  • HOW TO BECOME A BETTER SCORER LIKE MJ: cli.gs/HowToScoreLikeMJ
    For my 100th upload, I thought it would be fitting to put up the game that started it all for me. This game is the reason why I started to record MJ's games and this game is the reason why my channel exists today.
    As a 9 yr. old in 1981 who had just discovered the awesome sport of basketball, I was hooked on the NY Knicks and Bernard King was my favorite player. Flipping through the TV that day, I stumbled across this game. It just happened to be the TV debut of Mike Jordan who I had never heard of. As I started watching, even though I was just a kid, I noticed that there was something different about a certain player wearing 23. He just appeared to move differently.
    Whether it was his obvious natural athleticism or his physical proportions, there seemed to be an extra gear within himself and a knack for making something routine seem spectacular. Perhaps it was because of the hangtime jumpers or double pump passes that were completely out of the norm for that time. Or, perhaps it was the fact that he was making plays that no one in the NBA seemed to be capable of doing. Whatever it was, I thought to myself, "this player looks like he's better than anyone ever". And from then on, I made an effort to record any games MJ was in so I wouldn't miss something spectacular. It was the beginning of my collection and as MJ became the greatest ever, I was grateful to have his entire career documented on my VCR from this moment on. While it would have been great to have had wide-HD telecasts back then, there is something raw about analog that is pure. Capturing that purity is all that matters.

    Great video. Thanks so much for posting... MJ was greatest NBA player of all time but he was also one of the greatest college players of all time too. People forget that.
    For the record, this was not Jordan's fist televised game. His first TV game was the first game of the 81-82 season vs Kansas in Charlotte. Jordan scored the first basket of the season in that game. Of course, he scored the last basket of that season too!

      @@stargellwilliams1311 Jordan actually did start his first game a month earlier vs Kansa in Charlotte. He didn't start this game because Dean Smith would often start a bench player from the area where a road game was being played, so their families could see them.

    There's no doubt players are bigger and more athletic now, but rules have been implemented to make it easier to score in the NBA now. If you get a chance, search any videos of the Bulls-Knicks playoff series from '92-'94, or any Pistons playoff games from the late '80's. It was twice as physical as it is now; New York in particular were simply brutal. Back then you could hand check, foul hard with no suspensions, clog the lane on defence, and teams rotated brilliantly. The most convincing

    This is now one of my xmas gifts. Jordan is the all time greatest to do it- simply put he was the perfect player for every situation. Great in some areas- good in others and then he had his own category AIR JORDAN. Remember if Jordan scored 25 everyone was disappointed, but that most of his comparisons career average-huh- funny... Jordan's bad nights were others career highs. Michael Jeffrey Jordan = NBA's greatest. Only a few are bigger than the sport-Michael, Muhuammad and Tiger. Peace.

  • @idster7
    @idster7 14 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    @Alex052480 Umm. I'd have to say that you're wrong. 1)Jordan scored 30 pts in the McDonald's HS Game, a record that stood for 18 years. 2)He was already on a team which had James Worthy&Sam Perkins, and coached by ball-distribution preacher Dean Smith, so shots were at a premium. 3)Jordan was only a fr. when he hit that shot against Georgetown, and his skills were raved about before that by both Billy Packer & Al McGuire. 4)Jordan was college player of the year as both a soph (S.N.)& jr.

    Players aren't more talented, they are just much better athletes for the most part. Pretty much everyone now in the league is an athlete, it wasn't so in the older days. Talent's always been there throughout the history of the league. The rules now make it easier to average high numbers for the stars of today. I will concede though that kids nowadays have so much more tools, such as the internet with videos of stars to inspire from in their game, along with better camps and more exposure.

    Knicks defence of 92-95, just as absolutely NO-ONE could begin to contain Jordan in his prime today, or Malone, Ewing, Hakeem, the list goes on. I can't think of any elite player from the 80's and 90's who wouldn't dominate today.

  • @jumpnam
    @jumpnam 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    was shooting and hitting 15 footers. Despite his size, John Stockton shot over 50% almost every year. Jordan won 5 of his 10 scoring titles hitting over 50% of his shots. There are so many great scorers around today, but so few consistently shooting well.
    The League is still the greatest in the world, with the best players by far, but I do hope for a return to high intensity, physical, fundamentally smart basketball I used to watch. I would tape every game I could; now I hardly watch any.

    Players today ARE NOT bigger. In fact, this is currently the SMALLEST era on file since the 70's in terms of height & weight, due to teams drafting more wing players to take advantage of the new defensive rules that FAVOR them..
    And as far as them being more athletic, that's B.S. too! You'd have an argument if you were comparing today's players & those from the 60's & 70's, but were talkin' about just 10-15 yrs ago..
    There's been no x-men type evolution in athleticism from '00 to now LOL!!

    break down in skills and fundamentals resulting in many players using purely their athletic talent to play. The older guys were just as, if not more athletic than today, but their physical abilities were often utilised less than their savvy and fundamentals. So to the young guys it appears that they were slower etc.

    argument comes from the players themselves, particular those who played in the '90's and early '00's. Clyde Drexler has said he would average 40 a game nowadays, and many coaches and analysts have criticised the limits imposed on defenders. The general consensus is that it's much easier to score now. You have the no hand check rule, 3 sec defensive rule, flagrant fouls called more, and you're also not able to bump cutters anymore. These rules have been specifically created to increase scoring.

    scorers are shooting poor percentages from the field, despite the reduction in contact allowed on defence. Kobe for example has never shot close to 49/50% despite his scoring talents. There's alot of poor shot mechanics around aswell which contributes to the low % (Kobe incidently has probably the best shot form in the league, along with Agent Zero). There's been a decline in the mid range game for years now, one reason Rip Hamilton gets so much recognition for his. Back in the day, everybody

    OK... So I was wrong. The NCAA had just started using it and it appears it was on a conference by conference basis. The fact remains, three pointers were rarely taken back at that time and most teams were intent on getting the ball as close to the basket as humanly possible 3 point line or not.
    For my part, you don't think a team that featured Jordan, Perkins and Worthy would run rough shod over anything out there now? OK, you roll with that.

  • @jumpnam
    @jumpnam 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another thing to bear in mind is that over the last few seasons a lot more players have been averaging in the high 20's and 30's scoring wise, which didn't happen too often years ago. I think the players now are bigger and more athletic, but that's the problem; they seem to rely too much on athletic ability and not fundamentals or mental toughness. I don't see a lot of polished moves or patience in the league now, but I do see alot of rushed execution and poor shot selection. A lot of the top

    I don't think it's correct to compare era's, if Clyde grew up in this era he would've played the way players are playing now, it might be true that players were tougher back then but if today's game is so weak why aren't there player's averaging 40+, especially since D. Stern is so bent on making the NBA more entertaining? I actually think player's are more talented nowadays, especially with how much basketball kid's play before they go pro.

    Notice that there is no 3 point line. There was no need to defend tightly from that far outside. Everyone was trying to get into the lane back then. Actually, it made the pro game much more interesting, with the understanding that the NBA did have a 3 point line at this time. The "easy" passes were of no avail generally because they would just cause the zone to shift. The beauty of it was when an offensive player could penetrate zones and make something happen. Not as easy as chucking 30 footers

    @Force2mj ok, well it was still Sam Perkins and James Worthy's team. in my opinion, MJ took a backseat to those guys early on. i had never heard of Mike until the '82 NCAA tournament(before that famous shot in the '82 champ. game).the best freshman that year was Patrick Ewing. plus, i'm from Memphis and we had a good team here. Memphis State was very good and thats about all i kept up with. When they got eliminated, i was able to focus on the other teams and thats when i 1st remember seeing Mike

    Hmm well i wasn't lucky enough to be alive to watch games back then as im only 17, so i can't say much without sounding like an idiot haha, but when i compare old and new games, i do honestly believe that the defense back then was much easier to play against than what it is now.
