Compressors are powerful weapons that define the tone, texture, and attitude of our productions. Join Gregory Scott, Kush Audio’s analog and plugin designer, as he twists the knobs on a compressor plugin while telling you exactly what to listen for, making it incredibly easy to hear all the nuances that make compressors the most magical pieces of gear in a producer’s arsenal.

The Bob Ross of audio mixing
happy little hihats :)
Hahaha
Or Bob from Twin Peaks.
ha! i was thinking exactly that.
@@saschaz483 Yours is my youtube comment of the week....😂
This is ASMR for musicians, the lighting, the smooth explanation, a soft voice. This is fire
@CodoneMastr His voice has a meditative quality to it.
Heavily compressed, no less.
lmao. Someone should request vids of him tapping the knobs on his racks or a vid of him rubbing the microphone hahaha
100!
Oh yeah! So, I am not the only one who was like: Damn, this guy is so smooth, almost spiritual, like visiting his Shambhala group every Friday.
And this is not meant to be disrespectful!
It is so fascinating how these mathematical, signal processing electronics and physiscs turn into different vibes of emotions and giving intruments the final touch.
Man, overall music is a great mixture of physics and emotions.
Thank you, for your content!
Drum&Rhodes should be a genre. Could listen to that loop all day long!
After kush I could listen to it for hours
@@brennyb4917 After hours I could listen to it with kush
Add some guitar and vinyl crackle and it's basically lofi.
Gregory Scott's own band. Link's in the video. Check out all the songs. He plays the drums, the keys, and does all the production and post. But of course. Does this man do anything that isn't pure gold?
Drum&Rhodes, I can dig it
This video is one stone two birds for me. Not only it is the best video about compression, I also did a guided meditation. Now I feel I know better and calm af.
25 years playing with compressors, and this guy finally gets me to understand it in 20 minutes
Yes i me to
this guy is a legend, let's register us to be his son.

Dude, this is literally mixing ASMR. You're a king
i was about to post the same comment lol. it really is. relaxing to watch^^
I cannot stretch how much this channel has influenced me ,my mixes my sound and the way i approach them, all i can say is thanks Gregory. Knowledge is the most precious gift you can give to us.
Well put! Completely agree
Same here 🤙
I completely agree! 🎶
Wholeheartedly agree
Hear hear! A gift of great beauty and true love.
I feel like you let out 20 years of experience in 20 minutes in a way that I totally understood. To hear your insights and how you were able to convey that to the novice in a way that, I mean, I was right there with you. Truly awesome.
Wow, thank you!
Not only am I learning, I'm having an experience not unlike hanging with an old friend in a most relaxing environment. So relaxing and chilled out. Thanks for making experiences and not just videos.

1) it ends
2) you can only like it once
It was the most eye-opening 20 minutes about compression ever. You are a great teacher man! Thank you!
He officially made me woke on compression, much better than my lecturer taught me in sound engineering
I've NEVER heard anyone talk about compression like this. AMAZING work
I'll never look at my release knob the same way ever again.
word up
Ha ha
Is there any analizer to show just the transients of the compressor attack?
Sorry for my question because 2 thousands people have written their comments so then no one can see my comment
@@Kambiz.Mahdavi no problem! I’ll try to answer that question: there’s a compressor that I use (that’s free) called Rough Rider and it has a visual feed on it so you can see what it’s doing to your signal as you adjust your settings. In theory you could put a second one behind it (or any other compressor) in your chain with a 1:1 ratio so you could just analyze the first signal from there solely. ..But more importantly, with any processing moves you make (EQ, comp., etc.) you’ll want to A-B them with your ears to really see if what you’re doing is helping “before-after-before-after.”
@@Kellz_777 mr Kelly I appreciate you and your help
Really tnx for your kind words
Grateful
I hope you always be a successful person in your career and life

Finally, someone talks about compression on a higher conceptional level instead of the mechanics. Thanks a bunch!
exactly!
this is the most beautiful and musical lesson about compression. This is how mixing should be approached, musically, artistically. I learned so much with this video. Thank you Gregory.
So true!! Thank you so much

Beautiful is the right word. I woult trust him with my mix. He has so much taste and nuance.
Always good stuff , thanks Gregory we appreciate You!
Very true! This is the best video explaining/teaching compression I've ever seen.
"sometimes that's all you need - to remind the listener the sound exists". an often missed but CRUCIAL concept.
Can't believe videos like this are free. Hands down the best compression tutorial I've ever seen
Some say the best things in life are free....
Find someone who talks about you the way Gregory Scott talks about release.
Amen brother. You'll love eachother forever❤
100!!!
And just like that, we have THE most comprehensive and practical explanation of compression anywhere on the web. How many of us were pretty much winging it up until now?
Ever heared of Dan worrall?
This is a comprehensive and practical explanation of DRUM compression. You will find compression on ancillary elements to have very different tones and emotions.
@@Arcessitor I get your point. I still recommend you checking out Dan Worrall's channel if you don't know him yet. :)
He explains things in a way I haven't seen before and he also did a video on drum compression. But Kush's video is also interesting :)
@@Arcessitor True, but even this is a revelation for most. You can extrapolate that to fit other sonic elements. The function of the audio compressor is still the same, no matter what the source audio is.
@@DoubleDoubleU Dan Worall is good, no doubt, but Gregory Scott's way of breaking down the concept into something even my 8-year-old can understand is what sets him apart from everyone else. Dan still sounds like a tutorial.
This is by far the best compressor explanation on TH-cam period! soothing voice, smooth music, and Jesus-like teacher, man you are killing it.
What. This was 20 minutes long! It barely felt like 10.
Also, this has got to be the best explaination of compression I've seen, and I've seen some good ones.
It may have been 20 minutes but it felt more like ⅓ of an hour.
These just some basics but it's not what a compressor does. It's about placement in the mix and no that doesn't work with just slammin it on a drumbus.
@@horowizard Oh snap! You know fractions. Bruh, let's talk.
I agree! check out tony maserati on multiband comp on vocals. its ALL about attack/release.
lol I felt the same, didnt realize til I saw ur comment, I actually spent most of the video with my head down and my eyes closed. I think alot of his videos are great for that
That might be the greatest line I’ve ever heard....”what you think of my art is your business, not mine.”
That's actually a life changing mindset for a musician. Too much competition and comparison in this field.

The way he says “Let’s get you hearing it” when he goes into release.. you instantly know you’re in good hands.
i learned more about compression in this 20 min video than i have after years of studying audio engineering. what a beautiful demonstration.
Right on, mission accomplished!!
This is a pearl found in the darkest depths of of the ocean. Surrounded by tons of junk. Nowadays thousands of people became "youtubers" but they have nothing to say. But this is exceptional, very quality stuff.
This guy so good at making compressor, he has one built into his vocal cord
might be built in in his necklace... buy it for $ 999
His voice just really indicates he's good at mixing things
I'm so used to hear youtube sound engineers make a sound change with a plugin, say, "ooh this addition sounds so good"and I can't hear a freakin difference 😂 so nice to be able to actually hear all of the differences mentioned here.
How on earth did a video about drum compression make me rethink my life
Dude...this is by far one of the best and most informative videos on compression ever made. 27,000 likes and 143 ignorant haters proves that. You're like the Bob Ross of mixing.

This was the Bob Ross Compression Video I needed to finally understand. Thank you, sir.
His voice mix in the video is a COMPLETE EXAMPLE of a compressed vocal. --- his own recorded voice is seriously "attacked"
I'm just happy to be alive at a time when its possible to watch such a nerdy and in-depth video about the emotional aspects of listening to what a compressor does, excellently executed both technically and aesthetically by a gentleman and obvious master of his craft, from my shitty couch on the other side of the planet
Hot Damn! Compression on vocals next please!
You took the vocals right out of my, erm, keyboard!
I stringly second this suggestion
Absolutely! I'm excited to hear what he has to say about attack and release times on vocals.
Yes please!
It has always seemed to me that the attack and release settings aren't as important on vocals and other signals that don't have hard transients. But maybe I just don't know what to listen for.
Easily in the top five audio engineering videos I’ve ever encountered. Masterful. Both the content, AND the video production. Flawless sound, perfect blend of screen capture and face shot, just a master class in every way. Thanks so much!
This felt like a personal tutorial from a mentor inside of his studio.
As a 17yo beginner, ive watched alot of videos on compression but this one made it so simple. I no longer need to guess what these knobs do. This is golden, thank you.
Finding those attack "clicks and ticks" after turning it down and release being hard to grasp are the two most on-point tips ive ever heard about compressing.

If this channel played on repeat in every home and office, world peace would be achieved. Groovy, baby.
As a drummer who's recorded and mixed drums for years, including my own, I have never approached drum compression like this. I know how a compressor works, what the dials do. But I never paid so much attention to the effect on the emotional side of the music. Thanks for opening my eyes with this!

The first 5 minutes just hearing him talk, sound levels of the song/voice/drums, all felt like top notch quality. QUALITY video with actual useful knowledge. Glad I found this! Thank you! Can't even believe this was 20mins long... time flew by
This was an emotional rollercoaster and I cried during the part where the dry signal was blended in with the heavily squashed ride cymbal. I rate this a solid 9/10 with one point deducted for the lack of outro credits. Looking forward to the successor where we get to follow the signal through the earlier stages of the signal chain, as teased in the beginning of this story.
I feel this video accurately targets the long-regarded concept of the 'musicality' of a compressor and how it can truly alter the tone and mood of a sound. Arguably one of the most concise and beautful explanations of the topic!
Finally a fresh voice in the engineering/mixing jungle of youtube. Your stuff is gold and one of its kind.

Man, ive just got to say this. Ive been following your channel for a while now and ive watched every single episode you do. The knowledge you provide in each episode is just on another level of quality ive never seen or heard anywhere before. Its like you just truly UNDERSTAND how to teach people. I don't know what it is, but it must be to do with your philosophical, zen like approach. You mentioned you meditate, so I guess that has something to do with it. So zen man, so clear and creative. Its so good how you can make a subject which so many approach with black & white, rigid, left minded thinking into a truly interesting art form, which of course - it always has been. Its that approach which really makes these lessons, for me, sink right into my brain with ease and pleasure.
Thank you for what you do
p.s - the music you make and demonstrate in your videos is top notch too, i find it so hard to find tutorials where its actually music I like being used. Its always trap, metal, or some other genre I don't like and I find it hard to relate the techniques to the genres I make. But for me im into new wave, shoe gaze, 70s rock, pysch, synth pop - more underground music - so to hear music like yours on here and knowing I can relate to the techniques directly with the stuff I make too, is another winner. Big ups to you mate
