I am very content with not having thrown away clothing I couldn’t wear for 3 years after weight gain and now weight loss. If I would have followed this advice, I would have had to buy several new wardrobes, instead now I can rewear stuff and expand with just a couple of trendy items
Yes, we have to be more discerning than just time. I kept a lot before menopause but couldn’t wear them because I ballooned in weight 😩. Now I’ve got it off, I’ve got them. But I do agree with decluttering; we can learn from how we mostly only wear 20% of our stuff!
I agree, especially when you have timeless, well-quality stuff. E.g. I am a sucker for Ralph Lauren jackets, and I have a couple of them. Though I live in a warmer climate, we have a couple of cold weeks here and there, and it's pretty irregular, so I never know when I will need them. They all look impeccable, fit me like a second skin, and when the cold comes I am very happy to have them. I would rather say it's about keeping a reasonable amount of useful pieces than about decluttering for decluttering
I think we do have to be cost conscious because things are more expensive, and especially if we are in a life stage where the body is changing and not steady. I also have some things I’m glad I kept!
@@Kate-lk6twTotally agree! Menopause is huge rolling waves of changes, 6-month rule is ridiculous. And once we (mostly) understand our new selves we are capable of shedding weight gains, but it is a multi year not month process.
Could you film an updated wardrobe tour video please? I get so much inspiration from it and would love to see which items you currently have, hear the reasons why you love and therefore keep them and how you store them in your wardrobe at the moment😊
Modern washing machines have a wool programme. I wash all my cashmere jumpers this way: on cold so between 0 and 20 degree celsius, and tumble only on 400. Use detergent for wool and silk, no softener necessary. Then lay out flat to dry. Simple, easy and perfect each time.
Right, they even have a handwashing program, I don't wash anything by hand but I still own clothing in all kinds of materials and fits, 'cause my washing mashine can do it all. I even managed to wash a costume that was supposed to be brought to a cleaning service instead of being mashine washed. I'm not a rich girl so there's no way that I pay someone to dry clean my stuff PLUS I am very sensitive to all kind of chemicals, so no thank you. My mashine did the job and the costume turned out clean and in shape - no problems. I just try to not get it dirty or sweaty so I don't need to risk throwing it in the washer toooo many times 😂
I think it's important to point out get rid of does not have to mean forever just vacuum pack or have a storage suitcase or a spare wardrobe somewhere that's not in your everyday wardrobe and draws just because you have not worn it in twelve months doesn't mean you won't and things that go out of style always come back I try to have one of my two wardrobes with the current season items in it and the other wardrobe is for stuff I don't reach for all the time the the rest is stored away ❤
Back in the day, if I’d decluttered my straight jeans, when skinnies came, I’d have had to buy them again. Trends are not me, but very dated shapes don’t thrill me. So I keep things without wearing them for a year or more, because I will wear them again. It’s good to go deeper than time.
Great video and advice. Thank you. You are an inspiration to all of us. A famous Japanese lady says when we need to de-clutter the first place to start, it is with our clothing. It's really helpful and genuine here.
Last year I invested in a beautiful, sophisticated winter wardrobe. (I’m from SoCal and spent my whole life in board shorts and T’s). The issue was, we had just moved to Phoenix, AZ where there are three seasons: hot, hotter, hottest. So I now have a closet full of expensive things that I just don’t have the heart to dispose of yet. I’m living on hope! 😅😅😅
I have simplified my wardrobe as I changed from a formal to a more relaxed dressing company. I am going thru another change and am trying to be creative with what I have. Your simple suggestions are easy to follow.
I cant tell you how many videos I've watched about decluttering my wardrobe and house and I just can't get it done. Then I found you! I've a way to go but just in the last few weeks I've let so much go! Keep making your videos please ...everyone of them keeps me moving forward in this journey! ❤
Love this video and you inspire me to finally sell on a few pairs of boots that I love but just don’t fit well. I’d be cautious about selling jumpers that need hand washing though. I have a few cashmere jumpers that need handwashing. But overall I know they save me energy, time and money as they don’t smell as quickly so need less washing and they don’t bobble compared to acrylic jumpers
Comfort is essential, in clothes as well as footwear. I suffered for years from horrible skin rashes (and overheating) in my budget-brand (like H&M) clothing before I learned I’m allergic to synthetic fibers (plastics). All those clothes, including blends of natural fibers and synthetics, had to go. I only buy natural-fiber fabric/material items now, it solved these problems. I do wear a lot of luxury fabrics, but I have mo lifestyle constraints, I don’t even cook or clean at this stage of my life. They are a lot more expensive, but well worth it. I’m also very selective about trends, I prefer to buy classic styles that I can wear, ideally, forever. So, I passed on recent trends like shackets, very oversized clothing, transparent skirts, etc. I love this season’s trends, including the colors, because they are based on classic designs, for the most part.
I’ve make mistakes using the 2 year rule. I’m in my sixties and fortunately my size hasn’t changed. Fashion does and I’m now re wearing those boot legs I kept from 10 years ago! I never give away coats now. They always come in handy especially when family visit.
The more duplicates the less you have to wash... can save energy for the washin process. If you wear the same style most of the time duplicates are ok. (white blouses for business looks..)
I agree. I have duplicates on purpose, not by accident. It also lessens my anxiety about stuff getting ruined through stains, cat claws, etc. If one gets ruined, I have another. Not every year is a good fashion year for me; some years have nothing I want, so it isn't an option to just replace. This year is another year when sweaters and regular blazers are too short for me and oversize ones look ridiculous on me.
I think it can be helpful to have duplicates if it’s something you wear a lot or it’s part of your work uniform, or course. Everyone’s got different lifestyles. 🤍
I have a full drawer full of leggings! How many is enough? I bought them during the pandemic when I was home all day every day and wore leggings and tshirts everyday because no one was seeing me. Obviously now I actually get dressed in normal clothes most days so I really need to declutter that drawer.
Yes various things that do not work for the current lifestyle…. There we go! I need to down size so very much.. I feel if it was given to me it is mine and to do with them as I choose. They are now mine.
Shrinking does NOT mean the piece is ruined. If it has felted, then use the fabric to cut out hats, mittens, etc. If it's just shrunk, give it to someone who will fit it and a thrift store. If all else fails, make zokins.
The problem with my wardrobe is I'm between sizes ( losing weight after having a baby 8 months ago), I also have special occasion dresses, clothes that depend on weather (I live in a 4 season state). Those are easily things that could go in the I haven't worn in 6 months or a year category :( What do I do in that situation?
Same situation here :) I've adjusted that a little like this: Before a season starts I turn all hangers backwards and after the season I analyze why i haven't worn things (maybe it's for events, the weather wasn't right, the occasion didn't occur etc) so it let them sit for another year until the season comes again. Before a new I check if all items still fit and if they don't I check why they don't fit. In your circumstances with having a baby and lots of change you might need more variation of different sizes because it can be frustrating either way: missing something in the future that you love but got rid of because it didn't fit in the moment.. but also keeping things that can be frustrating when they don't fit and just sit there. Also sometimes clothes fit differently depending on your menstrual cycle so I still keep them for different weeks because i can wear them, just not every week equally 😂
Keep them for a while. Let nature do its thing. Once you're back to a stable shape that's close to your goal / "natural" shape, you can consider decluttering in my opinion. But for now, find a place that's a little out of reach and check them once in a while (every season) The real question besides decluttering is "do I like it" "if I stained it, would I panick and do everything I can to save it or be kind of relieved I can get rid of it".
Special clothes are something I don't get rid of until they're waaayyy out of style. If you have the room, keep them. This decluttering thing often goes too far; when it isn't practical, that's too far. I don't see it as a game. If I have too much in my closet, I put my good extras in bins. Anything that isn't good enough to save can go away.
Hi Sarah! That makes sense especially after having a baby. You could definitely keep those items that don’t currently fit stored away for a while and revisit later. It’s not about being strict with decluttering, but rather finding the balance that works for you. I love the suggestions in the previous comments too 🤍
Well, though, I agree with the idea of a clutter-free home, and I am working on one too, lol; I don't understand why influencers like you talk about the clothes that allegedly need to be decluttered because they allegedly don't fit anymore, or you don't like how you look in them. Obviously, you are a beautiful young woman in great shape, so no necessity to be too critical here. It rather seems to me that you simply made a shopping mistake (no necessity to be too critical here either; we've all been there, and done it, lol). Just calmly admit you purchased something that you actually don't like. I think your current closet looks great and seems to be filled with smart clothes that probably fit you from any viewpoint (lifestyle, season of life, aesthetic, etc.).
I say I fine when I’m not fine because most times I don’t know why I am not fine or how to explain why I’m not fine or I simply don’t feel like I’m in a safe enough environment to talk about it.
Ive noticed when I hold on to clothes due to weight gain or loss, pregnancy etc, when I want to wear them again, they arent in style anymore and look dated for the most part
Sorry I think this video is a bit boring. All the tips are already on the internet and not really original. Makes it even more boring expanding a long story around them which doesn’t matter or apply to me.

Its best not to hang woolens on hangers, they start to sag. Best to fold and keep in drawers.
