Just a little hint, masking fluid is made from latex so if like me you’re allergic to latex you don’t want to use your fingers to spread it over the larger areas.

Glad you found me and sorry for not responding sooner. No, I did not hand draw this. I used transfer paper and traced it on the paper. So much easier. Ah...I didn't know there were actual tools for applying the masking fluid! I just used it for the first time recently and ruined a perfectly good paintbrush!😢 What do you call those things so I can get some online?
Tim Brown Hi Tim, they weren't originally to be used for masking fluid. I just use them and they are fabulous and no more gummed up paint brushes EVER!! You can see more information on them on my video (its a short one) Tools Needed for Pouring Watercolors Part 1.
+Tim Brown If you can't find the tools Linda uses, try an old paintbrush or buy some cheap paintbrushes. When using masking fluid you must coat the brush with soapy water, this prevents the masking fluid from gumming up your brush. I have cut a small piece of bar soap and have it in a small container that I wet down just enough to coat the brush then you dip it into the masking fluid. Depending on how much you need to cover you will need to wipe the brush with a paper towel and re-dip it in the soap followed by masking fluid, as needed. As you work you will learn how often this needs to be done by the way the brush feels. I like to pour the masking fluid in a smaller container (or the lid) when I am using it. It does not take much so just pour a little at a time. Remember do not ever shake your masking fluid bottle because it causes air bubbles. Masking fluid is a liquid latex rubber. Be sure to wait until its completely dry to paint.
If you search for "nail dotting tools" on eBay you can get these really cheaply. They are the exact same thing, only cheaper than from the art section. Just a tip.
Hi Linda - I've watched this a few times and still can't quite figure out what areas you mask first. Obviously, all the whites but then you've covered the green podheads?? Is this because you are going to pour with some reds or oranges first? I'd like to have a better understanding of what areas you mask first and why?
Terry Mellway Hi Terry, I'm sorry you are having some Trouble figuring where to begin to mask. If you have a black and white you can easily see the lightest light areas to mask out.and the any other light ares to mask. Once those areas dry, you begin masking areas to mask. Once you have this masked out you are now ready to pour the first layer. Then the next area to mask out will be your next lightest area. Then you will pour again. You keep doing this until you've covered your final dark area.your going to pour. Once you have everything poured and it has all dried, then you remove all of masking fluid. You should be able to see all of your many layers you have treated.there are times that you missed masking an area, you can just paint the area in with your paintbrush. Terry Mellway I covered the green pod because I will paint those by hand. I'm just preserving them to paint later.In pouring you always want to preserve your lightest airless first. The idea is to to work from lightest to dark value.each layer your preserve will stay that value. You're doing this to build up separate layers of values. You last pour should give you very darkest pouring.

Terry Mellway your work is fantastic Terry!!!! You're a very accomplished artist so Pouring shouldn't be too hard. It's all about value when masking. Keep that in mind. As you know in Watercolor, typically you work from light to dark. You do that in pouring as well. It takes thinking on how you want it to turn out. And with pouring, sometimes it doesn't do exactly what you "think" it will turn out. I'm excited to see your studio, how fortunate you are!! I'll be excited to see it! Are you on FB? I think I have a good in determining how I want things to look in the end but as you said it does take some thinking and planning. I'm excited to get going in my studio and trying some of these things and not worrying about the mess I might make. My studio which is called Pencil & Brush will be open to the public as well as being part of a summer and fall exhibition tour called the WAVE as we live at the lake which is very much a summer tourist destination so there is a large art community which I am now a part of. If you're ever coming to Manitoba look me up.
