I run 4.11s in my truck I use in the mountains. And my highway truck has 3.73 it is definitely nice to have different rigs love the videos man keep up the great work
Enjoy the videos keep making them . Tow with 4:10 6 speed transmission, the deal about gear ratio is what fit your needs and application for your job. Not one fits all what best for your application.
The analogy of the 400 lb guy pushing in a 100 lb guy is great! Never thought of it that way. Great way to explain it to novices. I like the videos that show lots of content not necessarily staying on topic.

Great video Sam. The keyboard critics do not pull the kind of weight nor do they run the mountains like you do. Gear ratios for flat landers are different than where you are. Great information. Hopefully people pay attention to your entire video!!
Good video Sam. Probably a great learning experience for the haters who like to talk shit about shit they really don't understand. I got a good deal last year on one that the guy had to sell because the State of California told him he couldn't register anymore. His loss, my gain, I guess. But here in Texas we haven't had any legislation like they have where you're at and I built a welding bed for it, mounted a machine and a guy is working out of it right now.
Love the content, love my 4-10 geared dually with the 5 speed trany. Never use 1st gear unless I'm towing or taking off up hill. It's an F bomb lol. 95 F350 4door with the 7.3. 250 k miles and still going strong.
Yah you never use first bc that motor is a torque monster its not fast but the world be damned if it can't pull a house off it foundation and drag it down the road
You are 100% correct Rear end ratio/ transmission ratio/ tire size and engine horsepower dictate everything whether it's a pickup or a semi. I personally like 4.10 or 3.73 for standard hauling on/off road. for highway hauling only 3.50s with the right transmission/tire size and HP. There are so many combos it ain't funny and everyone is different.
Great talk bout the gear ratios. I currently have 3:73 gear ratio in my 18 harvest edition dually and plan on switching it to 4:10. I had to make a compromise getting the harvest edition so it was 3:73 and carpet interior 😎👍 Still have my vbelt and son jack and tumbler 😎
Excellent video! You touched on everything people need to consider. Engine power band, cruising speed, and the ability to start off heavy on a hill. With the automatics. The big difference between the Aisin and the 68RFE is the 1st and 2nd gear ratios. My wife's '18 Ram 2500 Crewcab, has the 68RFE with a 3.42 ratio. My daughter and son-in-law have an'18 Ram 3500 Megacab, has the Aisin and a 3.42 ratio. Both trucks are factory rated to tow a little over 17k#. Both have the same engine with 370hp 800lb/ft torque. The difference is the payload. The wife's truck is 2500#. The kid's truck is around 4300#. We have a bumper pull trailer that grosses out at 7k#. The kids have a 5th wheel that grasses out around 13k#. Both trucks handle the load about the same. So the 1st two gears being different. Is really significant! Zeppelin has a Powerline ZF 8-speed for trucks up to around 60,000#. There is a TH-cam video showing a test drive on a flat road course. The test 3500 had 4.10 gears. But the Zeppelin engineer recommened the 3.42 ratio. When I drove OTR trucks. I preferred the Cummins. 3.73 or 3.90 axle gears. And a Super10 or 13 transmission. I drove a heavy haul truck once, that had a ISX 15L, 3.90 axle gears, and a Super18 transmission. The gross weight of the truck, trailer, and load, was 230k#. I understand that tractor did over 300k#, with no problems.
You need to adjust gears on any truck in comparison to stock tire size. I regeared my truck to 4.56 to correct change in taller tire to get mine to match 4.10 gear with stock tire size.
I had a 93 d350 with 4:10 gears and towed a inclosed trailer with my race car all over the country, so what i could only get to 75 , but the truck really liked 65. I now have a 05 d350 not sure on gears but what a animal.
Have a 2012 350 drw with 3.73 and it does great with my 15k fifth wheel. Went through the West Virginia turn pike and it could not have felt better. That’s a upgrade from my 2011 f350 srw with 3.55. The 3.55 did get better mpgs escpicially on the highway but the 3.73 does feel better with heavier loads. Now I don’t currently tow much more than 15k but with that much weight and lower I feel 3.73 is perfect, also considering I do a lot of highway towing. Was considering the f450 with 4.88s but glad I didn’t go that route for my current setup.
3.73 has worked well for me. My truck doesn't get "good" fuel mileage regardless of what I'm using it for. I figure I'm good up to 10k lb trailer or whatever I can fit into the bed. That's what I need and what I've got.
I have a 3.73 ratio with a G56 and I put taller tires on because I thought it revved too high for the freeway. I don't pull more than 10k though. I think the G56 with 3.73 is similar on the rpms as an auto truck is with 4.10s.
Sam,oldgoatkeeper here, what about the best of both worlds,a Gear Venders Over/Under drive unit,I had one in my 96 F-250 with a 7.3 turbo, and it worked great for me,love ur videos,PAUL
On my 95 gmc medium duty nv4500, 4.63, 245/70/19.5" tires. Puts it at 2150rpm 60mph in 5th gear which the old 6.5 diesel is happy with. Weight is often 23-26000 pounds combined. Swapping to 4.10 in the future, get my highway speed up (70-80mph speed limits here)
I agree. I have a 95 f350 with 3.55 gears. Great for highway, not so much for heavy 12k+ loads on take off. Been ocassionally towing 12k-17k since 1995 tho. Still putting up with it.
It’s funny that you mentioned Jeep gear ratios because it’s a toss up between Jeep guys and towing guys on who is more opinionated on the subject! Keep up the great work Sam!
The gear ratio certainly help me I’m buying a GM 350 only tow with it once in a while I’m retired just moving some farm equipment may be an hour away once in a while. I figured 373 is good for me it’s an auto 10 speed transmission thanks for the info
Very concise, I run 4.10 in my 03 f30, 6.0l it is very powerful and with a 6 gear auto it gets15 mpg empty and 9mpg with 12,000# hung on the back. I’d love to do some tuning get it to 18 empty and 12 towing but tunes are really hard on bare stock engines.
You hit the nail on the head its easier to turn the screw on 4.10 than 3.73 Gear ratio swap is a good performance upgrade if you put bigger tires on or are towing dont need as much power with slower gears so it feels like your engine had a performance upgrade 👍👍💨💨
I’ve got 410s in my 03 srw Dodge also, when I switched it to a drw axle it had a taller 373s which was a great experiment I did not get but barely 1/4 to a half mile gallon better and lost a lot more power when I hook up the camper and toys it’s a lot nicer with the 410 and the nv 5600
got 3.42 rear in my 2016 3500 with the G56, works well. 6th isnt used when towing its more of an overdrive while not towing. 5th gear does 2100rpm@65mph
@@deno177 no I did a Valair quiet organic dd and I also had a few extra parts fall off when I did it. It pulls alot stronger even with the "stock" tune on it.
@@motohobo8826 thats good i remember you saying on another video that you had everything stock still, good to hear. youll be happy to tune it also. just makes the truck that much more responsive
Like you mentioned the newer trucks with 8 or 10 speed transmissions really gives you some leeway with rear gear ratios, 1st gear is lower and having multiple overdrives and of course there is no one gear ratio that will work for everyone it definitely depends on intended use
I have a 2007 power stroke with a Cummins 6.7 swap and a 5R110. With stockish size tires the 3,55’s were great on thr highway but less than stellar pulling 10k once I lifted it and put 37’s on it, I did 4.30’s and to me, it’s a perfect blend to be able to tow 15k and still run the highway at 80.
I know that I truly don't need it, but I always try to get a truck with a 4.10 gear. I'll be looking for something next year because this little Dodge Dakota definitely won't tow much of anything. Hope you have a great week
Bad cherry gearing... You are always are very informative and a bit funny...no worries about the overly critical ...keep a truckin... Ps. Lookin foward to dat dar chipper . I got my eyes on her !
Good evening. Thanks for the channel! It has been so helpful. I have a 2003 3500 dually 5.9 4x4 6 speed. It's my weekend driver/tow rig. It has 4:10 gears, and runs 70 at about 2100-2200. Is that rpm too much for crusing the highway? It's stock other than a lift pump and has 166k miles.
I like my setup. have the 4.10s and the nv4500 and I do wish i did have a 6th gear for the highway. cause I run about 65 at 1900. but so far everything that i have hooked up to the bumper has not been a challenge. i am no super trucker but vehicles and rvs are what i normally tow
Thank you for sharing your opinion, I respect it, but that does not mean I agree with you. What I do usually works for me, just as your decisions usually work for you. BTW: sorry to hear most of Cali is locked down, stay safe.
I got 3.54 gear ratio and i never had an issue with towing and towing heavy. With a 6 speed in pennsylvania mountains. I never had an issue starting out i just use 1st gear to start instead of second. I average from anywhere 12k to 21k gross most ive ever been is 29k and truck never struggled
‘08 2500 delete with 35” tires and 3.73, 68rfe. 208k miles. Empty grocery getter I sit at 19mpg, I think I’m about 10% over-geared. Add equipment trailer and mini ex she doesn’t tow very well...a little dogish. I should prob regear to 4.10 to make up for the tires and she’ll prob feel more like a 3.73 or just acquire another truck for towing purposes. Looking at a 2002 Freightliner FL60 business class sport chassis, 300hp CAT with 6 speed Allison, might do the trick for frequent CA to MT hauls.
My 06 ram 3500 drw has 3.73 with a g56. It is a little on the hyway side for the few times a year I gross 26k. Most of my heavy loads are grossing around 21k with the big lighter loads grossing 18k. She does fine on the lighter loads, but I only tow about 1 to 2 times a month so the rest of the time she is empty. So I cane live with the 3.73 gears. My project truck is a 93 ram 3500 drw with 4.10s and a g360 I'm trying to get her where I want her before really trying any heavy towing. My only experience with this truck was driving it home towing about 6500lbs and she is governed out at 75 mph on the floor. I do thing it will handle the 15k loads fine but will be slow with the old 160hp cummins. Gears do make a big difference in how a truck tows heavy loads. Most of im not towing so the 3.73 mid gears are working for me in the 06. I do think the 4.10s will be a better gear for me in the 93 with the lower horse power, but a brownie gear box would be great in the old 93.
If you have a 6 speed with the double overdrive like aisin you cant even gear that too low. Im looking at putting 4.88 in my duramax when I do the dually conversion and its only gonna raise the rpms from 1500 to 1900 at 60mph. The rpm change gets smaller with the higher the overdrive.
I have 4:10's with 35" tires and I only tow 6-7k pounds. It is fine but sometimes I wish I had 3.73 or 3.55. I know that the tires bring me down to 3.73 I think.
My 18 is 3.43 I believe it does great once you get moving but I admit getting going up hill with 14 k or more behind you is a challenge but when I'm empty I love it cause it keeps rpms down I loved my 08 with g56 and 4.10s but empty at 80 plus was getting wound up pretty good
I just wanted to say thank you for the information, I watched the video to try and get an idea of the gear ratio my truck has, it’s been regeared it’s a 2000 f550 with a 7.3 powerstroke and a zf6 transmission it does amazing towing but top speed is 60mph at 60mph I’m pushing 2,500 rpm so I was wondering if you had any idea what gears maybe in that truck because I have no idea.
My 86 f250 6.9 turbo idi with the zf5 trans and 4.10 gear with around a 31-10.50 tire does about 14mpg at 60mph at 2,000 rpm. Never use 1st gear unless towing. Im sure i can get better mpg with 3.73's like around 16 to 18mpg or more but then I loose my low end torque when I tow and offroading. Remember these trucks got like 400+ ft lbs but ain't got s**t for hp so ill stick to the 4.10's.
i have a 17 3500 dually with 3.42s and the aisin. runs 65 at 1500 😂 85 ish at 2000. it’s a dog off the line with anything over 15k lbs. it’s only rated for 20k. it’ll have to run 1st - 2nd up some of the big hills with a load in the summer. we also have the same truck with 4.10s. it’s night and day difference. the 3.42 truck is deleted and i get 20-25 mpgs going 65-70. average mpg on fuel filter gauge calculated is 16.5. the 4.10 emissions truck gets about 14.
Good points on gear ratios. These new 10 speeds r so low in first u can get away with highway gears. If only towing 4.10 is good but u mostly run as dd 3.73 or the 3.55 will work. I have the 2020 chevy 6.6 gas only come in 3.73. Ive only limited heavy towing 15k ish. It does it but could be better, but its more 6 speed trans Chevy has nice low first gear so it takes off great, n can pull n accelerate great in first but u max out 30ish mph and then second it spaced a little to far away on to much rpm drop it just lugs slows down. This trying to tow up steep grades on 30 to 40 mph back roads. I have not done any highway or much on 55 mph roads. The dodges 68 rfe trans seem to be closer and would help. How does your single rear wheel do towing heavy on the bumper? Towing this much with this truck when get up in speed to 45 to 50 mph. It feels a little werid ass end like pushing it around. I think im tongue weight heavy n might be the cause. Before i had a 1500 so im knew to towing that kind of weight. Maybe im just paying attention to every movent just knowing that im maxed out on the truck and just noticing stuff u normally wouldnt just driving it.
Another thing I'd add to the argument is where you're driving. Ive noticed where you are theres lots of hills. You need a lower gear to get alit of weight moving on a hill. Where as say flat ground you could very possibly get away with 3.73s while still towing your 30k. Slow take off yes. But it would be better mileage and still be a very capable setup.
3.55s Sam...........swap a set of prius wheels and tires, sport setting up course, and you got power band for days 👌 lmfao! I've hauled more shit with an OBS power-chicken and 3.73s than all others combined and basically you just have to use yer head and drive to what you feel from the pickup and the load. I had a 96 powerstroke with 4.10 and it would pull like hell to 60 mph, then you wish you had a 6 speed, but that's the way she goes with the zf-5. I think my 4th gen ram has 3.73 but it never made a difference to know cuz it hauls ass except for the "torque management" dual mass factory clutch, and it pulls my camp trailer just dandy and has hauled about 70 cord of firewood without fail the past two years......so whatever the gears are they work lol
Good vid on gear ratios can you explain about the 2nd gen Dana 70 vs Dana 80 and the Dana 80 in the 2500 vs 3500 are they wider on the duallys vs the single wheels and when should you swap your 70 for a 80
I’ve got a Dodge 5500 set up just like yours. It’s got a 6.7, which has been deleted in tuned, a G 56, and 444 gears. It turns 2200 RPMs at 60. Is 2200 to 2300 to high in your opinion for cruising down the highway? That’s the fastest I feel safe running it the engine has just been built.
@@VBELTandSON ok cool! Thats good to know! I love the setup. It literally will pull anything, I’ve had 30k behind it and it doesn’t miss a beat! I’ve been watching the channel for years and it’s one of my favorites! Thanks for the reply!
I like my 4.00-4.20(talking about 2500s bc that's what I have experience with) if you've got a gas monkey 4.20 is great up to 20,000 (yes every truck is deferent) and for a diesel freak I like 4.00 same same as the gas and this ratios have good top speed good mpg all around unless you are buying a dedicated truck like he's 5500 the 4.00-4.20 any where in the rang is a great around gear ratio
Pulls over 15000 everyday. 400k miles with zero issues. Don't care about fast if it keeps lasting like it has. The fords we had couldn't make it past 150k with trans problems.
Hello, I have a 09 2500 ram 6.7 with 373 and towing up to 12000 pounds with a 27 foot enclosed trailer for around 35 hours across Canada And I just bought both the truck and trailer a month ago and still have not towed long distance with them. What’s your opinion on this setup, truck is stock.
Hey, this is John. I am looking to buy a Ram 5500 to tow equipment around the County. The heaviest We have is a Cat 309 at about 21k. Would the 4:89 axle ratio be the best for max towing with gooseneck? Thanks
Hey man I have a question, my "97" 12v dosen't have the take off power it used to back years ago when my dad had it. Now I've wanted some videos on TH-cam of what might be the problem and one showed how to cap off the turbo and shoot air into it to see if you have air leaks. So I did and I found one so I thought but then I found another one and that brings me to my question. Do you know why I'd have air leaking under the turbo at the control rod where the bracket is? It's under the turbo at the top of the bracket. Is there a way I can stop the leak without taking the turbo off? My says the turbo has a factory setting that can't be messed with so I don't want to mess things up. Sorry for such a long comment.
I have 2016 ram 3500 with 4x4 and 4.10 ratio I want to disconnect front dif and put new rear dif with 3.75 ratio Do I have to eliminate the transfer case or I can leave it on ?
As far as I know if you leave it in 2wd it should be fine if theirs a way to disconnect the front drive shaft it’s even better to minimize risk of damage from two different gear ratio.
I have 4.10's in my '03 Ram 4x4 Hemi. The thing does what I want, but it is getting built to be an off road toy. Looking to buy a Cummins 6 speed manual to tow the off road toy, but mainly as a daily. Just curious, who get what mpg with 4.10s and 3.73 or 3.42(4th gen) .
Sam, If you weren’t doing this for you and your dad’s company, would you say the market is too flooded to make a good living doing semi-local hot shifting?
Manufacturers need to send you trucks because you actually use them tfl tests are nice but towing once is not a measure of reliability towing multiple times a day per week is a better test
Gun cabinets empty sam stop buying trucks lol, i used to run 373 keep in mind i have a 19 ram 6.4 hemi, switched to 4.10's love them for towing plowing everything i throw at it idc about fuel mileage, i do miss my 24v but she was a basket case i know i know its a gasser but the 3x a month i max tow it at 16k its works great
Why can't you have your 5500 in California anymore after 2 years?? I'm not an old six 3500 dually rear wheel drive and I've been as heavy as 27 28,000 hauling for myself of course cuz you can't do that legally you understand LOL but mine's got the 59 and I got 373s in it and it worked out just right for me I'm on the highway a lot local stuff as well but I moved to tiny house it was 27 28,000 lb from Arizona all the way up into Northwest Oregon pulled like a dream but that's just me I love my Dewey I love that 5'9 and the 3.73s
3.73 works for me with horses, cows, hay, tractors and Groceries. Lol
O, wait! No your mom jokes!!! Haha
I run 4.11s in my truck I use in the mountains. And my highway truck has 3.73 it is definitely nice to have different rigs love the videos man keep up the great work
Good video buddy ! The best would be to have at least 3 trucks... 4.10 for the big job, 3.73 for medium jobs... and 3.42 for Sunday funday 🤷🏻♂️😂

Your comments are right on. Luv the vids.
The gear ratio certainly help me I’m buying a GM 350 only tow with it once in a while I’m retired just moving some farm equipment may be an hour away once in a while. I figured 373 is good for me it’s an auto 10 speed transmission thanks for the info
I bought a 2017 dually with 3 73 and pull a camper that weighs close to 13, 000 loaded. I'm satisfied with it
Very concise, I run 4.10 in my 03 f30, 6.0l it is very powerful and with a 6 gear auto it gets15 mpg empty and 9mpg with 12,000# hung on the back. I’d love to do some tuning get it to 18 empty and 12 towing but tunes are really hard on bare stock engines.
You hit the nail on the head its easier to turn the screw on 4.10 than 3.73
Gear ratio swap is a good performance upgrade if you put bigger tires on or are towing dont need as much power with slower gears so it feels like your engine had a performance upgrade 👍👍💨💨
I don’t tow a lot but I also have a 04.5 3500 srw with 3,73 and it does well with the ole featherweight goose neck cattle trailer
got 3.42 rear in my 2016 3500 with the G56, works well. 6th isnt used when towing its more of an overdrive while not towing. 5th gear does 2100rpm@65mph
I have the same in mine and I only use 5th for towing heavy, its pretty much perfect for towing.
@@motohobo8826 awesome to hear someone also has this set up. you put a southbend dual disk and delete also?
@@deno177 no I did a Valair quiet organic dd and I also had a few extra parts fall off when I did it. It pulls alot stronger even with the "stock" tune on it.
@@motohobo8826 thats good i remember you saying on another video that you had everything stock still, good to hear.
youll be happy to tune it also. just makes the truck that much more responsive
@@deno177 its alot more responsive now, before the tune it was like stepping on a sponge when you hit the gas
Like you mentioned the newer trucks with 8 or 10 speed transmissions really gives you some leeway with rear gear ratios, 1st gear is lower and having multiple overdrives and of course there is no one gear ratio that will work for everyone it definitely depends on intended use
You did a good job on describing the gearing and I know people the change out rear end gears and gears in the transmission. Manual or automatic.
I love the hustle! Definitely gonna get some merch
Lovin the content Sam, especially the towing video's! 3.73 in an '08 6.7 Cummins w/auto. Does great with my 10k 5er or 5500# boat.
I have 3.73s in my duramax for me a like a 3.88 or 3.90 would be perfect maybe 4.00 but would have to drive one
That's awesome you got a track chipper!!!
My Tundra has 4.30 rear end and I don’t tow much more than a little 1,000lb camper, so I really wish it had a 373 option!
Thank you for the advice and great video
Thanks Sam! Always appreciate your opinions and sage advice!! 8) --gary
4:88 in my 4500. Pulls a 30k lb ex on my Diamond C 30k like butter. Truck is powerful af. 2400 rpm’s at 75 mph.
What model ex do you haul?
One more question. Can you put any weight on that hydraulic ramp when you're in transit ?
Sure if you want to void your insurance ?
Great video, keep them coming 👍
Same as mine. Long trips ive ran at 2500 for hours on end. Engine will be fine. Just hurts your mileage
@@VBELTandSON ok cool! Thats good to know! I love the setup. It literally will pull anything, I’ve had 30k behind it and it doesn’t miss a beat! I’ve been watching the channel for years and it’s one of my favorites! Thanks for the reply!
Well I just learned something from this video thanks for the share
I could make a lot of cutting boards just from one of those logs. Tempting
Nice topic.
Love watching the videos!! Dodge!!
The 4.88 works really well in our 2018!
Do you walk beside it?
Pulls over 15000 everyday. 400k miles with zero issues. Don't care about fast if it keeps lasting like it has. The fords we had couldn't make it past 150k with trans problems.
Hello, I have a 09 2500 ram 6.7 with 373 and towing up to 12000 pounds with a 27 foot enclosed trailer for around 35 hours across Canada
And I just bought both the truck and trailer a month ago and still have not towed long distance with them.
What’s your opinion on this setup, truck is stock.
@V-BELT and SON what gauges do you have on your steering column and how do you like them?
Hey, this is John. I am looking to buy a Ram 5500 to tow equipment around the County. The heaviest We have is a Cat 309 at about 21k. Would the 4:89 axle ratio be the best for max towing with gooseneck? Thanks
Yeah that be idle. Be a little short geared on the highway but it wiould pull a 309 no problem
4.88s FTW
I have a 03 3500 long bed SRW HO 6 speed with 4.10s also
Hey man I have a question, my "97" 12v dosen't have the take off power it used to back years ago when my dad had it.
I have 2016 ram 3500 with 4x4 and 4.10 ratio
I want to disconnect front dif and put new rear dif with 3.75 ratio
Do I have to eliminate the transfer case or I can leave it on ?
As far as I know if you leave it in 2wd it should be fine if theirs a way to disconnect the front drive shaft it’s even better to minimize risk of damage from two different gear ratio.
Great video idea😉
I have 4.10's in my '03 Ram 4x4 Hemi. The thing does what I want, but it is getting built to be an off road toy. Looking to buy a Cummins 6 speed manual to tow the off road toy, but mainly as a daily. Just curious, who get what mpg with 4.10s and 3.73 or 3.42(4th gen) .
6 in a row, built to tow!
Sam, If you weren’t doing this for you and your dad’s company, would you say the market is too flooded to make a good living doing semi-local hot shifting?
Manufacturers need to send you trucks because you actually use them tfl tests are nice but towing once is not a measure of reliability towing multiple times a day per week is a better test
im looking to buy a 22 ram 4500 everyones telling me 4:44 haul equipment and run highway from time to time
That’s why my new 22 5500 has its a gear all around gear
How do you like the Dodge ? Do you have one of those CP4 fuel pumps that self destructs and ruins the whole fuel system ?
All of mine are cp3. Love them. And you can lift or carry 10k on the tail
@@VBELTandSON Is there any kind of failsafe on that hydraulic ramp ? I'm just concerned that if you had a leak , it could cause a bad accident.
Are 4.44 too tall for 37s??

Soon
I have 4.10s in my 2500 ram. Definitely wish it had 3.73. Fuel mileage sucks. And towing capability for what I'm towing is minimal deference .
