This is how it all started. North Carolina vs. Kansas. The first ever college game of "Mike Jordan".
Jordan picked two quick fouls at the beginning, so he had to sit for some time in the first half. The replays were quite rare but I included all of them along with announcers' comments on Jordan and a couple of James Worthy plays.
Jordan scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting. For the most part, his shots were jumpers under Dean Smith's famous four corners offense. He missed his first shot which was eerily similar to the game-winning shot in the 1982 NCAA Final game. He made his next three.
The end of the game is especially interesting. Announcers were talking about Kansas fouling Jordan because of his inexperience and they did. Even though it was his first trip to the line in the game, he managed to sink both of them under pressure.
    Enjoy.
    Post game notes & quotes:
    =========================
"UNC tops Jayhawks in opener" by A.J. Carr
    Raleigh News and Observer
    November 29, 1981
CHARLOTTE -- When your picture is splashed on magazine covers, you're ranked No. 1 in the polls and on everybody's most-wanted lists, getting your game together can be difficult.
But North Carolina pushed aside all the hoopla Saturday, went to the hoop and conquered stubborn, well-prepared Kansas, 74-67, in a season opener witnessed by 11,666 Coliseum fans.
The top-rated Tar Heels never had it easy, but they patiently pried open an eight-point spread midway through the second half, then fended off the Jayhawks.
"We played well offensively," said Carolina Coach Dean Smith, whose team defeated his alma mater on a 56.8 field-goal percentage. "They were willing to give us 10-footers. But we showed a lot of patience in attacking their zone."
Though the Jayhawks were intent on stopping the Tar Heels' inside attack, James Worthy still scored 20 points and Sam Perkins contributed 16.
Kansas also discovered that freshman Mike Jordan (12 points in his varsity debut), Matt Doherty (12) and Jimmy Black (9 plus seven assists) could land damaging blows.
"They finally realized we had outside shooting too," said Worthy. "That's what did it for us."
Carolina was wise in its shot selection, but Smith still spotted a few kinks in the system.
The Tar Heel coach was disappointed with rebounding and a shortage of second shots, and he felt that defense, with the exception of Black's work on Tony Guy, was sporadic.
"We got a win," said Doherty. "It wasn't great, but it was a good one to get under our belts. Offensively, we hit when we had to. Defensively, it takes a while to get everything working."
Kansas, which battled to a 37-37 half-time tie and led by as many as five on one occasion, got a 24-point production from radar-shooting David Magley and 18 points from Guy.
The Jayhawks also performed with confidence and skill against Carolina's special tactics, and trailed by only 67-63 with about four minutes remaining.
But over the 40-minute haul, the Tar Heels exhibited more depth than Kansas, which used the same five players most of the way and held a field goal, free throw and rebounding advantage.
The Tar Heels made their decisive move four minutes into the second half when, down 47-43, they went on a 12-0 tear for a 55-47 advantage.
Worthy wheeled for seven points during the stretch but got plenty of help. That was encouraging to the Tar heels, who were playing without Al Wood for the first time in four years.
"I felt real comfortable out there," said Jordan, the new kid in the lineup who went five for 10 from the field. " I felt good on my shots. I did throw a bad pass, though, and I need to help out more on defense."
Jimmy Black, who skillfully directed the offense, said, "We relied on Al Wood's shooting in the past, but this year several are picking up the slack. I like Jordan's overall game. He's a competitor and a hustler and we need him on the floor."
Jordan fits into the Tar Heel mod all right. but there's work for everybody, especially if you're the No. 1 team and No. 1 target in the country.
"This was a taste of the hard season to come," said Perkins, who collected nine rebounds and shared the honors with Worthy. "We will not let down in any way. I think we played very well today, and I think we did a good job inside. We got the ball in there at the right times."
Perkins, Worthy and associates also were opportunists. Late in the second half, Kansas lost its shooting eye for a spell and Caroline quickly capitalized.
"It's way too early to judge who's No. 1 in the country," said Kansas Coach Ted Owens, "But North Carolina is going to be a great club. This was their first game and it takes a while to get going no matter how many veterans you have."

In just his first game, notice what they say:
    "Jumping Jack"
"He's compared to Walter Davis and David Thompson" (who scored 76pts in an NBA game)
"He's a better guard than Thompson was"
"He's going to be a great one"
"He's shown me that thoroughbred something that responds to pressure"
"He's going against the system - they normally don't start even the most talented freshmen"
"You can see him growing up in this game"
"His inexperience didn't show there, did it"
    "He's an extraordinary athlete"

I live in Durham, NC - about ~25 miles from Chapel Hill where UNC is. I saw and met Worthy, Perkins, and Jordan at a UNC football game. They were going down my aisle in Kenan Stadium and I said hi. I was at the football game watching Lawrence Taylor play!!! I still get chills being in the prescence of greatness and then remembering that those guys were about to make both NFL and NBA history. Those were the days.....

We didn't how good he was then. NO one knew he'd become who he is, but I knew he was special because it was rare for college coaches to let guards go back then.
You handled, distributed, and took shots when you had them. He was the first guard I saw who was allowed to do whatever he wanted. Dean Smith disciplined him, but he understood what he had.
By his sophomore year, "yerrrrrr man", he'd become our Michael Jordan.

Then, he also helped the tar heels win the ACC men's basketball tournament, including its championship game. Next, he helped the UNC team win the 1982 NCAA men's national basketball tournament, including its championship game. Then, 2 seasons later, he won the Naismith award. He also helps team USA win their ninth olympic gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Also, in 1984, he was drafted into the NBA as a team member of the Chicago Bulls and led them to three consecutive NBA championships two times from 1991 to 1993 and from 1996 to 1998.

Look up Pete Marevichs debut with Atlanta in 70. After a quarter or so one of the announcers says "I ts Showtime". He was making passes from everywhere and had a great Jumpshot. I think most teams thought he was a ABA like player. Just a one on one guy. He was Magic before magic. Nate Archibald was great with Kansas city kings. He was not respected till he went to Celtics. Paul Westphaul was same with sun's. 6'4 guy who could run break, finish at rim and shoot.

O'Koren would crack the starting lineup later on during his freshman season of '76-'77 and of course played a more than pivotal role in the upset of UNLV in the national semifinals

there was NO 3-pt line officially until 1986! starting in '85, some of the smaller conferences started experimenting with the 3 as well as the shot clock. the 3pointer AND the shot clock became official by the 1986-87 season.

At 5:10, how is it not a shooting foul as MJ goes up for a rebound-dunk? On an unrelated note, Worthy's finger roll at 6:40 is classic.

Jordan got alot exposure in which he deserved, but big game James was the dude, He looks like a grown man playing with boys, Worthy has to be the best power forward of all time,He intevated that position. Jimmy black gets none of the credit he deserved as well, He one of the best point guards ever to play at UNC. Without blacks senior leadership and unselfishness to take the back seat to a kid is really a tribute to him and that heels team. Sam was also the man as well, Him and Worthy without a doubt the best 1-2 forward combination of all time.

Good enough that UNC signed him right after his Junior year in HS. And that summer '80 MJ was the highest rated HS player at the prestigious 5 STAR camp. As a Senior In '81 he scored 30 pts in the McDonald's HS All America Game.

Jordan is actually (or was actually, as of a few years ago -- I don't keep up with HS ball much) the only player who ever averaged a triple-double in high school, which he did his senior year with like 30/12/11 or something.

He had been very close to signing with the Wolfpack more than most know! Then he attended a national camp in Honesdale Pennsylvania and suddenly he was the hottest commodity! Bill Guthridge returned from Honesdale and informed Dean and the rest was history

Actually the 3-point line began in the 1986-87 season. It was already established in the NBA. They started using it much earlier in 1979-80.

They kept saying FRESHMAN because Dean Smith had NEVER started a freshman in his coaching career other than Jordan. Jordan was always great. Even that story about him getting cut in high school is overblown. He was a 15 year old trying to play on the varsity team when he should have been on the JV team in high school.

@@sirachisrael1778 , this was ESPN at 3 years old, with a veteran announcer, Jim Simpson, who was hired in to give the network some credibility. Simpson had Dick Vitale as a partner at times, but he's on in this game with Bucky Waters, who had a long announcing career, had been Duke's coach a couple of turns before Coach K came on. Black was revered for running the offense, there are plenty of people on the floor there to do the shooting.
