reminds me of George w bush
By this point, I just assume anyone saying "nucular" is saying it ironically, or trolling. Don't care if I'm wrong; I'm trying to save my sanity :)
@@ARZiehm that is entirely false

Lots of people pronounce the "r" in February. Like all non American English speakers, and even some Americans (like me and my family). I don't know why most Americans in recent years have decided to drop that "r", but it used to be that everyone said it, even in America.
Glad you are doing “License to Kill” next! Curious to see your thoughts on that one! Timothy Dalton is always great. 👍
Dalton was great in both of his movies
Chris has already said in an earlier video that it is one of his fave bonds
His best bond movie
Michelle Yeoh was pretty badass in Tomorrow Never Dies though, I honestly enjoy the action sequences in that movie quite a bit. The World is Not Enough didn't do anything for me, but I should give it another watch. Die Another Day, however, was pretty terrible, and I don't expect my opinion to change much on that one, lol. I can't wait for the review for License to Kill though, I just watched it again yesterday. It's easily one of my favorite 80s action movies!
Michelle Yeoh is the only shining light in a very mediocre movie. Carver was a terrible villain as was Stamper his generic henchman.
I know right. For me its one of the best scenes in the whole series. Also love that M is a silent witness.

"I never miss" is up there with "You've had your six" for coldest kill to me.
My vote would go to “Yes. Considerably”
@@r520jr8 That one too. The quick cut to his family photo took it up a notch.
y'know what, yeah I appreciate the more serious tone this one had. it really is a kind of breath of fresh air for that era to have bond be much darker and aggressive but god the movie drags. I dunno why I'm writing huge essay comments about all this in these reviews. sorry lol. good stuff, man. keep it up

dattebenforcer license to kill is epic
License to Kill was poor aside from the final chase scene. Living Daylights was way superior out of Dalton’s 2 and is one of the best bond films made as it was actually a really good spy film that dealt with defection, Cold War and arms dealers.
Both Dalton films suck. They don't feel like Bond movies.
You people are disrespectful to Dalton how dare you

Although even that was marginally important. After that, she’s pretty much just there. They really should’ve made the actress who played Cigar Girl the nuclear physicist and had Denise Richards play the role of Cigar Girl.
The best thing about this movie is its theme song. My all time favorite Bond theme.
But I do agree that it feels old fashioned, so much so for me that I keep thinking that it's Brosnan's first Bond movie.

@@PurushaDesa There are Bond girls and Femme Fatales, the first category ends up being an ally (but can start as a villain) while the second category ends as a villain (but at first we can think they are an ally)

That's quite a silly distinction because it imposes arbitrary rules that discount a plethora of femme fatales throughout the history of cinema. The only requirement is that they're seductive and have their own, often secret, agenda.

I don't like it when people say "nuke - u - lar" instead of "nuke - lee - ar". It reminds me of George W. Bush
More like "noo-clear" but yeah I agree. It drives me nuts. It happens far too often.
