2020. From Wisconsin, this is exactly what I needed. So many videos were propagating half or just the top of a succulent. I was just moving one from the pot I purchased it in, it broke a leaf and I needed to know how to not make waste of it. It took me a week of hanging on to one leaf to find out just what to do. Love this! The ramblings are fun too! Also, I just propigated a few smaller shoots of my snake plant and kept it by the mother plant . I swear they grow way better when they're close to other plants!
With a couple of feet of snow on the ground, seeing the green outside your windows gives me hope, but not for quite awhile though!

Good tip about leaving the leaf on; some take it off once they see a bud with roots, but it makes sense to keep it on for it's nutrients!

Your succies are amazing. You are adorable and fun to watch. I lived in San Antonio for a brief time in the military originating from San Diego, California And the weather freaked me out and seemed extreme. I’ve been back in San Diego for a long time and just got into succulents because I bought a Graptopetalum Superbum by chance a few years ago that grew into a beast and had so much plant that I pursued propagation to use all the pieces when I replanted. Thank you for the videos :)

Superb plant collection & variety. The stacking clay pots idea is brilliant, never seen that before so will be emulating that soon. It's a cold, dark & wet February here in Cambridgshire UK but I have rebutia cuttings actually in flower due to a heated propagator plus echeveria leaf cuttings rooting away nicely. I will try & pop a vid up soon. Cheers !

Great creativity with the micro succulents. I like the mini dish garden a lot. I mainly grow gasterias but I am a plant geek so I have everything. I'll definitely do the little fairy garden.

Now I know what we were doing wrong and in the future I'm sure we can do it! I'm just a beginner but I love succulents and hope to own a nursery some day so thank you so much!!
Hi Sky! That's awesome! My dogs liked to sleep on my propagation trays too. :/ Maybe because they were in a great sunny spot by the window... what do you think you were doing wrong? And I think I want to have a small nursery or just a small botanical garden that sells good coffee, or maybe just a tequila shop with succulents too ;D So many possibilities!
Sucs For You! I think we messed up watering them, or we picked leaves that were already to far gone, because we never even saw roots. And I guess a nursery is a bit of an overstatement, I just wanted to simplify it lol. I really want to just own a little shop with succulents (and other plants) and different kinds of pots for them and other decorations as well. Where I live we have a small square that has a lot of small antique stores and I'd love to do that but with plants. A coffee shop is another good idea though! I love coffee lol.
Like id love to sell decorations that I can make on my own, like selling things that I can make using the DIY projects on TH-cam and stuff

I have found that if you let them dry out completely like a cactus, they love that too, even during propogation.

In the very beginning, I was either over watering them because I was watering them along with my flowers or would forget about them.When they dried-out that is when I noticed that they did well. Again, thank you..I like that live in the same area as I do. Keep those videos coming and if you have any flowers, share those too.

Hi! Love your channel...I am a newbie but totally addictied to my new succulent babies...I have some important urget t questions I'm hoping you or someone can answer...1. I pulled my leafs off correctly and instead of letting the callus before putting them on dry soul...I instantly put them in the soil...they r all basically I callused now but "Did I ruin them by putting them directly on the soil after popping them off their Mommy?"....2. my next question is...I had a baby growing off it's Mommy and I wanted to separate it and plant it in her own pot....I screwed up and somehow cut the roots off the big Mamma Plant...(the baby has it's roots and is doing fine ..) the mama plant still has a tiny amount of root and I just laid her right back on top of the soil where she was praying she will be ok.... "Is the Mama going to die with Such little roots supporting her?".. thanks for whoever takes the time to answer and give me so advice....

I’m going to take you up on your bet about doing it anywhere. I’m in southern Ontario and I haven’t had a single successful propagation yet. So so many leaves and none have matured. Tried both North and south facing windows to no avail, can’t to it outdoors unfortunately.

hi! so i'm not sure if you'll see this but about over a month ago i plucked the leaves from my succulent and misted them everyday and they are doing well!! but i have a question. so they have roots that are very long and have just had roots for almost 2 weeks and they just keep getting longer. no leaves. what should i do. should i cover the roots?
Yes ma'am just cover the roots with dirt and spray the dirt over the roots with water -try not to get the leaves wet

You can plant the roots sure! They may be 'duds' but sometimes it takes a long time to see leaves.

Thanks and I'm on it! I personally make my own from about 30-40% topsoil (cheap filler dirt) to 60-70% perlite with a bunch of pumice for good measure- if you watch a minute or two of this video, I talk about making it ;) (How to: Arrange a simple pot... th-cam.com/video/P3OwhkExhug/w-d-xo.html)
I use my own too here in florida we get tons of rain, excessive heat and humidity. I use 50% succulent and cacti soil, 40% perlite and 10% coco loco potting mix. She makes her own which is great too! I just have to do things a little different here because of the crazy climates all year long. Hope that helps!

Idk why but wiggling it never gives me a clean break, but pushing it downwards does. Maybe it just depends from person to person and plant to plant
Andrea, I read that once you get tiny roots on a leaf, you should reduce watering. The abscence of moisture will encourage the roots to seek out moisture and actually grow more as if they were using intelligence.
My own problem has always been over-watering - the leaf just starts to rot, so maybe this is correct theory....what do you think?
Yep! Best to not water at all until you see roots and very little once they come in so they keep producing.
I'm going to try this method with my yucca plant leaves. Looks good.
Just found your channel and am curious about your background as related to succulents. I love these plants and find that I am overwhelmed by the number of new plants I have generated. I simply cannot throw away a viable leaf! Well, it's not really a problem until my friends stop taking my little "offerings".
Seriously, are there a lot of succulents that cannot be propagated by leaf cuttings? I haven't had any success with the ruffled Echeverias and a number of other succulents I have not been able to identify yet. Continued success to you!
My background... I guess I just have farmer's blood :) I was raised with plants and animals as my companions (only-child lol). I have so many propagations ... and yes, it's impossible to throw anything away- any stem and leaf could grow a new plant and thinking of that happening in the trash/compost ... :/ I have a section in my garden bed for topped stems and sad plants I call the 'Maybe Grave' - I'll include that in an upcoming video of my backyard succulents.
Most of my friends have some of my plants as boarders now and I'm still a bit overwhelmed with so many, so I'm going to try to do some guerilla giveaways- just leave them in random places, and sell off the babies for like a quarter each...though the money will immediately be spent on more sucs :D
I had an E. Ruffles leaf propagation going for a while and I'm still sad to say I lost it to the heat last summer, that or me looking at it too much ;) It's supposed to be pretty difficult and I was stoked I'd been partially successful- no bigger than a dime but it had 6 leaves! :( So it is possible!!
I have an E. Compton leaf w/ a couple scraggly roots but I'm 99.9% sure nothing is going to come of it. The plant died 3+ ago and the leaf is all I have left ha! My thoughts are the paler the plant, the more it will struggle to propagate. Without a lot of green coloring to photosynthesize by, I think the leaf gives up before new growth can happen. So try your pastels, variegated, and paler colored propagations in the Spring and Fall, and try to use a LOT Of leaves so your odds increase... please keep me posted! What do you do if the succulent grows from propagation and it's too skinny and doesn't stand?
Hi! If the stems are too weak, it's probably from a lack of wind...are you growing indoors? Try to strengthen them with an electric fan or put them outside if possible.
Those leaves look very plump and smooth to have babies that are well-established like that. After the roots and the baby plant appears how often do you water the soil without the baby plant rotting?
Weekly or so - and yes, these are great leaf propagators! It's humid here so they didn't dry up.
@@SucsForYou I live in the humid Northeast Coast which is really not their natural environment but one could compensate. There is someone with a video that puts the leaf propagation in an egg carton and does absolutely nothing. Dry propagation. There must be a percentage of humidity in the air I assume for this to work.
Super excited to find your channel! I am in Seabrook and find that some things that work in other aka cooler areas of the states, do not work here. I fell in love with succulents about 10 months ago.. Prior to that, I didn't care much for plants....at all. Last summer my plants stayed alive...which to me was amazing. However when the fall came, they started to grow and look healthy. Do you find living in our climate that you have to watch them more in the summer than winter?

And yes, the eagerness they show for growth in the fall might be greater than spring- the only issue in winter is the occasional freak freeze and too much rain- otherwise, I'd say they love our tropical/bayou 'winters.' :)
Step 1. Gently break off a leaf
Step 2? How do I lay them down?
Step 3? Until I see roots
Step 4? Then what do I do?
Cover roots little and keep watching them until?
Through all this process, do I water them?
Then eventually final step. What do I do?

my succulents got rained out ,/ soaked ,I forgot to bring them in one night, do u think I should repot them ? I hate for them to rot since some of them beginning grow , & in plastic container?
Yes! Do it now!! Especially if they're in plastic...You can pull them out of the soil and leave them for a week before worrying about repotting :) Either dump the dirt and wait for it to dry, or go ahead with some new dirt and reuse the old once it's dry again.
Do you recommend me using terracotta pots for succulents? Or I can use any with drainage hole, painted? Thx so much

I have got four babies from one leave ). The mother leave came naturally off. When is the right time to separate the babies? Thank you for the video.
Neat!! You can leave them together until they develop stronger stems then separate :)
You ever faced the issue that when the mother leaf totally dries out, the little plant starts to dry it as well? I lost all my cuttings the same way. They grew the tiny cute plants, and now they are all dry.
I've seen it all 😅 Try keeping props out of direct light to avoid stressing them out too much to put out roots. If they don't have many or any roots, they'll really struggle.
@@SucsForYou they havr some small roots but then maybe indeed too much light. And maybe i'd need to spray water on them more often.
I have 3 succulents (Graptosedum Vera Higgins, Sedum Pachyphyllum Blue, & Sedum Nussbaumerianum Yellow) growing inside with LED lights, (red, blue, & red & blue). I use red& blue, 12 hrs on/off. All 3 plants are strectching. Is there a certain led color best for them? Is 12 on/off need to change? I only water when top soil dry. They are only indoors. I live in Montrose, Houston, TX. Thanks. Start leaving the lights on for an hour longer each day until you hit 16 hours on. I use white full spectrum and keep them on 14 hours a day.
@@SucsForYou These led's are only red,blue, & red&blue. In this same place I grow air plants. All these plants really being out my great grandmother's FrankOma pottery. So the white lite is the normal one in the ceiling or something different? Thanks for your reply. Randy C

Thanks for this video. I love all your videos. This might not be exactly on topic, but have you ever tried using ping pong balls to fill the bottoms of too deep pots ? I have such a hard time finding shallow pots . I'm considering putting ping pong balls in the bottom of a pot , covering them with screen , then putting my mix on top of the screen. Seems like the round shape of the balls would allow water through the drainage holes and not suffocate my babies . I hate using up so much of my mix . It makes the pots heavy too . AND they dry out so slowly that I worry about root rot . Seems like the ping pong balls would solve it . Hope you're having a great day . Big hugs 🤗
In theory I think your idea is great! I would only worry about the soil sinking/shifting over time but that's nothing that would affect the health of the plants ;)

At least I finally found my calcined clay really cheap . So I don’t feel like each pot costs a fortune to fill . Haha ! Using so much of my precious pumice felt like throwing diamonds into each planter 😂😂😂😂.

I love your channel, I just started getting some succulents they look great in my dorm room and I'm learning so much from you channel. One question, how long would they start growing new leaves after it starts putting out roots?
Hi Lulu- thanks!! That's a tricky question but about 4-6 weeks... And sometimes much longer or never... I'm not sure why some put out a ton of roots and never grow leaves. Some put out leaves before roots 😑 that's why we always say it's best to have as many leaves propagating it once as possible so you have more chances at success.
Hi there!! Do you ever use a grow light? I don’t have many places in my house that gets sufficient lighting. But I want to enjoy my plants too instead of hiding them under a light. I’m into propagating tho! Loving it!

I use a t5 sunblaze grow light and love it. I run it 14 to 16 hrs a day depending if it's for veggies or succulents.
Do Topsy Turvey Succulants have their babies grow from shoots that you cut off like you did with that one today? Or are those shoots just a bloom? Thanks
Most Echeveria types don't make the long stem babies but several can and do! I've had it happen with an E. diffractens and a Graptoveria Fred Ives so far :)

At 6:03 when you said "they're gonna hang on there for a little while longer", about how long did you mean? I have some that have sprouted small plants. It's been about 3 months since I first cut the leaf from the original plant.
I really try to let the leaf dry completely until it falls off naturally :)
My leaf cuttings have long roots but no baby flowers yet .. should i try to cover the roots a bit ? 🤔

Once the leaves have roots and are now on soil, do you water at all? Or do you let the parent leaf continue to provide everything until you see a baby? I have some with little roots that I just put on soil today. No water at all yet. The soil ( for cactus) was moist out of the bag but in my climate will dry out completely in a day or two. I have them in a bright, non direct sunny window.
Try not watering until the parent leaf starts withering. Then you can dampen the soil around the roots to help supplement :)

love your video's, your awesome... this is my first time propagating like 20 different succulents and just noticed like a week ago that some of the roots are above the dirt and they look Brownish...what dose it mean?? help
Thanks Michelle! Maybe the roots are drying out from being exposed to air? Just add a lil more dirt to help hold them in place if they're trying to run away :)

Whats the difference between an overwatered and sunburned succulent leaf?? I have a black propagation leaf that's wrinkly but it has a little flower and stem growing. What does that mean?? Sunburned or overwatered??
I'm guessing it's from water - sunburned looks more dry and scarred

Hello....I just discovered your TH-cam Channel...and I love your work with succulents.I started propagating some of my succulents....but. ....I have no luck with PERLE VON NUREMBERG.The leaves developed roots ....and the the little babies.Then the little babies turn black and die.....What can I DO????I HOPE YOU ANSWER ME.THANKS.....
Maybe they're getting too much sun? Are you watering them?
@@SucsForYou Yes...after the leaves spring the little babies....I DO water them with a spray bottle.....
@@luislomas28 Are you wetting the plants or just the soil? It sounds like they're either rotting from getting wet, overwatered, or possibly too much light or heat...

Thank you for the best insights ever! i have a few older succulents that look like they might be over growing their current pots - if i re-plant them in larger ones, will they continue to get bigger and bigger? And one more thing, I'm so nervous and careful around my current propagates because they seem so fragile. Will it harm them if I remove their baby roots from the top of the soil that they have started to establish their growth in? Thanks again for being such an incredible resource :)
Hi Hannah! Most plants have a max size but to max them out, they need to be in bigger pots or in the ground, so you're on the right track ;) And I'm not quite sure about question 2 - what do you mean by remove their roots from the top of soil? Do you mean relocate a leaf that's already rooted in place? That's fine- they're pretty tough and will grow more roots ;)

My leaf is pretty much dead but has a nice bigg baby growing from it, however no roots! It's in a tray. Is this something I would just bury a bit in a small pot and hope it grows roots?
Any suggestions on a go to soil mixture? What kind of pebbles do you prefer?
I got few leaves from the bottom of my succulent pot...i didn't pluck it...seems its naturally dropped off....is there any chance for propogating it....

A guy at my nursery told me to propigate to cut off the top! I did but then I saw your video. Did I kill it?
Topping is another method of propagation so it should be fine :)
