      It's really terrible to hear the elderly being fooled by this. But completely understandable. I don't really discriminate between ages/genders/etc but I understand they're a particularly vulnerable target. If I ever heard an Australian scamming an Indian, I'd do exactly the same to them. It's the scamming I'm against, not who's doing it or on the receiving end.

      A friend of mine got sucked in by these bastards due to a very unfortunate coincidence of events at the time. When he told the scammers that he wouldn't be giving them any money, they trashed his PC into unusability. Ever since, I've been exacting revenge for my friend by scambaiting these bastards with a VM if they call me, but seeing money refunded back out of the scammers' bank account takes vicarious satisfaction to a whole new level.

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If only it worked. I heard back from one of them and he said "Hi,Ive received no refund as of yet." (direct quote, spelling and all). It was not easy replying to him, but now he knows what has happened, as they all do, and can now take steps. I have put annotations in the video and altered the description section to reflect this, but I will not be making a follow-up video about this one; I do not want to milk this just because it got a lot of attention. Regular scambaiting is what people come here for, and that's what I'll deliver.

      This seemed to be only a tiny operation. Probably about 5 people in a bedroom. The big ones have heaps of background chatter. Plus the payment count on any given day were mostly very low

    • @frankbuss
      @frankbuss 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      First I thought this might be a hacked merchant account, because of the different sums, but if you divide it by the count for the number of transactions, it's always in the region of $200-$300, so probably you are right, all income from the scam. But I guess it is a big call-center and they are using all the same account. And I guess the people on the phone line don't get paid much. Might be a good idea to contact the Indian police and the website which provides the merchant account, with a link to this video.
      These scammers seem to be really stupid, knowing nothing about computers and then even accessing their accounts on the victims computers. But this is expected; if they were smarter they would do something legal.
      Might be fun to prepare a computer which contradicts the script of the scammers, like all Windows services started, cleaning up the error log (I saw this in another video, they were just opening the Windows event log, explaining all the "errors" are caused by a virus, but this mess is normal in Windows). In one video the scammer was starting the "tree" command from a DOS prompt, explaining he examines all the files that were listed. Would be fun to show an actual ASCII tree when the command is started. I know, I have no life watching all these videos :-)

      The thing is, whether or not something is considered a good deed from most of the society or not, under the law we all (should) be the same.
      Refunding the scam, well, whatever. Entering another computer by force is actually illegal.
      If people actually report that, that a scammer scammed a scammer, is on a totally different page. Personally, I would not.

    this is the serious side of scambaiting, we may have fun, but this is what we can do/need to do to stop this immoral crime, If i was able i would do the serious side, but my talents rely on talking and stalling.. also a useful thing to do. but those that go deeper they earn my respect, the IP trackers, the baited links all are over my pay grade but.. people who can do it so good on you my friend..

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      We can't really stop them, and stalling/messing with them is about the best that can be done anyway. I just got lucky enough with this guy logging in from my machine, and he did try to wrestle the keylogger from me, and the connection itself. I had to disconnect the virtual network connection be sure. It was too valuable by that stage to be playing.

    • @Greenwood4727
      @Greenwood4727 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the only way is awareness as i said this is the serious side, i just put a keylogger on my scambaiting laptop.. this keylogs my vm, just a little something else i really want to get the.. its not a good laptop not the best, but its a learning laptop.. now i can do it on better machines. we need all the tools we can get to get them.. If the law cant do anything.. we have to its about whats right.. (as you said this is teh serious side so i got serious)

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It is, and that's why I decided not to put any filler music in there. Over half a million USD on that account alone, in a relatively short span of time. This is why I won't teach what I do to dumb kids who don't know shit about what they're doing, who think this is all fun and games. Sorry for the attitude, but I know you understand my stance with this anyway. I like to have fun with them, but this shouldn't be a _trend_.

    • @Greenwood4727
      @Greenwood4727 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      i totally understand, occasionally we need to show the serious side, its easy to see the fun videos but you lose that we are fighting a war against these criminals. They may not realise our moral cause, we are protecting others, and yes it can be funny getting them, but there is a deeper meaning deeper cause. I grew up without computers so its a harder time for me, only came to computers later on. SO occasionally we need to show the real reasons, the old and vulnerable people scammed out of thousands, It is good to show these sometimes, but as you said it shouldnt be a trend.. (and people think scambaiting is easy its tiring but the feeling of success is worth it)

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The serious side sort of presented itself to me (I'm more a reactive person, let these things happen naturally). I prefer to have fun, yes, but an opportunity like this was too good to turn down when I saw it. I started messing around when I was about 5, but computers were quite rare in households back then. Making something like this trendy is ...a bit of a mockery to the thing itself. People should do this because they want to, not because it's 'in' at the moment.

    Class act!! Bravo! Hope the refunds worked!!! There is nothing I love more than hearing you ask questions you know these scammers can't answer and hearing them squirm as they try to come up with an explanation that in the end just makes them sound even dumber than they did a minute before. The part with the MAC address and his "oh you want to buy the mac computer ya the mac computer ip addresses are very secure" was classic! Please keep up your awesome work! These scammers absolutely deserve everything you dish out to them and more. You're amazing!

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love to do that too, in fact I usually don't ask anywhere near enough questions of them. Lately I've been a bit wary of it, since they don't like talking to anyone who seems to know something. But if they bring it up, different story. Yeah that part about the MAC address was a pure cringefest. The question about how many bits in an IPv4 address....pretty much anyone working professionally in networking really should just know as though I'm asking "how many wheels do cars usually have?", it's not even asked in job interviews. Occasionally I'll meet a scammer who knows a bit, but that's rare also. And thanks for saying that!

    You, sir, have won the Internet. I cannot thank you enough for doing this. It's about time the scammers get kicked in the wallet, these guys were making some bank. I still can't believe the scammer was stupid enough to log into their merchant portal on your end. SMART move on the keylogger.
    I run a (legitimate) IT support company and computer repair shop in the Nashville, TN area and we get complaints about calls from fake tech support companies like this on a daily basis, and unfortunately the "older" population are the biggest victims. It's sad really, and brings a certain degree of mistrust in the IT industry from the customer side of things. Maybe we can all somehow band together and put a stop to this.

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really is unfortunate that it's primarily the elderly who fall victim to this sort of thing. In a way, it's no wonder many are borderline paranoid about these devices.

      Wasting their time is still a great thing to do, they purely hate it, and it ties up human resources (yeah I know, I use the term loosely) that could be used to scam real victims.

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I just now tried to log into the 'Varun' account. They've changed the login details, so they know full well what's happened. I'm sure there's some serious grief, at the very least extreme embarrassment and 'shame' (yeah, I use that word loosely), at the most...who knows. I can only imagine what happens to a subordinate who allows a 'victim' to play them, then 'hack' the account. I'm just glad I was able to do what I could at the time, before they could stop it. Hell even after the login timed out due to inactivity (I was emailing the victims) I used the password and got back in. So I don't think he noticed right away (although he did try to mess up my input, with the Russian keyboard).

      @willpugh-calotte2199 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for getting back, Nick. I hope you managed to get some sleep last night. If I'd just pulled off a coup like that, I'd be just about bursting and too adrenalined up to go to bed.
      It doesn't look as if the scammer digested the timeout popup message from the keylogger at 34:43, but what a stroke of luck that it didn't show up before he logged into their bank account, anyway.
      For a while I've had a nagging feeling that your voice reminded me of someone, and it occurred to me last night whom: one of the lads from "The Chaser" (the ABC TV series). Given their routine of pranking and exposing security lapses and the like, and even just given the name of the series, I thought the association was rather fitting. :-)

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I slept, but it took a while (I'm just an insomniac anyway). I was also lucky about the timeout on the keylogger, and I should have been paying more attention; I know it times out after 40 minutes - and he came close to shutting it down. I might invest in a good one. The only reason I haven't, is because of how rare this is. But I've bought a proper mic, a VPN service, and I'm looking into a SIP trunk...a little more on a keylogger wouldn't hurt. I've never seen that series, but I have heard of it and shall look into it :-)

    • @willpugh-calotte2199
      @willpugh-calotte2199 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You've never seen "The Chaser"? They became particularly notorious for a stunt that they pulled during the APEC summit in Sydney in 2007. Taking a limousine and decking it with some Canadian flags to impersonate a Canadian diplomatic vehicle, and with an Osama Bin Laden-lookalike character sitting inside the "diplomatic" vehicle, they tested how close they could get to the venue where Pres. George Bush and other summit participants would be present. Waved through all the way by complacent security personnel who didn't check their credentials too hard, the Chaser team got right to the exclusion zone around the venue before deciding that they'd gotten further than they ever expected and that they'd made their point. Much police and security embarrassment followed the broadcasting of the stunt.
      Just search for *chaser apec* on TH-cam. Sorry - that's all off-topic, but I thought I should put that previous comment of mine into some context for you.

    I have a lot of respect for you and what your doing, exposing and educating users about scammers, and even making efforts to refund the money they have lost. I was honestly shocked when I saw the amount of money scammed in such a short period, over half a million dollars in a couple months. And many of the victims are likely elderly or late - middle aged, simply not familiar with computer and related technology because they never had to be; and just as often living on a small/fixed income. They scare and confuse users by misrepresenting system functions and programs.
    I actually just assisted a client of mine who was nearly scammed, she had purchased a roku and in the process of setting it up was presented with a link to enter on her computer. She entered the link into her browsers search bar instead of address bar, and one of the first results was a scammer masquerading as roku support. He had her run some commands via command prompt and basically tried to scare her with something unfamiliar to most. Fortunately my client was familiar with the command prompt and grew suspicious (the fact that she called for roku setup help and was being sold PC tech support should have been a red flag itself).
    Anyways they wanted $300 dollars for 5 years of tech support, when they needed her to call the bank to clear the payment is when she finally grew to suspicious to continue, and when she didn't pay the threatened to call the police and "lock up" her computer. Of course they didn't do the former, and were likely to incompetent to do the latter. They did delete chrome from her program files, I believe in an attempt to have her call back and pay as her "internet" wasn't working. She had her card cancelled and called me to look over everything.

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you - although I'm not currently doing this at the moment (busy, and I got burned out on it after a while). Also, this particular call was a unique opportunity regarding an attempt at refunds; usually they don't attempt to log into their own payment gateway using their victim's computer.
      Interesting story regarding your client there, and a fortunate stroke of irony that she pasted a 'malicious' link into a search engine rather than the address bar. They could have maybe applied the SAM security lock (famous 'syskey') on her PC, but calling the police? Oh how I wish one of them had threatened me with that! At least they merely deleted a browser; some of them will delete anything they can - even attempting system32 (though that rarely works due to permissions of course. For _that_, they'd need a bit more time and know-how to elevate the permissions). But yes oftentimes the scammer will attempt to create a problem on the victim's computer, hoping that it'll create a need to call back for support. Thinking on how many people this probably happens to, who don't report it... not pleasant.

    Secondly, your fake name, James Brady, was my father’s name. He passed away several years ago. It was nice seeing his name, kinda like he was saying hi lol.
    Lastly, the flies were freakishly realistic. I was reading something while listening to your video. When I looked back at your video there were all these “bugs” on my screen. I had to check several times to be sure they weren’t real!
    Keep up the good work. Your efforts are truly appreciated by many.

      Much appreciated. It did take hours, but was entirely worth it. When given such a rare opportunity, it would have been wasteful not to try.

      The elderly are their demographic of choice and if you look at the demographic they are trying to get ads directed to it is older age groups when they set up where they want popups directed. I work at a day center for elderly that are staying in their own homes rather than choosing a facility to live in. One of the biggest issues we deal with is elderly that have been scammed out of what is often their life savings or at least a good chunk of the money they had extra for the month they were scammed in. Their scams of course work well with anyone not well versed in using a computer and never heard of tech support scammers but more and more the chance that anyone under 60 has not is a long shot, so they do start drooling when they get a call from someone obviously in their later years. We do all we can to educate and remind our clients about scams but the problem is that often in later years people's memories for things are not as sharp as they were in previous years. We still hear about these scams more often after the fact event though they see out 'watch out for this scam' posters they see on tehir weekly visits to the center and the write ups that we include in the newsletter we send out. Also, as some get older if what they are hearing from a scammer is not exactly what was put forth on a poster or in a newsletter they think its 'not the scammers because they did not say that', the warning has to be much more concrete. The last case we had the person even admitted that the scammer asked if she had an friends that might need tech support and she handed out names and phone numbers so I am sure many cold calls came from that connection also. Most of those that have given into a scammer, even having been made aware that these scams happen will tell us later that either the warning was about bit different or they were really scared that something was happening and totally forgot warnings they had gotten previously. With some elderly they do take and expect things to be very literal so if a scam does not run in the exact same lines we reported happening to another then the think they have gotten a legit company but I think the fear factor makes the biggest impact. We actually tell out clients not to contact a number that pops up but to call the center instead because we have a group of volunteers that will go out and personally fix anything that might be wrong if anything is. It would be very nice if there was a third level of protection we could add to the computer of an elderly client that looked for certain activities like a remote connection from certain IPs the running of certain commands and some of the other steps scammers take that would remind clients using a tool-tip like box that they maybe be a victim of of a scam and if the connection is not from a trusted relative or friend not to allow access, etc.

      aboslutely Nick @ you absolutely schooling this asshat with MAC addressing and HTTP/HTTPS and so on.... far out.... i was sitting here like "Dude just dropped more knowledge on this guy than he knows what to do with" ^_^

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I could have told him how many groups of hex digits a MAC address is, the first half and second half significance... I barely scratched the surface with him. Shocked he didn't know such basic things (for a 'technician'). I don't expect everyone to know a lot of the terms I throw out sometimes, but _these_ guys should know some...

    Good work Nick, great vid as usual and you have bonus points if you can get those peoples money back. Ahhhhhh those flies looked a sunday lunchtime bbq during a summers day and shooshing the flies away and giving them the aussie wave.

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's hope so - I'll be watching for any responses from them. I have no idea if I was able to refund them properly, and surely he noticed his account being logged into as well.
      The flies...I'm still trying to work out what I even mean with them. Disrespect, probably; flies are attracted to shit as they say.

      Where do you even go online to see these? lol
      I guess i never see them since I have an ad blocker.

    • @ScorpioNick
      @ScorpioNick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To find them yourself, it's usually just typing in common URLs (for example youtube.com) with spelling mistakes. An ad blocker does cut down on popups, and I have to disable my anti-virus/malware, because that often detects it and overwrites the page.
