Her voice, her cadence, the palpible mood heavy with pathos, it's all unlike any sound I've ever heard, there's something to be said about a triple-threat songwriter, composer, and vocalist who literally transforms your perception of the world. This song is really a journey.
Lyrics for those who might be interested. All the parts of me that lived inside Are drowning in the sea of waking life They don't know their colors don't belong on the outside They don't know their colors don't belong Til they're spread across the open road Til they're spread across the asphalt on the open road Til they're streaming in the wind like cassette tape or jellyfish Long dark veins and records playing memories All the things we yell don't mean a thing When we're spinning out of darkened meadow wind When we're flying like we're Mary's angels through the shattered glass When we find that tall dark shadow waiting there with outstretched hands He has given me a dress of red and you a skin of gray We'll be twisting here for hours 'til the light will bring us day And we're spread across the open road And we're spread across the asphalt on the open road And we're streaming in the wind like cassette tape or jellyfish Long dark veins and records playing memories
This is such beautiful song and the lyrics manage to sound poetically beautiful as well even though, to me at least, it seems like its clearly about a car crash and the first two blocks are entirely about the details of being eviscerated and dying, followed by a regretful explanation that the cause of the crash was an argument between lovers. It's unexpectedly very dark and rightfully depressing.
I wish artists like Chelsea Wolfe were played on the radio and celebrated for their talent rather than the fake plastic frauds of the pop industry that are only famous for looks and catchy songs that they didn't write and that don't mean anything. I wish Chelsea all the best and hope she gets more attention for the sake of her music reaching more people.
WE’RE SPREAD ACROSS THE OPEN ROAD AND WE’RE SPREAD ACROSS THE ASPHALT ON THE OPEN ROAD AND WE’RE STREAMING IN THE WIND LIKE CASSETTE TAPE OR JELLYFISH LONG DARK VEINS AND RECORDS PLAYING MEMORIES fuck yea! that's how you write lyrics and execute divine melody. I'm STRUCK. Music for the heart and soul.
That would suggest a deep and poignant depression in you. The beautiful music was able to poke at whatever is wrong and bring you some form of catharsis. Whatever is wrong, may you be healed as soon as today 🤘🏾
Keep coming back to this wonder of a song. Really, it is more than just a song. It speaks like a bursting flower that cannot wait for the Sun’s warmth. It must be felt from within. This is lonely passion entombed in melody and lyric. Chelsea bears her soul. Thank you. ⛅️🗝🤍
She is such an accomplished artist. i do hope that her life brings her as much fullfillness as her music brings me when I listen to it. What a load of emotions she can unravell... Thumbs and heart way up
I absolutely love this particular recording of Half sleeper. It’s so honest, eerie and thought provoking . Chelsea can somehow make the violence of a car accident beautiful in an unnerving way. I love the gentle, yet complete absence of safety here that isn’t lost in a sea of voices which makes this recording more personal. I hope this version ends up on an album some day because it is amazing.
Please don't be gone , this video helped me so many times that I've a depression and so many years I came back here, I still amazing and stunning her voice and her guitar, why this is so magical , god I love you.
I love how she picks the guitar at the end of this. I think she was muting the string semi-accidentally at first, but she decided to ride it through to the end. It gave the ending this extra tension and edge that fit the song so perfectly! By the last few chords it was like she was pissed off at the guitar. What an incredible song.
I'm not sure... Every once in awhile little things can happen with guitar that might not be 100 percent on purpose to begin with- But they sound cool so you ride it out. I might be reading it totally wrong, but it really feels like one of those moments where something got a little clunky but instead of hiding from it she strummed even more aggressively and it was like a little F you moment to her own mistake. I think I like the story better that way even if it isn't true. haha.
It surprised me the first time I heard it only because I don’t think I had heard something like this before and I then thought it was intentional, but as a long-time musician who knows a lot of career musicians, it’s just as likely you are correct, and if so, it’s a sign of a whole lot of experience playing live, contrary to what one might think.
This woman just captures you in her music like not many artists can do these days.....one of the most purely beautiful and talented women in the music industry today
She sings this song so phenomenally in this video. It comes in waves of emotion and energy. Just gets me, almost makes me cry. Great lyrics. And she is so gorgeous is an artsy way.
All the parts of me that lived inside Are drowning in the sea of waking life They don't know their colors don't belong on the outside They don't know their colors don't belong Until they're spread across the open road Til they're spread across the asphalt on the open road Til they're streaming in the wind like cassette tape or jellyfish Long dark veins and records playing memories All the things we yelled don't mean a thing When we're spinning out on dark and metal wind When we're flying like blue mary's angels through shattered glass When we find the tall black shadow waiting there with outstretched hands He has given me a dress of red and you a skin of gray We'll be twisting here for hours til the light will give us day We're spread across the open road And we're spread across the asphalt on the open road And we're streaming in the wind like cassette tape or jellyfish Long dark veins and records playing memories
Her Flagship! I keep coming back. But it is painful at the same time. Probably the best natural voice out there. I cry a bit every time. This time too.. dammit!
I saw Chelsea play in Japan with Boris and Sunn 0))) and it was awesome. Her voice, songwriting and lyrics are all amazing. She has a really mesmerising stage presence.
This recording is amazing with just her and a guitar. Its so hard to get an idea in her videos of how good she is live... The band.. Is so doooom and gloom. I have watched so many recordings and .. Just gutta be there..
Her voice is so powerful, but watching the actual video, she looks so fragile. Almost like Cobain at Unplugged. I just wanna grab her and give her the biggest hug ever
I completely agree. She looks like a weight is pushing her down and that she is not completely present during the video as if she were looking somewhere past everything in the room with her.
Wow the voice loops sound like Frippertronics at the end. This is really beautiful. Found my way here because of her cover of 'I Let Love In'. Really good.
I come here often to cry to her voice, it helps with the sadness
"the waves have come" gets me every time
hahaha gay
Chelsea is literally like a siren. Her voice is so haunting. The last passage makes me feel like she’s calling out to the void
dunno what you mean by haunting but her voice is a light in the dark. go see her perform. it's an opening not a void : P
Her voice, her cadence, the palpible mood heavy with pathos, it's all unlike any sound I've ever heard, there's something to be said about a triple-threat songwriter, composer, and vocalist who literally transforms your perception of the world.

„Transforms your perception of the world” . So true.
Beautifully said.
Wao! She's the queen of darkness. The lyrics seem to open the gates of the otherside, I would add to your beautiful love letter, I dare to.
💜💜💜💜💜
I’m in an extremely dark place right now but her music is very comforting.
I feel you man
I've heard 3 versions of half sleeper and this one is the best buy a million miles. Way better than the album version.
Her voice is so beautiful and so haunting that it actually physically hurts me.
I get the same full body warm wave vibe from Chelsea as I did when I first heard Hope Sandoval in the mid 90's.
which part of ur body is physically hurt ?
Same. Especially the last part. Pretty disturbing and catchy at the same time so I can't stop rewinding
You re awake when all 6 has gone?
9 years later and this still hits just as hard as the the first time I heard it
she paints the most vivid pictures in my head with this song. It's incredible.
Chelsea Ocel - Your name is Chelsea also! It's a beautiful name.
She is a spirit of another time..her eyes look beyond and her voice is simply captivating
Right?! Her EYES.

When we find that tall dark shadow waiting there with outstretched hands
He has given me a dress of red and you a skin of gray
We'll be twisting here for hours 'til the light will bring us day

Exactly! Couldn’t have said it better myself.
I like hidden treasures like this. She deserves the world but having her to ourselves makes her all the more special.
I do totally agree with you though.
Just discovered her on the radio
You are so real.
Every version I hear her play of this song blows my mind like I’m hearing it for the first time, every time. Amazing! 😌🩶🩶🩶
one of those artists that are much better live than recorded
Around as good I would say.
bruh, dont make me cry, just meant to see her live in Glasgow, got canceled becase of this corona bulshit :/
to be fair, shes also really good on her recordings but ill agree she's even better live

You can see her getting in some sort of trance-state while she is playing this song. Magical and beautiful!
that's not a trance... that's Bell's palsy.
I literally cried when I saw her perform this song live.
And yet they don´r
I'm losing it watching the video 😢
That would suggest a deep and poignant depression in you. The beautiful music was able to poke at whatever is wrong and bring you some form of catharsis. Whatever is wrong, may you be healed as soon as today 🤘🏾
@@Witchyone131same comment as I just wrote above to you too
@@Aenigmakil for you maybe. For others it means they are in touch with their souls, their beauty, their empathy.

Such brutal simplicity and truth in "All the things we yell don't mean a thing
when we're spinning out of darkened meadow wind."
Listening to the record is one thing, but taking it live is another dimension. Superb!

Mississippi Dave I really doubt a long time talented musician would accidentally make that mistake haha. but yeah, it's a cool vibe.

Mississippi Dave ...yea she's knokin' it love it...kinda outta tune....on purpose yes
Crywank kind of does that too interesting effect.

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. You make me cry Chelsea, what you do is overwhelming.
For me she is a siren. She can control me with her voice...
She's one of the most phenomenal contemporary artists.
a masterpiece, just A MASTERPIECE and Chelsea is music goddess..so deep, I can't describe it with words, something unreally and unearthly beautiful..
God that was from the heart.. I wept

Gott ich liebe ihr Stimme. Sie klingt wie kaltes, klares Wasser.
Jesus. That angelic voice gets right in under the heart armor and makes the molten tears flow involuntarily...
A truly wonderful voice. I hope music like this becomes mainstream one day.

I find such a dark hope and empty comfort from this. I really like it.
I listen and close eyelids. like an evening that is peace and never ends.

Her music is a spiritual experience. It's like she's channeling my own inner anguish and exorcising it in verse and melody.
Thank you, Chelsea!

A beautiful song for a fall day like today...
Even years after first discovering it, Chelsea's music still gives me goosebumps. She is truly an amazing and gifted artist.

She has the most breathtaking voice I've ever heard.
If anyone ever asks me "What do people mean when they say a song is haunting?" I will make them watch this.
You will probably also like Agnes Obel.
Also, her version of "You are my Sunshine" !
Same effect ❤❤
Was not expecting this voice. Pretty phenomenal song.
I feel her voice in my soul, her voice is so divine and haunting.
Jesus! So beautiful so haunting getting those Beth gibbons Mazzy star vibes!
I think it rocks this way, real earthy and gritty
eloquence in informal language on the internet is rare, but you just hit it. thank you
This reply...the most beautiful thing I've read in a long while.
