      @@spaceodds1985 Apparently at the time of Goldeneye's production there was a rumour that Dalton was asked back for Goldeneye and declined, as it had been 5 years since Licence To kill's production had finished and Dalton thought for a new decade there should be a new Bond.
      But it would have been great to have Dalton in Goldeneye he's my favourite Bond. Licence To kill was the first Bond film I saw in the cinema. My father and brother had to try and hide me while going through the cinema screen door from the usher as the film was rated 15 in the U.K. as I was only 10 years old at the time in 1989 and taking someone below the age rating is not allowed in the U.K.

      Jay jay's World brosnan was not that dark, he was just action action action. He had his dark moments but I think that’s because he was more of an action bond. His era of movies were more towards action than story or character development. Not bashing the Brosnan, his movies were good popcorn flicks, but I personally like Sean Connery, Daniel craig and dalton

    • @brucesnow7125
      @brucesnow7125 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's underrated because at the time people were confused. They were so used to Bond being humorous and over the top, that a darker Bond felt jarring to them. They clearly didn't know that this is how Fleming envisioned Bond, so they wrote Dalton off as a knock-off of more serious action heroes. Then, these mediocre reviews stopped majority of people from watching it.
      Nowadays, Bond fans in particular are starting to see that this Bond was ahead of his time. I'm happy to see that LD and LTK are getting love that they deserve.

      It depends which book, because like the films they veer abruptly in tone. But the books where Fleming gives us a cynical Bond who's fed up and ready to snap, Dalton captures that perfectly. Better even than Craig in my opinion, though Craig is very good and a big improvement on Brosnan who I never really fell in love with. He was fine, but a bit vanilla and he looked more like a catalogue model than a guy who could beat you to death with your own shoes.

    Remember in The Living Daylights when he says “If he [M] fires me, I’ll thank him for it”... well Ladies and Gentlemen meet James Bond, the anti hero that Fleming created, a man of cynicism, intelligence and contradictions. An assassin who hates cold blooded murder, yet takes pride in his job. A man who has to be cold hearted, and yet is filled with rage and anger when a friend or ally is dealt a death blow. In Living Daylights when he thanks Saunders at the Prater Cafe, you see the gratitude, and then when Saunders is killed he is horrified and sad, but when Bond sees the balloon with the words Smiert Spionem... the rage he displays shows his humanity. Not one Bond can do that. Dalton IMO made Bond a flawed and interesting character.

Living Daylights also has one of my favorite fights in any Bond film...awesome henchman/assassin Necros vs the British safe house servant. That sequence is so well staged and brutal looking. I remember reading in Tom Soter's "Bond and Beyond: 007 And Other Special Agents" how License To Kill was actually supposed to star Mel Gibson, the Producers fashioned a Bond Flick with Joel Silver type Lethal Weapon action and mayhem, they even signed Michael Kamen (who did the score to the Lethal Weapon 2) to score License to Kill. The idea was to get Gibson to guide the Bond Franchise into the 90's, which explains the Lethal Weapon type violence you see in License to Kill. The Sharkey character would've been played by Danny Glover had Mel Gibson gotten the 007 part, making his death that much more important. Don't know who would've played Felix Leiter (Carl Weathers?) .... I also read somewhere how even though he had been signed for a multiple picture deal, Dalton wasn't a lock to repeat as Bond, eventually Gibson passed on the project forcing the Producers to go back to Dalton to portray Bond.

    @FullArcher05 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the public would've been more ready for Dalton's take on Bond if he had started with the first 80s Bond film, For Your Eyes Only. If you take a look at all the actors besides Dalton and Moore, and Lazenby because he got one film, you'll notice most of their films were from a certain decade and at least one was from the next. For example: Connery, most of his films were from the 60s, but his last movie came out in 1971. Pierce Brosnan, three of his films were from the 90s, and Die Another Day was in 2002. Daniel Craig, while having played Bond for two decades, his last film is coming out during the beginning of 2020, a new decade. Moore and Dalton are the outliers here because Moore continued into the 80s and I'm pretty sure that diverted people's expectations for a new actor they have to get used to playing Bond. In short, Timothy's Bond had no room to grow because of Moore's.

Licence took chances with the formula and has aged well for it. Great review, Chris. @@rjmacready9828 yeah keep telling yourself that buddy everybody knows Sean hates James Bond and only did it for the money and pierce as good as goldeneye was is just a mix of Connery and Moore he didn’t have his own version
      Out of all the bonds dalton was the most balanced one he wasn’t too serious like Craig or too funny like Moore he was smack dab in the middle and unlike you he respects what the others did before him but didn’t want to copy them because their way was definitely showing it’s age

      @@mohammedashian8094 lol, as a Dalton fan you're the last to talk about everybody's opinion. Last time I checked, "everybody knows" that Connery is a cinematic icon and that Brosnan was universally loved and was Bond for an entire generation of fans. Its not a coincidence that Dalton got the boot after 2 movies 😬😬

      @@rjmacready9828 actually he didn’t get the boot HE walked out on his own terms after the lawsuit was settled they asked him to come back and he said he was gonna come back for only one more but because of the time gap they were like “you can’t do that you HAVE to 2 or 3 more.” But he said no and left.
      And I was speaking objectively on Sean and pierce I know pierce is universally loved but realistically speaking his scripts did get worse. Sean IS a cinematic icon but that doesn’t mean he wanted to do it forever and had a good reason for it. You can Google it and see that he hated James Bond

    I rewatched all the Bond movies in 2019 and Dalton's films (whom I hadn't heard of or seen until then) ended up being two more of my favorite Bond movies. I love the style here and I bet some niche, classic anime took influence from them specifically.
    I feel it

    I've always thought this was one of the most underrated Bond films, even way back when I was a kid and got the box set on VHS. I was also a big Brosnan fanboy, courtesy of Goldeneye, but even so I still thought Dalton was awesome.

    Good review, Dalton is my favourite Bond . . . and Connery was my first Bond. Shame he couldn’t have done more films.

    Speaking of creepy: when the thunder struck during your intro I got the most realistic surround sound experience! Then I remembered that I only had ONE headphone in, but I was hearing it clearly in BOTH ears! A thunderstorm popped up here while I wasn't paying attention.
    The thunder couldn't have timed it better!

    Dalton is still my favourite iteration of the character. Living Daylights was essentially a bond movie version of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the last time there's a stand-up fight between MI6 and the Soviets. Hoping we get a review of that

    Has anyone seen the “uncut” workprint version of The Living Daylights? Apparently it’s much better than the official release.

      ImBateman I only saw the gun barrel. It’s Dalton doing a jump like Bob Simmons did in the first three Connery films

    I love your videos! Hope you and your family are well and wish you the best going forward.

    My favorite James Bond film. Such shame Dalton wasn't in Goldeneye to complete a trilogy...
