My biggest issues with money are impulse spending, and becoming obsessed with items online. If I see something I like, I can't stop thinking about it and then I have to have it. My entire home is full of stuff I had to have, and now I'm trying to get rid of a lot. Also I never shop after the holidays anymore, because of all the clearance sales. It's just too tempting 😔
My 9 year old has no clue about money but he puts his pocket money he gets in his piggy Bank. I've explained if he wants something he should maybe keep half the money incase he wants something but he doesn't really understand.💙🏴
This is literally me. I just recently stumbled on ASD and ADHD videos. I’ve never thought of myself as someone on the spectrum so I just wanted to watch videos that raised my knowledge about human behaviour and psychology. It’s a topic I enjoy. What I didn’t expect was to resonate with almost every speaking point in the videos. I’ve spent the past 24 hrs now mostly watching and learning about these shared experiences that I’ve always thought weren’t shared experiences. So here I am wondering if I’ve had undiagnosed autism or ADHD my entire life and I’m now 29 yrs old. I’ve always had a habit of not buying anything unless I’m super interested in the topic. My parents when I was young would say I was an easy child to take care of because I didn’t want things kids normally want, like candy or toys. When I did develop an interest though, it was in books and music. I would constantly ask my parents to buy books and music for me and I’d have mini meltdowns if they said no. Now as an adult I have an intense interest in K-pop and I collect photocards that I buy impulsively if I like it and sometimes they can be hundreds of dollars for paper but my brain is literally just like “you need that in your collection, it has to be compete.” I just thought I was a little obsessive because people online always talk about being obsessed with something. But then I would look around me and nobody had that same type of obsession even if they did like certain things. These videos recently have been opening up my eyes and reading all these comments I find myself nodding in agreement. It’s like something has finally clicked. I cried yesterday because it felt like I finally knew why I felt so other my whole life.
Thanks for making this video! It's so helpful to understand the challenges. We recently discovered an autistic relative is in e 30s struggling with money. It was revealed only because e was recently scammed on the phone by a person impersonating the police demanding personal banking information. I am now helping with budgeting and finding creative ways to help educate. I think finances in our day and age can get overwhelming when our mind is wired to constantly want things. sad that hard earned money was lost but the silver lining is we now know that help is needed and will try our best to intervene.
Thank you for your video. My 14 year old grandson is on the lower spectrum of autism & aspergers. I know money will be an issue & with his mother's help, he's very reliant on her. I also know that he will be living with her going into adult life bc they are very close... he's such a beautiful boy.. he's always grateful & i thank you again for your videos.
Glad to see I'm not alone on this issue. I've curved my spending habits by just window shopping on line and if it's something that I think I would really enjoy, I put it on a wish list instead so I can go back and see if I am still interested in that item. This has personally been helping me, don't know if this method would work for anyone else.
Yes, I find this strategy very helpful as well. I keep a "wishlist" bookmark folder. It's always interesting when I look back at what things I am still interested in and other things I'm like "No, that is rubbish why did I ever think I wanted that??? 🤦🏻♀️" haha
I wish this kind of thing worked for me, I'll put it into a wishlist or a saved file. But then I'll end up staring at it and then buying it after thinking about it for an entire day.
This hit home so hard! Somehow I've never got into debt or forgotten to pay bills, but forgetting how much I've spend and prioritising what I want right now vs what I need/will want in the future is so difficult. My family keeps suggesting I practice investing etc and I have to laugh like, do you realise how difficult it is to get the book 1 page 1 of financial management right? Can't be doing with the stock market. 😅 Close relatives sometimes say 'how do you have so few savings?' or 'surely you should have more money than that?!' and all I can say is ikr I'm at a loss too!
My hyper focuse is personal finance and becoming financially independent from a career. :) I really enjoy not only saving money but letting my money work for me through real estate and my stock portoflio. At the end of the day even though I really enjoy taking my finances, I have to compartmentalize it or else I'll get so stressed out. I am honestly wanting to start a finance/life based youtube channel in the future.
I just reached my FIRE number 8 weeks ago 😀 one of my ideas is to start a YT channel about it in the future 😀 I still keep working though because work is another special interest. But I'm taking January and February off 😊
I made a video in my native language about my financial decisions and I felt happy about it. My video wasn’t that interesting but for me I liked recording it and having it as a reference for me too.
It especially gets spicy during a cost of living crisis and rising bills too. I used to have it mostly together, but the current situation has been an overload.
Definitely needed this video. Thank you. My partner is on the spectrum and cannot handle money at all. Nor does he trust me to handle his finances. He's assumed that I have to support him. Um my pension doesn't stretch that far and my patience is wearing thin because every time I tell him no when it comes to buying something ridiculously expensive or paying his car repair and maintenance bills, he has a major temper tantrum. It's quite scary. I feel more like a mother than a partner. He finally got a job after several years and is starting today. And the man is 58. I have damn nearly tossed him out of my house over this issue. I thought maybe being homeless might knock some sense into him, but then realized it wouldn't because of his Asperger's. We've had a lot of heavy discussion about this issue. He's finally understanding things.
I have been having quite a bit of problems. I spend too much money. I have no savings. I have issues with jobs/work, and obviously cash flow. I am really trying to learn more and work on my skills.
I’m 18 and autistic and my parents have decided to send me money in smaller payments every 2 weeks instead of in a bigger payment every month. This is because I really struggle with managing money. I am getting a social worker for my autism soon though so hopefully they will help me with managing life
My son lives in his own apt. near mine, and though I am his rep. payee, and the card is in my name, he has possession of it. He pays his bills, but beyond that, spends most of his money on video games and fast food. He does save some of it, but when he wanted a gaming laptop, he spent much of his savings on it. He does pretty well, all things considered. We are working on the concept of saving money for a rainy day.
@@TrinityMorningstarI can relate, I am always beating up myself inside because I have trusted so many people, been scammed and now I'm broke, trying to make ends meet.
when I was in school, they made all special ed kids take budgeting classes only thing I have hard time doing is filling out all the different types of money orders that something I am still working on
once I want something or say I'm going to do something I have to do it. My mind is constantly thinking about it. last weekend I got the idea to put peel and stick tile in my kitchen. I was fixated on this I had to go out and buy and install them.
Being alone without friends is a big problem. No one wants to help. It is impossible to do it on your own. Being undiagnosed and not having the resources of a base who understands your needs can destroy your life. Having had a family who used abuse on you because it was easy to blame you for all their problems. The friends you did have physically used you as a slave getting you to pay for everything after convincing you that they are poor and the problems of the world are your fault. Boyfriends all turn out to be physically and emotionally abusive too. It is very hard to get the resources to pay for a proper diagnosis so you can avail yourself of the state funded support for people with autism.
Yes! At 53, I'm just now realizing that I have to take care of myself because nobody is coming to help me. From an early age I was taught by my family that I was stupid and worthless and that I didn't "deserve to live." It set me up for a lifetime of people-pleasing and not putting myself first. Thankfully, my husband and I understand each other, we're both on the spectrum, but it's difficult because we both struggle as well. My new motto is: "They only win if you give in!" I am determined to get my life in order and never back down. Best wishes to all.
Credit and debit cards make things difficult for a lot of people. In my opinion and experience working with cash as much as possible makes budgeting a lot easier because at the beginning and end of the day there is something that can be physically counted, not just random possible quantities in my head where I might forget something I spent money on.
And THEN the ADHD part kicks in when I can’t remember all the things without melting down: IMPULSIVITY! Then I can’t do the next impulse ‘cause no money and begin to meltdown… Glad you have a Naomi! One has support needs! Yep!
I’d like to see more on budgeting to help my 18 yo grandson who is living with us and I’m homeschooling him. I don’t think he has a clue about money, bills, etc
for me i struggle with many issues, a lot of the legal forms used are very vague and confusing causing me to get overwhelmed, on top of that many financial advice given to me is conflicting and nothing is really clear as being able to plan for the future requires not only a great amount of flexibility but also the ability to multitask and deal with hidden context that no one ever really spells out for you. Also the value of a dollar is never really clear as things like inflation confuse me. I cant even handle going to a bank as the terms confuse me and they spew information at me a mile a minute.
Thank you this was really practical and helpful. A follow up video on apps that work well for people with autism would be really helpful, especially ones that allow you to set up reminders to actually check balances and statements, as well as manage payments. I’m finding that there are loads of apps, but remembering to manage them is an issue. I don’t want to overburden the person I’m supporting with too many different apps/techniques - it would be better to just have two or three that are easy to use, and also remind the user to check in regularly.
One thing that are really usefull, is to have a seperate account that the credit card is connected to. And every time you need to buy food or other stuff, you need to log onto home banking and transfer a specific amount of money that you have set for each day. That way, your credit card is not connected to your income account. Or you can have four envelopes for each week, and then have a specific amount of cash in each. That way you know what you have for one week for food. You can see it physical this way. Make a budget on paper and visualize what your economy can do. Cut out everything like most of streaming services. Keep to one or two tops. Check your phoned call registry and find a phone service that covers exactly what you use. No need to pay for 10 hours a month, if you only use 2 each month. And always squize everything in order to have money that you can save up. Put those on a budget account, and use it for bill's and stuff that are unforseen.
I started keeping tabs on all of our finances through an Excel spreadsheet. It helps me tremendously to feel safe and secure and understand what we actually cost, like how much on average for food or children's clothes per month.
I have been thinking of creating one, but I felt that I’m focusing on things that doesn’t matter that much or I’m complicating things when it shouldn’t be that complicated. Now that I suspect that I have autism, I think my ideas will come to life. Money management apps exists I believe though..
I always feel like spending. Bought some things that i want and are still unused now. Forget sometimes I have something already and buy it double. Things like paying bills on time I definitely have issues with, planning it in of just lay it to the side and forget its there. Just had my official diagnosis last week, known it long time but it still hit me hard.
But putting stuff on Autopay is messing me up big time! I don't remember to cancel stuff. I have a gym membership for example that I got in 2019 right before covid lockdown. I've NEVER used it. But I can't remember to cancel it!! I mean I've tried calling/ emails and texts. BUT they want it in writing THROUGH the snail mail! I finally got an envelope and a stamp. But I always forget to write a letter and put the 3 together!??? It's $23 a month so I've paid over $800 to these people for nothing!! I even contacted the corporate offices too! I hate this, I'm going to say I'll do it tomorrow, but I'm sure I'll forget! Wish me luck!
Thank you so much for this video Dan. I really struggle with 'Do I need this?' Vs 'Do I want this?' And it's so so so SO hard to save money. But that's a good idea running it past someone before you buy it and Im going to start doing that because I think it can really help. And a video on budgeting apps would be VERRRRRRY helpful because I need help. I don't have to pay bills or anything yet because I still live with my parents but I've got to pay my mum $580 from our trip to Melbourne and it's hard because I'm only getting $153 a month from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) And between those payments I'm spending money, and it's so hard!!!!!! Do you think you'd be able to do another video on a few more tips for autistic people and money? Like how they can save money etc
I think if you spend almost on your food for example try to learn how to make things at home, like I learnt how to make spaghetti and I loved the process of it or cookies for example for my sweet cravings. I’m sure we could learn some tips from what people share online, but we could observe the root of our problems too sometimes and try to come up with solutions. Hope you pay off/ paid off the amount for your mother and learn more about money management or even get the opportunity to be employed somewhere you like!
In Australia we have BPAY which is an automatic bill payment coming out of a bank which is created and controlled by self. I have set up for utilities and insurance payments to come out weekly on the day I'm paid. It's a form of budgeting
Before I had my wife to help me, because I have dyscalculia (or numria- whatever, It caused me Major problems keeping track of finances) What I would do is round up all purchases to the nearest to the nearest $5 or 10.00 and round Down all deposits to the nearest 25 or 50, so I always maintained a cushion for when I inevitably screwed up the math somewhere. This is harder to do the less income you have of course, but it helped me a lot.
A question for ya'll. Do you find you go through phases of food items you'll eat? For instance I have goldfish crackers and string cheese for breakfast EVERY morning. Then for lunch it's Ramen noodles with string cheese. And I either skip dinner, or munch on potato chips. Every so often hubby makes our buys food and I'll usually eat it for dinner. But next meal will be the same a day before. It's hard to lose weight when you seem to only be able to eat a few " unhealthy " items!!!???
I struggle with balancing how to budget and getting everything paid while meeting my daily needs like food 😢 it’s overwhelming and I just shut down because I don’t know what to do.
Try to find ways to cut some of the spendings of there are any alternatives like learning to cook things like spaghetti or making cookies for sugar cravings (that might not be your case) I’m just giving examples. Hope you find more useful tips and figure out a great way to manage your money and / or find an opportunity that allows you to make more money while being surrounded with a good environment.
Good points the biggest is the high unemployment and even higher underemployment. When you make less than someone with the same skills budgeting is tough. I also lack motor skills mainly large so I am constantly paying for things many people can do themselves.
I did use my bank app that tells me what bills are coming up between pay day and the next. I do make sure I pay most bills a head so if I forgot one pay I ok. This information explains alot about me and now I know how to help my daughter now 11 when she older who just been diagnosed.
So … what happens when you don’t have someone to manage for you? Will you ever be able to live independently? What about people who stay in situations that aren’t necessarily supportive just because we can’t manage..
Hey I Bigger issue with money is I just don't understand I know when I get my money sometimes my mom and my support worker trys to help me but I just don't understand so can you do the videos on money and apps any advice loving your videos from sara cunningham
Dan I have son was that injured from Vax. They diagnosed him with Autism. He is 6. He is a late speaker. Can you share? I'm a parent and all I want is to talk story with him. I look for to the day I can talk to him and he speak back. I'm so hurt. I feel so betrayed by the medical establishment. Everyday I focus on God. Looking forward to his healing on my son Giovanni. Have a blessed day sir! Have a joyful Thanksgiving! Long! Live! the United State's of America! 👊😎
I came to watch this video 'cause I had sent $90 from someone on Discord to do art commission for d&d. That buy snacks from the vending machine art the training center where I work at.
I was just thinking this. All of those seem like ADHD, not Asperger's so much. Of course I'm also going off of my husband having only Asperger's and me having only ADHD, so I tend to see them as very different, but with them as comorbidities they might seem to overlap more. My husband is very good with money, he actually has more struggles with being spontaneous and spending on fun things than what would be more "unhealthy" spending habits. None of the points from this video apply to him, but most do to me, haha.
I'm autistic and (as far as I know) I don't have ADHD. I have huge issues with money management because I get obsessed with certain things and can barely function if I don't immerse myself in them (which, at times, has been expensive).

Wish me luck!
do it! im autistic and have adhd and relate, i hope you can cancel it
@@clawthe thanks, I had already forgot!! Lol
@@Philanthropyuae Thank you so much!!!! 🥹🩷🫂
In Australia we have BPAY which is an automatic bill payment coming out of a bank which is created and controlled by self. I have set up for utilities and insurance payments to come out weekly on the day I'm paid. It's a form of budgeting
Before I had my wife to help me, because I have dyscalculia (or numria- whatever, It caused me Major problems keeping track of finances)
What I would do is round up all purchases to the nearest to the nearest $5 or 10.00 and round Down all deposits to the nearest 25 or 50, so I always maintained a cushion for when I inevitably screwed up the math somewhere.
Can you link the best budgeting apps please? Really loving this background on issues with financial management. Thank you
Good points the biggest is the high unemployment and even higher underemployment.
I have this problem and it causes me so much stress and anger!
My husband has this problem, and it causes me so much stress and anger. I try to be patient but it's difficult😢

So … what happens when you don’t have someone to manage for you? Will you ever be able to live independently? What about people who stay in situations that aren’t necessarily supportive just because we can’t manage..
Last year, I blew $350 USD on clothing and makeup and to this day, I feel guilty about it

If you have memory problems with how much money you have you could carry cash 💷 to help you keep track of your spendings

Yup its made by an autist what do you expect.
Hard too tell if your just relaying your ADHD issues mate?
