Off Grid Log Cabin Quickly Taking Shape

  • You never know until you try and that's exactly what I"m discovering as I get underway building my first log cabin. I"m not stranger to construction but up until now I've used dimensional lumber with consistent building materials. As the log cabin construction takes shape I quickly realize that it's not quite as precise as what I"m used to. I think that's what makes this so appealing. The rustic look has me hooked already as I admire the look of the first couple rows of logs. I'm certainly looking forward to continuing to add to this off grid log cabin and am sure many future projects down the road will also start going into my long-term plans. Glad you're all here for this journey! Here we go!

    Watching you struggle with that recalcitrant log reminded me that years ago we wanted a stone face on a bridge that I was in charge of. We went through five different contractors before we found one that would do the job. This guy looked like he came out of retirement to do the work. I asked why it was so hard to find a stone mason. His reply has stuck with me throughout my career… “Bob,” he said “you gotta be smarter than the material your working with.”

    Nice work so far Sandy. Hey, you should take one or two of those cut off ends, put them in your lathe and turn them into mallets for knocking and positioning those heavy logs. It'll save your hands and reduce fatigue. As far as the generator goes, it may be a clogged fuel filter, fuel pump or even a leaking fuel line. I hope you can diagnose and repair it. The look you gave the camera when you tried drilling those pilot holes and realized the generator was off was priceless. Cheers!

    Just a little tip...If you put a 4x4 in each of the two corners and one on each side of the front and then stake them off plumb,you will have a guide to put the rest of the walls up without having to worry about them being plumb.

    What I do in situations similar to keep the stack going up true I screw and brace a nice straight 4by4 in the corners and plumb and brace them off ...you can measure in from center of each log to the 4by4 if you want to be more exact....you can put the 4by4 on inside or outside of corner in your case what ever you prefer

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would do the trick real nice. Main issue I was having with getting a plumb piece was that the logs are different diameters so I was having to eye-ball the middle of the log.

  • @deprived56501
    @deprived56501 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not sure how accurate you need to be to keep the walls plumb and square but what I did on my cabin was to snap a center line visually on each log and plumb some vertical poles in each corner to reference the centerline distance. that way you wont have to guess visually. Also it might be wise to take a little time to cut a kerf about 1/3 the distance to log center on the flat. The log will check there under the log covering it up from above and you will be less apt to have large cracks on the outside surface of the logs when they cure over time. Doing a good job though. Keep up the good work!!

    Looking Sweeeeet! I seem to have read your look of frustration when the log fell off. Suggestion get several pieces of 1X4 about 12 inches long and put screws in the lower 6 inches and screw those onto the lower logs with six inches on each side to help hold the log in place while making your adjustment cuts you could get away with 4 pieces and remove them and move up each layer. Also you could use a plumb bob attached to a jib pole on the inside to help keep walls straight. My grand mother used to say make the inside straight and true and let the outside fend for itself. Just my thoughts. Stay safe Jla🤠

    Hey Sandy I don't know somebody's suggested this if yet maybe if you had some 1 by 3 by 3 ft concrete wood stakes and about 8 3 inch short screws you can put you some uprights say a foot-and-a-half in from the inside wall on the outside go a quarter of the way when you're working with your logs you have something to retain them inside you're vertical wall structure hey maybe you have some debris in the tank or hopefully you have a fuel filter on there that needs to be either drain door replaced

      I've heard this as well for various fastening methods. For the screws they say you don't have to do any pre drilling which is some of the appeal I suppose. I was just giving about a 1/2" at the top but likely didn't need to as they drive right in

      It'll be like a cabin with a big door on the front for storing equipment

    Looking good. I see your first batch of biting critters have arrived. Ours are probably a couple days out. Fishing season opener was today. Lakes still partially iced.

      Thanks for coming along for the video Kerry. There's a recommended log screw length from the manufacturer based on the log diameter that I've been going on in this case

    Looks nice, Sandy. Regarding the plumb of your walls, you should try to line up the pith of your logs vertically. I think it will look better than lining up the in-\outside of the wall. Keep up the good work.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with ya there Torsten. That was what I have been trying to do by eye with some success since the logs vary a good bit in diameter. I figure as long as it's close I"l be good to go

    OUTSTANDING start on the project, Sandy. I would do the back logs that are inside the side logs a little differently. I would set a screw at the open end of one side log and screw the other side log tight. I would square both ends of the back log and screw it down, and then butt the second side log against it and screw it down. This saves trimming the end log in a attempt to make it fit tight between the two side logs. Your idea of a vertical post to tie the open ends together, along with a header is also an excellent idea, and I even know a guy in your area with a sawmill who'll cut them for you!! It's looking good, buddy. Keep it up...............
