Some experimentation with watercolour. Trying out pouring from bowls of payne's grey to create this large abstract watercolour. Not sure if I will do more layers or not. Interesting first attempt. I will keep experimenting. Any ideas on how to get the watercolour to move but stay contained by a firm edge is much appreciated.

Rives BFK etching paper. Probably best to source this from your local store so you can look after the paper and not have it posted unless you are buying a large amount of paper and it will be looked after. Re constraining edges:
1. Define wet edge using a damp, not dripping wet, brush.
2. Add puddle of water well away from that defined damp edge.
3. Gently entice wet to meet damp.
Note: if damp border not wide enough, puddle will flow into and over it.
4. Pour colour into the puddle of water. It will spread out fast in puddle, slowing down when it reaches damp border.
5. If you time everything correctly, and don’t add excess water that spreads over painted boundary, your pigment will slow down as capillary action diminishes, seeping up to that defined edge but not across it.

Scott you’ve given me some great ideas here. I want to do a large scale gum tree flower or flowers doing something like this but I will put water on first to guide the shape, then pour the paint in or use a pipette to apply colors , and use a pipette of water to drag out the stamens and guide the flow

If your paper holds just the right amount of water, then the paint brush stroke is preserved as expression, and even more moisture control lets the paint spread its gradient of color for realism and intrigue. It’s half my personally developed technique. Note, measurement shows that one drop of water will cover one square inch of paper. Helps no know. Love this stuff. art is shapes and colors so you evaluate.

I've seen rubber cement with a brush used to delineate and save white areas...paint it on, then remove and Voila! Love this piece..it's alive! More please.

Beautiful experiment. You could use rubber cement as a resist. Simply rub it off after it’s dry. Also hot glue works as well.

As an almost complete amateur I was wondering if masking fluid would control the edges that concerned you. I love what you are aiming to achieve. I may try this myself as water colour is so fascinating and the aim must be not to fear it.

I too love the beautiful abstract marks that watercolor makes. I wet down the back of my paper really well so it sticks to the board, this can help with the buckling.

Paint your edge with clean water first, you can blot the excess water away. Then move the paint into the area. The dry/wet edge will stay sharp.

Hi Scott, it’s more than a year since you did this but only just discovered it! I wondered if you’d experimented with Yupo before? I’m into abstract watercolours too. You may not want to go in this direction but obviously the Yupo won’t absorb the water/pigment so will contain the fluid with a hard edge and allow diffusion of the pigment within the water boundary, if that makes sense! You get interesting textures and can layer on top too and it creates beautiful glazes. The advantage of Yupo is you can wipe any experiments off the sheet and re-use. Jill 🇬🇧

i think the way to get that hard edge is to add more water. if i look at where the "lake" was it has a very nice hard edge. where as the edge you dont like so much is where there was less water and maybe a bit of spraying?? this is definitely worth exploration! thanks scott.

How do you prepare the paper so it doesn't become wavy and starts to create little "rivers" that all the color runs into? Is there a good tip for this amount of water?
An amazing technique, Scott, with beautiful results. Incredible to watch how the paint reacts to the water creating those amazing shapes. I would find it helpful to have some preliminary info in advance such as the weight of the paper, whether it is sprayed ahead (does not appear to be) and the name of the Chinese artist who you refer to. Hi Matilde! I use rives bfk etching paper. But I am sure you could use many different papers. Arches cold pressed medium would work well and cope with the water better! 👍

Hi Scott! Have you tried Dr. Ph. Martin's Frisket Mask Liquid to resist certain areas? I like experimenting with watercolor pours and with acrylic inks on synthetic paper. I have not changed it! I am surprised too! I thought it was just an interesting experiment but it is actually a pretty cool painting in its own right.
Try making wet and dry spots on the paper , then pour colour only into de wet. To see the wet spots maybe very little colour into the water ... ?

how about wax to contain the flow?
I've never tried dripping or more so, pouring the same pigment
in different intensities upon the same paper to garner a layering
effect. A little similar though. Intriguing. I'd love to use larger
dimensions of paper but can't afford them.
I love splayed brushes...fan like. Appealing. Looking for a style
that resonates in my head. A gentle wash. Suggestions. I love
to splatter and pound the paper with a trowel or a putty knife also.
Cutting paper with an Exacto knife to create shapes that com-
plements color. Raise partially cut geometric shapes, paint them,
then raise them up in 3-D style like corn.
Smearing layers of colors to create a mosaic.
Too much water on the paper. But a pleasant separation. Hard
to gauge.
Here's some ideas...use a fine strainer or a spray bottle filled
with pigment to disperse paint. Or, a toilet brush. Whack away,
baby! HA! Colorado.
I'll like to know which watercolor paints you are using? Are they regular watercolors or fluid watercolors? I'm an abstract watercolour painter, but I haven't tried this technique with large amounts of water.

Hi Reviews Matter. Yes you can but a single sheet of this paper from many local art stores. It just costs much more if you buy single sheets vs 50 sheets at a time. Hope that helps. cheers Scott
Love your painting. You should take a look at the work of watercolorist Naomi Andree Campbell ( not the model) BTW you used a LOT of water! Less might be more when it comes to the water. Also, have you tried granulation medium? Interesting stuff
try with salt wather , paint the detail with salt warter and pensel.

I think containing pour of paint into water with a clean edge is successful relative to the amount of time the water has sat on the page. I usually paint a shape that I want on the page with water, then add liquid Hydrus Payne's grey by dropper into the water shape. There is very little ability to control the outcome. Which is what keeps me coming back for more. LOL
Also, if I get a shape I like but there is too much water in it, I use a plastic dropper to draw water back out, if that makes sense.

hi!! i’ve been studying and thinking of ways to do this… have some premix paint in bowls … have some dollops of three to four colors placed on a flat palette… gets a credit card and a spray bottle with a one line direct spray… and a roll of paper towels … perhaps try this: tape the paper to a board only taping the top…. pre-wet the top and bottom leaving a band of dry near the middle… …you can pick up dollops of dry water color on a credit card and squish it on the wet water line and try and smear it out thin… it may take two three dollop tries depending in the size of your paper … you can start to play with moving the paint around… use the straight line sprayer on the thicker dollops of paint… … if things begin to wash out dip a big thirsty brush in the bowls of paint … tilting your paper and board as you please … repeat for the bottom half … idk i would love to see you try… but its going to be a lot of water and paint everywhere lol…… thanks for sharing

ok hmm how about a simple version … because i like the bowls of paint you have… just tape it to the board like before … use your bowls of premixed paint and use a syringe of paint from the bowl to have a little more control… perhaps wet the paper randomly to see what happens … then tilt and turn… maybe use a water syringe too to add water if needed?

Hi Chris definitely think that you need to stretch your paper onto a board with tape so that you can easily move the paint yourself -and a spray bottle will be an enormous help in getting your watercolour to take a little direction from you- And although i very much like the idea of letting the watercolour paint itself, I think a little guidance is usually of benefit .. have fun

I adore Payne's Grey. I don't buy the color because I love mixing colors to get it. It's my favorite color for a night sky.

@@ScottSwinson Black, dark blue, with a little white mixed in. I was in an art program where we were encouraged to mix colors because we were given a limited palette. I already have all three colors, so it made sense to me to mix them for PG rather than buying the color separately.

The initial shape looked like a baby dragon, it just needed two wings..😁😁
Leave it as is and call it "Cat fight".
Me I apply dry paint to the paper or paint from a dispenser pen to the paper. Then I add water. Water only the remaining white paper almost. The effect is to create that color gradient I spoke of when water is controlled correctly. I like to follow up with splatter or some chalk dust to further the realism effect. Let the water and the paint paint itself, not you. Thats most of my technique. Took years.

Scott, I aam only just seeing this now and don't know if you have given up on trying out this technique. It seems to me that an awful lot of what happens here is down to where you add water after you have poured the paint. For instance, if you did as you suggested and wet the entire sheet before your poured I think you would get that 'furry' edge you are looking for without runbacks. Adding extra water that is going in random directions is cool but does not dry out the way you want it to. I spent a good deal of time working with fluid acrylics and a major part of that is being able to tilt the canvas or page in your case so it needs to be on a board so you can pick it up and have some control over the direction in which the paint flows. Perhaps having a slightly greater water to paint ratio to create greater contrast would be nice but I really love your end result here and would not add anything to it. I can't believe I have the brass neck to offer advice to Scott Swinson 🤣.

It is all about experimenting and if I had figured out exactly what I would like to do then I would not have made the video or be asking questions. It is worth trying what you suggested I agree. Have a look at the work of Mao Lizi! Chinese artist. His huge abstracts are what I was trying to emulate on a smaller scale with watercolour. He does it with oils on canvas. I really love his level of detail in the colours and I am not sure how he creates the marks that are within the paint that look like they might be like fissures? @@ScottSwinson Ah yes. I see what you are trying to emulate and actually having looked at the art of Mao Lizi, you did a very good job for a first attempt, and in watercolour!!! I would have no clue how this man achieves this effect with oils. There is an almost ethereal effect to some and in others it looks like something from the ocean like a huge jelly fish. The very large size canvasses he works with lend themselves also to the freedom he needs to allow the process to happen with some element of randomness I imagine. I can see why this caught your eye. It is really amazing art and he is a unique and wonderful artist. I foresee myself ruining paper and canvas in an effort to create something like this. Oh but how does he create those incredible 'veins'. It must have to do with an additive to the paint like Liquin or something and a speeding up or slowing down of drying time? No? You have me hooked now 😂.
7:34 Knowing very little about physics, and even less about art and watercolour, I would guess it's because the paper is already too saturated with water to absorb the waterfilled paint.

This was fascinating! I’v never done anything like this, but I’d like to try it using three intensities of Chinese ink, and maybe a dab of colour when it’s all dry. I enjoy your spirit of adventure. I’ve subscribed. Cheers!

@@ScottSwinson Hi Scott. My first experiment - on 9 x 12 paper - wasn’t wildly successful, but now I have a better idea of how the ink behaves. I’ll keep trying, and if I end up with something halfway decent, I’ll tag you.

This would make a lovely background for gestural calligraphy. When you had the big puddle I was itching to suck some it out with a pipette. It could then be reused. By the way, ink is also a great medium for this process, although it doesn’t tend to be lightfast. Some inks have amazing chromatography. Check out the work of Nick Stewart.
I liked the other videos but I could not get anything usable in this demo. It is not clear what you as an artist did and what is artistic about the result. What did you do to create aesthetic outcome and what did you do to prevent just random flow of paint. Sorry if this offends you.

@@ScottSwinson Very sportive and positive. I remember admiring Mao Lizi's abstracts. I particularly liked the wide variation of blues and particularly the streaks of white on dark blue background. In fact that's what attracted me to your specific "Blue Indigo" abstract pouring. As I said I wanted more instructions on how you manipulate the pouring and tilting to heighten the aesthetic appeal of your pouring.

Hi Julian, it was on Somerset 300gsm paper but you could probably do it on any 300gsm watercolour paper. Thanks for watching!
Awesome. Did you pre wet the paper? How did you stop it from buckling with so much water?
@@juliancasey3252 Hi Julian, I didn't wet the paper first that is why it had such hard edges and sat on top of the paper for so long. It did buckle and that is why it move the pigment in unusual ways. I think if I was doing something like that again I would pre-stretch it so it didn't buckle or like you mentioned wet the whole thing front and back and then lay it down on the board saturated. Ahhh I see. I did it with Cold Pressed Canson 300gsm and buckled too 😕. I am thinking pre stretching first and tape. Or going to a 400GSM paper.. I’ll let you knw
@@juliancasey3252 sounds good! My next experiment will be to buy a roll of watercolour paper then attach to an existing canvas (280cm x 80cm) when completely wet and paint on a large scale then seal with multiple layers of spray varnish (satin or matt). Will have to see how it goes and I get a bit sick thinking about how much watercolour it will take and it may not work at all but I really want to paint on a bigger scale but so far I don't seem to be able to paint on watercolour canvas in the same way as paper!? Any suggestions welcome!

That is gnarly, Scott! The view from the side, at about 7:30 is amazing! The water is puddled up to an impressive height, gotta be at least 3-4 mm above the paper surface near the upper right corner. Quite a lot of surface tension in that end of the puddle! I love those wiped textures you created in the upper right. They look like a close up of a flower petal. The artist you mention is this guy, right? th-cam.com/video/cxJ7twE-io0/w-d-xo.html. some of his large scale abstract also have a floral quality to them. I bet with some pre-planning, you could marry this pour approach to your well-developed abstract landscape ideas!
