What gear ratio do I need for a lifted truck? That is the question we are answering in todays video! We explain what Gear Ratio's are, and which one is best for you! 3.73 gears are the most agressive gears you can get from the Ford Factory. Then you have 3.55 locking differential for that person who needs acceleraton and towing capability without messing up the Fuel Economy.

My 2023 Lariat has the 5.0L with towing pkg and 3.73s. I have no intention of towing anything at all. I don't care much about mileage. But I smile every time I step on the gas pedal.
A 3.55 gear ratio means the driveshaft turns 3.55 times for every revolution of the axle, not 3.55 time of the engine.
Beat me to it.
i caught that too
My truck has a 3.55 gets a whopping 12.3mpg 🤣👍
Why cannot you give names to gear ratios? Racers that have earned it. I just want the Ken Block Gear Ratio, lol
Thanks for pointing that out, it inspires thought and makes a lot of sense!
Great to see your passion for ford trucks. I love my f150. So love to see any f150 content.
I love the performance of my 18' 5.0 f150(10 speed) with 3.55's with stock tire size (32"). If I were to put 33'' tires on I would need to regear to 3.73 to retain stock performance. If I put on 35"s on I would need to regear to 4.10 to retain the performance of my stock f150 with 3.55's. 37'' would need 4.56 gears. Of course, you can regear the axle gears for bigger wheels/tires all-day but will never regain fuel milage of stock, and you can certainly run 3.55 with 35''s just fine. But I have blown up a transmission in my older f150 doing just that towing a trailer cross country
I wish you would’ve touched more on the 3:31 since that’s what I have. I haven’t towed with it yet but love how I can get up to 21 mpg and the rpms are under 2,000 on the highway.
I have 3.31s in the 5.0 and the towing capacity is 8400 lbs max according to the manual... I have a lot of aftermarket upgrades on it (intake, headers, exhaust, wheels and tires (32ishs) Detroit locker, 4 inch spindles, upper control arms, Bilstein 5100s, super chips programmer) and it tows light stuff like it isn't even there. That said when towing the big trailer (16x8x7) home we just got it did fine empty however I'm regearing it to 3.73 because that puts my towing capacity up to 10k because that trailer is big and heavy and when it's full I don't want to take the chance with the 3.31s
331 is your basic.. made for top end... if you tow you will notice more down shifts and higher revs even with a 3.5 EcoBoost.
What speeds are you doing for that rpm at 60mph? I'm in Australia and just doing my research as I want to buy one.

Most of us raised on cars and trucks know this but were are never to old to learn. Keep the info coming.
smart man
4:30 With 10 speed auto you don't need 3.73 or 3.55 gears anymore. I have a 2016 F150 2.7 6 speed with 3.31 gears. I have towed a 7,300 lbs. trailer (96 4x4 Tahoe on a Uhaul trailer) and didn't have any problems getting on the hwy.
How is the acceleration? I’m interested in the same setup
I have the same. Love it!!
Definitely some things to consider when choosing the gear ratio, and this will certainly come down to the individual driving habits and needs of the operator. I chose the 3.73 ratio for my 2020 F150 5.0 as I knew going in I was going to be running taller tires. Running taller tires is going to impact your 'effective gear ratio', but that's a whole 'nother subject. Do I get fantastic gas mileage? Not particularly. Do I care? Nope. What I do know is I rather enjoy the acceleration off the line factor. Added the locking differential to the package too as that could very well come in handy while driving on the beach. I think the 3.55 gears are a good compromise between gas mileage and acceleration for people that aren't towing/hauling heavy loads or running taller tires. If you're using your F150 as a towing/hauling workhorse, or running taller tires, I'd have to say 3.73 is the better suited ratio.
Which gear ratio would be best for a single cab 10 speed 5.0 f150??
Looking to use it for just street use quick acceleration and speed
@@grandmastagrimm8773 3.73 is the best gear ratio out of the factory for acceleration.
@@grandmastagrimm87733.73, that's what I ordered with mine, 24 rcsb coyote, I wanted max off the line acceleration, don't care about mileage so much lol😅
@@grandmastagrimm8773 410 gears
I have a 2017 5.0 XLT with a 3.73 final drive & regularly get almost 20 mpg! I drive it like it's my baby, because it is. You won't see any brake dust on my wheels as I save my brakes along with fuel, even though the 3.73 is there whenever I might need it!
In 2018 I ordered an F-150 Platinum 4x2, 5.0, 10-speed automatic, 3.55 Locking Rear End. I was going for a max payload Platinum (1,750 lbs) for towing a 6,300 lb Airstream. Best truck I ever owned, and it has more than enough power to pull the trailer up the steepest grades and get back down safely too. My highway mileage towing averages 13 mpg.
Randall Godfrey just wondering sir why did you buy an expensive model in 2wd
@@TheBigFunOne 2wd vehicles have higher tow ratings and are more economical for towing. The over the road trucks are 2wd vehicles. I also live in Florida where there isn't much need for 4wd. I did get the locking rear axle, which I had on my previous 2wd truck, and that always worked when I encountered a slippery road and helped me pull the trailer out. 14 years without getting stuck so far. There are features that only come with the premium models that we wanted, and the wife says if she is going to ride in a truck, it has to be a nice one. Thanks for asking.
Randall Godfrey interesting. How much do you want to tow? Because a 4x4 ecoboost can tow 10k lbs easy. You never know when you might drive to minesota in the winter with that truck. 😂
MrInzombia not likely. A 4x2 EcoBoost can tow more and has a higher payload than a 4x4. I think the V8 has a higher payload rating than the EcoBoost. I was going for max payload. Also, the reliability of the V8 is higher than the EcoBoost.
@@MrInzombia haha @ 10 "easy" lolololol "EASY"
I ordered a 16 with a 5.0 and 3.73. I also have an 11 with a 5.0 and 3.55s. Absolutely love the 3.73. The power difference is dramatically more with the 3.73. I have considered having 3.73s put in the 11 but don’t want to spend 2000 dollars. I highly recommend 3.73s. I only get 1 mpg less on the hwy but I get 1 - 2 mpg more in city driving with the 3.73s. Do yourself a favor and get 3.73s especially if you tow anything!!!
Great Comment! Ford F150 - the 5.0L V8 and 3.73 gears is the only way to go!
Check out PaxPower -----> PaxPower.com and read how they can turn a regular Ford F150 4WD 5.0L V8 into a better truck than a Ford F-150 Raptor off the assembly line.
PaxPower will install a factory Raptor suspension ($7000 installed).....OR.....a better high quality Icon suspension (about $8000 - $8500 installed).....and a Whipple Supercharger as an option. The custom build Ford F-150 4WD will Ford F-150 Raptor's lunch all day long...both on paved roads and off-road.
Like all you guys videos! I have a late model 2015, 3inch lift, 5.0, 6speed and 34x12 nittos on 20x10 wheels. Gears are 3.31 and I tow a boat quite often. Seems to do way better than my old 04 ,f150 with the 5.4 and 3.55 gears.
awesome, Still love the 3.55 rare ratio, sweet spots, I am from Canada, still love the content
Great practical explanation of selecting a rear axle ratio.
Now, do an acceleration comparison video between the two trucks. That’d be good to see.
DO IT!!
I got 3.92s on my 2016 Ram Sport. Absolutely love them
You did an awesome job! Immediately after watching the video, my wife who was sitting right next to me said "I know nothing about trucks, but he made it so simple to understand" . 😂
Great video and I can understand you pretty good with your Alabama accent even if I am not a native english speaker.
Out here in Germany we just have mid-size trucks (all Diesels because of gas price and mpg) and they haven't been very popular until a few years ago (maybe because of the VW Amarok). But we always had some grey imports of fullsize trucks. But it seems like more than 80% of them are RAM's. But I like the F150 better also because of your videos. Great content your videos. Wish I could have done that when I was a car salesman (VW) years ago.
Greetings from Bremen (Beck's beer City)
I own an 09 F250 with 3.55’s. I also owned two 78”s with 4.10”s and the 4 speed manual with granny gear. Those were screaming in 4th at 60-65 mph.
Ive got an 87 with a C6 three-speed with super aggressive gears, 3k at around 65. I just ordered a 2020 5.0 with 3.73. The 10 speed 3rd overdrive puts it at 1750 @ 70mph, Pretty amazing.
Had an 01’ F150 with a 5.4 and 4.56:1 we did 15k hit 37 states pulling a 25’ 7700 pound airstream and got about ten miles / gal. but only got about the same the rest of the time, 2000 rpm @ 55 mph. In overdrive , the only time I was on the freeway was with the trailer . Worked very well and fun to drive .
Mitch, that video was extremely helpful. I'm currently buying an f150, and hopefully, I'll get that higher gear with the Roush.
Another very important variable to add into this equation would be tire diameter. If you go on 37" you wanna have a 3.71 or higher to compensate.
What about 35’s? 3.71? Or 355
2018 XLT extended cab 4x4 5.0 10 speed trans, 3.31 gears, 285/75-18 Toyo AT's (35"). 16-17 MPG empty, with 3 other almost adult family members it starts gear searching, hooked to a 6x10 utility trailer or 14' aluminum boat, motor and trailer....12 MPG and constantly gear searching. I can be traveling into a head wind empty and truck starts gear searching. Love the truck and engine, just wish it had a 6 speed transmission or Wish I had 3.73 gears or both.
Thats a decent explanation. Most people don’t even consider gears when buying.
Thanks for this. Higher number- higher tow, lower number- better mpg
I been looking on trucks, right now i have a small kia forte. and where i live when it rains man the flooding is bad. several coworkers had lost there cars. so that is the resosn in looking for a truck, and I see those options of gear ration without understanding @#$@#$. so yes. Perfect explanation, now i do understand this, thank you so much.
Definitely helpful for the people who don’t know anything about it! Thanks!
I have a Ram 1500 with the 3.92 axle ratio and absolutely love the feel off the line and whenever I want to pass people. I don’t tow at all or carry anything heavy often but that off the line feel is awesome. Yeah mileage is pretty bad compared to my buddy’s with a different axle ratio but it’s a truck so I don’t care plus it will be better for me once I lift it to help with drivability.
What are the differences in Highway speed? I got 3.55 in my 04 1500 so 95 is easy to get to, when you went to 3.92 what’s your top speed comfortably?
@@cliftonsargent1572 honestly it was comfortable at the speed governed limit of 105-107 as long as it wasn’t to windy out at that point it was just aerodynamics coming into play making it feel floaty. Power was never an issue and it was still pulling up until it hit the limiter that I didn’t have removed because my tires weren’t rated for a higher speed than what I could go.
@@THEDESTROYER711 ok so you were able to cruise at 65-70 and not be at or over 3k RPM?? That’s the only reason I haven’t purchased a back Axel with the 3.92 gears in it
@@cliftonsargent1572 with the 8 speed transmission at 80-85mph I believe it’s about 2000-2200. The last couple gears in that transmission are cruising gears so it drops the rpms pretty low for that speed.
@@cliftonsargent1572 if you have the older 4 or 5 speed tho I don’t know how it would really effect that tho. I wouldn’t imagine anything more than 500 rpm higher. I’m sure there is some sort of calculator for that.
Shoot, with the 10 speed transmission and all those extra overdrive gears 3.73 is the way to go!
On the same note, with the 10 sp, you don't notice any more aggressive acceleration between the 3.31 and 3.73. This is especially evident with the mustang gt that has a 3.15 rear.
@@MormonMustang_ Idk, I drove a 5.0 3.73 and 5.0 3.31 this year and the 3.73 kicked hard, the 3.31 felt very sluggish. I've heard some making your claim, but from my own tests, there is a huge difference.
@@sleep_sounds fair enough man
. First hand tests beats hearsay.
Sound Sleep their zero to 60 is a fraction of a second difference between 3:31 vs 3:73. When you say “ kicked hard” you are almost just making that up in your own mind and thinking you feel a noticeable difference. But a timer will tell you its less than a 10th of a second if that faster. Drive an ecoboost and youll see a real difference from the 5.0. The ecoboost is almost a full second faster than the v8.
@@MrInzombia still a difference
Don’t worry about the accent! I’m born and raised in Florida. I was stationed in both South and North Carolina. I kind of know the difference. Great videos with stellar information. Plus, I’m a Ford guy anyway. Looking for my retirement truck!
I honestly never knew what the difference was in ratios. Now I do! Lol this was helpful in knowing what's up. Thanks man!
Can you feel the difference in speed between 3.73 and the 3.31?
Yes..I went from 3:55s to 3:90s..definitely can feel the difference.
Great video. Everything you explained makes sence. Thanks

My 13 screw with 3.73 has been really good at pulling. 👍🏽
I also have an '13 with the 3.73 and the EcoBoost. Very good for towing and quick. And you only lose 1 to 2 mpg from the 3.55.
But around town driving you will get better mileage with 3.73. And that’s where most driving is done, be honest with yourself!!!
My brother had a F-150 with the 3.31 and when he put 34 inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers on it and it killed his mpg by 4 in the city and 3 on the highway. I had the same tires on my Toyota Tundra with a 4.30 rear end and saw no reduction in my mpg. He ended up trading it in for a 3.73 last year and only lost 2 mpg city and 1.5-2 highway. He was much happier.
Bought 2022 F150 with a 2.7 EcoBoost and 355 gear ratio. Just returned from a fishing trip over the top of a 10,000' mountain,
26.9 mpg round trip.
Totally loving this truck!!!!
Stock tires?
RACING! That's what I'm gonna be doing with my truck! Oh, and going to work...ugh...yeah...that, too.
If you live in the Rocky Mountains you go as low as possible or regret it, the high altitude and steep hills make everything feel under powered
Tom Fairbourn that’s where the eco boosts shine! Watch tfl towing Ike gauntlet videos eco boosts were the only engines that still had throttle left! Amazing engines
Andrew Medeiros the turbos help but they still suffer my own experience
@MANSQUITO 3.55 I wish it had the 3.73, one day I may change them to 4.10
I appreciate this, when my friends talked about the rear ends in their trucks all I knew was my F150 had a 3:55, had no ideal what that really meant, had a 72 302 3 speed in the floor Mustang with a 3:08 rear end and it was dog slow, but it was Carolina blue with Creggars and such a pretty car.
2017 F350 6.2L gas with camper package and a 4066Lb payload and 3:73 gears. Why didn't anyone mention the 4:30 option when I was looking? Towing a 6300 Lb trailer and does fine everywhere except for the longer hills in PA with 6% + grades. Had to back down from 50 mph to 38 mph because the tach was hanging out at 5500.
I think the 4:30 gears are a great option if you don't drive high mileage when not towing. I drive short distances in town, then tow 50-100+ miles 5-10 times per year. Diesel would be overkill. A 150 could even do it, but I don' t like the downhills with move than 5500 in the 150's.
Good video and info. My 2015 eco boost fx4 has 3.55 gears which pulls my 6x12 utility work trailer like nothing even when fully loaded.
Already with just 3.55 gears, my tired will peal with very little gas. The rear ends are light
Which engine sir?
@@AdSando12 3.5
With 35 inch tires on a 3.5eco, will a 3.73 act more like a 3.55? My understanding is the larger the tire the larger number gear ratio you want to counter balance that...
You are right. The larger the tire, the more your ratio will decrease in number (from 3.73 toward 3.55). The actual final ratio would require some math. So if you want to put in large tires, a higher gear number (like 3.73) will help you keep acceleration more similar to a 3.55. If you put large tires in a 3.55, your final ratio will go towards the 3.21. Putting on larger tires will lose you acceleration in general.
Thank You for a great explanation. T&C channel adds great content in a perfect length of time. Your delivery of information on ford products matches that perfect blend of clear narrative with friendly, no nonsense facts.

Love my 2019 F150. I get 21mpg average highway and city with Ecoboost 6 and 3.55 gears.

This Monday am gone pick up my 21 f150 xlt 3.73 gear 36 gallons tank 360 camera co pilot assist led noght light
I've noticed a decrease in my truck's MPG after regearing. Previously, with the stock 3.55 gears and 38s tires, I was achieving 13-14 MPG. However, after installing the 4.88 gears, my mileage has dropped to 10-11 MPG. I had expected the regearing to improve my fuel efficiency, so I'm surprised and disappointed by this outcome. Only good thing is that now i am shifting better and using all 10 gears of my transmission
Love the 3.73 and the 10 speed 😳
Me too, 65mph@1500 rpm in 10th.
@@christianjensen3182 THANK You!! I was wondering what the freeway RPM was for 3.73 and 10-speed transmission
Really great video. I don't know how many times I have come back to watch it. I get the physics behind gears and ratios, but applying the concept to a real-world application (like my truck differential) ... uh... _system not responding_. At first, I was That Guy your were talking about at the end of your vid, "...confused the crap outta ya..."
BUT as I started to explore more, really "think" it though, and watch this video a hundred times - YEAH! I really appreciate your straight talk and examples of when/why you would want a different set up. Especially talking about your own truck!
I have a 2018 F-150 V-8, 10-speed. Going to lift it soon. I am also thinking about eventually installing manual lockers - doing that research is when the lightbulb started coming on. I was bothered by all of the information floating around about the bigger/heavier wheels bogging down the truck, wrecking performance, the 3.31's would make it suck, blah, blah, blah. This video was VERY HELPFUL!
I think I could apply your information to the off-road performance aspect, but I would love to see a similar video that talks about gear ratios on lifted trucks with 35's in off-road settings (not from a heavy towing or acceleration/racing perspective). What would be the best ratios for a work truck/overland truck that might also be a daily driver or frequent freeway commuter? (A pink, flying unicorn, I know...)
Love the channel!
Quick answer: 3.73 (or whatever the highest number becomes) is the only option you should ever even consider, higher acceleration and more pulling vs fuel economy.... who buys a truck for fuel economy? Also, it blows my mind how many people already own F150s and don't know this in the comments.... who the hell buys an expensive vehicle without studying every stat it has? I didn't know anything about gear ratios before I started truck shopping. it amazes me how many people don't know the stats of their vehicles after spending all that money.
most ppl dont know their capitol or who the president is.....
@@RocksNRuts4 I agree, but they didn't pay $65,000 to buy their president or state capitol.
2014 5.0 3.73s i get 15mpg with 35x12.5 tires and a lift. Towing 6000lbs seems good for get up an go. Interstate non towing its around 2200 rpms.
Is your truck leveled or lifted? And how does it tow?
basically, this is like gear on a bicycle, thanks for info!
I went from a 2012 3.5 Eco with the 3.73 rear end to a 2019 3.5 Eco with a 3.55 rear end and 10 speed. I have to say that I miss the 3.73 rear end but on the plus side I averaged 16.9 MPG towing my 2500lb boat/motor/trailer on a 2000 mile fishing trip. Not bad for a gas truck.
So numerically, how much more torque and efficiency difference are we talking about on the 3.73? If I jump on it in a 3.55 and a 3.73 that are otherwise identical, will I really feel the difference?
If you drive them everyday, you can feel the difference when you step all the way on it. It’s not as big of a difference as most people make it out to be.
Great educational video for those city truck drivers. 3.31 for long distance and freeway driver. 3.55 for freeway driver / weekend towers. 3.73 for towing toys and weekday workers always pulling a trailer. Lower the number better on mpg, higher the number better pulling power with bad mpg. Pick your poison.
"I like to drive it like I stole it." Absolutely love that line.
Work=ForceXDistance
So when you lose one distance (the engine spins more) you gain in force (more power to the ground)
Nice video.
You don’t get more power to the ground, you get more torque to the ground via mechanical advantage
You where offon the description of what gearing does. 3.73 for example is a reduction after the transmission so you get one revolution of the tire per 3.73 turns ofthe transmission output shaft.
The 10 speed makes 3.73 almost as long geared as the 6 speed and 3.31 on the highway and 3.31almost as low as 3.73 in first.
I tow heavy with my 19 f150 I ended up with an HDPP 5.0 it tows my 11 to 12k travel trailer very well. Better than my diesel excursion.
Can you talk about the 3:31 and 3:15 gear ratio for those who don't tow a lot. And want to get "BETTER" gas mileage in and highway. And why aren't these ratios more readily available.
This video was very helpful
2013 with 3.73 180k miles. Engine and transmission is solid.
My father-in-law’s F150 had a 302EFI with AOD and the 3.73LS. He towed a 42’ Holiday Rambler without breaking a sweat! That 302 had half the horsepower they do now!
I'd like you do a really good show and tell on the Mach-E when you get one in. I pre-ordered one for my wife and have been reading all the reviews. I'm super excited about it. I like the detail you put in your videos. If I lived closer, I would totally buy a vehicle from you.
So, how come ford F550s with 4:10 or 4:30 gear ratios are the slowest trucks I've ever driven?
I have 2 F 150's super crew cab XLT's, both with the 5.0. One is 2011 and the other is a 2016 both with 3.73 gears Love that gear ratio
Last week I bought a brand new 2020 xlt sport with the 2.7 eco and 3:73 gears. She likes to scoot!! Plus I’ll be towing my 5800lb trailer with it sometimes which helps. Love this truck so far.
What kind of fuel mileage have you been getting with the 3.73 gear ratio ? I am of the opinion that a person wouldn't really know the difference. Truck shopping and the 3.55 seem to be the most common.
@@jetboy770371 I’m getting around 22.5 mpg with it. Also with the different gear it upped my tow rating a little also which was nice.
I realize this is a year old, but IMO, there isn’t a noticeable fuel economy difference between a 3.55 and a 3.73 with a 10 speed. In a vacuum maybe there is but the frontal area of going 75 mph and pushing against the wind drag is where your fuel usage come from, not the 40 rpm difference between the 3.55 and 3.73
Correct, MPG will be within a few tenths.
3.73 may invite one to apply more throttle since it’ll feel “ballsier”
This was perfect I want to get a single cab and I wanted for racing, know I know what will work for me . Good video!!
Great information i have a 2018 F150 STX Sport with towing package good truck water pump went out 11 months after i bought it but so far so good

Do you have future plans to do a video on engine comparisons?
Thank you for getting me learnt! These videos have been very helpful guiding me in my purchase of an f150.
Very good job of explaining!!
Great video. You made it easy to understand. It’s not easy making informational videos.
Thanks for your video. Soon I will be shopping for a new F150. I will be pulling a 7000 lbs trailer most of the time. I think the 3.55 combined with either the v8 or v6 turbo should be OK, thanks for a 10 speeds transmission. Still didn't make my mind about the engine.
The 3.5 Ecoboost with the 3.55 Tows like a Beast.
You really only talked about the importance of swapping the gears as it relates to towing. But another and probably more important piece of it is that when you go up in tire size, and don’t change the gears, it wears out your transmission, axle bearings and pinion. I put 37’s on my 1997 F150 4x4 and it wore the transmission out in about 10,000 miles. The transmission guy told me the whole transmission was shot, they had to do a complete rebuild on the transmission, right after the transmission all the axle bearings an the pinion went out. I ended up putting 4.88’s on it and it’s like a different truck, it hauls a$$ even with the big tires and gets almost twice the mpg than the stock gears. 33’s and maybe 35’s are probably ok to run with stock gear ratio, but any bigger and you have to change the gears.
Great job. Not confusing at all.
I have a 2018 STX 2.7 eco, I have the 3.55 gear ratio and it has a 7” lift with 325/60r20. I can tell you 3.55 makes it feel sluggish. Maybe if you have a 3.5L ecoboost it may be a different story. I’m swapping my gears next week to either 4.10 , 4.30, or 4.56. I did get a Tune which helped a bit but I feel swapping gears to match the bigger tire size will be much of an improvement. We will see once I get them installed with the verdict.
Did you do this? What did you end up going with and are you happy.
The difference in the various ratios is so little that a 10 speed transmission can very effectively compensate for how they affect the performance of the truck. If you want to know the real difference between these axles look up the torque and weight ratings of each axle.
I liked the video, but researching this topic I have to say there is a lot of conflicting opinions regarding how much stress it puts on the drive train when using bigger tires etc
Great explanation. Just made my decision on which truck.
I've got the 10 speed with the 3.73 diff and the 2.7L. I still get great mileage on the highway. The 10 speed is clearly programmed to get max fuel economy when you're driving moderately with a light load in normal and eco modes. It will skip gears to go directly to the higher ones once you're moving and doesn't downshift unless necessary. Of course if you put it in sport mode, different story altogether.
What do you get on the highway for fuel mileage? I’m mean, I’d rather the 3.73 for the extra towing but the trailer I have is about 6500 lbs so 3.55 works too. Just those multiply times a year is it worth it for the little less fuel mileage the 80% of the driving of the truck
This is the best combo
I like the truck color and set upon the one in the back looks like an army truck that must be a raptor or tremor
So is the 4.30 pretty close to the 3.73 gear. And which is better for towing?
Very helpful. I'm looking at a off road roush f150 and I forgot to even look at the gear. Now I'm going to want 3.73 gears in it since I have a heavy foot lol
A lot of the newer Roush F-150’s are now coming with 3.73’s. The earlier Roush F-150’s had 3.55’s
I think if you want to do 1/4 mile 4.10 ‘s are your best bet!👍
Man, i am not sure if you are a sales person at the dealership that you are standing in front of in this video, but i will tell you that if you are, you are an asset to that dealership. Most sales people are completely unfamiliar with this information. Gear ratios are a big deal when towing. Also, most customers come in to buy a truck with the incorrect idea of how much payload a truck has. You can have 2 f150's side by side, with 2 very different payload capacities. I bet you are familiar with that as well, and dent mislead your customers.
I don't intend to lift but can't rule out towing. I would have been tempted to go 3:55 with the six speed but now that the ten speed is here was thinking of staying with the 3:31.
Any thoughts on this?
Thank you for this video! So many people have no idea how important gear ratios are and hopefully this will shed light on the topic to many people.
Mitchell , helpful but I assume most dont know just want what go fast and like you do not care about mileage. I have xl xlt 4 doors for work trucks and personal. We run 373's and 355 as we can purchase them. As we keep very close tabs on mileage all 5.0 18's and 19's the difference in mpg is only .5 mpg (avg) between rear ends. Mpg varies between 22 and mid 17's across multi use/payload. Thanks for the content we watch your vids in the shop an usually create good discussion.
this was a great vid! but now I need help to figure out if I need electronic locking or non-limited slip.
I have 3.73 front/rear gears and a Yukon LSD sitting in the box for my 2015 5.0 with the VMP Odin blower on it.
Even with all of the parts required, I've got some crazy quotes for the regear. :(
Good content. Truck owners who don't understand 3rd member ratios are just dummy wannabes. My '18 2.7L w/a 3.55 can do anything I'm intending and get great mpg doing it. If I place it in sport mode, it'll upset most all non understanding wannabes.
Now, when can I come get my goodies? LOL,,,I just subscribed and look forward to more content for F-150s. Keep up the good work and God bless y'all.
2019 f150 4wd running 37s with the stock 3.31 on my 3.5 with my 7" readylift. My power wheelchair is the only thing it carries lol. But i am looking into a travel trailer so might regear it.
4:56 for 35-36's and 4:88 for 37-38.5's is where you want to be.
What color is that F150 with the 3.55? Is that Lead Foot?
F150 5.0 3.31 or 3.73 for daily driving?
Really wishes I knew more about this subject before buying my f150. Thinking I should do got the 373 gears
I have had 3 3.5 Ecoboosts. 2012 with 3.73 and 6 speed. 2015 with 3.55 and 6 speed. Now a 2018 with 3.55 and 10 speed. I wanted 3.73 on the 2018 but can’t get those unless you have the payload package which you can’t get with a lot of the options I wanted on my current truck. The 2018 pulls the same and even better than the 2012 did but also has more torque. The 2015 was by far the worst pulling of the three.
