Unchained Melody (AJ, at the age of 17 performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony December 2023 in Oslo, Norway) I watched as Angelina Jordan stepped onto the stage, her presence commanding attention. The room hushed, anticipation hanging in the air like a delicate thread. She stood there, a young girl with an old soul, ready to weave magic with her voice. As the first notes of "Unchained Melody" filled the room, time seemed to slow. Angelina's voice wrapped around each word, infusing them with a depth that transcended mere lyrics. Now that Angelina is older and about to go big, as a marketing strategy and to honor the girl, Princess of Ruins, AJ changed her eye color to light blue when she was 16. She also wears a blue eye pendant to remember her and honor.
Although there have been adult performers that have been featured more than once at this event - Angelina is the first to do so twice before becoming an adult. The first time she was 8 years old.

Angelina was recorded here in December 2023 at the Nobel Peace prize ceremony in Oslo Norway, performing this beautiful version of Unchained Melody. She paid tribute to Narges, who is currently on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two twin children, who are 17, spoke on her behalf at this event. The more people who are aware and call for change, the more likely the leaders of Iran will set her free. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges was, at the time of this tribute, on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian.
We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family. I hope all the angels will spread the story of Narges and her mission, with the hope for change.
In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time".
"Unchained Melody" comes from the film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. So indeed this song fits along with Narges being in prison and her two children, and the rest of the people who embrace freedom, calling for her release.
Angelina has performed with this orchestra a few times throughout the years.

They kept this rendition subdued because of the occasion. Angelina and KORK did a magnificent rendition of Unchained Melody! The perfect song for Narges Mohammadi Nobel Peace Prize! Third time with KORK, she did Back to Black and Summertime when she was 10! Has been invited twice to Nobel Peace Prize, previously appeared when she was eight! Narges is in jail for leading the fight for women’s rights in Iran! And let’s not forget Angelina’s Iranian heritage and Oslo is her hometown! At the end Angelina puts her hand over her heart acknowledging Narges children who were on stage and happen to be Angelina’s age and are living in exile in France! Bobby Hadfield's rendition has always been considered 'The Gold Standard' for this song, and rightfully so.
But Angelina, in this performance to honor an Iranian woman who is languishing in an Iranian prison for
simply defending women's rights, brings forth much more emotion laden penetration to the listeners than
Bobby.

The recipient for this year's award was Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian dissident, now in an Iranian prison for her outspoken messages and activism for women's rights. Narges' two twin children were here this evening for the event, and spoke on her behalf prior to Angelina singing. The children are Angelina's age and haven't seen their mother in years. She was able to speak with both before her performance which, I'm sure, made the performance all the more poignant for her in the moment. Angelina is one-quarter Iranian herself, her grandmother Mery, full Iranian. If you are lucky enough to watch any of the videos of Angelina interacting with any of her family, especially her grandmother, you will quickly see the connection between those two--the love is palpable, a beautiful thing to behold. For me, this was the most beautiful performance of Angelina's career, and its just beginning. Our beautiful angel has come of age.
