I was thinking the same thing. Appreciate the tips. Need to tend to my plants very soon, and will be trying some top dressing finally as well. Thank you!
@@Succulentsandsunshine I have been trying to figure out how to fix my succulents for months and I am also terrified of cutting them but I'm so excited to try it and to put my plants in a more well-lit window!
The one thing you didn't touch on that I'd highly recommend is a soil change before replanting everything back into the pot. Especially since you said this arrangement was a few years old, more than likely the plants have used up most of the available nutrients at the surface, and anything down under has a high likelihood of mildew and bacteria growth. That lower level soil does not get much oxygen through root development or sunlight, and since most folks tend to overwater succulents, its definitely going to be true in most of these decorative ceramics that don't have drainage either. Just something to consider for newer gardeners :)
Just cruising thru and found your video, I learned a lot, no blah, blah, blah, nice background music. Clear and to the point. I appreciate your video, knowledge and editing skills. New sub now. Thank you, Angel, from The Bay
I'm a green thumb but new to succulents. I about had a heart attack when you whacked those plants off. I thought they looked amazing to begin with, but the arrangement really did look more beautiful at the end! Thanks for the useful info! New Sub!
I thought my apartment got SO much sunlight, and was shocked when my new succulents started stretching less than a week after bringing them home. Moving them to a sunnier window, now I just need to get the gritty mix "soil" and some tools so I can implement your tips and techniques. It looks fun, but you're right: it is intimidating for a newbie!
They can be grown indoors 😊 You'll just find that almost always you'll need a grow light to prevent stretching. You can see my indoor setup here: th-cam.com/video/Z6gQFSf8ax8/w-d-xo.html
My love of succulents started just a few months ago when I went crazy buying and now have a plant stand with grow lights to handle all the arrangements! lol One of the first ones I bought was a watch chain. When I got it home and was replanting it, I noticed it was tied up with a rubber band. I removed the band and the whole thing fell apart! Well, that was a surprise. I planted it with a variety of other plants in a pot that looks like a head and the watch chain just gives it that crazy hair day feel...I love it.
What a coincidence to find your channel this evening!! I’m visiting my daughter and saw that her aloe vera plant was huge and leggy and in a VERY tiny pot. I went out and bought a bigger pot and proper potting soil for succulents but had no idea what to do about the leggyness. Now I know and I can even take a clipping for myself!! I can’t wait for tomorrow!! Thanks for such easy to follow instructions! I’m subscribing for sure!
Yes, the pot is lovely. Does it have a drain hole on the bottom? If one does use a pot with no drain holes, would it work to tip it sideways and let any excess water exit that way?
The planters from Susan Aach do have drainage holes. Learn how to properly water a succulent planted in a pot without drainage here: succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-nondraining

Awesome video! Keep em coming!! As someone who lives up in Saskatchewan Canada, Stretched succulents are just an unavoidable fact of succulent keeping after a long winter in the only south facing window you have. At least there's loads of material for making cuttings in the spring to give to friends for Christmas!
I wonder if they did ever get a grow light for their succulents at winter. 4 years ago... amazing to think that was 4 cycles of renewal for the plants.
Thank you SO much for this!! I'm new at caring for succulents and have had this issue with several of my small ones, but you gave me the confidence to attempt these techniques and make the arrangements beautiful.
Thanks for this. I have figured these methods out for myself over the last few years, but it’s good to have your validation. If you follow a few simple rules, it’s pretty easy!
Absolutely one of THE best channels on Y/T! Congratulations. I’ve learned so much from these and I live in AZ!! For everyone that thinks ‘Succulents’ are easy to grow, I’ve learned watching this channel, it WAS me screwing up their basic requirements. 🤦🏼♂️ Challenge accepted! And now with this channel and your excellently edited speaking, videography and communication skills, I might actually have a chance here...!
This video was super helpful for the random reason that I learned the names of my (stretched out) succulents! It's been hard to find the names because my succulents look, well, not healthy, so finding their names is hard because all the pictures in images have been of healthy plants. Thanks! Also I would love to see what it looks like a bit later.
Great video, thank you so much! Now I know the term is "stretched out" not leggy for the aloe vera plant I am trying to salvage for a friend. And I know the reason for it, which makes complete sense given the place it was in.
That was really helpful, thank you! Now I don’t feel so nervous about cutting off the rosette on my succulent 😊 it’s gone very tall! I already got a few babies from a couple of leaves that fell off too, Kate
So glad it gave you confidence! It's always scary the first time, but then when you see it's not going to harm your plant, it's much easier to do the next time.
That rocked! I'm so much less intimidated now and think I can fix my crazy looking stretch out succulents AND I'm going to go find your propagation vidoes next! Thanks.

This is great! thank you. I am new to these plants. I do wish at the end you would show the planter 6 months down the road so we could see the progress. Also, you didn't say when you would start watering it or how often.
Wow, I would never have thought the final result would look that good! You've given me useful tips for how to clean up my succulent arrangement. Now where are my scissors?...
Very helpful and comes at a really good time for me. End of winter and it's time to clean up my pots . Thank you for such a clear explanation of how to do this

Just what I need to know about my leggy little friends! I need to be brave and just cut! So what I am wondering about is- how long should you wait after planting the little cuttings before watering?
You can do it! It's scary at first, but it will be so much better! Wait for a day or two after cutting to replant and water - you want the end to callous over first.
Girl I didn't know much about succulents when I watched this video so I was like oh cool I wanna know how to take care of my succulents :) and then you straight up MASSACRED THEM HAHAHA ngl I wasn't expecting that

Great video. Just a reminder for those of us in the southern hemisphere, you want a north or NE facing window, not south.
My succulents love my north facing window!
I live in the Northern hem and have a North or West window to choose from...though call. maybe that's why my plants are sometimes unhappy.
