- If you've tried propagating in the past but didn't have much luck, I'm going to discuss the main reasons and solutions to problems I've encountered personally and heard about from others.
Whether you are seeing roots but no new leaves, leaves but no roots, or no growth at all, water, light, and growing seasons are the top factors in successful propagation. Once you have a clear idea of why those matter, you'll be able to troubleshoot the problems you may be running into.

My girlfriend put out a bowl in the garden with some succulents in it years ago and since then, they have spread like wildfire and migrated outside the bowl! I think it's amazing how great these plants are at surviving and reproducing. The plants somehow survive through our northeastern winters too! I really dont know how they do it...

What kind are they, if you don’t mind me asking? I would love to find some succulents that can survive outside in the northern part of the south. It gets down in the 20’s here (sometimes colder but not super often)
Probably Semperverium, Hen and chicks. They grow like wildfire in a 4 season climate.

I noticed that patience is the key to success. I left my leaves to dry on top of dry soil and only after a month they actually STARTED growing roots. It takes time. I'll see how it goes!

With propagating succulents, I think the keys are patience and neglect. I put the leaves in a plant pot saucer filled with perlite and just leave them alone. A few months later most of the leaves have grown baby plants with roots. Eventually the leaves that have become new plants shrivel up and the baby drops off by itself.
There is no need for misting or watering because they get all they need from the leaf and a little from the environment. In fact, I have a feeling that misting or watering could prevent the leaves from shriveling up so you won't know when the baby is ready to be planted for certain.

If the soil in the mother plant is pretty dry when you get your leaves off to propagate you can just set them into the pot with the mother plant and water them a few days later after the leaf dries at the end. I did this and have seen a lot of leaves that I’ve taken off to propagate and leaves that have just simply fallen off, produce a lot of baby succulent with great root systems!

I am so awesome at doing my research on proper care, and so terrible at following pro advice. What's wrong with me?!? I have killed so many poor little green friends, 1 Leaf at a time (hope they don't feel pain, cause i can really Draw out a succ-u-cide). But I'm so happy to find a knowledgeable person from Houston, where i live, so the advice is more specific to my growing conditions. Thanks for the great video!

I think it's okay until it starts to get colder :) Then growth may slow down but it will go faster in spring!

This past Mother’s Day I asked a worker at Rule King what they would do with the 6 large succulent leaves on the floor under a succulent display. He says”Sweep them up”. I asked said,” Then what?” He says, “ throw them in the trash!” 😬. I asked if I could crawl and get them. He looked like this😳 Said Sure, knock yourself out!”

I’ve been propagating a common ectavaria and the leaf grew tiny roots back in March 2023. As of today, June 2023, they have pups the size of a lady bug.. they’re so slow growing! Everyone else has dime sized pups within 2 weeks!

I am just starting out. I have a couple of dry dirt plastic takeaway food trays which I have a few things currently actually starting to take root. I am building my collection, but sadly, my balcony is in a scorching exposure and I need to come up with some funky solutions to help stop my echevarias burning to a crisp, and that doesn't offend my neighbours. Thanks for your videos. They are so helpful.
Been there! Laying awake trying to think of affordable/inoffensive rain/sun protection set-ups ... Really though, something as simple as a chair to block direct sunlight from a plants can work great! I'm not sure of your set-up, but maybe you can add some hooks and hang simple white curtain panels... or two large pots of herbs or something with 6-8' T-stakes and some garden shade cloth stretched between. Just tossing some ideas out to job inspiration
It is a rental apartment where there are some super strict rules about what I can and can't have. This includes window boxes. I cannot have them. My local hardware shop has some lovely freestanding vertical gardens which I am probably going to get and set them him a U shape. Thanks for making contact. Now I just need to save up for an hour of your time.

alonyaJ is it ok to use plastic containers for a pot when propagating?
It works, especially if you think about the plastic pots plants come in.
I just make sure I keep it in a bright shaded spot that is well ventilated but not drafty. I used an old centre hole punch to put a drain holes in the base. It is filled with an inch of dry cactus & succulent soil right from the bag. I spritz it every other day, using a small fine spray mist bottle. After 4 weeks I have cute babies on three varieties of echevaria leaves, roots on the copper spoon leaves and a couple of spider roots on the cassula gollum leaves although they are taking much longer. I am about to move the bigger rooted leaves into a 17" terracotta saucer because the 2 little containers I have are not really large enough. The plastic containers worked when I was just starting, and they are small and light enough for me to lift and move while I am recovering from a fractured shoulder blade. I hope this helps.

😱 I have this one firecracker leaf in a glass ramekin that I've been misting ever since she calloused over: I'm going to stop doing that now and put her on dry soil with this other leaf from a lipstick Echeveria.

The next time you get one, you might want to propagate a few extras as backup. String of Dolphins grows roots insanely fast when you put a stem in a glass of water, with several nodes (where leaves had been) under the water.

@@VictoriaHVictoriesOfCreativity I just bought both of those as well as my string of dolphins from Etsy. You can search and buy them all individually as plants, or find someone who is selling a bunch of Senecios as a group of cuttings. On my last order of 20 random cuttings for $20 from Artesian Alley on Etsy (say that 3 times quickly!) who is awesome about honoring special requests, I asked to have Senecios cuttings included I got lots of them including string of pearls, dolphins, bananas, and ruby necklace. They may not have string of watermelons, but you could ask. That was far cheaper than buying individual plants, and they always include a lot of extra cuttings. Good luck!

learnt the hard way to not to put them in direct sunlight, they became really crispy within a day
So I accidentally propagated three little babies off of a dying succulent, and I left them to do their own thing, I had no soil for them and minimally watered them, seems like I was doing something right 😄, oddly enough, they began propagating near the end of August and have continued to grow and get big!

Recently got a tiny little ghost plant from Wal-Mart and it's been dropping leaves like crazy! Some of them get all squishy and weird looking before they fall off, some don't. I'm hoping I haven't already killed it! Lol
Repotted it in a different soil mixture and haven't watered it since I brought it home. The amount of leaves dropping is slowly decreasing. It was dropping 3-4/day, but yesterday there was only one and today there's only been one so far. I think Wal-Mart just sucks at caring for plants. Lol Also having watched your video, I'm pretty sure it had quite a bit of Frost damage. I thought the leaves were supposed to look all clear and squishy... 😆 Brought it to my father in law and as soon as he looked at it he said "that's definitely over-watered!" Hopefully I can make it feel better after what they did to the poor thing...
Lol just kidding. It's basically dead now. There's only like 2 little tiny leaves left... 🤦

I took good care of them, they were so beautiful and Healthy..
But one day, to my surprise.. all the Babies just disappeared..
Now i have one baby left.. Hope he becomes a healthy adult..🤞
I've been misting clay platters full of leaves for a while now... You're right they do tend to rot. The ones that have a very high success rate for me seem to be my jelly bean sedum, when putting them aside to callus some grew roots. I don't know why I didn't put 2 &2 together and stop babying them so much sooner ;-;

I think more arid climates can get away with this 'misting' that people are instructed to do - it's a common instruction that just doesn't work for everyone/everywhere ;) And thank you- I'm happy to help!
@@SucsForYou On cooler days I tend not to mist, but it's summer here with a peak of 38c (100f) today.. They're not in direct sunlight but I might give them a spritz anyway. At the roots of course!!

So once my babies get big enough, and the big leaf they sprouted from dies, how often should I water? I live in south Florida so it’s hot and humid. I have then on my lanai in bright indirect light. I usually just give the “teens” a few drops of water once a week or so.
We had to evacuate for hurricane Irma last year, and I had to leave all my succulents inside the boarded up house with no light for three weeks. So when we finally returned home the had all died BUT I was able to propagate a ton of leaves, so I have a whole bunch of babies now. They are my Irma babies lol! I learned everything I needed to know to do that from you! ❤️❤️

Thanks for this video. So how do you know when to pluck the leaves? How do i know if a root is to rotted to survive? I have once suc with a root thats super soft and squishy and one thats pretty thin and very hard.

Ok I’m confused about the dirt tray part. I’ve heard both ways. One dampen dirt or spray (spritz) dirt then place leaves. Two place leaves on dirt then dampen dirt. Which is the correct way?

I am in the process of propagating a pulido's echeveria. I pulled the leaves from the stem in April and they quickly formed roots and pups. The pups are now up to an inch wide and some an inch high. The mother leaf on most of these are still in perfect condition and show no signs of dying anytime soon. I recently experimented and twisted the leaf off the pup and all the roots stayed attached to the leaf. :( I have been watering these leaves and pups once in awhile. I just really want to get them into pots so that I can give them away.
Sometimes the mother leaf becomes part of the new plant! It's a good thing :)

Very helpful! I can propagate fat echeveria leaves, but have had no luck with varieties with thin leaves. I have a new batch going and hoping for better results this time around, since I am starting in spring rather than the hottest part of the summer. Thanks for the tips!

furthest I've gotten were roots and one with a few baby leaves but then they just shrivel and die. I think I am going to just not water them at all until they've grown and the mother leaf dies at an appropriate time. Maybe even have a trial run with different containers. Thank you for the tips!

Hey! This is a great video, way more comprehensive than most I've seen! You really understand the biology of these plants.
I have a larger succulent leaf, like the size of my index and middle finger. It has a root system going, and the leaf appears to be healthy, but no growth. I think I may have planted this too soon and been watering it too often? I spritz once every morning and this particular one is "planted" in regular soil.
Thanks Alyssa! I would cut back on watering the leaf but there is a chance it's only going to produce roots ... I had one do nothing but grow magnificent roots for over 6 months. I think it only died because I kept moving it around :/

Great video! I was told in some vids that they should be watered often, but I wonder if that varies based on location and humidity? Where I live, it gets hot, dry, and water evaporates extremely fast, and I do mist my plants almost daily. Usually aim for the roots and the gritty surface very lightly in the morning, and by afternoon, the water has already evaporated. I used to not water as often, but I have noticed that my succulents grow roots faster and look a lot more healthy and plump with more watering.

Argh. Im getting great babies but they aren't growing roots and some people say to keep the soil damp, some say don't water it until the roots actually show. I live in a humid place but they're in my room and have light from my window (or a special light i gave them), and i had airconditioning on. I'm not sure if any of these are helping or not helping them. aaaaaa.
I would keep them dry since you live in a humid climate and you have them indoors. They'll put out roots when they get thirsty unless there's some physical/cellular damage to the leaf tip preventing them from growing. You could try putting them outside out of direct sun to see if the natural light and warmth will help speed things up :)
I live in southern Louisiana and I'm a beginner suc gardener. My sub say put them in full sun/part shade. So I put them in full sun and it looked as if it were getting a sun burn so I moved it to where it only gets maybe an hour of sun if that. I'm so confused. Thanks if you get a chance to answer.

Im from the philippines & its like summer here all year round. Is it ok to water my succulents everyday? My succulents are mostly eceveria.
You need to let the soil dry for a day or longer between waterings. 1x a week, 2x at the most!
How to water during leaf propagation every day or when the sand dries?
Sorry for the late reply! Texas has been dealing with a brutal winter storm. It depends on the climate, but yes, wait for the soil to dry and keep them out of direct sun 🙏

It's hard to say without knowing what the set up is, how much light they get and how often you water. It sounds like possibly too much sun...
Sucs For You! Thank you so much for answering me. I put them in dry soil, they reiceived sun, but not directly. and i don't watered them so often, like once a week, but I live in central america is pretty sunny and hot in here. So maybe they need water? Thank so you much again.
For sure! You may need to moisten the soil to help keep them juicy if it's really hot, but be careful it doesn't rot the plants :/ Try to put them somewhere they get some wind or closer to your home where it may be a bit cooler if you can. I have an electric oscillating fan on my porch when it gets really hot here...sometimes 2!

Hello my friend. :-) I just started propagation and have been successful with about 30 new plants growing! It should be noted, though, that I live in Michigan and it is turning into Autumn. So this may not be the best time to propagate them as it will soon be too cold to leave them outside. My question is how much sunlight should the baby flowers have? I know if they don't receive the adequate amount, they will not maintain the rosette shape. I want my new propagated plants to look pretty! Do you have any advice in this department? Also, I am not sure when to plant them. They first grow roots and then the roots turn into buds, but when the leaves starts to shriveled and they don't really have Roots yet, I'm not really sure what to do with them...

Please can someone help me. I've tried propagating so many times and it works well until I have the replant them after the main leaf dies. After that they just go downhill and die. Any tips?
My burro’s tail leaves have little baby plants but they get soft at the stem and fall over. Any idea why??

I recently started my succulent garden, here in Dallas on my apartment porch/balcony. I have watched so many of your videos, but I didn't see a pink butterfly kalanchoe.How do you feel about these. I ask because the main reason for ordering seeds was to make a 'million' other plants. Is this a dead end plant unless you use stem cuttings?
The pink 'butterflies' that offset are usually pretty hard to get established unless they have some green in them. I have been somewhat successful once but eventually it died. Yes, you can keep them going by cuttings though!
New to your site and love your informational videos! My main question is HOW TO IDENTIFY the succulents I own?? When purchasing my plants, the names are never listed, so am I lost on exactly how to care for, and most importantly how to propagate the plants I do have. Hi! I live in the Philippines. I bought bare root succulents from a much colder place (like 20 degrees) to my place (about 30 degrees). I potted them after airdrying for 30 hours. For a week, the foliage kept falling or became soggy (kind of edema), though I never watered it. Now, most of my succulents are almost bald. I'm a newbie, so I'm befuddled. Is it normal for them to lose their leaves due to different temperature?
It sounds like they're in a bit of shock maybe? Watch out for direct sun in the heat and humidity 😥😥

Nope! But you do need to keep them juicy so no direct light and it helps to live in a humid climate :)
I have my leaves on a small dinner plate outside where it gets shady and sometimes sunny so I’m worried now. Ahhh lol I’m a newbie so if I fail I’ll get back up again.

I live about an hour west of ft worth and it is extremely dry out here all year round. I was wondering if there was a succulent that I can plant outside that can handle freezing temps in the winter but also extremely dry hot weather in the summer. I'd like to plant them directly in the ground.
Certain species of Agave, Opuntia, Sempervivums would probably work
hi, i tried to propagate jade leafs, but they wrinkled and turned black. i live in a tropical country, and i placed my tray in a north facing window. what could be the problem?
Were they wet at all? If not, then it sounds like the leaves were removed 'incorrectly' - jade leaves are a bit trickier than others ;)
