Man, ive just got to say this. Ive been following your channel for a while now and ive watched every single episode you do. The knowledge you provide in each episode is just on another level of quality ive never seen or heard anywhere before. Its like you just truly UNDERSTAND how to teach people. I don't know what it is, but it must be to do with your philosophical, zen like approach. You mentioned you meditate, so I guess that has something to do with it. So zen man, so clear and creative. Its so good how you can make a subject which so many approach with black & white, rigid, left minded thinking into a truly interesting art form, which of course - it always has been. Its that approach which really makes these lessons, for me, sink right into my brain with ease and pleasure. Thank you for what you do p.s - the music you make and demonstrate in your videos is top notch too, i find it so hard to find tutorials where its actually music I like being used. Its always trap, metal, or some other genre I don't like and I find it hard to relate the techniques to the genres I make. But for me im into new wave, shoe gaze, 70s rock, pysch, synth pop - more underground music - so to hear music like yours on here and knowing I can relate to the techniques directly with the stuff I make too, is another winner. There are times when I'm an assclown, and there are times when I'm a sensitive nurturing mentor. I'm everything people say I am, because their reality of me is true for them. I feel this video accurately targets the long-regarded concept of the 'musicality' of a compressor and how it can truly alter the tone and mood of a sound. Arguably one of the most concise and beautful explanations of the topic!
From a teacher perspective: I love the aproach! You really take your time altough it doesn't feel very time consuming. Everything you're taking your time for is important and valuable. Very nice! and from an amateur producer perspective: Thanks! I'll be subscribing because of it :D
Gosh, I've watched hours of mixing tutorial, and yet, the most impactful ones are these short TH-cam videos from Gregory. Thanks a lot for this video! My mixes start getting better after watching a lot of your videos. What makes your video great is you don't make it like the usual "tutorial video" but you are trying to make people understand. Kudos, I hope you start a mixing class :)
Pretty sure I commented on this years ago but I still come back to it. This is hands down the best audio compression video on TH-cam. The sources material you created (I am a big fan of Sneaky Little Devil - it's my creative muse music) perfectly illustrates the various compressor controls. It's like your whole life has lead to creating the perfect compressor and the perfect compressor tutorial. I don't know what to say after that.
Hello, Gregory. This is a truly stunning channel. Mesmerizing, beautiful videos that could stand on their own even if they did not have any technical content... but the technical/musical content is incredibly amazing, and so simply explained. As another commenter said, you are like the very best teachers: not hiding behind jargon, and giving your hard earned wisdom away, as the nicest possible present to anybody interested in music. I love each of your videos both for the presentation and vibe as well as for the musical and technical quality. I know these are very hard times for artists and musicians, and I can only guess you have also been affected. However, I wish you the very best, I think you more than deserve to succeed and prosper despite the current situation. Thank you very much and I hope you continue your incredible work for the foreseable future.
Exactly what I felt, honestly I couldn't have written it better myself. Thank you David for putting this into words so well and Thank You Gregory for this amazing amazing channel and these lessons, so so grateful for this 🙏
Gregory, as a teacher, you knocked it out of the park with this complicated (to me) subject. As an artist, you added an incredibly interesting dimension to a technical topic. When I saw "Geeks" in the title, I wasn't expecting such an artistic layering of comments like texture, mood, etc. Thanks to the TH-cam algorithms on photography -> video -> audio, I ended up here. I've often wondered why good drums sound the way they do on recordings. Now I know. Thanks for sharing your expertise and talent! 👍

Thank you for what you do
p.s - the music you make and demonstrate in your videos is top notch too, i find it so hard to find tutorials where its actually music I like being used. Big ups to you mate

Thanks for that, all the kind words, it's truly appreciated!
It's always Trap songs and lessons by kids with recycled knowledge from other TH-camrs.
This channel is incredible as you say. I turn off to the science behind these things so teaching it like art really helps
Ask 10 mixers what compression “Does” and you get 20 different opinions. This was really... really informative.
This guy is truly fascinating !! If i had to be left with only one youtube channel concerning music and studio stuff, i would definitely choose this channel by far !!! Awesome content and insight ! I wish you could post a new video 2 or 3 times a week but anyway, i would never have enough so a massive thank you for such quality of your content and for the way you teach us. Kush audio rules !!! Greetz from Paris, France 👍♥️♥️♥️👍
I've always said, french productions have the best transients :-)
@@TheHouseofKushTV From now on all I'll be hearing from my drums staring at me on the screen is: "Shape me. Shape me like one of your French productions" :)
Been a bedroom music producer for about 4 years now and I've watched countless youtube... this is by far one of the best ones I've ever seen
"What you think of my art is your business, not mine." Wow, what you said early on in the video, so casually mentioned, really resonated with me.
Right on! Credit where credit is due, I stole that, can't remember who from but maybe Byron Katie, she said "What other people think of me is none of my business." I instantly made it a mantra, it changed my life!
@@TheHouseofKushTV One of the bigger reasons I started subscribing was how you weave a bit philosophy into your vids. Helps me keep my mind straight when I step into the recording realms. Thanks!
@@TheHouseofKushTV It's one thing to say it but a totally different thing to MEAN and live it. I feel you.
I've subscribed and watched a ton of Mix With the Masters, Nail the Mix, Produce Like a Pro, PureMix, etc... and this turned out to be the best audio production tutorial I've ever seen. I thought I knew compression but now I know it in a far deeper way.
I really enjoyed this "exercise". Instant sub
BTW, using a decent and appropriate sound example as you did here is rare among youtube mixing tutorials.
It’s videos like this that make house of kush one of the best production channels on TH-cam
wow that was amazing
Things you can say both after sex and watching this tutorial
This is how to teach!
That’s exactly what I was about to type lmao
I am attracted to that man now
“Who is this ass clown and why is he going to teach me compression? I build compressors.” - Savage!
That’s the second I subscribed
Lmao this line hooked me.

@@alanloya623 me too
This has saved me a heap of coin.
I’m going to call my shrink tomorrow, there’s no need to see him anymore. Everything is going to turn out just fine.
What could possibly go wrong??
This is the best video on how to hear a compressor.
I've watched hours and hours of videos about compression - including a 2 hr lecture from Puig. This is, BY FAR, the closest I've ever come to thinking that I truly understand and HEAR compression. I've not seen anybody else mention being able to hear the attack better at lower volumes -- but it's super-true. Brilliant. Thank you!
I keep coming back to this video and understand it better and better with the more experience that I have. Thank you, again.
Truly a masterclass! 2 years of music production and engineering degree and 26 years of messing about... and it took you 20min to really help it hit home. Apreeeeeesh
I take offense to the phrase "ass clown" when referring to you. I understand that you are just trying to be humble, but we love your style of presentation. And you are the official/unofficial master philosopher of music production.
That's... incredibly kind of you to say, thank you! And I'm beyond grateful for the support of this amazing little community that's coming together. And on top of that, I find that owning the worst things people say about me is incredibly empowering, because it's all true, just as it's all not-true. There are times when I'm an assclown, and there are times when I'm a sensitive nurturing mentor. I'm everything people say I am, because their reality of me is true for them. And I love myself completely, or at least I'm working on it and getting better at it all the time. Truly, I recommend agreeing with every troll you encounter, IME acknowledging the kernel of truth in every perspective is beyond liberating. But it's not for everyone, and I respect that! 💛
Man you gave us the clariphonic- Salute!
@@TheHouseofKushTV Well, thank you for the reply, and no thank you because I'm sorry..oh but then I'm not sorry (lol). I get it. I know where you're at (consciousness-wise). I've been through the journey as well. And you're the inspiration...get it!!...journey...inspiration. Seriously, thank you for loving yourself enough to take the journey to know yourself to the point that has brought us all so much of whatever it may mean and manifest itself for each individual. And I would appreciate it if you could tell me the heck i just said. (Ha) (smiles). Take care. 🌈🎛🎶

I saw your video first time .... I never heard compression and i thought to skip this video too in the start .... But there was some kind of genuine vibe because of which i still just kept watching ....
You proved yourself
Thank you sir, and it seems you also have proven yourself... once you can hear something, it is inevitable that you will master it :-)
His voice mix in the video is a COMPLETE EXAMPLE of a compressed vocal. --- his own recorded voice is seriously "attacked"
The Matthew McConaughey of compressors over here 😂
I know alot of folks already said it, but this is one of the best compression demonstrations ever. Thanks for making this!
Easily the best video I've ever watched on compression.
Mr Scott is putting out so high quality content here. Worth more than a year mixwiththemasters subscription imo.
This video may be one of the most informative and well put-together lessons I've ever seen.
Thanks, more of the same in the works! But I'm slooow, so stick around and thanks for your patience!!
I’ve been waiting for this video my whole life.
Dude...this is by far one of the best and most informative videos on compression ever made. 27,000 likes and 143 ignorant haters proves that. You're like the Bob Ross of mixing.
Google popped this video into my feed and i can't thank you enough for your work here. Started checking out your channel, subscribed and you are my current youtube hero. Fantastic content. Zero bs, just solid content backed by solid experience with a perfect delivery - clarity, focus, sensitivity and passion. What a blessing.
Awesome, thank you!
Hard to explain how much I love not just your work but you as a human being. Clever yet humble, soulful, you teach us not just about production but more about cherishing music and life. Thank you brother !
THE best compression lesson on internet.
I am finally able to see how to play with emotions in the music using sound engineering ! Greg is a legend.
This was the Bob Ross Compression Video I needed to finally understand. Thank you, sir.
The best lesson ever, listening to these changes mad me smile for the first time when using a compressor, for me release was very difficult to hear and control.
Many thanks Greg, love u man
How on earth did a video about drum compression make me rethink my life
This tutorial is just magic, felt like an asmr session..plus the best musical tips i ever got
That's the most Kush I've ever seen in one place. Truly the House of Kush. Love it.
David, you made my day with your kind and generous words, thank you and I'm glad what I'm doing is helping you!!
Exactly what I felt, honestly I couldn't have written it better myself. Thank you David for putting this into words so well and Thank You Gregory for this amazing amazing channel and these lessons, so so grateful for this 🙏
This was pure emotion and vibes. I love how this tunes into the passion of music rather than just the technicality of it like every other channel
This was the clearest application shown for a compressor I’ve EVER SEEN. Thank you for this!
