      @@Nirual nah, Jan isn't the one cruising for an innocent woman to kill for her body. She just wants to finish dying, and the only people she kills are the ones who won't let her die. She's in control of the monster, remember, whose last act we see is to carry Doris away from the burning lab so she's not killed. I think that makes her considerably better than her erstwhile fiance.

    You know, even though I agree that this movie is ripe for mockery, I also find it strangely compelling, even moving. After all, under all the sleaziness and campiness, it DOES address a serious subject - that you shouldn't experiment with Nature, even if you're a gifted surgeon.
    I also thought it was a cruel irony that beautiful Doris, so bitter and resentful that she hates all men for what they did to her, not only decides to trust one again (whose only purpose is to butcher her), but also ends up being saved by the only good man she ever encountered... who turns out to be a disfigured monster. What tough luck, huh? So there was actually great potential here for deep drama, but it's lost in the cheapness of the production.
    Oh, and once again, thank you for pointing out the technical excellence on such a low-budget exploitation outing.

    • @edisonlima4647
      @edisonlima4647 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      There is also something mixed in this whole story about the symbolical and LITERAL objectification of women, be their bodies or Jane's desires on the matter being completely ignored.
      It gets muddled all the way by the sleaziness, but it is there.

    • @ScreamingScallop
      @ScreamingScallop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Doris even relates a story about Bill beating the hell out of a guy who harassed her, tapping the "but I'm a nice guy" trope _and_ revealing that Bill's always had a penchant for violence, mistaken for heroism. And intentionally or not, the movie's an allegory about the danger of depriving women of autonomy over their bodies. Two scenes really stood out to me: at 12:51 Donna's reaction tells us she deals with stalking and harassment _all the time,_ and at 16:41 the act of taping Jan's mouth sent me from "he's an evil guy but I can _almost_ understand him" to "OH F#@% YOU, BUDDY."
      I'm honestly surprised no one's remade this. It seems like the perfect fodder for a Charles/Richard Band knockoff, even sleazier and gorier, with Bill's Dad coming home early only to get his skull splattered (either by the Closet Monster or Bill himself) and the whole "the Closet Monster represents Bill's Id" thing made a little more obvious.
      LOL I swear our introduction to Dr. Stephen Strange in the MCU is 100% based on our introduction to Bill in _The Brain That Wouldn't Die._

    • @guida-walker-channel
      @guida-walker-channel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@edisonlima4647 Absolutely! Funny how there is so much philosophical material to explore under the guise of exploitation. At the same time, we're left wondering if the director or writer actually had such subjects in mind but didn't care enough to go deeper or if we (the audience) are just reading too much into it. In any case, it makes for an interesting and relevant debate.

    • @guida-walker-channel

      @@ScreamingScallop I'm sure the makers of this movie never in a million years imagined people would be dissecting it to the point where it almost becomes a treatise on the Plight of Women! As for the remake, I just discovered there is actually a very recent one, but looking at the trailer, it appears to be nothing but a scene-by-scene parody on the original, only in color. Kind of a wasted opportunity, if that's the case.

    I've always been impressed by the film quality of The Head/Brain that Wouldn't Die. The clarity is better than some movies from the '70's. Am I the only one that thinks Doris is kickass? I really like Doris more now than when I first saw this movie in 1966. Notice how the incidental banter between Bill and the women is very well done, like when Donna gets in the car and says, "I promise I won't bite", and Bill gives a very natural laugh. That monster's appearance gave me a flashback to "I Was A Teenage Frankenstein". One of the very first movies I can remember. Right after Saturday morning cartoons on the UHF channels, Dr Shock's Horror Theater, which 8 year old me was not allowed to be watching at all! Nightmares for quite awhile.

    5:37 The "country house" is actually the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York. Some of the street scenes were shot in Fort Lee, New Jersey. It was made in 1959 but held until 1962 when it was released as part of an AIP double feature, and you can see the entire film on Wikipedia because the producers fouled up the copyright notice, so it has been in the public domain since 1962.

      ("AIP" is Samuel Z. Arkoff's American Independent Pictures. Arkoff produced over 200 films in his career.)

    As ODD as this movie is, I find it entertaining to watch for some reason. I like films like this that are SIMPLE, aren't overloaded with stupid special effects, stupid camera work, and stupid and copious subplots that drag the movie out longer than it should be.

    Probably the weirdest thing about this movie is the fact that it's called "The Brain that wouldn't Die" but the end title card calls it "The Head that wouldn't Die".
