There are some awesome color capsule wardrobe videos on youtube though, but yeah its definetly harder to do then the boring neutrals - and no, I won't get rid of my flower print skirt just because it does not match with every single other item I have, thank you very much.

A co-worker of mine decided with her new baby that she wanted to simplify her life so she only wears black and white. This way, she could do a load of darks, whites, and the baby's clothes. Sounds a bit crazy, but it works for her. I did the opposite, I switched all of my tops to colorful prints to hide the stains and fingerprints !!! Do what works and is best for you! Tip! If you love it, buy two!

I think that’s genius of her! And good idea for hiding stains! I like a minimal wardrobe because I don’t like making decisions but probably most of all I just end up with one because I am really picky! Thanks for your comment!

I do want to explain the concept of capsule wardrobe. It is for people who want to simplify their life when it comes to choosing an outfit every morning, and learn how to dress well with less. Shop smarter, and not more. It’s learning how to get rid of things that don’t fit our personal style, to wear 100% of our wardrobe and LOVE it!
Let’s face it, a lot of us have tons of clothes we never wear. So a capsule is here to help you have less options, for you to wear all of your items.
I don’t believe there is anything wrong with wearing the same thing a few times, that’s the goal, to maximize everything you owe and wear ALL of your wardrobe.
Now, you really don’t have to wear the same shirt everyday day. My system is, if I have 10 tops, I will wear them one by one. 10 Days have passed until I have to go back to my first one.
What I like to do is once I wear something, I put it back in my closet and wear a different item. I do that until I have worn all of them once. Then I go back to the first and just pair it with different things. Let’s say I wore a white blouse with a cardigan and jeans, next time I’ll wear my white blouse with a skirt and a blazer. It really doesn’t feel like I dressed the same. You have to find the system that works for you. If you love to have different types of clothing, like pants, skirts, shorts, skirts, overall ect… it’s supper easy to have so much fun with mixing and matching. If you only like to wear pants for example, then you can play with different colors or cuts of pants.
And because you are the one creating the capsule , it works for YOU and your lifestyle, you can absolutely make a capsule wardrobe that is full of colors and patterns. Only you know what your essentials are, and what your basics are. YOU also get to choose how many items you want in your capsule wardrobe. If you like options and still want 15 tops for variety, you can absolutely have that. The problem isn’t the concept of capsule wardrobe, it’s what’s being said that you should have in it or shouldn’t when really, you’re the only person who can make this decision. It’s your personal style that has to be seen through your capsule. I promise you, my capsule wardrobe looks nothing like yours. Because I know exactly how to represent myself the best through a limited amount of clothing and it has my personality. 😊
My best advice, is to take everything you see on social media as Inspiration, not a so called « rule » to follow. If you really like the concept of capsule wardrobe, but all you see on social media is capsules that don’t inspire you at all and represent you, go digging and search for inspiration of people that have a capsule closer to your style. That inspire you to be more creative. A capsule isn’t supposed to put you in a box. Try to create new ways of wearing the clothes you already own, edit your closet, see what’s really missing. But do not buy right away, take your time. Building your personal style is a looong process, it shouldn’t be rushed.
I hope this helps somebody! Have a wonderful day!! ❤❤

Finally common sense prevails ! Thank you ! 💙 As a baby boomer , I grew up w/ " coordinates " to mix 'n match w/ basics - NOT a capsule !! Choose colors you like & do variations on those for variety . Like the idea of buying multiples , within reason of course , such as white tees or the same tee you love in a few colors ; nice to have two white shirts , maybe a bit different in style , to alternate if that's a staple for you . Also , w/ the capsule wardrobe thing - don't those people ever do real life activities like yard work , painting , dog walking in bad weather , sweat-inducing seasonal house cleaning , etc. ?? Yesterday I started an early Spring garage cleaning ( purge ! ) but not in a cashmere sweater , linen pants & booties - my outfit worn : ancient jeans so thin you could read thru them , a tee the dog had napped on & very well used hiking boots that actually are worn on trails ! Welcome to the real world ... 😂

Tysm. As a mom with a lively toddler I can't wear an item twice because ... Insert one million reasons here. Also I do clean my household and it's so messy especially in hot summer weather. I really struggle finding an aesthetic or capsule wardrobe style and I think that's why, because it's so out of touch with reality for most people's lifestyle

@@sewingwithjazz Agree ! A capsule wardrobe ( a few versatile coordinates ) for " non - home " wear is nice to have ready for special occasions / church , etc. Even w/ my VERY casual country , outdoor lifestyle , I like to coordinate the various seasonal tops , socks , sneakers , etc. I wear w/ basic black yoga pants , jeans , hiking pants . Example - some cute basic tees in your favorite colors are a nice " upgrade " from a dull athletic gray hand-me-down fr.the husband's dresser drawer . 😂

@@playingthemomgame I think its not for everyone. Sure, the concept sounds great, but it only works if you have just one style (or styles that intersect closely) and don't have singular favorite outfits. I do enjoy too many styles and I get sad if I can't wear them all depending on my mood. Also, all the basic items might mix and match with everything else, but it does not matter, because I gravitate to have a few favorite combos that I wear always and will prefer over other combinations.

That bit about the white t-shirt is so spot on. And many of the same people will also tell you to declutter multiples and they'll feel bad about owning 5 white t-shirts and many pairs of jeans...but like...you wear those things the MOST, why would you NOT have multiples??? It's honestly crazy, and I generally like the idea of capsule wardrobes. They've just become way too specific and "one size fits all".

Planning for a capsule wardrobe made me really stressed and miserable. I found it so stressful, and I felt really limited. I missed out on a lot of time with my family and friends. I have ADHD so I was really hyperfocused in getting the "perfect" capsule wardrobe items, which took months and months to curate and was super expensive. It feels so liberating to walk into stores now and to buy what I like! Now I have variety! And likely I will have clothes that WILL last me longer because I'm not wearing them ALL the time

My problem with the whole capsule wardrobe videos I see on the internet is that all the clothes are for the same level of formality. I need casual clothes that look put together and elegant. I need dressy clothes for church, restaurants, and concerts. I need messy clothes for camping, hiking, and kayaking, I need at least one evening gown for the 2 or 3 formal events I attend. I need a sparkly cocktail dress for parties and special occasions. The capsule wardrobe people do not address this. Do these people lead bland lives of little variety? I think they do.
Here's one thing I do. Whenever I'm buying an article of clothing, I have to have at least four things already in my closet that I can wear with it.

I think my people including content creators get the concept capsule wardrobe wrong. A capsule wardrobe is just a collection of fewer items that are versatile and should fit one's personal style so it can include color and patterns if that's your thing. Also I don't think anyone is wearing the same shirt 5 times a week.

And then there are those of us who are quite happy with a "uniform". I've never been any sort of fashion chaser and I spent my adult life in an actual uniform. After I retired, I tried out assorted colors and types, but found it was too much crap to keep up with and required too much thought. I then found my civilian "uniform": black pants + black or dark blue t-shirt (white is *so* not my friend). I have a limited assortment of colorful over-shirts (think Hawaiian or similar) to create variety when I think I need it. No brain bits needed on clothing most days and everything literally goes together. Of course, I still have work-out clothes (also uniform-like) as well as "it's okay to be messy" clothes, but a finite amount. Round this out with 3-4 wedding/formal outfits and my closet is VERY manageable--there's actually less on my side of the closet than on my husband's side. Oh, and I don't care if people notice that I'm wearing essentially the same thing everyday.

You bring sanity to this concept. I just can't do it. Maybe it isn't me after all who tinks it's hard. Though I think I found the perfect clothing line for business and travel clothing that also works for most everyday situations, doesn't look boring, and can easily be worn multiple times before washing. Something comfortable, attractive and also scales across the wardrobe. Mostly can be wadded into a suitcase and come out looking great. So I'm a big fan of White House Black Market. I often pick up my favorite pieces on eBay, or other online or outlet sites at a fraction of the price.

I had landed at around a 40 item, year round wardrobe..... consider it a capsule, consider it coordinated, I just consider my laundry generally under control..... lots of color, I just don't have all the colors. Bright cerulean blue, burgundy, teal (dark and light), purple.... navy, greys, and 1 beige shirt I inherited from my Dad. I paint in whatever I am wearing, or nothing at all if I know the kids won't be home..... just like I did when I had a 6x6 walk in closet that couldn't hold all my clothes, and my kids' were bursting at the seams of their closets too. The difference? I'm more likely to get around to trying to get the paint out of something now because I'm more likely to notice it..... and I likely won't get paint on something else in the process. 😂 Definitely agree that I wouldn't try to start a capsule by buying things. I started downsizing by removing stuff that totally didn't fit. Then I picked 1 neutral (at the time I chose black), so then I could declutter all the navy, all the brown, ect. Picked 3 accent colors that already existed in my closet (I started trying to work Project 333, so I didnt declutter the accent colors I just packed away...... until I realized I didnt wear them anyway. Lol). Having gone from an office environment for work to a uniform dress kitchen, I wound up at about 4 pieces when things shut down in 2020. Declutter into about together wardrobe! It is soooooo much easier than trying to build one. I didnt intend to be at 4 pieces..... I just changed sizes, or things wore out, and I didn't prioritize replacing. 3/16 will be 3 years since I left the kitchen. I'm still trying to find my non-office, put together style. Hoping to land at about 18 pieces.... cause more than 2 layers suck. Lol.

Thanks for making this video, I really relate to all of the points. I find that I often get bored of my clothing, so a capsule wardrobe would be hell for me... the same top over and over and over. I'd be sick of it after a week (if it didn't stink from not being washed!!) I realise that boredom for me is a big thing, so if I buy a new item, I try to donate 1 old item of clothing so I don't just end up hoarding clothes that I don't wear any more (a "one in, one out" sort of rule). I regularly have wardrobe clear-outs to make sure the items in my wardrobe are items that I like and will wear, not just old stuff I got bored of years ago. I prefer organising my wardrobe for the season (e.g. put away big knit jumpers at the beginning of Spring) which helps keep things organised and not just a huge pile of clothes.

To me, the idea of a capsule wardrobe is like the idea of living in a tiny house: part of me fantasizes about it, but honestly it doesn't fit my lifestyle AT ALL. Also, like you said, so many of these capsule items are so boring and colorless. Actually, there is a youtuber I like who only wears neutrals, but she wears such edgy unique designs--that stuff is far too expensive for me. And yet, I am creating a capsule bc I'm going to be working abroad for 4 mos and I know it will be next to impossible to buy clothes or shoes there. I also have to look professional. My strategy has basically been to thrift everything! I started w my key items and as I pack, I'm like, "Aw, come on, throw another pair of pants in there. Why not? Maybe I do need one more bag." and before I know it I have more things packed than I planned on. But it'll be interesting to see what I actually wear and what doesn't get a lot of wear. It's an experiment.

I got interested in capsule wardrobes because I obsessively wear my 'favorite' clothes everyday like I don't own anything else. It also helps me get dressed faster and I KNOW how I'm going to look and feel in it without thinking.
Some practices I'm incorporating or already do:
    1. No graphic tshirts OR just a couple of them (I'm a little obsessed with my You're on Mute shirt!)
    2. Limited number of bottoms: 2-3 pair of jeans, 2-3 pair of dress pants, etc. (I have like 20 pairs of jeans and go crazy remembering which fit I want to wear on different days)
    3. Organize my closet by colors and narrow down the choices (I get overwhelmed with too many choices, but I keep shopping for me!)
    4. Not too many prints ... using a lot of solid colors is more classic and let's you use the pieces more often (if needed) ... I figured this out from shopping at Eddie Bauer. They sell the same types of clothes all the time because they are basic, non-discerning, and well made.
    5. I don't buy outfits! Matchy stuff goes out of style and you really don't wear it.
    6. I'm applying 1-5 across my wardrobe: lazy clothes, dressy clothes, street wear, etc.
    7. Feel free to buy as many boots, shoes, sneakers, sandals, etc. as your heart desires, LOL

Capsule wardrobes are great for travelling. I think i did this to a degree before i knew what a capsule wardrobe was so i could have case space in case i bought souvenirs for people.

    I love this video!
Focusing on picking my "uniform" colors and style pieces first helped making my capsule much easier and fun
With the uniform i picked what colors make me feel most comfortable and beautiful (e.g. black, blue, red, purple) then i picked clothing styles i feel most comfortable and beautiful in (maxi dress, wrap dress, form fitting tee or tank with high waist trouser or jean, button blouse or crop cardigan with high waist trouser or jean, black skinny jeans with knee boots and oversized sweater or hoodie or blazer, etc)
Life is easier now. If its not a color and style piece on my uniform list i don't buy it and I know every day I have outfits that make me feel my best

I have aa capsule wardrobe just for winter thats black blue and purple with a random emerald green cardi thrown in . I go through the same 2 cardigans and 3 sweaters and black tees and 4 pants and a skirt or two . in summer i live in the same 4 pants 2 skirts a handful of blouses occasional tees from winter and a couple dresses .

I’ve thought the exact same thing about the neutral color thing. The first few vids I saw on capsule wardrobes, I thought, oh that’s nice and simple and classy….then after scrolling through 400 more that looked exactly the same I was like OH MY GOSH DOES NO OKE WEAR COLOR?!? Then I found like 2 videos of a couple ladies who had “colorful capsule wardrobes”.
Haha the whole things has just gotten hilarious and sometimes ridiculous.
Humans get so extreme on things.
Let’s just focus on the main things.
Spending/ a little less so we don’t have so much excess.
Buying what you like and will wear.
Simplicity but also what you enjoy.
What’s also funny is how many of these capsule wardrobe ppl always claim that having less clothes makes deciding what to wear effortless and quick.
HA. These ppl spend probably the MOST time on their clothes obsessing for hours over what to buy and how to create the perfect wardrobe.
    Wow. #firstworldproblems

Another boomer here, No offense to the minimalist folks, if it works for them, good on 'em. I just questions whether it actually works for anyone outside of their Instagram pics. The capsule wardrobe concept is very useful for a trip where you are travelling with only a carry on. For a week or two, it's just fine. But as a lifestyle? Heck, I LIKE colour! My personality is not all black, white, and beige. Also, the capsule wardrobe's folk proudly display on social media seem geared towards a life that includes work, partying, shopping, and standing in front of cell phone cameras. Maybe I'm just old and tired, but I spend WAY more time tending my veggie garden and lounging in front of my TV watching MASH reruns than going out dancing in elegant clothes. And if you don't work outside the house, you can go for days without venturing out into a nasty wet cold Canadian winter. So where are all the old comfy sweats and leggings that you got for $4.50 in March because they had Christmas ornaments on them? If you're home alone, those work just fine from October until April, they're really cheap, and they stretch with you after one too many packets of senbai with your warming cup of hot sake! Capsule wardrobes are brilliant for carry-on-only travel, but I have never seen one yet that fits in with the actual daily lifestyle of anyone I've ever known. Perhaps it's time to relegate them to the same forgotten bin as "aspirational groceries" that get thrown away every week and carefully origamied underwear drawers that get messed up every time you do the laundry!

Great video! I like the idea of a smaller closet and wearing what I own. I also don't need 247 outfits. I need about a 2 week rotation between work, church and home. Even at that, it means things are only getting worn a few times a month. I realized how little one needs when I started doing a monthly capsule - no buying new, I just swap in and out things at the beginning of every month based on what I've got coming up next few weeks and the weather. That was eye-opening. Lots of things never got worn. I have too many work and church clothes and not enough casual at home clothing. Finally, it made so clear to me how much I have. How I don't need anything else at this time and how much variety can be gained by the introduction of just one or two new tops/dresses/bottoms.

This video makes my day! Love your perfect sense of reality 😂 Starting with what you already have is the most sustainable thing you can do! When I had my colors and style done, my stylist a great rule of thumb is to make sure that a new piece goes with 3 or 4 items you already have. Investing in good basics is another great tip to make your clothes work a little better for you. Indeed: no need for overconsumption at all! ❤

I match pieces b/c there’s one top & bottom in my wardrobe that look best together, then they are worn, washed & hung together. I never feel like I don’t have something to wear or stress out over what goes w/each piece. Keep it simple

I would definitely have different outfits with a white top as the base: once with some nice pants and I'd spill my lunch on it. a nice centrally located grease stain. Second I'll pair that stained white shirt with a cardigan to conceal the stain, third we have the white shirt under a sweatshirt to go shopping but then it gets too hot and I take the sweatshirt off but now I know everybody can see the stain on the shirt from lunch two weeks ago, and fourth I now have a nice white partially stained shirt to clean house in 😂

It looks cold to me considering its below 20 C a good chunk of the year here and then up to 30 for another chunk so it is all very uncomfortable, our tshirt season is like 2 months. I go from crop tops to heavy wool sweater over a long sleeve. I found the most helpful thing was to organize the colour palette and especially for the essentials/basics and fit the extra colours around that, so any colour works, its just the tone has to go. Like home decor kindof. Its less to think about when you get dressed which is the best part to me. You can also experiment by just packing up some of your wardrobe and choosing the ones that match together for your season that you think will be enough, that way you can always reach into the packed bags and pull things out or decide to get rid of or buy a few essentials to make it work. I find this saves clothes. Everything lasts longer. Its easy to tailor to the weather or how things are fitting too.

before the aesthetics committee jumped on the capsule = minimalism bandwagon people did have capsule wardrobes with color but it just wasn't a "sexy" formula that could be commodified . so once it could be commodified by certain colors type of clothes etc it became mainstream and hand in hand with that minimalism aesthetic of having less but a certain look. I've been trying to be minimalist for 8 years now . what i've learned is its being intentional about what you bring into your life taking care of the things you own and not keeping things that don't bring value to your life. not a certain " look " although I do day dream still of throwing away all my families stuff most days for that more paired down look I won't Lie

  • @8evanesse

I’ll never be a fashionista, because once I find an item of clothing that fits well and is comfortable, I buy it in every color I love. Then my clothes are basically a uniform, most of the time it’s the same outfit, just in different colors that I mix and match to not get bored. I’m sure my friends have noticed, but are too polite to call me out. In addition, I own absolutely nothing in white; it’s see-through, it accentuates all my fat bits, and it’s a pain in the butt to try to keep white. I honestly don’t get the obsession with the white T-shirt. I won’t even get white socks or underwear. Seriously, white is banned in my house. 😂

🤣 This is like describing one's ex with mentioning only their faults. You did make me laugh. And you are right that this is a concept that has gotten a LOT of play and is also often misapplied. I honestly think it was originally meant to help women entering the workforce to select pieces that would work together, but became a minimalist religion. I do think having multiple tops that go with each bottom is smart, and I think having enough to get through a laundry cycle each season is important. 😉
