I find that a tin turkey pan big enough for many paintings. My sink is smaller. Pouring watercolor is the hardest thing I've tried to learn. When it works well, it is breathtaking in its gradations. Thanks for the video.

Hi Maxine, I have been out of town and could only reply from my computer. I kept trying from my phone but for some reason it just wouldn't let me reply. So very sorry. You can still watch all video's on Pouring Watercolors, so please do, I give other necessary information early on in the other video's that will help you. On using the masking fluid on your paper. Always, always try the masking fluid on a piece of scrap paper of the same type you are using to paint on. There could be a couple of reasons this happens. First the type of paper you are using. What paper are do you use? If it is a cheap brand, this could happen. If you apply to damp or wet paper, this will also cause it to tear. If you are removing the masking from damp paper, it could also cause tearing. Therefore always apply to nothing but dry paper and always remove from absolutely dry paper. If the masking fluid is old, it could cause the tearing. This is why I always suggest trying it on a sample piece of paper first. The best paper I can recommend is either Fabriano or Arches. Although I have recently heard that since Canson (a paper manufacturer) bought out Arches, they are now making their own paper and calling it Arches, there is a chance it could happen but if you remove it slowly and carefully, you should be ok. Hi Claire, thank you for watching the video. I use a brush because spraying you could easily miss wetting an area. A dry spot means getting unwanted hard edges or blooms from the water not flowing as it should. I hope this answers your question.
Using a different type of paper really helped. Thanks! Wish I could show you my last attempt at pouring watercolor. Then maybe you could help with what I am doing wrong...I really love this way of creating interesting paintings but obviously I'm doing something wrong. So far my paintings come out almost black. I have watched your class videos many times and each time I learn something I missed before. Using a stylus has been the answer when using masking!!! Thank you for that tip. I have massive amounts of student grade paint ( bought just for smaller size half pans- only place to get them and cheaper in long run than buying empty half pans) would it be a waste of good paper? Looks like fun. But what a mess!
Marjorie Johnson I would say try them and see how they work using this technique. But for traditional painting I suggest using only professional paint. If you have access to a sink pour over the sink, if not, a trash can, plastic container, etc works to pour into. Don’t do it over carpet you don’t want to spill it on the carpet. It isn’t all that messy if you are careful. It is really lots of fun. 😊
Yes you can if you don't spread it too much or you defeat the purpose of the poured feeling. I use thin gloves to push it around and find that works really well and then you won't absorb paint into your skin. Some colors can be toxic, so gloves are the best. I just bought mine at our local medical supply store as they have latex free gloves and are really thin.
Roberta Bymers thank you so much for watching. If you want to try this, you make your drawing much more simple and then use the process explained here. As you actually do this, it becomes much more clear. Simple steps are Draw your subject, find your lightest light value, mask those areas. Let masking dry. Get Paints ready to pour. Now wet paper all over, begin pouring yellow, the red and then blue. Let dry completely. Mask next light value and repeat the previous steps until you are happy with your values. It's that easy. Just make sure you have 3 or 4 values to make the painting interesting. Enjoy!
ClassyGeek, you can do this method for just your background. But I am doing the entire painting doing this process. So many layers of masking out out layers and then many layers of pouring paints. Thank you for watching.

Yes it is taped down as it gives me a very flat surface when pouring the paint on. Thanks for watching!
