Why would someone say something bad about others when YOU only hear about them in the NEWS but those are FEW and FAR IN-BETWEEN. How about other rich people who YOU HAVEN'T EVEN HEARD OF? Do you even know how many millionaires there are in the U.S.? Also, last thing. I am not defending rich people because I know some are not good people, but some are good also. I haven't met all of them either so I am not going to say they are mostly good or bad. What I am just pointing out is your attitude in a specific group of people which is pretty negative, even when you haven't even met them in real life. I have met millionaires and they are some of the nicest and the MOST GENEROUS people. They are given an opportunity to give back to others and help them and they do it out of their generosity, and not because they are on TV, or in the NEWS.

Dating for idols is such a hard topic. It’s especially hard when they are dating a “commoner” because i can understand them wanting to protect their significant other’s identity and privacy but announcing out of the blue marriage and baby can also do a lot of harm. Like Chen from EXO for example who to this day people are cursing and attacking him online and demanding he thrown out of the group. On the other hand, an idol announcing they are dating a commoner can make paparazzi want to invade their privacy and stalk them to take pictures.

@@taylorslade961 it's complicated. Not really. In reality, this is a relationship. You need to PAY ATTENTION on how these idols talk to thier fans and interact with them. It's important. Maybe because I work in communications, graduated in communications and sociology its more clear to me.
Many create a toxic and rabid Fandom consciously and unconsciously. It seems these big labels in South Korea know exactly what they are doing and how they are doing it.

On the case of Idols dating, I think the companies spend so much money on them that the companies don't want to see their investments fail, so they create these para-social relationships between the idols and the fans to keep the money rolling. But on the other hand, idol life can really take a mental toll on them when the fans hold these idols to this unreasonable standards and expect them to only have relationships with the other members of their group and the fans and no one else.
When Jackson was on Dive Studios and talked about leaving a light on in his apartment so when he got home he felt like there was something there to great him or welcome him home, it just made me think that I'd much rather have my idol in a relationship that can give him/her the comfort and mental stability that a fan/idol relationship cannot give them.

About fact checking. I think it would be helpful to the listeners if you’d get official sources when talking about specific events. Kinda like your kpop news show with articles from example Soompi. And then continue the conversation from there. As the Lucas scandal started as a gaslighting scandal. Which I myself had to fact check while listening to the podcast as I got confused over you calling it a cheating scandal. (Which is also part of the allegations.) But not having the official story and just speaking from memory, you could easily forget or mix up details. Especially when speaking about things that happened some time ago. And can possibly lead to more misinformation. Also starting with giving some background on the topic you are going to talk about would also help listeners that might not know all the details about certain topics to grasp at least a basic understanding of it.

You know what I think makes the whole dating thing worse: the competition between the fandoms within kpop. I remember having a fight with someone about superM when I said: how couldn't you predict that some fans are gonna fight when putting people from groups together that are in direct competition to each other even if the same company. And thats just with them interacting in the group, so if you apply that to dating between idols. A whole mess

I think that views on idol dating are changing but slowly. Despite the bf/gf image kpop companies usually try to create, I’m glad some idols are allowed to set their boundaries. I think that’s why iKON Bobby getting married w a baby on the way was mostly congratulated and iKONIKS were happy for him. His attitude is usually just playful and talks jokingly toward fans. A lot of other idols are like that too - like plainly saying no when fans ask if they can be their bf/gf. They should be allowed to draw that line…it’s so cringe to ask anyway.

Many interesting and valid points were made on whether idols should date or not and the impact it would have on their careers, the company's investment in them and the lives of the people whom they dated👍
However, I would also like to see a discussion on Fans who chose to actually date idols. It's easy to say they were just so mesmerized and blinded with love that they pursued or went along with dating an idol.
But the power these fans have, is with the click of a button they could ruin an idols career over night depending on the personal information they chose to expose, while idols who are deprived from normal family and romantic lives are expected to be completely satisfied being alone with many fleeting interactions with fans. And to forever fight off fans throwing themselves at them never having a moment of weakness.
How many people end up dating the wrong person just because they were around during the tough times saying just the right things... The same can be said for idols who might be facing mental or physical problems unknown to the general public and along comes a fan who promises to be the most loving/caring/perfect partner ever, only for it not to work out and the fan now sits with personal information that could destroy the idols career that was built over many years.
Also, if an idol pursues a fan, to start with should the fan even accept knowing the possible damage/destruction it would cause to that very same idol they claim to 'love' if the public found out. And if fans wanted to protect their fave idols and see their career prosper, shouldn't there be a general understanding to not cross the line by actually dating an idol. While para-social relationships are big in the Kpop landscape, real life and meaningful off-camera relationships are just as important to the lives of idols and their overall and mental wellbeing.
Disclaimer: I'm not saying all fans are like this, but just that I would like to see a discussion around this part of fan culture. There are more things I'd like to mention but my fingers give up... Also thanks to anyone who read till the end❤

If my ult bias started openly dating, I think I would be the tiniest bit jealous, to be completely transparent. But at the end of the day, all I want is for him to be happy, and imagine living most of your career without being able to openly date and find that happiness because it would upset your fans! We have to grasp the reality that these idols will NEVER pick us, so why should our infatuation prevent them from being able to date??? But I'm also a grown adult in a happy marriage, so my perspective may be very different from younger fans.

I find it very uncomfortable that idols have to give the “boyfriend/girlfriend experience” especially considering fans are often much older or much younger than said idols or that they must act like they don’t date just to keep that idea alive in their fans. But at the same time I know that parasocial relationships are integral to the capitalism of KPop so it’s not something that can easily stop. But there’s gotta be a better way than to expect idols to put their love lives secret just for the public’s benefit? They already don’t get to be with their families and give up their adolescence to train and grind through the rookie years. Can’t they have this one thing without people starting to shout how they must not care about their fans?

16:10 Tszyu's situation was very, very political. I'm from Hong Kong, and back then it was all over tabloid news. From Western countries point of view, Hong Kong and especially Taiwan are not really a part of China. Most Western countries even consider Taiwan as it's own nation. Tszyu's action from her and our point of view may seem an innocent action of waving her country's flag. However, China never wanted to acknowledge that Taiwan is their own country, so most people and fans from China were angry at her.
Now, JYPE asking her to apologize back then might have two different reasonings:
1, unlikely) JYP wanted to protect Tszyu. Since back when this controversy came up, she was still a young teenager, she wanted to protect her from aggressive haters, so asking her to apologize ASAP so that the whole controversy would be over soon and thus she wouldn't be bothered by haters. Or,
2, very likely) Back then, JYPE (and most of KPOP companies, i.e SM) was very heavy on promoting in Chinese China's market. You can tell by most of these K-pop group that having a Chinese member especially if they are from China, is most likely that the company wanted them to be promoted in China. Tszyu waving her Taiwanese flag is seen by the China fans that she sees Taiwan is not a part of china which means she is against china, angered Chinese fans. And JYPE was afraid that they might not be able to promote there ao they immediately ask tszyu to apologize.
It was very political. And super messy.

There's so much to unpack. I agree that Idols dating has gotten better over the years but I still feel like there's more work to be done. It's no secret that idols date & that they lie about dating bans. There are so many ex Kpop stars talking about this now a days. There are so many industry insiders spilling tea about it so it's no secret. But on the flip side I feel like fans run with it to much.
Like I feel like people actively go out of there way to see if there idol is dating. Then they bring it up & it blows up, there have been so many dating rumors that are just dumb or built from nothing. Mark(NCT) & Arin(EX-Momland) being the latest one. It's almost like fans are now waiting for a I GOT CHA moment. I think there's nothing wrong with being aware that idols date & your fav is probably dating. But to actively compare there post to other male/female idols to say there are hints of them dating is a little weirdo to me. & kind of a invasion of privacy to me a little (even if it was true and they were posting hints)
A remember a several years ago people were in favor of dating bans. Cause they were noticing Kpop stars were getting younger (there wasn't a under age debuting boom at the time but idols were debuting younger then in pervious years). Alot of people said it was good cause they can focus on there career and mature. The ban would end when they are an adult, mature & reaping the benefits of there own work. I also think this is why so many idols are being debuted under age. So there young fans can gaslight themselves into thinking there not dating cause there to "young".
Parasocialism is weird in itself. Cause friend zoning can be just as dangerous as boyfriend/girlfriend fan service. I've only seen it talked about a few times. But alot people that see idols as there friends see it as a grounds to trama dump on them or look at them for validation. Ive only seen this called out a couple of times. I believe this ironically happened to a ATEEZ member where a fan sent one the members a letter explaining all the traumatic stuff that had happened to her & how stanning him & the group helped her. He read it on a fan call or something. You could tell he didn't know how to handle what he just read & alot of fans were upset about this.
On the Lucus thing, I was talking to my NCT friend when this happened. And we both kind of said; Not us, not our problem. I personally said I feel bad for the girls in the situation but at the end of the day I didn't date him. He didn't screw me over. So I move on & he should be let back in the group. This statement still gives me mixed feelings cause I really do feel for the girls in the situation but I didn't date Lucus & will never date Lucus at the end of the day. And that doesn't bother me at all. I wasnt shocked either cause he always gave me f*ck boy vibes.
I kind of see Kpop as a whole as entertainment and music. These stars are here to give me music, a laugh, & merch to hoard. I like there on screen personalities and thats kind of it. If they date I'm chill with it. As long as the bops don't stop.
The only time I'll reconsider staning someone due to a dating scandal. Is if they are outted as an abuser. I dont mess with that.

    Should idols date?
Yes... You shouldn't put on hold entire part of your personal life. Because they are either going to date in secret and always look back their shoulder and live in anxiety or they are gonna actually not date, which is even worse, because now they are collecting emotional dept to their fans and company, because they missed out on an important part of their lives and personal development. You dated, right? I assume that even if it didn't work out, that was important experience for you where you learned about a thing or two about yourself and relationships...
Have you seen that video of a 30+ year idol breaking down on camera, because he received backlash for dating for the first time in his life? That sad... No wonder all these idols keep having mental health issues

I love the chat about Lucas! I think it’s such a interesting topic because Idols are just people…. Light and darkness. Just because you like singing, and dancing and are hot doesn’t mean anything about where you come from, who you are , your life experiences and your morals as a person. I think it’s good that we want our celebrities to be high quality people , but realistically it’s just not the case and honestly will never be truly part of the job description. Makes me think of people in politics 👀👀👀👀👀. A lot of questionable people have dreams and aspirations of being famous , and in fact do succeed and are beloved . Anywho back to Lucas. I am totally drawn to him. I think he has a sexy voice, is a great dancer, and has this sex appeal that makes him red hot on stage. That being said im totally NOT surprised that he could be a player, manipulator, gaslighter and other alleged things because this is real life and these are the qualities a lot of people have. It takes me back to for example R Kelly, who has actually been convicted of crimes-- do you have to be a great person in order to be a great artist? Can you still celebrate art/ artists when you know the demons behind them ? These are are questions. I really like Lucas and im happy he is coming back - because I love what he brings to the stage. Im just not surprised that he could behave like this as people must literally be throwing themselves at him and not really caring about important boundaries-- especially fan girls at young ages. I could see him being a 🐺

Because why would they let certain image-ruining scandals? Also HYBE must be paying big money to make sure there's almost nothing on BTS bc how do 7 men with careers spanning almost 10 years never actually get caught in public with a partner/significant other (except the V/Jennie thing if we're to believe that)?

When the Taeyong bullying scandal happened, they did confirm that he bullied the person and that Taeyong apologized in person. Chanyeol's cheating scandal didn't even affect him, SM chose not to comment when the "proof" came out and just let it run its course, and Chanyeol didn't apologize because he didn't do anything wrong. The wording of both Lucas' and SM's statements about this situation still leave me wondering if at least some of what was said is true, both of them citing Lucas' "wrong behavior" and Lucas calling what he did "irresponsible". Then there was the random man that came out of the woodwork and said he dated Lucas so people were starting to speculate if he was queer, it was a mess.

I was talking about what happened in 2019, I never saw the follow-up in 2020 where it was proven that they lied, so that was wrong. Yeah, there's no evidence to prove it happened because it happened in his personal life, we're never going to know the truth unless it's explicitly told to us. My comment was fairly neutral, only questioning the situation, but I know where you clearly stand on the issue. Victims shouldn't need to continue proving themselves when they're doubted. They said their piece, what else is there to say?

You definitely aren’t alone in your negativity, but maybe view yourself like a rare blood type and fully lean into it, AB-negative. As for dating, it makes sense to worry about the safety of kpop artists and whoever they’re seeing coz we all know fans can be vicious. But things will never change if they don't try to break the stigma and be more open about being in relationships, even if they keep their partners’ identities secret, so that their fans' possessiveness can ease up, if not disappear right away

I think people forget (or maybe haven’t seen) the statement posted on weibo by Label V regarding the Lucas situation.
FYI: Label V is SM Entertainment’s Chinese sub-label, exclusively for management of WayV.
An extract from the statement (translated): “At this moment, LUCAS (Huang Xuxi) is strongly aware that his past wrong words and behaviour has caused great harm to others, and he is currently in deep reflection. The company also feels that there were shortcomings in the management of our artists and bears an unshirkable responsibility for this.”

Okay I don't usually comment twice. But I want to comment on what Angelina said about the personality on camera thing. Cause I studied film making & volunteered at a local TV station. And I've been told that psychologically speaking we tend to automatically act different when we are being filmed. & sometimes you don't even notice it yourself. So there is definitely truth in kpop stars switch personality on camera.
That being said as cheesy as it sounds idols are people too. So some will be nice, some will be aholes, some will be something in between.
I also know people that work in the American entertainment industry. And they told me stories of the celebrities they meet & it's a mixed bag. Some were very nice, while others were down right awful. But like you said these are people & people can be flawed. It just good to. remember that nobody leans fully into being 100% nice or 100% mean.

On Lucas. People go so hard from one extreme to the other, but almost everything in this world deserves more nuance.
Some people are so quick to defend him, denying the allegations without proof. Or some don’t care what he did they just want to keep him around for their own boyfriend fantasy.
What he was accused of is awful, shameful, and honestly so embarrassing (like what’s with getting your girlfriend who you’re cheating on to buy you, a celebrity, designer brand stuff?). Literally we have no clue how much of it is true. I tend to think the truth probably lies in the middle, maybe his behavior wasn’t that good but the girls are also lying about some of it or exaggerating or they misread his intentions and he wasn’t trying to mislead them.
[Tangent: I very much think the same thing about Kim Garam from Le Sserafim was that her name? I don’t even really follow them but I got mad about her being canceled for what clearly to me seemed to be high school drama that got a bit intense but wasn’t the exclusive fault of any one party involved]
Regardless! We don’t know. The thing is, even if Lucas did some or all of what he was accused of, why does it follow that he should lose his career? That he shouldn’t be able to sing or dance on stage? Who decides the level of virtue and purity an idol needs to reach before they can thrust their hips on camera? Maybe idols shouldn’t be your role models to begin with. I know some idols I look up to in some respects but I don’t know them. I can’t vouch for their integrity.
I’m glad Lucas took time off because I do think these things are serious but I believe that people can change, no people are just bad people, we’re all a bundle of bad and good that can get better. I want him to be better because I want him to be happy, because he’s my brother in the human race. More importantly, I’m not his judge and neither are the rest of you. The court of public opinion is a kangaroo court. It’s not our place to condemn him, I hope he fixes his personal issues and returns to WayV and NCT because he has a great voice and good stage presence and that’s what you should care about as a fan of a band.

Not me laughing my ass off with Angelina and Audrey because I got cheated on too twice and it's such a terrible feeling.
Honestly I hated Lucas at first when the accusations came out, I was like, how can he be so terrible, doesn't he care about people's emotions. But overtime I've kind of forgiven? Him because in all honesty we don't know and hating on someone without evidence is basically futile and wasting my energy hating him without any evidence was more crazy.
I just feel Idols have too much pressure sometimes and it must be hard, (I'm not trying to justify cheating in any shape or form don't our words in my mouth I swear 🤡)
I just feel since they're such public figures it is extremely hard for them to have a romantic life in front of everyone, it's sad because even if they didn't have dating bans, paparazzi would still follow them and there would still be news articles and malicious comments and that honestly sucks, being famous must be amazing but it still must suck a lot, there are a lot of things that you can't even do when you're like peak famous... You can't even have dates or be seen together in a public place, or in case of K-pop have your own Twitter or Instagram so that you can share your opinion, it sucks honestly, I feel real bad for these idols.

Angelina, being not super fluffy and not liking everything is why you’re the only Kpop TH-camr I still watch (and yep4andy). Liking everything and trying to please everyone is so fake. People do it because they don’t wanna face the hate which is totally understandable, but it’s boring and I hope you will never ever take internet hate seriously because it’s just lame and childish.
And Audrey you’re perfect for the podcast as well because you might be a bit more positive than Angelina but you don’t like everything either and you’re not afraid to say it, and you can both disagree with each other in a respectful, but fun and not overly guarded way. Anyways the podcast is great keep it up :V

@ 19:00 she is talking about Hyunkin from Stray Kids (JYP boy group) and I think it was pretty much confirmed that Hyunjin was, in fact, a bully. And Hyunjin did upload an apology. Not saying an apology absolves all, I'm just saying this is how it went. And yes, he was removed from Kingdom super quick and he did have a hiatus but came back after some months. Some people thought it was too soon considering some artists were being completely dropped from their groups for bullying. But of course there are levels. I think some of the people that were bullies did worse things than others. Maybe there is more going on behind the scenes we may never know. I, for one, hate bullies no matter what.

For the life of me , to the deepest part of my heart , I just know that Lucas is innocent and that he was wronged . Call it a gut feeling that I have but everything that happened to Lucas was so sudden , it literally took me a month at most at that time when all of this was going down to realize that these rumours was being taken seriously by SM and Netizens that I truely grasped the situation and did my research on this . Everything about this "case" seems sketchy as hell as if these people was waiting for the right timing to target Lucas . I agree with you when you mentioned that companies especially SM never defend their artist when untrue statements and fake rumours are being thrown at them and I honestly think that played a huge role in the way Netizens and the general public viewed Lucas as a person . In some cases no comment is the best way to deal with a situation but I think SM really needed to defend Lucas with proof that these allegations were wrong and let people move on with their lives especially WAYV and Lucas . The online cyber bullying Lucas went trough is what I hope no one has to ever experience because it looked like these bullies were holding weapons and their only target was Lucas.

I think it definitely depends on if an idol is dating another idol publicly or an idol dating a non-idol publicly. If idols date each-other publicly I think the negatives out-way the positives. For example if they were to break up like western artists; like the Olivia Rodrigo/Joshua Basset situationship I can predict a lot of hate would happen; people would take sides and some k-pop fans are very dedicated to their favorite group/idol. It only worked with Hyuna and Dawn because of this "fairytale" story fans have of them leaving their groups/company to be together. If it's a non-idol I feel that fans would be a lot more open, and if they were ever to break up the partner doesn't have the fame to create a fanwar, it'll just be brushed away. I personally don't care if idols date publicly, but if they do (and are as messy as western artists/ everyday people) I can only imagine the hate they'd face.

My thing with Lucas is like. IF the stories are true, it sounds to me like these girls got mad because he just wanted to hook up and not to be in a relationship. A lot of guys do that. A lot of celebrities do that. If anything, it puts his character into question. But it’s not illegal? So I don’t understand why it’s such a huge deal if he’s not as squeaky clean as SM pretends he is? There’s so much speculation and doubt surrounding those claims too. I just don’t care and I don’t think it should end his careet
