How to Remove Carpet and Install Vinyl Flooring | Duralux Luxury Vinyl Plank LVP over Concrete

  • In this video, I show you the first to last steps of how I remove my friend's old carpet and replace it with 100% waterproof vinyl luxury planks. After taking out the carpet and pad, I remove the tack strips and most of the baseboards. A huge undertaking of this project was to see if the room was square because they are going to redo the flooring in their hallway. If I skipped this step, it would make the flooring at their front door crooked and out of square.
After measuring how the floor was going to need to be laid out, I put down the underlayment/ moisture barrier over the concrete. For flooring, they chose a DuraLux LVP flooring, purchased from Floor and Decor. This flooring did not necessarily need the underlayment, however, I installed it because the flooring was going over a concrete subfloor, it was also able to give them extra padding and comfort. They also decided on new baseboard around the room minus the closet. I ripped out the old baseboard and made sure that the one that we got, was a 1/4" taller than the old baseboard so it would cover the paint line. With the door trim, I used my favorite multi-tool and cut the bottom off so that the new LVP could slide underneath. After I laid down the entire field of flooring, I then cut my baseboard and installed it. I didn't attach it to the flooring because LVP needs to be able to expand and contract. For the closet, I kept the old baseboard and decided to put down a piece of 1/4 round to cover the gap between the floor and the baseboard.
Laying down LVP is a very friendly and DIY project but each flooring company has a lot of(and different) warranty stipulations. Make sure to read the directions and ask a friend if you need the help! I hope this video helps and thanks for watching!

Hey! For the hallway flooring, they actually had a flood so if you look closely you can see that it’s all buckled and wrecked.

Great job, thanks for explaining to those that don't know to take full measurements before starting your first row. my only critique (because you asked) is to wear a dust mask. many years of pulling up old carpet has taught me not to breathe in the dust from the broken-down carpet backing. It's latex in your case but often older carpet is jute. both hard on the lungs. love your work, and I don't miss pulling up floors... :)

Lol! Im watching this right after we just pulled up our LVP flooring and installed carpet into our living room. We just missed the cozy feeling carpet gives you as opposed to a cold plank floor. We are much happier now. As a bonus our surround sound sounds much better while watching movies now. 😊

Nice video. Watched the entire thing.
I'm about to tackle 1100 sq ft of LVP in my home, replacing a bunch of gross carpet. Although I've DIY'ed both LVP and cork flooring in the past, I still watched a ton of videos to see if there's better ways to do things. Some things I've learned and will try this time around:
    - Using a spade shovel to remove all the tack strips. No need to crawl around on your knees.
    - Putting tack strips on top of the padding and carpeting before rolling it up to keep from getting poked.
    - If you have carpet staples, a floor scraper makes quick work of removing them.
    - Measure out the room, find out ahead of time if you're going to end with a really short board. If so, adjust the width of the first row.
    - Put in the first row last. Screw in (or hot glue for concrete) scrap pieces of LVP into the floor at the joints of the second row to keep things from shifting around.
    - Use a cheater board to scribe all your cuts. Drastically reduces the amount of measuring needed and reduces the chance of errors. See YT channel "So That's How You Do That" for a ton of very informative videos on LVP installation from a professional installer.
    - Try to have a butt joint in your thresholds between rooms.
    - To avoid using quarter round, you can cut away the drywall the same way you cut away trim pieces in doorways and have your expansion gap hidden.
    - Check for unlevel floors and address before installation.
    - Use a scrap piece of LVP instead of those cheap tapping blocks from the big box store. This protects the TNG from damage.

After seeing many types of flooring, some awesome, some regrettable, my wife and I landed firmly in the camp of "hardwood or tile," even though we've seen some great examples of vinyl. What people seem to regret the most is bamboo flooring since it scratches up so easily.

I had installed this brand and exact type of flooring here in central Florida about 2 years ago, and ripped it up in a year due to bad wear through. mainly in my office where the chair was rolling around. I had a chair matt down and still underneath the floor crushed to almost half its thickness, and the tongue and groove would break randomly and 1\4 inch stips of floor would come up. seams also kept opening up over time. hopefully you have better luck.

Here’s a tip it’s easy next time just pop the covers off the baseboard heating that way you can see what you are doing better.

From seeing how easy it would be for a slightly less-fastidious installer to install a chipped-corner plank, I'm now more convinced I must do my own...at 71 + inexperienced 5', 110 lb., female. Hmmm. With bad knees, back, + rotator cuff. Oi vay.

have you tried using mitre mate on external mitres instead of wood glue? i have been using super glue and activator (mitre mate) for a while now when fitting skirting/base boards because it dries fast you can glue them all up and pin them together before fitting the boards to the wall which i find easier and i find it's less mess than normal wood
