Would like to know if you can do a video on what steps you take to self check the condition of a card to determine whether it’s worthy to send in for grading
I have the fi-7030. I mainly sell Pokemon, Yugioh, and Magic cards. Scanning unsleeved causes scratches. Scanning them sleeved works if you take the wheel out, otherwise they get jammed. I have to wipe the scanner about every 100-200 cards or it will start to produce lines in the scan. It's way faster than manually uploading, but it is tedious in its own way. Sometimes it catches the sleeve, takes it off and scratches the card. Using tight fitting sleeves fixed this. Some sports cards I've scanned were slick and would catch the sleeve anyways. Putting them in upside down with the sleeve opening face down worked without damaging the cards. Keep up the good vids JMac!
I bought a little catcher off of eBay and it came with two things to prob up the scanner. 10/10 would buy another 8170 again. Don’t have the Prizm or select scanning well but everything else is golden.
I bought the epson, it works great but it really struggles with anything thick at all. It also has the print lines on them all. Does the 8170 leave any lines? And what pt cards would you say is the biggest it can handle? Thanks
Yeah Epson can really only do regular stock cards, 8170 doesnt leave lines in my experience thus far and on their website it says "Scans documents up to 7 mm, including IDs and pamphlets." 7mm is 1/4 inch.
Now here is my question? I went straight for the Ricoh FI-8170, do you have a video on how to take the wheel out you were talking about? Also used your code for Card Dealer Pro!
Lot of the content I saw referenced a lot of concentrating on "PC" collecting rather than picking up cards to "Flip". So, I agree with you, I thought a lot of that was refreshing to hear and see.
This is the first time I’ve ever commented it on a video. I very much enjoy your content and you seem like a genuine dude. That being said. I bought this scanner on your recommendation. It scratched the hell out of the front of the cards, wrinkles the penny sleeve and chews up the semi rigid. Is there something I’m doing wrong?? I removed the wheel and clean it often.
do you scan raw cards then? i don't see how onecan do toploader unless the toploader is brand spanking new so no marks that will be mistaken for the card. I guess that's the ticket lol? i use "used" toploaders basically. Also, did you take out the roller bc seems it auto feeds without doing that. Thank you!
Went to my first National, enjoyed it and ready for next year. Dealers were not afraid to come off asking prices. I was able to make several deals buying multiple cards. Steel City had sealed wax boxes $20 off from their eBay and store pricing so I grabbed a few hard to finds. Really enjoy your videos and hope you continue your journey with this. Hope your eye heals well. Happy collecting!
@JMacSportsCards I just got the fi-8040 and I have a lot of chrome/finest cards and they are so dark in the scans, basically unusable. Is that the same with 8170 scanner as well? I can’t find anything on if I can brighten the image or not.
I bought a FI-8170 last week after using a 7030 for several months. I wanted something that could scan penny sleeves and top loaders. After removing the wheel, it works great but I’ve noticed that there is a thin line on the surface facing up. I believe it is a guide or something in the machine but don’t know know to adjust it. Have you had similar issues? Thanks for the video.
I have been playing with it and turning them every which way to get the best scans, my experience is top loaders/semi rigid just turn out the best scans overall. Penny sleeves are hit or miss on all the scanners with having lines on them, just no avoiding it.
Search Maxwax 8170 on youtube. He created a 3d-printed feeder that does not damage the card. Sells them for cheap and works great. Also has videos on removing the wheel and then not using top loaders as it can scratch the glass on the scanner (puts print lines on the scans) and ruins a 1k scanner. Only use penny sleeves.
I'm considering getting an 8170 but would like to know how many cards does the standard auto feeder that comes with it can hold for penny sleeved and toploaded? For example, can it hold 40 penny sleeved cards in one go and 25 toploaded? Essentially, if you wanted to fully load the autoloader with either penny sleeved or toploaders, how of each would it hold? This is a question for the standard feeder that comes with it not the 3rd party giant loader.
Brotha Jmac, thanks for the vid. Toying with the 8170 and even though I "microfiber" the cards, the scanner is so good it picks up speckles/speck debris - have you found the software setting to "clean" those off (as they are not flaws!)?
I have just purchased the fi-8170 and I have scanned with penny sleeves, and it has small marks on each card. Have I missed something? I was assuming that I could scan with a penny sleeves without damage to the cards. I appreciate the help and love the content!
I bought the epson and the top loaders really held me up. Unfortunately I went with the 8040 900 price tag was a little too rich for me lmao but sold the epson and upgraded. I'll let you know how it goes over the weekend. (Hasn't arrived yet)😊
Hey JMAC, I used your code when I signed up FYI. Thanks! Any troubles on your end with 1985 topps getting the backs to scan? No matter what I seem to change in paper-stream, I cant get the green backs to scan and so Im stuck with putting them in card dealer pro.... Any guidance would be welcome.
So im more inclined to make the move to that scanner. I got the Epson ES-400 and its good for paper cards BUT i take pics of my chrome cards. In your words does the FI-8170 work WELL with chrome cards AND can it work well with cards in penny sleeves vs top loaders. With close to 10,000 cards still to list i dont have 10,000 top loaders :)
Great vid. Hey, I miss ya! Post more frequently please. Been seeing same thing as U on prices at Natl. one channel’s content creator was repeatedly getting 20 to 35 percent knocked off asking, it seems. The more he dug in, the more easily they bent.
God bless you sir! I hope that your eye heals well, and there's no problems with it from here out. I'm a nurse first, so I want to say there are some things more important than cards out there. Lol. I'm a Cleveland fan, so it's hard to go back too far to get any players that are worth collecting. Lol. I bought some Chubbs off if you, and I've been trying to get more, because I think he's still the best RB in the league, but I can't bring myself to buy any cards of "massage boy". Lol. I saw that Muhammad card you had...did you see his burger restaurant went under? I guess I can say that Young is going to be a good one too, but I'm all over CJ Stroud this year! Gotta go check on my bbq, but I hope you have a great evening, and that you take care of yourself, because I, and a lot of others really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks!
Thanks for the well wishes, its healing ahead of schedule and seems like no lingering issues to speak of (vision is fine, whew...). Yeah I hear you on massage man, I have that same issue with my Hornets (Miles Bridges) his stuff got extremely cheap but I bought zero cards, cant do it!
JMac: Thank you for the demo of the FI 8170! If you compare the FI 8170 with the one you tested earlier (FI 8040) what do you think are the shortcomings of the FI 8040? For example is there things that you can do in one and not in the other or in other words what the extra $2-300 for FI 8170 gets us? My 2-nd question is regarding the wheel that you took out from the FI 8170 but doesn't need to be taken out on FI 8040; What will happen if we keep the wheel in? Is the presence of the wheel just going to limit the thickness of what we can scan or the scanner will start to "chew" the penny sleeve (like the Epson ES 400 II likes to do with the wheel present) ?
fi-8040 doesn't do cards in just penny sleeves well (for whatever reason), it does fine with cards in top loaders/semi rigid so to me having the flexibility to scan any card in any holder (basically) totally makes the fi-8170 well worth spending up for if you can make it happen.
JMAC, as always, thanks brotha. how the eye is doing okay. And hope to see you at teh National next year. Now dealer prices will always be stickered insane. Always have been always will be. You just have to be willing to make the right offer regardless of sticker and there are dealers that get it and will take the deal. If not, jut move on to the next table. haha
What scanner do you recommend for cards that are refractor, holo, silve, reflective etc etc. I own the FI-8170 and it's terrible for reflective cards. That being said I am impressed with its speed. I see scans with the v600 that look incredible, bright and show the reflective aspect perfectly. I am not so much concerned with speed as I am accuracy so with the card dealer pro being able to recognize and separate the different cards from a single scan and save them as separate files, you could go through some high end cards fairly quick without having to spend hours adjusting settings and creating templates and profiles for every single color and type of reflective card ya know.. Love the videos thanks again!
"End all, be all" scanner? Maybe if your world is raw cards only. Graded cards need a different type of scanner. Impressive the way it pushed through that stack of cards. I would be worried about damage to cards in penny sleeves. As you demonstrated, sometimes this scanner jams two together.

Yeah saw a lot of the same, which like you said is very "refreshing"
Hi JMac,
Did you figure a way to add extra space around the card borders? (i.e. similarly to the way it was possible on Epson ES-400)
Thank you Jason for sharing your knowledge and being a good steward of the hobby. I really appreciate all your feedback and help.
I appreciate that!
