Great review of yet another one of William Grefé's low-budget gems. I also appreciate how Mark once again praises the good stuff (in this case, the underwater footage) along with the bad. BTW, the director's crowning achievement is a movie called "Impulse" (1974), where William "Captain Kirk" Shatner gives the absolute worst - but also most hilarious - performance of his long career, playing a deranged psychopath who robs and kills lonely women. It's an absolute must for any bad movie fan (and devoted Trekkies), and would therefore be perfect for Mark's review skills (wink, wink). Shatner's performance is so over-the-top it has to be seen to be believed. He also wears some of the ugliest clothes of all time! Incidentally, Harold "Odd Job" Sakata is in it as well, playing against type.

The lore of Sonny’s necklace makes me confusion.
The sharks in the Philippines didn’t attack him so the mystical Filipino Shark shaman gave Sonny the mystical Filipino shark proof necklace.
So now when Sonny was Eco murdering fishermen he was safe among the sharks with the necklace on.
But then at the end when he dropped the necklace and fell into a shark party he was killed. For not wearing the necklace?
But he wasn’t wearing the necklace in that first attack in the Philippines and the sharks left him alone.
Maybe the mystical Filipino shark power was within Sonny all along as long as he believed in himself. The necklace was like Dumbo’s feather. So when Sonny was ripped apart by sharks at the end it was because he stopped believing in himself.
Anybody else need closure on this?

Richard Jaeckel's Sonny was the protagonist antihero & in the final scene I believe he took the necklace off deliberately & wanted the sharks to devour him. He had lost faith in mankind & their hatred of sharks, and also knew he was trapped knowing he was wanted for mass murders.
So consider it a suicide. I once believed when I 1st saw the film in '76 that his medallion fell off on accident during the fight scenes. Yet on future viewings seeing how distraught & hopeless he acted, & jumping feet 1st down the floor hatch I felt much different. His last words were "I'm coming home." Perhaps in his mind he would go home to a shark eternity being one with the sharks.

Jaeckel had such a knack for a frozen fatal side stare. I remember feeling bad for him as a kid when it looked as if he was going to survive the grizzly, but it didn't happen and he had that frozen stare as it started coming toward him to finish him off.
Btw, how'd they cast the role of that woman, put out an announcement for an older stunt woman underwater swimmer that can't act?

Great episode, love the film! If you want to have the Richard Jaeckel trifecta of that time. You need to watch Day of the Animals. He's great in that too. Or Blood Song. He's more a supporting character in it. But he plays a great prick of an alcoholic father.

  • @oneopinion6806

Wild! So, for moments like 13:54 how were they doing those in a movie of this era? It's clearly an actual shark, but doesn't look like classic animal fights where it's dead/stuffed. Did they yank out all of a live shark's teeth?! The eyes even roll closed during the bite. Or did they somehow rig up a dead shark with an internal mechanism to puppet it's mouth? Again, wild!
EDIT: This dude was a fictional prototype for Timothy Treadwell.
EDIT2: Played a lot of Golden Eye. We most often had on License to Kill. MoonRaker Elite Lady was also short like Oddjob but with the yellow suit she was far less of a threat. We actually banned Arctic Commando eventually as with the low-res his mottled gray blended with many walls.
