    So many people understand what happens when they turn the knobs on various compressors, but they don’t understand why they would want to use one over another to tailor the rhythm, feel, or emotion of a song, and you nailed it! Excellent video!

    From all the kazillions of compressor tutorials in tube, along side with Rick Beato's comp vid this is the best. This complements perfectly the emotional side while the Beato's is the practical one.

    This is such a wonderful video on compression, I too felt like I was adding compressors to things, only to have them sound worse than before and wondering what I was doing wrong. You really showed how compression isn't just a mindless step in the mixing processes, but can be an incredibly intentional and artistic part of making a mix. Thank you a ton!

      Same with distortion, EQ. and basically anything else. I just bought Harmor again and love that it REALLY quickly let's you play around with different distortion types, but sometimes doing nothing really is best. It's mostly just about looking at what a sound is lacking in it's context, maybe put some saturation to make that saw sound intended to be beefy and crunchy a bit better at it's role, maybe find where the snap is in your clap's EQ or multiband plugin and see what it sounds like when you emphasize it more, but more of what's typically good isn't usually good when it's already there.

    The is the most comprehensive and best explained video on compressors I’ve ever watched. Almost every video I’ve ever seen talks waaaaaay too much about the theory and mechanics behind what a compressor does, and neglects what this video stays focused on: real-world application and end results. To me the concept behind compression is easy to understand, knowing exactly what result you’re trying to get and which compressor to get it from is tricky if you don’t know the differences between types of compressors. Brilliantly explained and demonstrated, thank you for making this!!!

    This video shows you that if you don't do it right it's like having a classroom of kids with their hands all over your faders randomly turning things slightly up and down. Compressors make you in control of the automatic volume control. If you think of what the compressor is hearing or "detecting" as a window where the loudest or fullest signal triggers the volume is being turned down quickly and the release is how fast it springs back to full volume. The faster it recovers the more it will make quieter parts seem louder because the are no longer being turned down. Also how sidechain compression is using the compression detection from a different source to affect the source you are hearing. Like the vocal can turn down other distracting instruments while it's heard and then they rise back to normal volume when the vocal stops, making new melodic moments in the spaces. And also sidechain that controls how much of the low end is moving the compressor needle into gain reduction which could be over compressing the rest of the song so much it creates pumping effect across the mix or eq range.

    Hang on, did I just hear you say Vari-Mu compression doesn't add character? That's not correct hahaha. Vari-Mu compressors use tubes and tubes add a tremendous amount of color. As a matter of a fact, they are some of the most colored compressors available. Lots of engineers (including myself) sometimes add a Vari-Mu compressor and don't even dial in any gain reduction. We use it just for the color. They are known to push the low mids forward as soon as you turn them on. Also I think you meant to say that the most popular VCA style is the SSL 4000E (sometimes called a 4kE) or the SSL G Bus compressor. I'm not sure what a SSL 4000K is. I am a professional mixing and mastering engineer, so I'm more than qualified to be saying this.

    Vari Mu can be the dirtiest if you leave the threshold up and drive the input gain. You can get two completely different sounds from it. With lowering the treshold it will be silky, smooth, fancy. By driving the input it will be rauchy, dirty, fat & loud. Gain stageing is crucial here.

      The compressor effectively turns the volume knob down and up again much quicker and more accurately than a human hand can do it. They do it in milliseconds.
      A fun game to play is to have some music coming out of your phone's crappy loudspeaker and then intermittently put your finger over the speaker to make it quiet then loud. It will often make a whooshing sound as the volume goes up and down and you might be able to time it so you make all the snares quieter. The compressor can duck the volume *during* the snare and then restore the volume to normal without any whooshes or distortion. It's that quick.

    Just thinking about the LIVE application, which one could be used for live so the singer does not hear the compression but still be compressed so they do not shout like crazy.

    • @RansbyJohan
      @RansbyJohan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldnt depend on a comp to fix a singers microphone technique :) But most singers loves the sound of a good compressor, so it's all about which comp you like the sound of :)

    • @BojanBojovic
      @BojanBojovic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RansbyJohan Ah, cultural differences I suppose. 😃
      Here where I am from singers do not know what the compressor is, but most certainly they do not like the effect as they feel it chokes them. 😃🤣 They do not understand that it just raises the quiet parts while loud parts stay the same, but the fact that they feel less dynamic range they always complain and that is why I try to make the compressor as transparent as possible so they do not complain and I do not get deafened by their shouting. 😃

    • @RansbyJohan
      @RansbyJohan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BojanBojovic OHHH :D But then what you could do is to send the singer the uncompressed signal and use the compressed signal for the audience :) But I would use a slow compressor to hide the compressor, so f.eks. an opto or a vari-my, but that's expensive if you need them as hardware :)

    • @AutPen38
      @AutPen38 ปีที่แล้ว

      This reminds me about Frank Sinatra being a master of "natural compression". When performing live, he learned to lean into the mic to whisper the quiet parts, but when he got to the big belting choruses, he would step back or hold his microphone at arm's length. This meant that the volume in the auditorium's speakers never got too loud or caused distortion, but the emotional intensity was still picked up. When he got to the studio though, he was as keen as anybody to use the latest compression technology. The vocals on those old Capitol and Reprise records sounded so much better than everyone else's, because Frank's producers had access to the Fairchild compressor, which used to cost thousands of dollars back then. George Martin reportedly sat in on one of the sessions and said he was jealous because they didn't (yet) have a U47 mic or Fairchild compressor at Abbey Road. It didn't take too long before compressors were used a lot for live shows too though.

    • @BojanBojovic
      @BojanBojovic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AutPen38 The problem with almost all singers I met in my life is that they either do not move the mic from their mouth, or they move it too much. I am not sure which one is worse, but imagine moving a dynamic microphone from your mouth down to your belly because you sing something loud, it is really funny. :)

    • @AutPen38
      @AutPen38 ปีที่แล้ว

      A well-lit face, a black shirt, and a fairly dark room behind, with a circular (?) cut-out mask that has its alpha transparency fading in strength. It worked particularly well when overlaid on the DAW screen in this example. (I was going to make a separate comment that I really liked it). A different coloured t-shirt might have ruined the pleasant effect.
