The way you did your butt and pass was the way I thought of too. This way you measure all the logs the same length(if it's a square cabin) and don't have short and long ones. Totally made sense to me. You spiral one way on the first layer, then spiral the opposite way on the next layer. Keep alternating back and forth. Seems like it would be faster to me. I love the way you notched the side to accept the butt of the other side log. Thinking of trying this type of building.

Thanks a lot. I have always liked the look of butt and pass I want my corners to look seamless from the inside so I came up with the 2” notch idea. All my logs are 18’ I measured 16’2” to the notch and it gives me 16’ inside dimensions. Works out quite well

Is the butt and pass a style preference for you? I had settled on this myself since I have zero experience but after watching all these people on TH-cam doing the classic saddle notches I think I can do that.

I’ve always liked the simplicity of the butt and pass style I imagine I’ll build a saddle notch style one day

@@allthingswood2001 do you suppose there's benefits over one of the over the other or is it just a style preference?

There are some advantages. Less time consuming less shrinkage I’m sure they is more

@@ftnwo868 but and pass last longer . Your not cutting in deep to heart of wood .like you do with saddle notch . Most but and pass doesn't cut into the wood at all . Just layering it on top of each other
