  • The Northstar Trillium and Firebird Solo Canoes are frequent choices for smaller to mid-sized paddlers. Today’s guest paddler is my 12 year old Paxton (85 lbs). Paxton has always enjoyed paddling but today’s video captured a breakthrough for him in boat and paddle control. It seems we have him hooked now!
The Firebird in this video is one that I’ve wanted to add to the fleet for awhile. Extreme durability in the IXP coupled with the beauty of the Emerald color and wood trim. I’ll be using this canoe a lot this season.
    Firebird IXP:
Approximately 40lbs with wood trim and added color. (Can get down to 25 lbs in StarLite)
    13’6”
    2.5” bow and stern rocker
    Trillium StarLite Alum trim
    14’6”
    25 lbs
2.5” bow rocker, 1.5” stern rocker

Great to see Paxton enjoying himself. Hope it inspires more young ones to take up canoeing. Well done.

I didn't realize how responsive these lightweight canoes are...great demonstration. I think I need one now.

My giddiness for solo Canoes was definitely at its height after seeing my child have such cool breakthroughs. To me, a kayak sometimes feels like a typewriter and a solo canoe, feels like a paintbrush on canvas!

How is the color being produced in the IXP layup? Is it a layer, or a pigment in the resin of some type? If a fabric, does it add weight (and/or any extra strength to the already robust IXP)?

It's a layer of polyester cloth and pigmented resin. On tandems, it adds 4-5lbs, 2-3lbs on solo. Looks great in pics and that's where/why these mostly sell. Strength/abrasion resistance is minimally influenced by this. For my vids, I love the way they look so I like to have one around but the added weight is noticeable. I think the wood ixp emerald green is just a cool look so I ordered one this way.

Nice work, beautiful canoe. Have you tried a kayak paddle?

I have used a kayak paddle in a solo canoe but prefer a canoe paddle for my solo canoeing. I am not a purist so whatever works for people and on a windy day with long miles I might be apt to use one. Sometimes I use a short canoe paddle in a kayak! It’s fun!

I didn’t get the weight of those canoes?

25 lbs for the trillium and ~40 for the IXP Firebird. I have the spec sheet here so you can see all options and weights:
