Why complain about too many small hatchbacks? There can never be too many small hatchbacks and wagons. We need these vehicles. They are so much more useful and practical than small sedans.
I agree. For years, car reviewers said Americans wouldn't buy hatchbacks. Now they can't keep SUV's (hatchbacks that have been raised up) in stock. They are practical, versatile and come in lots of different flavours.
I had a flooded car, it was totaled by the insurance company. I was sued (won), and also called by multiple dealerships faced with my old (new but sunken) car asking about why the pre were so many problems with it, electrical, motor, electric motors, radio/CD player issues, touchscreen issues, etc. I feel for the subsequent owners.
Everyone is not looking for exciting. We want smooth and reliable. I recently rented a VW Jetta in Florida. Within a few hours after pickup, a dashboard warning light came on. I'd worked for a rental car company once and 'knew' the light was NOT indicating a significant problem. But I took the car back to MIA Airport and simply stated, "Do you have a Corolla available?" Left the parking lot in peace. When I did work at the rental car dealer, the new style Rav-4 came out. I was excited until I had to drive one. It was loud, it was noisy, have a tinny feel, hard ride, and too much hard plastic. I was shocked Toyota didn't put much thought into it. I'd steer customers to the previous generation RAV 4, or a Tucson, or even a Ford Escape, if we had any. However, if the new Corolla Cross rides like the new Corolla, I could consider that. My last Toyota, a 1999 Toyota Camry Solara V6 manual, lasted about 295,000 miles trouble-free, until another driver t-boned it. A previous Corolla, went more than 328,000 miles trouble free. So I won't accept low benchmark products from Toyota.
When I got my 1st car with auto on headlights I was caught a few times with them off at night. I put 2 and 2 together and it was usually after a carwash or service. So now whenever I get the car back I make sure the lightswitch is set to Auto.
It's not always bad. We just recently got 60% original price for our trade-in and 5% off the new car, which is a Hybrid BMW so we'll also get $10K in tax credits and rebates. The new car is in the dealership right now waiting for us to pick up. :)
A new Corolla would normally sell for $22,000. But with the extreme shortage of new cars out there, 2 year-old Corollas are now selling for $30,000+. New Corollas (if you can find any) are being sold at dealerships with a $10,000 markup over MSRP. So when you find a flood-damaged car that is selling for the same as a new car, you buy it as that is the only car you can find within 200 miles of where you live. Then it stops working 2 months later.
My friend was getting Toyota Tundra, dealer was asking 25k over the msrp, but it was TRD PRO trim. Dealers trying to make money at any chance, because there’s no more cars to sell
A 1992 Subaru SVX was my first car to have auto headlights and every vehicle since (except antiques), including work trucks has had them. My last two cars had it and adaptive cruise. I don't understand why more cars don't have adaptive cruise.
Best to buy brand new cars. Start from scratch . No one else owned it. I love this way. You pay more and use longer and not paying for previous owners mileage wear and tear maintenance.
OMG why are you going on & on about how it's not exciting to drive The cross is a nice looking car drives very nice good on gas many safety features and an excellent price And ontop of that it's a Toyota! will last forever no worries. What more could you want
i have a corolla cross with 2.0 engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible. so l smile when i see the gas pump, and its a different kind of fun to squeeze for MPG.
there's tremendous cost when you have a great array of choices in your portfolio, esp. for mfr's who have to do more R&D, and retool the assembly line. there's also possible cannibalization within the same brand. why do you think we don't see anymore subaru legacy wagons?
The solution to lighting is simple: ALL lights should be on all the time when the car is started. No thought necessary. My Kia Rio has auto lights, but they don’t come on when I feel they should (cloudy day, for example). However, if I turn on my headlights, ALL exterior lights likewise come on. When I shut the car off and remove the key AND open my door, all the lights go out. When I re-start the car, ALL the lights come back on. Works great and I never worry about my lights; they are ALWAYS ON.
Hey Talking Cars team, great information of identifying flood damage vehicles. A local salvage dealer here in Southwest Virginia often advertises "low flood damage" cars and trucks. Is there a difference between a "low flood damaged" vehicle and a normal flood damage vehicle. Love the show, watch it regularly on Utube. Keep up the great work!
If you are referring to East Coast Auto Source everything they have is garbage. Period. Whether it was flooded to the bottom of the seats to the top of the roof, avoid them like the plague. You may not know the full extent of the damage for months or years when electronic gremlins and structural issues start appearing due to corrosion in parts of the vehicle you can't see or inspect at the time of purchase. It isn't worth the gamble
My most comfortable driver’s seat position is with the seat-bottom close to, or at the end of, its travel i.e. as far back as possible. However I’ve found in a number of compact cars that this puts the back of my shoes right up against a cross-beam in the floor running under the front seats. This makes it quite uncomfortable to cruise long distances in the car as it prevents the rearward movement of my feet and stretching of my legs when the cruise control is on. I’m suprised that CR has never commented on this aspect of a car’s comfort level.
Don't hold your breath waiting for the Cross. Today Toyota announced that production will be delayed until early 2022 and that in total Toyota will reduce production on several models by 300,000 units.
My mom didn't understand the difference between the light icons in her Outback. I didn't realize that until I borrowed it and turned off the fog lights. A few minutes after she picked it up from my house she called me in a panic that "the headlights aren't working" because the icon wasn't on anymore. After trying to explain to her over the phone the various settings on the stalk I met her at a gas station and showed her what the icons meant. She had had the fog lights on for FIVE YEARS. I think she might be at the point where she shouldn't be driving anymore.
Yikes! My wife had the bad habit of turning off the control to "Off" on the stalk so even the DRLs wouldn't come on. Very dangerous on these long dark viaducts around here when other drivers don't see ya coming.
Thinking this will be perfect for us! We need something easy to get in and out of for an elderly family member, a little taller than the regular Corolla hatchback, a bit more room for groceries, dependable, not pricey, and long lasting.
The Corolla Cross will be built in the new Toyota-Mazda plant in Huntsville Alabama. No word as yet what Mazda vehicle will also be built there but you can bet they will share components.
The Toyota interior is a step down from the Mazda. The Corolla drivers seat was uncomfortable for me (6'2") but fine for my 5'1" wife. The Mazda worked for both of us. We went with the CX-30. The Corolla was less expensive.
I get a good chuckle out of this "fun to drive" notion. We arent on a race track folks. We are going to work, school, the mall...groceries etc. If you want a "fun" car what are you really doing? Lol
I have seen a few cars driving at night with ONLY their headlights are on. The tail lights are OFF and I have approached from the rear of the car and wonder why this could happen
What might be happening is, when you take your car in for service they will often turn your headlights off and Dont always remember to turn them back on. And because people are so used to the auto setting they don’t even think about it when they leave the dealer after service.
Heard the Toyota Cross is super loud? Same thing with the RAV4 . They once made quiet refined cars, what’s the issues here with them. They also advertise the Venza as quiet and the tire noise is intense. FYI Toyota, consumers like to have normal conversations without raising their voices in cars.
Older couple in 70s. My wife’s physical therapist told her that people with her problem do best with vans or SUVs. We’ve were driving a sedan. Access gave her pain every time. We got the new Venza. It is much better for her. Love the Venza but will consider this next time.
Having owned a 2020 Mazda 3 sedan and now a 2021 Mazda CX-30 and having a number of 59 - 62 cm road bikes, I might be able to answer your question. I could get the bikes in the Mazda 3 but it was a chore each time. With the 30, it's easy. Taking the front wheel off makes it even easier. Take your bike to the dealer. Problem solved.
I've always struggled with bikes and Mazdas. I used to rent a lot of cars for bike race weekends and because I don't often have the luxury of folding down back seats (where would my dog and son sit?), so I will always take off BOTH wheels, and the Mazda3 Hatchback was still easily the hardest car to fit my medium sized 54 cm road bike frame in the back. Ford Focus hatches also pretty terrible. In fact it's almost always easier to get a bike into ANY trunk than it is a hatchback. It's one reason why I bristle whenever car reviewers automatically say/assume that the hatchback has more cargo capability. Because, I can tell you with a lot of certainty, if you need to keep rear seats up, then you are better off with anything with a trunk.
Have to disagree. Don't know how you could get any bike in a Mazda 3 (or compact car) without folding down the rear seat(s). The big advantage of a htachback is that you can fold down a rear seat without having to deal with the rear seat shelf and small passthru cutout of a sedan.
25:20 Often the opening of the tailgate is too narrow as on the 'Soul' . It's the opposite of form follows function. Btw if you have hydrolic front brake on your bike, don't grab the Fr. brake handle while your Fr. wheel is out ...
So when do you think that the realistic prices for Cross will come back to the norm? After all, this hype is in the rear view mirror and Dealers parking lots are full again, maybe 3 year from now?
About the Corolla Cross . . . - He he . . . comparing a CH-R, a Prius and a RAV4? Hmmmm I'd look again if I were you. - A hybrid is projected for next year. - Less money than a RAV4, AWD possibility and an upcoming hybrid means 100k+ in sales just from the Toyota lovers and those younger folks looking for a reliable rig with a sizable interior and a smaller footprint.
Mike Quincy's video connection is still inferior and jumpy. The other two participants' connections work fine. Can't this be fixed?? It's very disturbing visually to watch this.
It’s going to come in hybrid I’m really excited for the hybrid version it’s gonna be more powerful and I love hybrids Toyota hybrids I wish you talk about the hybrid version of it when it comes out
My 2019 Prius all wheel drive. got flooded. So I got another 2019 Prius I will drive if they had the hybrid out of this I would have really considered getting it and when my fiancé needs a new car next year I think I’m gonna get one.
I look at the cost as 10 year and get rid of it. If I paid $30,000 for new and used it for 10 years . My depreciation is $3000 if is 0 value at end of 10 year cycle. If I buy the same car that’s 3 year old car w same trim and paid $21,000 for it .. use it 7 years to offset as 10 year old . $21000 for 7 year is $3000 per year too! To me that’s the same thing! So better go w new one. But that’s me!
12:00 all the real toyota wagon made aren't available in NA . Fielder , Touring , etc aren't here . In light of the popularity of SUVs, it may be time for automakers to give wagons another try. Consumers obviously find them useful, and most don’t really need 4x4 or high ride heights.
So, I will assume that when my 2019 Hyundai Kona lease ends at the end of this year, my 2022 Kona will be a REFRESHED model? I have and will get again the Limited model. I would love to lease an EV but I cannot afford the extra $10K cost up front as I'm recently retired (not my choice) and only drive usually under 100 miles a week!
ric,.hi,.consumer car reports I'm looking to buy the 2022 Toyota Corolla cross L basic model for the good history compact low maintenance reliable 2.liter. 4 cilinder. 169 hp. It does have a good track record for a reliable basic L model.im looking to buy "like the safety features it comes with"👍. thanks again, great video information.take care, stay safe,👍5🌟
I just heard your answer for the guy who is 6’8” tall. The same thing applies to those of us who are short. I’m 4’11” tall and drive a RAV4, but I am really a sedan person. I would love to buy a mid sized sedan, do you have any suggestions.
Wish the Corolla Cross was a Corolla Hatchback with a lift and side cladding, like the Impreza/Crosstrek. Would be way cooler than what they ended up with.
For some reason, older folks always seem to turn off their automatic headlights. I guess it’s cause they’re from an older generation where you always had to manually turn your lights on and off.
CR, Toyota's new Corolla Cross seriously disappoints with a tepid engine that burns too much gas and a retrograde Torture Beam Rear Suspension® on FWD models. Send it back to the drawing board and bring it back with a more efficient, AWD, Hybrid system. It is not too late for the 219 hp 2.5 system from the RAV4 Hybrid to save the day.
I strongly dislike the Toyota 2.5 liter. It's noisy and agricultural sounding. The reason I prefer the Lexus UX is it doesn't suffer from having that 2.5 liter engine. I hope for either the 1.8 or 2.0 hybrid.
It was originally launched in Thailand first. They are testing the market for this small suv / crossover to rival HRV. EU and US will likely to get bigger engine in probably a facelift or 2nd gen in future
Hoping that Toyota drops the RAV4 hybrid driver train into the Corolla Cross without letting some of the ponies escape the paddock. Let's burn some rubber!
Corolla Cross like most SUV's shouldn't be a top pick for teen drivers. They will have a false sense of security with AWD that is not safety feature and doesn't help you stop but is only convenience. Better to get a vehicle that can have CrossClimate+ tires, which scored very good across all categories including ice braking. Very limited options though. Wish there was a website where I could input a tire and it would tell me all the vehicles that I could put that tire on and not up or downsize.
Bleh-mobiles like the Corolla Cross are why people would rather text than drive, why self-driving cars are getting attention, and why interesting cars with manuals are being replaced by soulless crossover blobs everywhere. Frankly, crossover buyers should get out of the market and take the bus. They'll get the same level of enjoyment from it.
I thought Lexus and Hyundai had ugly front grilles, but this car is the ugliest front end I have ever seen. Otherwise, it looks like a nice vehicle, but the segment is already crowded.
The JDM Cross is so much more asthetic looking. We need that front bumper as a FREE option. Toyota dropped the ball if they release this ugly pug Cross here in the US.
finally... the ONLY three people that should be doing this show weekly

I'm a sedan guy, myself. I don't usually need all the extra room, for which they charge a lot more than it's worth.
My last two vehicles & present vehicle are all hatchbacks! The most practical for daily use!✌🏽
Agreed. Hatchbacks are a great alternative to a small truck or SUV.
I had a flooded car, it was totaled by the insurance company. You're missing one obvious point: you CAN have all 3 (smooth, reliable, AND exciting). Life's too short to drive boring cars.
VWs are junk
I see the Carolla Cross attracting older folks who want some utility and comfort but don't want to spend alot of money. Think of the Scion XB.
True.
When I got my 1st car with auto on headlights I was caught a few times with them off at night. I put 2 and 2 together and it was usually after a carwash or service. So now whenever I get the car back I make sure the lightswitch is set to Auto.
Sucks for all those people that they're now buying in a terrible market.

How are the Venza, Carolla Cross and Prius "all the same hatchback-y" vehicle?
Yeah I don't know either. Very different target markets, different price points
It seems to me that Toyota is just trying to get a vehicle in each market segment, like every other manufacturer.
there's tremendous cost when you have a great array of choices in your portfolio, esp. for mfr's who have to do more R&D, and retool the assembly line. there's also possible cannibalization within the same brand. why do you think we don't see anymore subaru legacy wagons?

Todd: Ford F-150 Lightning should have a good amount of room for you.

Have you guys thought about having a dedicated dealer sell your review cars or selling them yourself via the website?
I get a good chuckle out of this "fun to drive" notion. We arent on a race track folks. We are going to work, school, the mall...groceries etc. If you want a "fun" car what are you really doing? Lol
I have seen a few cars driving at night with ONLY their headlights are on. The tail lights are OFF and I have approached from the rear of the car and wonder why this could happen
Either they are out, or what u thought were headlights are really DRL's. Old cars used the same lights, not LEDS like today.
What might be happening is, when you take your car in for service they will often turn your headlights off and Dont always remember to turn them back on. And because people are so used to the auto setting they don’t even think about it when they leave the dealer after service.

Venza seats are same as Lexus.
we almost got the venza but then i seen this and changed my mind and got a corolla cross awd

Why do you think Toyota doesn't offer the Corolla Hatchback with a sunroof?
Ryan got a hair cut... 😍😍😍
But did he comb it? Wash his face, lots of shine? Shave? It is cool when you're in your early 20's. But now it looks lazy.
I'd imagine that the next manual you'll test in the Nissan Z, since the manual option is the more popular one with Z buyers.

I just heard your answer for the guy who is 6’8” tall. The same thing applies to those of us who are short. I’m 4’11” tall and drive a RAV4, but I am really a sedan person. I would love to buy a mid sized sedan, do you have any suggestions.
Something with both a telescoping steering wheel and power adjustable pedals would help you, in any vehicle.
Wish the Corolla Cross was a Corolla Hatchback with a lift and side cladding, like the Impreza/Crosstrek. Would be way cooler than what they ended up with.
This will sell very well
For some reason, older folks always seem to turn off their automatic headlights. I guess it’s cause they’re from an older generation where you always had to manually turn your lights on and off.
'TOYOTA - Sufficiently Adequate'
To show flood damage, an insurance claim has to be made.
Good point.
Except, they're trying to conceal flood damage and sell it for far more than an insurance settlement.
Pretty sure the hybrid will be available soon, but it’s probably won’t get the 2.5 powertrain.
Today's torsion beams are fine unless you want to play. They won't handle the twisties @ speed like a MLRS. For everyday driving, it's not an issue.
DTL don't work as well as the headlights anyway, we should just have the headlights all the time, and get rid of the DTL.
Ayeee Ryan got his haircut! Anyway, Toyotas can be so boring sometimes...also I agree how many CUVs do they need?
Good info but there is way to much talking and not getting to the point . Love Consumer Reports .
Offer the manual!
Hoping that Toyota drops the RAV4 hybrid driver train into the Corolla Cross without letting some of the ponies escape the paddock. Let's burn some rubber!
45 mpg.
I thought the CEO of Toyota said no more boring cars, but none of you seem excited about it and keep using words like adaquate. :/
CR has a TH-cam channel? How did i not know this! Lol
6'2"
Corolla Cross like most SUV's shouldn't be a top pick for teen drivers. They will have a false sense of security with AWD that is not safety feature and doesn't help you stop but is only convenience. Better to get a vehicle that can have CrossClimate+ tires, which scored very good across all categories including ice braking. Very limited options though. Wish there was a website where I could input a tire and it would tell me all the vehicles that I could put that tire on and not up or downsize.
29:25 go try them out yourself? Lol
To me TOYOTA = OLD MAN/LADY boring vehicles! I'll wait for my 2022 Kona.
The JDM Cross is so much more asthetic looking. We need that front bumper as a FREE option. Toyota dropped the ball if they release this ugly pug Cross here in the US.
The kid on the left looks sober this week.
Too much talking!
Were you expecting a movie or something?
😂
Well, it is titled "Talking Cars"!
all BS
Sorry, her gravely voice, smacking of lips, and continues gasps for air make me want to turn off the video. Get a drink of water already!
