As far as installation, no. As far as performance, yes, surprisingly so. Throttle tip-in is noticeably more firm, and throttle response is much, much better - to a point where I’m no longer contemplating a “throttle commander” type device. I don’t feel things are any faster, but quicker for sure. The air intake is louder too; I’d say 50-60% more “whooshy.” - Mike
I'd keep the OEM for warranty work (if needed) and swap them back and forth. I wouldn't cut the charcoal filter for the reasons you already mentioned. Now, where did you order from? I'm looking online and shipping is $70+. Also, a few of the sites look dodgy. Thanks
Shipping can get pricey out of japan; $60 -$70 isn't uncommon to get parts to mainland US. If you're in the market for other JDM items that can spread the cost out a bit more. I ordered the airbox from: www.rhdjapan.com/oem-public-page/?brand=Toyota&partnumber=SU003-10480
I actually just installed the JDM airbox myself, but for some reason, I can't seem to get the MAF sensor seated perfectly into the new JDM airbox. The screws are straight and appear to be as far in as they'd go (I tightened them down by hand with a screwdriver) but the MAF can still wiggle a bit in place. Did you run into any similar problems? Or is your sensor perfectly tight in the airbox?
Mine is snug as a bug. Check that the MAF is facing the correct direction (arrow on top pointing to throttle body). The screws also have tiny washers...I don't believe they can be removed but is worth checking.
@@KonkrRoads MAF sensor is facing the correct direction and the "washers" on the screws are just part of the head. It's possible that I just need to use a bit more force since I'm essentially creating the threads with the original screws..
Yes, surprisingly so. Throttle tip-in is noticeably more firm, and throttle response is much, much better - to a point where I’m no longer contemplating a “throttle commander” type device. 100% yes. I doubt there's a better mod for money...JDM charcoal-free airbox + the HKS filter is an easy win. The throttle response increase still surprises me. 🤙
Just buy the USDM one just cut out the Charcoal part of the old one. Why buy a JDM one if its just the Charcoal thats the difference? Is there a price difference?
I went with the JDM unit so I didn't have to cut a filter out and clean it well enough that my engine didn't suck any fibers into the engine. For $36+ shipping it made sense to me. I'm not sure of the USDM part price, but it's likely more expensive having more material.
I ordered mine from RHDjapan for $36 + shipping. To order is a bit tricky; you have to establish an account and then request the part quote--you'll get a quote via email and then you can purchase. The part number is SU003-09558. www.rhdjapan.com/oem-public-page/ It's doubtful you'll find a US Vendor as this is a unique JDM (and Europe & Aussie) part.
@@KonkrRoadsWhen requesting the part quote, the website says not purchasable via RHDJapan, unfortunately. Maybe they’re out of parts or aren’t able to ship to the US because it’s an emissions bypass?
If Subaru or Toyota can link the engine issue with the loss of the filter, then yes. However I don't see how the removal of this filter would cause engine problems; the increase of airflow is minimal and the original JDM factory design did not have it to start with. A chance we all take I suppose.
Did you personally notice any differences when swapping out the airbox?

Also want to know if there’s any power difference or better intake sounds?
And is there any chance of a dyno test?

Does the HKS filter require any “maintenance”? Are there any “maintenance-free” filters for this airbox?
No maintenance required. But, a swap at the proper time is needed
