I started with a 2001 Ram 2500 2wd with the standard output 5.9 and 5-speed manual trans, with GearVendors overdrive. I drove for Indiana Transport, who had about 2000 owner-operators on contract. Around the yards, my recollection was about half the truck were Rams, with GM and Ford making up the rest. I didn't make enough money to make payments on a $75000 truck and trucker's insurance. My little old truck was at least paid for, and worth about $4000 when I started hot-shotting it at 293000 miles.
It’d be nice if Ram would allow regular owners to access the bodybuilder guides instead of keeping locked away for approved upfitters only. It used to be a good source of info, until they locked it away.

We have a service body and a crane on most of the trucks. My truck also has dual fuel tanks for ~66 gallons of fuel. Oh and we almost never tow with those trucks.
One thing that I think it would be good in Ram is if they offers the Cummins 4.5L too, since sometimes you doesn't need all the power that the 6.7L offers but you do still needs to be Diesel and a bit more fuel efficient.
I was thinking $75 K was a little expensive, but then I saw the plastic coin tray, next to the manual transfer case shifter, just in front of those shinny vinyl seats and poof, all of a sudden I changed my mind! Wow, what a deal!

Many of the Data Center companies will have these heavy duty trucks and only run them around the facility property and make very few long distance miles - if any.
Like you said about the number of RAMs used among hot shot drivers, I see the same in the RV world. Pull into any campground and look at the brands of the tow vehicles around you. Out of 10 you will see 1 or 2 GM trucks, 3 or 4 RAM and the rest Ford. Many times you see a fairly even split between RAM and Ford. The GMs are vastly outnumbered in what you see in average use. @@hitempguy My mileage numbers were for a class 8 truck not a 3500-5500 series truck. There is a huge negative on using a smaller truck. Most Hot Shots don't have their own authority. The company you're leased onto take a good percentage of the load. Brokers know that Hot Shot's operate smaller equipment and refuse to pay the same rate that a larger truck demands. (when you can find work) If you have your own authority, you're apt to stick around for a day or two waiting for a load, since you're paying the fuel bill. Even getting 13 mpg, a 500 mile trip and the empty return is going to cost you close to $200 in fuel.
I disagree on the lights because you need to be able to swap bulbs out if they burn out so you can keep moving. There's no quick inexpensive LED replacement if they burn out
I wouldn't have a stealership touch any of my vehicles with the exception of NHTSA recalled items. Find a commercial tire shop, talk with their alignment guy on how you operate the truck, and they'll get you driving straight down the road.
When you state basic, does it feel as if it will last? I was in a Ford basic model, and the seats, dash, and everything felt so cheap, as if I could accidentally poke a finger through something.
The fact that transporters are having to use pick up trucks and cheap hotels instead of buying big rigs with a bunk, designed to actually carry much weight says it all. People converting pick up cabs to sleepers to avoid DOT registration, safety rules, professional driver licences and proper training to drive a big machine in busy traffic is terrifying. It's like going back to the 40s... When truckers actually slept on wooden boards behind the driver seat as a bed. People shouldn't do that to themselves. Get a CDL, buy a big rig and make customers and shippers pay the price truckers deserve people. Don't use a farmer truck for long haul. Much more money and safety to gain when using actually big rigs for long haul transport.
It's strange how people cmmenting on this video expect a truck like this to cost $35,000, but yet people are and have been buying these trucks. People have the money and are comanding or validating the higher prices, but those people apparently don't comment on these videos. They're probably too busy working.
I’ll say this as someone who’s driven thousands of miles over the road in trucks similar to this. They need to make these trucks with much more comfortable seating and much better sound deadening. Those are the two things that will wear a driver out the fastest while driving. Just look at the seats in long haul semi trucks as an example. Dodge and Ram have lost all my respect since eliminating their V-8 lineup. 75k for a low option truck is a ripoff and over 100k for the limited is just stupid. It just shows what this country has become. Just look at what you can buy in other countries and their prices without all the hidden fees and destination charges.
My 2018 Ram 3500 CC has dual fuel tanks - 74 gallons total. It also weighs 11,400#. More than my loader tractor on the farm. Eats up brakes like crazy and had both hubs replaced at 60k.
Try adding a tune that focuses on maxing out engine braking. It also sounds like the trailer may not be adjusted to take on as much of the load as it should, as the truck hubs should not be getting stressed out that badly.
@@Cloud30000 I’m not pulling a trailer. 11,400# is empty weight with the spike bed. It only carries large round bales on the rear, and it never goes off farm with them. I’ll take the tune into consideration.

I'd still take an F450, if I was buying new. But for around $75k, you can buy a used Class 8 with at least 500k miles of life left. I think that 5500 Limited isn't really for commercial use. It's for pulling 20k Lbs high end (Luxe, DRV, etc...) 5th wheels. That an "I'm retired and have $2M in my retirement account" truck. $100k for the truck and they didn't share how much the bed costs?
Maybe it's because I drive a RAM with a G56, but why in the world can't you leave the gear selector alone. Once I started to notice, I couldn't unsee it. Is this why people hate the drive selector knob instead of the column drive selector? Got to use it has a hand rest? 😂
My 2018 Ram 3500 CC w/ Butler spike bed weighs in at 11,400#. I should’ve went with the 6.4. It eats up brakes like crazy and had both front hubs replaced at 60k. The Cummins is a heavy engine and I’m not convinced Ram is heavy duty enough to carry that engine while doing farm work.
@j.s.7366 you probably would have been better off getting a 4500 for the farm work, the heavier duty front end will take being bounced around while being over 11k a lot better

Brokers know that Hot Shot's operate smaller equipment and refuse to pay the same rate that a larger truck demands. (when you can find work)
If you have your own authority, you're apt to stick around for a day or two waiting for a load, since you're paying the fuel bill. Even getting 13 mpg, a 500 mile trip and the empty return is going to cost you close to $200 in fuel.
No you can’t, not new. Completely boneheaded to “compare” new prices to used prices. One would think that’s common sense but clearly not
Andre the rear camera is an option to order with truck to install on beds like CM
clearly Andre is not aware of what can be done or maybe he just likes to whine shouldn't be a reviewer cause not objective.
Nice ! I would like to have a manual transmission!! They need to bring it back!
At that price, Go get a semi!
Guessing you never ran a semi.
@@Itsa_Mea We spent $85k for a Kenworth 370 single rear axle semi, air ride, bluetooth radio and gets around 11mpg pulling truss packs up to 13' wide.
I disagree on the lights because you need to be able to swap bulbs out if they burn out so you can keep moving. There's no quick inexpensive LED replacement if they burn out
But LEDs should last the life of the truck
@@thedopplereffect00 in a ideal situation
both of those payload ratings are fantastic. prices are obscene.
Have 5500 love it
Ram REALLY needs to step up to a 10 speed (with DBL overdrive) trans!!!
I’d like to see a review on the gas 6.4 ram 5500. Not much out there about them
17:58 COLUMN SHIFT!
I’ll put both those trucks through my happy valley testing program
That seems a good welders truck
i bought one of those 5500s in 2022. Just try and find a ram dealer that will do an alignment. They wont touch their own product.
I wouldn't have a stealership touch any of my vehicles with the exception of NHTSA recalled items. Find a commercial tire shop, talk with their alignment guy on how you operate the truck, and they'll get you driving straight down the road.
Ford so much better
never get service from dealer never
@@gungadinn I took my truck to the local truck tire place. $165 later it drives so much better.
The hot shots that I see are mostly Rams, but they all seem to be low trim models. The fancy stuff is nice, but it costs money, not makes money.
So any update on the recall on the 2018 2500 6.7s? Is it BS?
First thing you have to do with the 5500 is send it to Kelderman for air ride, they ride like an iron wheeled wagon even when loaded.
When you state basic, does it feel as if it will last? I was in a Ford basic model, and the seats, dash, and everything felt so cheap, as if I could accidentally poke a finger through something.
Basic headlamps, bcs led are very expensive difficult to repair , old style are way better, I just have to upgrade the lights
Suprised the wt didn't come with a gooseneck from the factory
My ram has dual tanks close to 75 gallons of fuel
Hot shot special… and farms, those of us who have to special order all of our trucks now because they put so much stuff on them we can’t fathom why.
Just bought a 24 base model single cab rollback tow truck at $108,000
I’ll say this as someone who’s driven thousands of miles over the road in trucks similar to this.
4500 or 5500 would’ve worked out better sounds like
Try adding a tune that focuses on maxing out engine braking.
I guess this channel is deleting or editing my comments. I know it doesn’t make a difference but I am unsubscribing from this channel.
But why is tfl from Colorado in auburn Hills MI????
Why did he keep saying these r the 2024 current model???
There to make a video about the new 2025 hd?!
Yeah they better add the back up camera for 100k if it already comes on the regular bed one 😂
I've seen ford hotshot trucks in the state i live in I think it depends on what state your in but I do see also a lot of Ram Hotshot trucks too.
Iveco Daily has entered the chat
I'd still take an F450, if I was buying new. But for around $75k, you can buy a used Class 8 with at least 500k miles of life left. I think that 5500 Limited isn't really for commercial use. It's for pulling 20k Lbs high end (Luxe, DRV, etc...) 5th wheels. That an "I'm retired and have $2M in my retirement account" truck. $100k for the truck and they didn't share how much the bed costs?
Would be cool to see them use the supercharged v8 from the raptor r
Maybe it's because I drive a RAM with a G56, but why in the world can't you leave the gear selector alone. Once I started to notice, I couldn't unsee it. Is this why people hate the drive selector knob instead of the column drive selector? Got to use it has a hand rest? 😂
75k for a chassis cab is straight bonkers!
Way too expensive for what it is VS way too nice (and even more expensive) for what it’s needed for. Great episode Stellantis shills.
Heck I'm getting over 9 mpg's in a 650 Kenworth
Lol....9 mpg towing 35k😂😂😂😂😂 My 22 ho is lucky to get 9 towing 10k.
Muy bueno el video, RAM está desarrollando la nueva gama heavy duty cuando saldría al mercado
Don't some owner operators transfer the bed over from their old truck?
Is the gvwr the same as a 3500 pickup?
No
Chassis cab for me I need a farm truck with a flat bed. 6.4l for me also.
@@rennen71 probably will go that route next time. Plus they have a tighter turning radius.
Why is fuel rank all the way back there?
75,000??!!!! 😮
Should be called pricey vs outrageous.
Cab and chassis. Not chassis and cab. 😂. Keep up the great videos guys you all do a great job and I look forward to seeing your videos they are very informative.
Are you picking on Andre? 😅
Ram, Ford and everyone else calls them chassis cabs.
Did ram fly you guys out to check out chassis cab trucks that are exactly the same as they were in 2019 😂 I just have to know.
Sounds like the real work horse isn’t the trucks but Andrea.
Wish the reviewer would be alot more open minded and not be obsessed what is clearly necessary for driver to get it down the road and perform tasks needed.
75k 😂😂 that's insane! I say it takes them 30k to build them
Remember the auto workers strike? They got more money and benefits.
@@tapitXq9and they continue to put together crappy vehicles because they’re lazy to do their jobs.
“You could put a lot of miles on this puppy” while his teeth are clanging together and he sounds like he’s riding a jack hammer 😂😂😂
Who in that right mind would buy that truck for anywhere near that. I mean really it has not a single feature in it I didn't know if they still made manual four-wheel drive shifters in 2024
75k is a robbery
so this is just a commercial for Ram? I get it. Glad I know, now I can skip all of the TFL CHANNELS
Of all the dumb safety regulations that are out there I'm surprised they still allow incandescent headlights in 2024 that can randomly burn out when you need them most
Don't even have a 3in ball on a 5500?! That owner has more money than brains.
99% of normal people would definitely have to be making money with it to afford anywhere near that much .
Wow. C- hannel just like a tundra..
Getting sick and tired of tundra not making a three quarter ton!
You need 4x4 trucks that are 2wd suck even on a flat surface get stuck mine got stuck unloaded flat bed open diff dully one tire fryer well 2 tire fryer on that instead of the 4 that need to work locking rear diff i would have been fine but i was so pissed i sold it
I disagree on the headlight thing. I want cheap as possible to replace. My 23 2500's headlights are very bright. Im 37 going on 77 so im the "these new lights are too damn bright"! Guy.
It’s illegal for hot shot to sleep in a truck with out a sleeper cab
for 75k, that better have heated seats
52 gallons? Is this bullshit? Why finally give people what they've been begging for now? Government regulations. Makes sense now.
